Bounded excursion stable gravastars and black holes

Dynamical models of prototype gravastars were constructed in order to study their stability. The models are the Visser-Wiltshire three-layer gravastars, in which an infinitely thin spherical shell of stiff fluid divides the whole spacetime into two regions, where the internal region is de Sitter, and the external is Schwarzschild. It is found that in some cases the models represent the "bounded excursion" stable gravastars, in which the thin shell is oscillating between two finite radii, while in other cases they collapse until the formation of black holes. In the phase space, the region for the ``bounded excursion" gravastars is very small in comparison to that of black holes, but not empty. Therefore, although the existence of gravastars cannot be excluded from such dynamical models, our results do indicate that, even if gravastars indeed exist, they do not exclude the existence of black holes.

Brane cosmology in the Horava-Witten heterotic M-Theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$

We study the radion stability and radion mass in the framework of the Horava-Witten (HW) heterotic M-Theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$, and find that the radion is stable and its mass can be of the order of GeV. The gravity is localized on the visible brane, and the spectrum of the gravitational Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes is discrete and can have a mass gap of TeV. The corrections to the 4D Newtonian potential from the higher order gravitational KK modes are exponentially suppressed. Applying such a setup to cosmology, we find the generalized Friedmann-like equations on each of the two orbifold branes.

The hierarchy problem, radion mass, localization of gravity and 4D effective Newtonian potential in string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$

We present a systematical study of brane worlds in string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$. Starting with the toroidal compactification of the NS/NS sector in (D+d) dimensions, we first obtain an effective $D$-dimensional action, and then compactify one of the $(D-1)$ spatial dimensions by introducing two orbifold branes as its boundaries. By combining the Gauss-Codacci and Lanczos equations, we write down explicitly the general gravitational field equations on each of the two branes, while using distribution theory we express the matter field equations on the branes in terms of the discontinuities of the first derivatives of the matter fields. Afterwards, we address three important issues: (i) the hierarchy problem; (ii) the radion mass; and (iii) the localization of gravity, the 4-dimensional Newtonian effective potential and the Yukawa corrections due to the gravitational high-order Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes. With a very conservative estimation, we find that the radion mass is of the order of $10^{-2} GeV$. The gravity is localized on the visible brane, and the spectrum of the gravitational KK modes is discrete and can be of the order of TeV. The corrections to the 4-dimensional Newtonian potential from the higher order of gravitational KK modes are exponentially suppressed and can be safely neglected in current experiments. In an appendix, we also present a systematical and pedagogical study of the Gauss-Codacci equations and Israel's junction conditions across a (D-1)-dimensional hypersurface, which can be either spacelike or timelike.

Scalar field perturbations in Horava-Lifshitz cosmology

We study perturbations of a scalar field cosmology in Horava-Lifshitz gravity, adopting the most general setup without detailed balance but with the projectability condition. We derive the generalized Klein-Gordon equation, which is sixth-order in spatial derivatives. Then we investigate scalar field perturbations coupled to gravity in a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. In the sub-horizon regime, the metric and scalar field modes have independent oscillations with different frequencies and phases except in particular cases. On super-horizon scales, the perturbations become adiabatic during slow-roll inflation driven by a single field, and the comoving curvature perturbation is constant.

Constraints on growth index parameters from current and future observations

We use current and future simulated data of the growth rate of large scale structure in combination with data from supernova, BAO, and CMB surface measurements, in order to put constraints on the growth index parameters. We use a recently proposed parameterization of the growth index that interpolates between a constant value at high redshifts and a form that accounts for redshift dependencies at small redshifts. We also suggest here another exponential parameterization with a similar behaviour. The redshift dependent parametrizations provide a sub-percent precision level to the numerical growth function, for the full redshift range. Using these redshift parameterizations or a constant growth index, we find that current available data from galaxy redshift distortions and Lyman-alpha forests is unable to put significant constraints on any of the growth parameters. For example both $Λ$CDM and flat DGP are allowed by current growth data. We use an MCMC analysis to study constraints from future growth data, and simulate pessimistic and moderate scenarios for the uncertainties. In both scenarios, the redshift parameterizations discussed are able to provide significant constraints and rule out models when incorrectly assumed in the analysis. The values taken by the constant part of the parameterizations as well as the redshift slopes are all found to significantly rule out an incorrect background. We also find that, for our pessimistic scenario, an assumed constant growth index over the full redshift range is unable to rule out incorrect models in all cases. This is due to the fact that the slope acts as a second discriminator at smaller redshifts and therefore provide a significant test to identify the underlying gravity theory.

Black holes and stars in Horava-Lifshitz theory with projectability condition

We systematically study spherically symmetric static spacetimes filled with a fluid in the Horava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with the projectability condition, but without the detailed balance. We establish that when the spacetime is spatially Ricci flat the unique vacuum solution is the de Sitter Schwarzshcild solution, while when the spacetime has a nonzero constant curvature, there exist two different vacuum solutions; one is an (Einstein) static universe, and the other is a new spacetime. This latter spacetime is maximally symmetric and not flat. We find all the perfect fluid solutions for such spacetimes, in addition to a class of anisotropic fluid solutions of the spatially Ricci flat spacetimes. To construct spacetimes that represent stars, we investigate junction conditions across the surfaces of stars and obtain the general matching conditions with or without the presence of infinitely thin shells. It is remarkable that, in contrast to general relativity, the radial pressure of a star does not necessarily vanish on its surface even without the presence of a thin shell, due to the presence of high order derivative terms. Applying the junction conditions to our explicit solutions, we show that it is possible to match smoothly these solutions (all with nonzero radial pressures) to vacuum spacetimes without the presence of thin matter shells on the surfaces of stars.

Orbifold branes in string/M-Theory and their cosmological applications

In this brief report, we summarize our recent studies in brane cosmology in both string theory and M-Theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$. In such setups, we find that the radion is stable and its mass, with a very conservative estimation, can be of the order of $0. 1 \sim 0.01$ GeV. The hierarchy problem can be addressed by combining the large extra dimension, warped factor, and tension coupling mechanisms. Gravity is localized on the visible brane, and the spectrum of the gravitational Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes is discrete and can have a mass gap of TeV. The corrections to the 4D Newtonian potential from the higher order gravitational KK modes are exponentially suppressed. Applying such setups to cosmology, we find that a late transient acceleration of the universe seems to be the generic feature of the theory, due to the interaction between branes and bulk. A bouncing early universe is also rather easily realized.

Singularities in Horava-Lifshitz theory

Singularities in $(3+1)$-dimensional Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory of gravity are studied. These singularities can be divided into scalar, non-scalar curvature, and coordinate singularities. Because of the foliation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the theory, the number of scalars that can be constructed from the extrinsic curvature tensor $K_{ij}$, the 3-dimensional Riemann tensor and their derivatives is much large than that constructed from the 4-dimesnional Riemann tensor and its derivatives in general relativity (GR). As a result, even for the same spacetime, it may be singular in the HL theory but not in GR. Two representative families of solutions with projectability condition are studied, one is the (anti-) de Sitter Schwarzschild solutions, and the other is the Lu-Mei-Pope (LMP) solutions written in a form satisfying the projectability condition - the generalized LMP solutions. The (anti-) de Sitter Schwarzschild solutions are vacuum solutions of both HL theory and GR, while the LMP solutions with projectability condition satisfy the HL equations coupled with an anisotropic fluid with heat flow. It is found that the scalars $K$ and $K_{ij}K^{ij}$ are singular only at the center for the de Sitter Schwarzschild solution, but singular at both the center and $ r = (3M/|Λ|)^{1/3}$ for the anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild solution. The singularity at $ r = (3M/|Λ|)^{1/3}$ is absent in GR. In addition, all the generalized LMP solutions have two scalar curvature singularities, located at either $r = 0$ and $r=r_{s} > 0$, or $r=r_{1}$ and $r= r_{2}$ with $r_{2} > r_{1} > 0$, or $r=r_{s} > 0$ and $r = \infty$, depending on the choice of the free parameter $λ$.

Cosmological perturbations in Horava-Lifshitz theory without detailed balance

In the Horava-Lifshitz theory of quantum gravity, two conditions -- detailed balance and projectability -- are usually assumed. The breaking of projectability simplifies the theory, but it leads to serious problems with the theory. The breaking of detailed balance leads to a more complicated form of the theory, but it appears to resolve some of the problems. Sotiriou, Visser and Weinfurtner formulated the most general theory of Horava-Lifshitz type without detailed balance. We compute the linear scalar perturbations of the FRW model in this form of HL theory. We show that the higher-order curvature terms in the action lead to a gravitational effective anisotropic stress on small scales. Specializing to a Minkowski background, we study the spin-0 scalar mode of the graviton, using a gauge-invariant analysis, and find that it is stable in both the infrared and ultraviolet regimes for $0 \le ξ\le 2/3$. However, in this parameter range the scalar mode is a ghost.

Orbifold Branes in the $M_D \times M_{d^+} \times M_{d^-}$ Compactification of type II string on $S^1/Z_2$ and their cosmological applications

In this paper, we study the implementation of brane worlds in type II string theory. Starting with the NS/NS sector of type II string, we first compactify the $(D+d_{+} + d_{-})$-dimensional spacetime, and reduce the corresponding action to a D-dimensional effective action, where the topologies of $M_{d_{+}}$ and $M_{d_{-}}$ are arbitrary. We further compactify one of the $(D-1)$ spatial dimensions on an $S^{1}/Z_{2}$ orbifold, and derive the gravitational and matter field equations both in the bulk and on the branes. Then, we investigate two key issues in such a setup: (i) the radion stability and radion mass; and (ii) the localization of gravity, and the corresponding Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes. We show explicitly that the radion is stable and its mass can be in the order of $GeV$. In addition, the gravity is localized on the visible brane, and its spectrum of the gravitational KK towers is discrete and can have a mass gap of $TeV$, too. The high order Yukawa corrections to the 4-dimensional Newtonian potential is exponentially suppressed, and can be negligible. Applying such a setup to cosmology, we obtain explicitly the field equations in the bulk and the generalized Friedmann equations on the branes.

Growth factor parametrization in curved space

The growth rate of matter perturbation and the expansion rate of the Universe can be used to distinguish modified gravity and dark energy models in explaining cosmic acceleration. We explore here the inclusion of spatial curvature into the growth factor. We expand previous results using the approximation $Ω_{m}^γ$ and then suggest a new form, $f_a=Ω_m^γ+(γ-4/7)Ω_k$, as an approximation for the growth factor when the curvature $Ω_k$ is not negligible, and where the growth index $γ$ is usually model dependent. The expression recovers the standard results for the curved and flat $Λ$CDM and Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati models. Using the best fit values of $Ω_{m0}$ and $Ω_{k0}$ to the expansion/distance measurements from Type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillation, WMAP5, and $H(z)$ data, we fit the growth index parameter to current growth factor data and obtain $γ_Λ(Ω_{k} \not= 0) = 0.65^{+0.17}_{-0.15}$ and $γ_{DGP}(Ω_{k} \not= 0) = 0.53^{+0.14}_{-0.12}$. For the $Λ$CDM model, the 1-$σ$ observational bounds are found consistent with theoretical value, unlike the case for the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model. We also find that the current data we used is not enough to put significant constraints when the 3 parameters in $f_a$ are fit simultaneously. Importantly, we find that, in the presence of curvature, the analytical expression proposed for $f_a$ provides a better fit to the growth factor than other forms and should be useful for future high precision missions and studies.

Thermodynamics and classification of cosmological models in the Horava-Lifshitz theory of gravity

We study thermodynamics of cosmological models in the Horava-Lifshitz theory of gravity, and systematically investigate the evolution of the universe filled with a perfect fluid that has the equation of state $p=wρ$, where $p$ and $ρ$ denote, respectively, the pressure and energy density of the fluid, and $w$ is an arbitrary real constant. Depending on specific values of the free parameters involved in the models, we classify all of them into various cases. In each case the main properties of the evolution are studied in detail, including the periods of deceleration and/or acceleration, and the existence of big bang, big crunch, and big rip singularities. We pay particular attention on models that may give rise to a bouncing universe.

Colliding branes and formation of spacetime singularities in string theory

Colliding branes without $Z_{2}$ symmetry and the formation of spacetime singularities in string theory are studied. After developing the general formulas to describe such events, we study a particular class of exact solutions first in the 5-dimensional effective theory, and then lift it to the 10-dimensional spacetime. In general, the 5-dimensional spacetime is singular, due to the mutual focus of the two colliding 3-branes. Non-singular cases also exist, but with the price that both of the colliding branes violate all the three energy conditions, weak, dominant, and strong. After lifted to 10 dimensions, we find that the spacetime remains singular, whenever it is singular in the 5-dimensional effective theory. In the cases where no singularities are formed after the collision, we find that the two 8-branes necessarily violate all the energy conditions.

Stable Gravastars of Anisotropic Dark Energy

Dynamical models of prototype gravastars made of phantom energy are constructed, in which an infinitely thin spherical shell of a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p = (1-γ)σ$ divides the whole spacetime into two regions, the internal region filled with a dark energy (or phantom) fluid, and the external Schwarzschild region. It is found that in some cases the models represent the "bounded excursion" stable gravastars, where the thin shell is oscillating between two finite radii, while in other cases they collapse until the formation of black holes or normal stars. In the phase space, the region for the "bounded excursion" gravastars is very small in comparison to that of black holes, but not empty, as found in our previous papers. Therefore, although the existence of gravastars can not be completely excluded from current analysis, the opposite is not possible either, that is, even if gravastars exist, they do not exclude the existence of black holes.

Stable and "bounded excursion" gravastars, and black holes in Einstein's theory of gravity

Dynamical models of prototype gravastars are constructed and studied. The models are the Visser-Wiltshire three-layer gravastars, in which an infinitely thin spherical shell of a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p = (1-γ)σ$ divides the whole spacetime into two regions, where the internal region is de Sitter, and the external is Schwarzschild. When $γ< 1$ and $Λ\not= 0$, it is found that in some cases the models represent stable gravastars, and in some cases they represent "bounded excursion" stable gravastars, where the thin shell is oscillating between two finite radii, while in some other cases they collapse until the formation of black holes. However, when $γ\ge 1$, even with $Λ\not= 0$, only black holes are found. In the phase space, the region for both stable gravastars and "bounded excursion" gravastars is very small in comparison to that of black holes, although it is not completely empty.

The cosmological constant in the brane world of string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$

Orbifold branes in string theory are investigated, and the general field equations on the branes are given explicitly for type II and heterotic string. It is shown that the effective cosmological constant on each of the two branes can be easily lowered to its current observational value, using large extra dimensions. This is also true for type I string. The radion stability is studied by using the Goldberger-Wise mechanism, and shown explicitly that it is stable. Therefore, brane world of string theory provides a viable and built-in mechanism for solving the long-standing cosmological constant problem. Applying the formulas to cosmology, we obtain the generalized Friedmann equations on each of the two branes.

Late transient acceleration of the universe in string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$

Recently, in Gong {\em et al} \cite{GWW07} and Wang and Santos \cite{WS07} it was shown that the effective cosmological constant on each of the two orbifold branes can be easily lowered to its current observational value, by using the large extra dimensions in the framework of both M-Theory and string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$. In this paper, we study the current acceleration of the universe, using the formulas developed in \cite{WS07}. We first construct explicitly time-dependent solution to the 10-dimensional bulk of the Neveu-Schwarz/Neveu-Schwarz sector, compactified on a 5-dimensional torus. Then, we write down the generalized Friedmann equations on each of the two dynamical branes, and fit the models to the 182 gold supernova Ia data and the BAO parameter from SDSS, using both of our MINUIT and Monte-Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) codes. With the best fitting values of the parameters involved as initial conditions, we integrate the generalized Friedmann equations numerically and find the future evolution of the universe. We find that it depends on the choice of the radion potentials $V_{4}^{(I)} (I = 1, 2)$ of the branes. In particular, when choosing them to be the Goldberger-Wise potentials, $V_{4}^{(I)} = λ_{4}^{(I)} (ψ^{2} - {v_{I}}^{2})^{2}$, we find that the current acceleration of the universe driven by the effective cosmological constant is only temporary. Due to the effects of the potentials, the universe will be finally in its decelerating expansion phase again. We also study the proper distance between the two branes, and find that it remains almost constant during the whole future evolution of the universe in all the models considered.

Dark energy and cosmic curvature: Monte-Carlo Markov Chain approach

We use the Monte-Carlo Markov Chain method to explore the dark energy property and the cosmic curvature by fitting two popular dark energy parameterizations to the observational data. The new 182 gold supernova Ia data and the ESSENCE data both give good constraint on the DE parameters and the cosmic curvature for the dark energy model $w_0+w_a z/(1+z)$. The cosmic curvature is found to be $|Ω_k|\la 0.03$. For the dark energy model $w_0+w_a z/(1+z)^2$, the ESSENCE data gives better constraint on the cosmic curvature and we get $|Ω_k|\leq 0.02$.
