Rigidity of spherical product Ricci solitons

We show that $S^2\times S^2$ is isolated as a shrinking Ricci soliton in the space of metrics, up to scaling and diffeomorphism. We also prove the same rigidity for $S^2\times N$, where $N$ belongs to a certain class of closed Einstein manifolds. These results are the Ricci flow analogues of our results for Clifford-type shrinking solitons for the mean curvature flow.

Backtesting Trading Strategies with GAN To Avoid Overfitting

Many works have shown the overfitting hazard of selecting a trading strategy based only on good IS (in sample) performance. But most of them have merely shown such phenomena exist without offering ways to avoid them. We propose an approach to avoid overfitting: A good (meaning non-overfitting) trading strategy should still work well on paths generated in accordance with the distribution of the historical data. We use GAN with LSTM to learn or fit the distribution of the historical time series . Then trading strategies are backtested by the paths generated by GAN to avoid overfitting.(This paper is an tanslated English version of a thesis (10.6342/NTU201801645) which was originally written in Chinese in 2018, where some statements and claims are outdated in 2022)

A Generalized Knockoff Procedure for FDR Control in Structural Change Detection

Controlling false discovery rate (FDR) is crucial for variable selection, multiple testing, among other signal detection problems. In literature, there is certainly no shortage of FDR control strategies when selecting individual features, but the relevant works for structural change detection, such as profile analysis for piecewise constant coefficients and integration analysis with multiple data sources, are limited. In this paper, we propose a generalized knockoff procedure (GKnockoff) for FDR control under such problem settings. We prove that the GKnockoff possesses pairwise exchangeability, and is capable of controlling the exact FDR under finite sample sizes. We further explore GKnockoff under high dimensionality, by first introducing a new screening method to filter the high-dimensional potential structural changes. We adopt a data splitting technique to first reduce the dimensionality via screening and then conduct GKnockoff on the refined selection set. Furthermore, the powers of proposed methods are systematically studied. Numerical comparisons with other methods show the superior performance of GKnockoff, in terms of both FDR control and power. We also implement the proposed methods to analyze a macroeconomic dataset for detecting changes of driven effects of economic development on the secondary industry.

Codimension Bounds and Rigidity of Ancient Mean Curvature Flows by the Tangent Flow at $-\infty$

Motivated by the limiting behavior of an explicit class of compact ancient curve shortening flows, we prove codimension bounds for ancient mean curvature flows by their tangent flow at $-\infty$, generalizing a theorem for cylinders in [CM19b]. In the case of the $m$-covered circle, we apply this bound to prove a strong rigidity theorem. Furthermore, we extend this paradigm by showing that under the assumption of sufficiently rapid convergence, a compact ancient mean curvature flow is identical to its tangent flow at $-\infty$.

Local Entropy and Generic Multiplicity One Singularities of Mean Curvature Flow of Surfaces

In this paper we prove that the generic singularities of mean curvature flow of closed embedded surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ modeled by closed self-shrinkers with multiplicity has multiplicity one. Together with the previous result by Colding-Minicozzi in [CM12], we conclude that the only generic singularity of mean curvature flow of closed embedded surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ modeled by closed self-shrinkers is a multiplicity one sphere. We also construct particular perturbations of the flow to avoid those singularities with multiplicity higher than one. Our result partially addresses the well-known multiplicity one conjecture by Ilmanen.

Initial Perturbation of the Mean Curvature Flow for closed limit shrinker

This is a contribution to the program of dynamical approach to mean curvature flow initiated by Colding and Minicozzi. In this paper, we prove two main theorems. The first one is local in nature and the second one is global. In this first result, we pursue the stream of ideas of \cite{CM3} and get a slight refinement of their results. We apply the invariant manifold theory from hyperbolic dynamics to study the dynamics close to a closed shrinker that is not a sphere. In the second theorem, we show that if a hypersurface under the rescaled mean curvature flow converges to a closed shrinker that is not a sphere, then a generic perturbation on initial data would make the flow leave a small neighborhood of the shrinker and never come back.

On the Entropy of Parabolic Allen-Cahn Equation

We define a (mean curvature flow) entropy for Radon measures in $\mathbb{R}^n$ or in a compact manifold. Moreover, we prove a monotonicity formula of the entropy of the measures associated with the parabolic Allen-Cahn equations. If the ambient manifold is a compact manifold with non-negative sectional curvature and parallel Ricci curvature, this is a consequence of a new monotonicity formula for the parabolic Allen-Cahn equation. As an application, we show that when the entropy of the initial data is small enough (less than twice of the energy of the one-dimensional standing wave), the limit measure of the parabolic Allen-Cahn equation has unit density for all future time.

Sharp Entropy Bounds for Plane Curves and Dynamics of the Curve Shortening Flow

We prove that a closed immersed plane curve with total curvature $2πm$ has entropy at least $m$ times the entropy of the embedded circle, as long as it generates a type I singularity under the curve shortening flow (CSF). We construct closed immersed plane curves of total curvature $2πm$ whose entropy is less than $m$ times the entropy of the embedded circle. As an application, we extend Colding-Minicozzi's notion of a generic mean curvature flow to closed immersed plane curves by constructing a piecewise CSF whose only singularities are embedded circles and type II singularities.

Bifurcation of perturbations of non-generic closed self-shrinkers

We discover a bifurcation of the perturbations of non-generic closed self-shrinkers. If the generic perturbation is outward, then the next mean curvature flow singularity is cylindrical and collapsing from outside; if the generic perturbation is inward, then the next mean curvature flow singularity is cylindrical and collapsing from inside.

Multiplicity one for min-max theory in compact manifolds with boundary and its applications

We prove the multiplicity one theorem for min-max free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in compact manifolds with boundary of dimension between 3 and 7 for generic metrics. To approach this, we develop existence and regularity theory for free boundary hypersurface with prescribed mean curvature, which includes the regularity theory for minimizers, compactness theory, and a generic min-max theory with Morse index bounds. As applications, we construct new free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in the unit balls in Euclidean spaces and self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flows with arbitrarily large entropy.

Rigidity and Łojasiewicz inequalities for Clifford self-shrinkers

We show that the product of two round shrinking spheres is an isolated self-shrinker in any codimension, modulo rotations. Moreover we prove explicit Łojasiewicz inequalities near such products. Łojasiewicz inequalities were previously used by Schulze to prove uniqueness of tangent mean curvature flows at compact shrinkers; our results provide an explicit rate of convergence to products of two spheres.

Admissibility of solution estimators for stochastic optimization

We look at stochastic optimization problems through the lens of statistical decision theory. In particular, we address admissibility, in the statistical decision theory sense, of the natural sample average estimator for a stochastic optimization problem (which is also known as the empirical risk minimization (ERM) rule in learning literature). It is well known that for some simple stochastic optimization problems, the sample average estimator may not be admissible. This is known as {\em Stein's paradox} in the statistics literature. We show in this paper that for optimizing stochastic linear functions over compact sets, the sample average estimator is admissible. Moreover, we study problems with convex quadratic objectives subject to box constraints. Stein's paradox holds when there are no constraints and the dimension of the problem is at least three. We show that in the presence of box constraints, admissibility is recovered for dimensions 3 and 4.

Entropy in A Closed Manifold and Partial Regularity of Mean Curvature Flow Limit of Surfaces

Inspired by the idea of Colding-Minicozzi in [CM1], we define (mean curvature flow) entropy for submanifolds in a general ambient Riemannian manifold. In particular, this entropy is equivalent to area growth of a closed submanifold in a closed ambient manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature. Moreover, this entropy is monotone along the mean curvature flow in a closed Riemannian manifold with non-negative sectional curvatures and parallel Ricci curvature. As an application, we show the partial regularity of the limit of mean curvature flow of surfaces in a three dimensional Riemannian manifold with non-negative sectional curvatures and parallel Ricci curvature.

Alignment Strength and Correlation for Graphs

When two graphs have a correlated Bernoulli distribution, we prove that the alignment strength of their natural bijection strongly converges to a novel measure of graph correlation $ρ_T$ that neatly combines intergraph with intragraph distribution parameters. Within broad families of the random graph parameter settings, we illustrate that exact graph matching runtime and also matchability are both functions of $ρ_T$, with thresholding behavior starkly illustrated in matchability.

Construction of High Codimension Ancient Mean Curvature Flows

We construct a class of compact ancient solutions to the mean curvature flow in Euclidean space with high codimension. In particular, we construct higher codimensional ancient curve shortening flows. Moreover, we characterize the asymptotic behavior of these solutions. Add on remark: the construction in this paper has been discovered by Altschuler D.-Altschuler S.-Angenent-Wu in [AAAW13].

Compactness and Rigidity of $λ$-Surfaces

In this paper we develop the compactness theorem for $λ$-surface in $\mathbb R^3$ with uniform $λ$, genus, and area growth. This theorem can be viewed as a generalization of Colding-Minicozzi's compactness theorem for self-shrinkers in $\mathbb R^3$. As an application of this compactness theorem, we prove a rigidity theorem for convex $λ$-surfaces.
