Non-local gravity in D-dimensions: Propagator, entropy and bouncing Cosmology

We present the graviton propagator for an infinite derivative, $D$-dimensional, non-local action, up to quadratic order in curvature around a Minkowski background, and discuss the conditions required for this class of gravity theory to be ghost-free. We then study the gravitational entropy for de-Sitter and Anti-de Sitter backgrounds, before comparing with a recently derived result for a Schwarzschild blackhole, generalised to arbitrary $D$-dimensions, whereby the entropy is given simply by the area law. A novel approach of decomposing the entropy into its $(r, t)$ and spherical components is adopted in order to illustrate the differences more clearly. We conclude with a discussion of de-Sitter entropy in the framework of a non-singular bouncing cosmology.

Projecting the graviton to probe higher or lower dimensions

In this paper, we will discuss how in Einstein's theory a graviton can be enforced to probe fewer space-time dimensions in the deep ultraviolet (UV) as compared to far infrared (IR), and vice-versa. In particular, from a $D$ dimensional gravitational action in the IR we can project the $D$ dimensional graviton to probe only $2\leq N\leq D-1$ dimensions in the deep UV. Such projections of a graviton propagator can be thought of as an alternative to compactification. We will briefly explain the physical interpretation and consequences of such a dimensional transmutation.

Connection between dark matter abundance and primordial tensor perturbations

Primordial inflation and Dark Matter (DM) could both belong to the hidden sector. It is therefore plausible that the inflaton, which drives inflation, could couple to the DM either directly or indirectly, thus providing a common origin for both luminous and non-luminous matter. We explore this interesting possibility and show that, in certain scenarios, the DM mass can be correlated with the tensor-to-scalar ratio. This correlation might provide us with a window of opportunity for unravelling the properties of DM beyond the standard freeze-out paradigm.

Non-perturbative over-production of axion-like-particles (ALPs) via derivative interaction

Axion like particles (ALPs) are quite generic in many scenarios for physics beyond the Standard Model, they are pseudoscalar Nambu-Goldstone bosons, and appear once any global $U(1)$ symmetry is broken spontaneously. The ALPs can gain mass from various non-perturbative quantum effects, such as anomalies or instantons. ALPs can couple to the matter sector incluidng a scalar condensate such as inflaton or moduli field via derivative interactions, which are suppressed by the axion {\it decay constant}, $f_χ$ . Although weakly interacting, the ALPs can be produced abundantly from the coherent oscillations of a homogeneous condensate. In this paper we will study such a scenario where the ALPs can be produced abundantly, and in some cases can even overclose the Universe via odd and even dimensional operators, as long as $f_χ/Φ_{\rm I} \ll 1$, where $Φ_{\rm I}$ denotes the initial amplitude of the coherent oscillations of the scalar condensate, $ϕ$. We will briefly mention how such dangerous overproduction would affect dark matter and dark radiation abundances in the Universe.

The quest for cradles of life: using the fundamental metallicity relation to hunt for the most habitable type of galaxy

The field of astrobiology has made huge strides in understanding the habitable zones around stars (Stellar Habitable Zones) where life can begin, sustain its existence and evolve into complex forms. A few studies have extended this idea by modelling galactic-scale habitable zones (Galactic Habitable Zones) for our Milky Way and specific elliptical galaxies. However, estimating the habitability for galaxies spanning a wide range of physical properties has so far remained an outstanding issue. Here, we present a "cosmobiological" framework that allows us to sift through the entire galaxy population in the local Universe and answer the question "Which type of galaxy is most likely to host complex life in the cosmos"? Interestingly, the three key astrophysical criteria governing habitability (total mass in stars, total metal mass and ongoing star formation rate) are found to be intricately linked through the "fundamental metallicity relation" as shown by SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) observations of more than a hundred thousand galaxies in the local Universe. Using this relation we show that metal-rich, shapeless giant elliptical galaxies at least twice as massive as the Milky Way (with a tenth of its star formation rate) can potentially host ten thousand times as many habitable (earth-like) planets, making them the most probable "cradles of life" in the Universe.

Classical and Quantum Initial Conditions for Higgs Inflation

We investigate whether Higgs inflation can occur in the Standard Model starting from natural initial conditions or not. The Higgs has a non-minimal coupling to the Ricci scalar. We confine our attention to the regime where quantum Einstein gravity effects are small in order to have results that are independent of the ultraviolet completion of gravity. At the classical level we find no tuning is required to have a successful Higgs inflation, provided the initial homogeneity condition is satisfied. On the other hand, at the quantum level we obtain that the renormalization for large non-minimal coupling requires an additional degree of freedom that transforms Higgs inflation into Starobinsky $R^2$ inflation, unless a tuning of the initial values of the running parameters is made.

Wald's gravitational entropy for ghost-free, infinite derivative theories of Gravity

In this paper, we demonstrate that the Wald's entropy for any spherically symmetric blackhole within an infinite derivative theory of gravity is determined solely by the area law. Thus, the infrared behaviour of gravity is captured by the Einstein-Hilbert term, provided that the massless graviton remains the only propagating degree of freedom in the spacetime.

Generalised Quadratic Curvature, Non-Local Infrared Modifications of Gravity and Newtonian Potentials

Metric theories of gravity are studied, beginning with a general action that is quadratic in curvature and allows infinite inverse powers of the d'Alembertian operator, resulting in infrared non-local extensions of general relativity. The field equations are derived in full generality and their consistency is checked by verifying the Bianchi identities. The weak-field limit is computed and a straightforward algorithm is presented to infer the post-Newtonian corrections directly from the action. We then apply this to various infrared gravity models including non-local $Rf(R/ \Box)$ cosmology and non-local dark energy and massive gravity models. Generically the Newtonian potentials are not identical and deviate from the $1/r$ behaviour at large distances. However, the former does not occur in a specific class of theories that does not introduce additional degrees of freedom in flat spacetime. A new nonlocal model within this class is proposed, defined by the exponential of the inverse d'Alembertian. This model exhibits novel features, such as weakening of the gravity in the infrared, suggesting de-gravitation of the cosmological constant.

Dynamical breaking of shift-symmetry in supergravity-based inflation

Shift-symmetry is essential to protect the flatness of the potential, even beyond the super-Planckian vacuum expectation value (VEV) for an inflaton field. The breaking of the shift-symmetry can yield potentials suitable for super-Planckian excursion of the inflaton. The aim of this paper is to illustrate that it is indeed possible to break the shift-symmetry dynamically within 4 dimensional supergravity prior to a long phase of inflation. Thanks to the shift-symmetry, the leading contribu- tion to the inflaton potential is free from the dangerous exponential factor even after its breaking, which is the main obstacle to realizing the super-Planckian inflation in supergravity. But, in our simple model, the resulting inflaton potential is a cosine type potential rather than the power-law one and it is difficult to realize a super-Planckian breaking scale unfortunately.

Bound on largest $r\lesssim 0.1$ from sub-Planckian excursions of inflaton

In this paper we will discuss the range of large tensor to scalar ratio, $r$, obtainable from a sub-Planckian excursion of a {\it single}, {\it slow roll} driven inflaton field. In order to obtain a large $r$ for such a scenario one has to depart from a monotonic evolution of the slow roll parameters in such a way that one still satisfies all the current constraints of \texttt{Planck}, such as the scalar amplitude, the tilt in the scalar power spectrum, running and running of the tilt close to the pivot scale. Since the slow roll parameters evolve non-monotonically, we will also consider the evolution of the power spectrum on the smallest scales, i.e. at ${\cal P}_{s}(k\sim 10^{16}~{\rm Mpc^{-1}})\lesssim 10^{-2}$, to make sure that the amplitude does not become too large. All these constraints tend to keep the tensor to scalar ratio, $r\lesssim 0.1$. We scan three different kinds of potential for supersymmetric flat directions and obtain the benchmark points which satisfy all the constraints. We also show that it is possible to go beyond $r\gtrsim 0.1$ provided we relax the upper bound on the power spectrum on the smallest scales.

Geodesic completeness and homogeneity condition for cosmic inflation

There are two disjointed problems in cosmology within General Relativity (GR), which can be addressed simultaneously by studying the nature of geodesics around $t\rightarrow 0$, where $t$ is the physical time. One is related to the past geodesic completeness of the inflationary trajectory due to the presence of a cosmological singularity, and the other one is related to the homogeneity condition required to inflate a local space-time patch of the universe. We will show that both the problems have a common origin, arising from how the causal structure of null and timelike geodesics are structured within GR. In particular, we will show how a non-local extension of GR can address both problems, while satisfying the null energy condition for the matter sources.

Quantifying the reheating temperature of the universe

The aim of this paper is to determine an exact definition of the reheat temperature for a generic perturbative decay of the inflaton. In order to estimate the reheat temperature, there are two important conditions one needs to satisfy: (a) the decay products of the inflaton must dominate the energy density of the universe, i.e. the universe becomes completely radiation dominated, and (b) the decay products of the inflaton have attained local thermodynamical equilibrium. For some choices of parameters, the latter is a more stringent condition, such that the decay products may thermalise much after the beginning of radiation-domination. Consequently, we have obtained that the reheat temperature can be much lower than the standard-lore estimation. In this paper we describe under what conditions our universe could have efficient or inefficient thermalisation, and quantify the reheat temperature for both the scenarios. This result has an immediate impact on many applications which rely on the thermal history of the universe, in particular gravitino abundance.

Generalized ghost-free quadratic curvature gravity

In this paper we study the most general covariant action of gravity up to terms that are quadratic in curvature. In particular this includes non-local, infinite derivative theories of gravity which are ghost-free and exhibit asymptotic freedom in the ultraviolet. We provide a detailed algorithm for deriving the equations of motion for such actions containing an arbitrary number of the covariant D'Alembertian operators, and this is our main result. We also perform a number of tests on the field equations we derive, including checking the Bianchi identities and the weak-field limit. Lastly, we consider the special subclass of ghost and asymptotically free theories of gravity by way of an example.

Constraining Non-thermal and Thermal properties of Dark Matter

We describe the evolution of Dark Matter (DM) abundance from the very onset of its creation from inflaton decay under the assumption of an instantaneous reheating. Based on the initial conditions such as the inflaton mass and its decay branching ratio to DM, reheating temperature, and the DM mass and interaction rate with the thermal bath, the DM particles can either thermalize (fully/partially) with the primordial bath or remain non-thermal throughout their evolution history. In the thermal case, the final abundance is set by the standard freeze-out mechanism for large annihilation rates, irrespective of the initial conditions. For smaller annihilation rates, it can be set by the freeze-in mechanism, also independent of the initial abundance, provided it is small to begin with. For even smaller interaction rates, the DM decouples while being non-thermal, and the relic abundance will be essentially set by the initial conditions. We put model-independent constraints on the DM mass and annihilation rate from over-abundance by exactly solving the relevant Boltzmann equations, and identify the thermal freeze-out, freeze-in and non-thermal regions of the allowed parameter space. We highlight a generic fact that inflaton decay to DM inevitably leads to an overclosure of the Universe for a large range of DM parameter space, and thus poses a stringent constraint that must be taken into account while constructing models of DM. For the thermal DM region, we also show the complementary constraints from indirect DM search experiments, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, Cosmic Microwave Background, Planck measurements, and theoretical limits due to the unitarity of S-matrix. For the non-thermal DM scenario, we show the allowed parameter space in terms of the inflaton and DM masses for a given reheating temperature, and compute the comoving free-streaming length to identify the hot, warm and cold DM regimes.

Atick-Witten Hagedorn Conjecture, near scale-invariant matter and blue-tilted gravity power spectrum

We will provide an interesting new mechanism to generate almost scale invariant seed density perturbations with a red spectrum, while keeping the gravitational wave spectrum blue-tilted in a stringy thermal contracting phase at temperatures beyond the Hagedorn temperature. This phase is often referred to as the Hagedorn phase where the free energy has been conjectured by Atick and Witten to grow more slowly than ordinary radiation. The primordial fluctuations are created by the statistical thermal fluctuations determined by the partition function, rather than quantum vacuum driven fluid dynamical fluctuations. In order for our mechanism to work we require a non-singular bouncing cosmology.

Super-Planckian excursions of the inflaton and quantum corrections

Models of inflation with super-Planckian excursion seem well in agreement with the recent observations of B- mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation by the BICEP2 data. In this note, we highlight the challenges faced by such models from ultraviolet (UV) completion. In particular, we will discus radiative corrections to the inflaton Lagrangian and to the gravitational sector. We will emphasize why we would require an UV complete theory of gravity to tackle some of the issues for the super-Planckian excursion. In particular, we will highlight how higher derivative terms in the inflaton and gravity sectors cause problems from non-locality and ghosts, if considered order by order, and thus prompt us to take into account infinite series of such terms. We will also stress how the presence of a scale of new physics below the Planck scale would make some of the UV related problems more compelling and invalidate some of the remedies that have been proposed in the literature. Finally, we will briefly speculate on possible ways of curing some of the challenges.

Primordial blackholes and gravitational waves for an inflection-point model of inflation

In this article we provide a new closed relationship between cosmic abundance of primordial gravitational waves and primordial blackholes originated from initial inflationary perturbations for inflection-point models of inflation where inflation occurs below the Planck scale. The current Planck constraint on tensor-to-scalar ratio, running of the spectral tilt, and from the abundance of dark matter content in the universe, we can deduce a strict bound on the current abundance of primordial blackholes to be within a range, $9.99712\times 10^{-3}<Ω_{PBH}h^{2}<9.99736\times 10^{-3}$.
