Nonmonotonic crossover and scaling behaviors in a disordered 1D quasicrystal

We consider a noninteracting disordered 1D quasicrystal in the weak disorder regime. We show that the critical states of the pure model approach strong localization in strikingly different ways, depending on their renormalization properties. A finite size scaling analysis of the inverse participation ratios of states (IPR) of the quasicrystal shows that they are described by several kinds of scaling functions. While most states show a progressively increasing IPR as a function of the scaling variable, other states exhibit a nonmonotonic `re-entrant' behavior wherein the IPR first decreases, and passes through a minimum, before increasing. This surprising behavior is explained in the framework of perturbation renormalization group treatment, where wavefunctions can be computed analytically as a function of the hopping amplitude ratio and the disorder, however it is not specific to this model. Our results should help to clarify results of recent studies of localization due to random and quasiperiodic potentials.

Critical eigenstates and their properties in one and two dimensional quasicrystals

We present exact solutions for some eigenstates of hopping models on one and two dimensional quasiperiodic tilings and show that they are "critical" states, by explicitly computing their multifractal spectra. These eigenstates are shown to be generically present in 1D quasiperiodic chains, of which the Fibonacci chain is a special case. We then describe properties of the ground states for a class of tight-binding Hamiltonians on the 2D Penrose and Ammann-Beenker tilings. Exact and numerical solutions are seen to be in good agreement.

Gap structure of 1D cut and project Hamiltonians

We study the gap properties of nearest neighbors tight binding models on quasiperiodic chains. We argue that two kind of gaps should be distinguished: stable and transient. We show that stable gaps have a well defined quasiperiodic limit. We also show that there is a direct relation between the gap size and the gap label.

Quantum simulation of a 2D quasicrystal with cold atoms

We describe a way to obtain a two-dimensional quasiperiodic tiling with eight-fold symmetry using cold atoms. A series of such optical tilings, related by scale transformations, is obtained for a series of specific values of the chemical potential of the atoms. A theoretical model for the optical system is described and compared with that of the well-known cut-and-project method for the Ammann-Beenker tiling. This type of cold atom structure should allow the simulation of several important lattice models for interacting quantum particles and spins in quasicrystals.

Fractal dimensions of the wavefunctions and local spectral measures on the Fibonacci chain

We present a theoretical framework for understanding the wavefunctions and spectrum of an extensively studied paradigm for quasiperiodic systems, namely the Fibonacci chain. Our analytical results, which are obtained in the limit of strong modulation of the hopping amplitudes, are in good agreement with published numerical data. In the perturbative limit, we show a new symmetry of wavefunctions under permutation of site and energy indices. We compute the wavefunction renormalization factors and from them deduce analytical expressions for the fractal exponents corresponding to individual wavefunctions, as well as their global averages. The multifractality of wavefunctions is seen to appear at next-to-leading order in the ratio of the hopping amplitudes, $ρ$. Exponents for the local spectral density are given, in extremely good accord with numerical calculations. Interestingly, our analytical results for exponents are observed to describe the system rather well even for values of $ρ$ well outside the domain of applicability of perturbation theory.

Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior in Metallic Quasicrystals with Local Magnetic Moments

Motivated by the intrinsic non-Fermi-liquid behavior observed in the heavy-fermion quasicrystal $\mbox{Au}_{51}\mbox{Al}_{34}\mbox{Yb}_{15}$, we study the low-temperature behavior of dilute magnetic impurities placed in metallic quasicrystals. We find that a large fraction of the magnetic moments are not quenched down to very low temperatures $T$, leading to a power-law distribution of Kondo temperatures $P(T_{\mbox{K}})\sim T_{\mbox{K}}^{α-1}$, with a nonuniversal exponent $α$, in a remarkable similarity to the Kondo-disorder scenario found in disordered heavy-fermion metals. For $α<1$, the resulting singular $P(T_{\mbox{K}})$ induces non-Fermi-liquid behavior with diverging thermodynamic responses as $T\rightarrow0$.

The eight-fold way for optical quasicrystals

In a recent Letter we proposed a means to realize a quasicrystal with eight-fold symmetry by trapping particles in an optical potential created by four lasers. The quasicrystals obtained in this way, which are closely related to the well-known octagonal tiling, offer unique possibilities to study the effects of quasiperiodicity on physical properties. This method allows to transform the structures, to inflate or deflate them, include interactions or disorder and thus realize a large variety of theoretical models, both classical and quantum. In this paper we derive a number of interesting geometrical properties of the optical quasicrystals, and present some results obtained by numerical calculations.

Tight-binding models in a quasiperiodic optical lattice

This paper describes how one can use four standing wave laser fields to realize a two dimensional optical quasicrystal with eight-fold symmetry, closely related to the well-known octagonal or Ammann-Beenker tiling quasicrystal. We describe the structure and its properties, and the effective tight-binding model for atoms in this optical quasicrystal. Such a system, if realized experimentally, should provide valuable insights into the quantum properties of quasicrystals.

An eight-fold optical quasicrystal with cold atoms

We propose a means to realize two-dimensional quasiperiodic structures by trapping atoms in an optical potential. The structures have eight-fold symmetry and are closely related to the well-known quasiperiodic octagonal (Ammann-Beenker) tiling. We describe the geometrical properties of the structures obtained by tuning parameters of the system. We discuss some features of the corresponding tight-binding models, and experiments to probe quantum properties of this optical quasicrystal.

Geometry fluctuations and Casimir effect in a quantum antiferromagnet

We show the presence of a Casimir type force between domain walls in a two dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet subject to geometrical fluctuations. The type of fluctuations that we consider, called phason flips, are well known in quasicrystals, but less so in periodic structures. As the classical ground state energy of the antiferromagnet is unaffected by this type of fluctuation, energy changes are purely of quantum origin. We calculate the effective interaction between two parallel domain walls, defining a slab of thickness d, in such an antiferromagnet within linear spin wave theory. The interaction is anisotropic, and for a particular orientation of the slab we find that it decays as 1/d, thus, more slowly than the electromagnetic Casimir effect in the same geometry.

Geometry fluctuations in a two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet

The paper considers the effects of random fluctuations of the local spin connectivities (fluctuations of the geometry) on ground state properties of a two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet. We analyse the behavior of spins described by the Heisenberg model as a function of what we call phason flip disorder, following a terminology used for aperiodic systems. The calculations were carried out both within linear spin wave theory and using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. An "order by disorder" phenomenon is observed in this model, wherein antiferromagnetism is found to be enhanced by phason disorder. The value of the staggered order parameter increases with the number of defects, accompanied by an increase in the ground state energy of the system.

Quasiperiodic Heisenberg antiferromagnets in two dimensions

This is a review of the properties of 2d quantum quasiperiodic antiferromagnets as reported in studies that have been carried out in the last decade. Many results have been obtained for perfectly ordered as well as for disordered two dimensional bipartite quasiperiodic tilings. The theoretical methods used include spin wave theory, and renormalization group along with Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. These methods all show that the ground state of these unfrustrated antiferromagnets have Néel type order but with a highly complex spatial distribution of local staggered magnetization. The ground state properties, excitation energies and spatial dependence, structure factor, and local susceptibilities are presented. The effects of introducing geometrical disorder on the magnetic properties are discussed.

Open theoretical problems in the physics of aperiodic systems

Quasicrystals have intrigued and stimulated research in a large number of disciplines. Mathematicians, physicists, chemists, metallurgists and materials scientists have found in them a fertile ground for new insights and discoveries. In the quarter century that has ensued since the publication of the experimental observation of a quasiperiodic Al-Mn alloy \cite{shecht}, many different kinds of quasiperiodic alloys have been manufactured and studied. The physical properties of quasicrystals are no less interesting than the unusual structural properties that led to their discovery in 1984. In this review, I present some of the properties that characterize quasicrystals, briefly discuss several types of theories that have been put forward, and describe some new behaviors that might be investigated by experiment.

A phason disordered two dimensional quantum antiferromagnet

We examine a novel type of disorder in quantum antiferromagnets. Our model consists of localized spins with antiferromagnetic exchanges on a bipartite quasiperiodic structure, which is geometrically disordered in such a way that no frustration is introduced. In the limit of zero disorder, the structure is the perfect Penrose rhombus tiling. This tiling is progressively disordered by augmenting the number of random "phason flips" or local tile-reshuffling operations. The ground state remains Néel ordered, and we have studied its properties as a function of increasing disorder using linear spin wave theory and quantum Monte Carlo. We find that the ground state energy decreases, indicating enhanced quantum fluctuations with increasing disorder. The magnon spectrum is progressively smoothed, and the effective spin wave velocity of low energy magnons increases with disorder. For large disorder, the ground state energy as well as the average staggered magnetization tend towards limiting values characteristic of this type of randomized tilings.

Phason Disorder Effects in the Penrose Tiling Antiferromagnet

We discuss the ground state of a disordered two dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The starting structure is taken to be a perfectly deterministic quasiperiodic tiling, and the type of disorder we consider is geometric, involving frozen phason flips of a randomly selected subset of sites. We consider S=1/2 quantum spins placed on the vertices of the tiling, and interacting with the nearest neighbor spins with a uniform exchange interaction J. We calculate the energy spectrum, ground state energy and real space local magnetization values as a function of degree of disorder. We find that quantum fluctuations are enhanced by disorder. The real space staggered magnetization loses its symmetry properties and the average staggered magnetization decreases compared to the case of the perfect Penrose tiling. We explain our results in terms of a simple Heisenberg star cluster model that takes into account the changes of local environments due to phason flips.

Antiferromagnetism in two-dimensional quasicrystals

Quasiperiodic structures possess long range positional order, but are freed of constraints imposed by translational invariance. For spins interacting via Heisenberg couplings, one may expect therefore to find novel magnetic configurations in such structures. We have studied magnetic properties for simple two dimensional models, as a first step towards understanding experimentally studied magnetic quasicrystals such as the Zn-Mg-R(rare earth) compounds. We analyse properties of the antiferromagnetic ground state and magnon excitation modes for bipartite tilings such as the octagonal and Penrose tilings. In the absence of frustration, one has an inhomogeneous Neel-ordered ground state, with local quantum fluctuations of the local staggered magnetic order parameter. We study the spin wave spectrum and wavefunctions of such antiferromagnets within the linear spin wave approximation. Some results for spin-spin correlations in these systems are discussed.

Spin waves and local magnetizations on the Penrose tiling

We consider a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Penrose tiling, a quasiperiodic system having an inhomogeneous Neel-ordered ground state. Spin wave energies and wavefunctions are studied in the linear spin wave approximation. A linear dispersion law is found at low energies, as in other bipartite antiferromagnets, with an effective spin wave velocity lower than in the square lattice. Spatial properties of eigenmodes are characterized in several different ways. At low energies, eigenstates are relatively extended, and show multifractal scaling. At higher energies, states are more localized, and, depending on the energy, confined to sites of a specified coordination number. The ground state energy of this antiferromagnet, and local staggered magnetizations are calculated. Perpendicular space projections are presented in order to show the underlying simplicity of this "complex" ground state. A simple analytical model, the two-tier Heisenberg star, is presented to explain the staggered magnetization distribution in this antiferromagnetic system.

Penrose Quantum Antiferromagnet

The Penrose tiling is a perfectly ordered two dimensional structure with fivefold symmetry and scale invariance under site decimation. Quantum spin models on such a system can be expected to differ significantly from more conventional structures as a result of its special symmetries. In one dimension, for example, aperiodicity can result in distinctive quantum entanglement properties. In this work, we study ground state properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Penrose tiling, a model that could also be pertinent for certain three dimensional antiferromagnetic quasicrystals. We show, using spin wave theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulation, that the local staggered magnetizations strongly depend on the local coordination number z and are minimized on some sites of five-fold symmetry. We present a simple explanation for this behavior in terms of Heisenberg stars. Finally we show how best to represent this complex inhomogeneous ground state, using the "perpendicular space" representation of the tiling.
