Precompactness for homogeneous Einstein metrics on torus bundles

We prove a precompactness result for homogeneous Einstein metrics on the set of homogeneous torus bundles over a common base. This set can contain infinite families of compact simply connected homogeneous torus bundles over a common simply connected base with toral fibres of fixed dimension.

On the long time behavior of ancient homogeneous Ricci flows

We prove a precompactness theorem for invariant metrics on compact homogeneous spaces without injectivity radius bounds, assuming uniform bounds on the diameter and on all derivatives of the curvature tensor. As a consequence, we prove that every ancient homogeneous Ricci flow on a compact manifold admits a blow-down sequence that converges to a gradient shrinking Ricci soliton.

Toral symmetries of collapsed ancient solutions to the homogeneous Ricci flow

Collapsed ancient solutions to the homogeneous Ricci flow on compact manifolds occur only on the total space of principal torus bundles. Under an algebraic assumption that guarantees flowing through diagonal metrics and a tameness assumption on the collapsing directions, we prove that such solutions have additional symmetries, i.e., they are invariant under the right action of their collapsing torus. As a byproduct of these additional torus symmetries, we prove that these solutions converge, backward in time, in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology to an Einstein metric on the base of a torus bundle.

Diagonalizing the Ricci Tensor

We show that a basis of a semisimple Lie algebra of compact type, for which any diagonal left-invariant metric has a diagonal Ricci tensor, is characterized by the Lie algebraic condition of being "nice". Namely, the bracket of any two basis elements is a multiple of another basis element. This extends the work of Lauret and Will on nilpotent Lie algebras. The result follows from a more general characterization for diagonalizing the Ricci tensor for homogeneous spaces. Finally, we also study the Ricci flow behavior of diagonal metrics on cohomogeneity one manifolds.

Ricci flow does not preserve positive sectional curvature in dimension four

We find examples of cohomogeneity one metrics on $S^4$ and $\mathbb C P^2$ with positive sectional curvature that lose this property when evolved via Ricci flow. These metrics are arbitrarily small perturbations of Grove--Ziller metrics with flat planes that become instantly negatively curved under Ricci flow.

Prescribing Ricci curvature on a Product of Spheres

We prove an existence result for the prescribed Ricci curvature equation for certain doubly warped product metrics on $\mathbb{S}^{d_1+1}\times \mathbb{S}^{d_2}$, where $d_i \geq 2$. If $T$ is a metric satisfying certain curvature assumptions, we show that $T$ can be scaled independently on the two factors so as to itself be the Ricci tensor of some metric.

Making matrices better: Geometry and topology of polar and singular value decomposition

Our goal here is to see the space of matrices of a given size from a geometric and topological perspective, with emphasis on the families of various ranks and how they fit together. We pay special attention to the nearest orthogonal neighbor and nearest singular neighbor of a given matrix, both of which play central roles in matrix decompositions, and then against this visual backdrop examine the polar and singular value decompositions and some of their applications.
