Arrhythmia Classifier Using Convolutional Neural Network with Adaptive Loss-aware Multi-bit Networks Quantization

Cardiovascular disease (CVDs) is one of the universal deadly diseases, and the detection of it in the early stage is a challenging task to tackle. Recently, deep learning and convolutional neural networks have been employed widely for the classification of objects. Moreover, it is promising that lots of networks can be deployed on wearable devices. An increasing number of methods can be used to realize ECG signal classification for the sake of arrhythmia detection. However, the existing neural networks proposed for arrhythmia detection are not hardware-friendly enough due to a remarkable quantity of parameters resulting in memory and power consumption. In this paper, we present a 1-D adaptive loss-aware quantization, achieving a high compression rate that reduces memory consumption by 23.36 times. In order to adapt to our compression method, we need a smaller and simpler network. We propose a 17 layer end-to-end neural network classifier to classify 17 different rhythm classes trained on the MIT-BIH dataset, realizing a classification accuracy of 93.5%, which is higher than most existing methods. Due to the adaptive bitwidth method making important layers get more attention and offered a chance to prune useless parameters, the proposed quantization method avoids accuracy degradation. It even improves the accuracy rate, which is 95.84%, 2.34% higher than before. Our study achieves a 1-D convolutional neural network with high performance and low resources consumption, which is hardware-friendly and illustrates the possibility of deployment on wearable devices to realize a real-time arrhythmia diagnosis.

FaaSNet: Scalable and Fast Provisioning of Custom Serverless Container Runtimes at Alibaba Cloud Function Compute

Serverless computing, or Function-as-a-Service (FaaS), enables a new way of building and scaling applications by allowing users to deploy fine-grained functions while providing fully-managed resource provisioning and auto-scaling. Custom FaaS container support is gaining traction as it enables better control over OSes, versioning, and tooling for modernizing FaaS applications. However, providing rapid container provisioning introduces non-trivial challenges for FaaS providers, since container provisioning is costly, and real-world FaaS workloads exhibit highly dynamic patterns. In this paper, we design FaaSNet, a highly-scalable middleware system for accelerating FaaS container provisioning. FaaSNet is driven by the workload and infrastructure requirements of the FaaS platform at one of the world's largest cloud providers, Alibaba Cloud Function Compute. FaaSNet enables scalable container provisioning via a lightweight, adaptive function tree (FT) structure. FaaSNet uses an I/O efficient, on-demand fetching mechanism to further reduce provisioning costs at scale. We implement and integrate FaaSNet in Alibaba Cloud Function Compute. Evaluation results show that FaaSNet: (1) finishes provisioning 2500 function containers on 1000 virtual machines in 8.3 seconds, (2) scales 13.4x and 16.3x faster than Alibaba Cloud's current FaaS platform and a state-of-the-art P2P container registry (Kraken), respectively, and (3) sustains a bursty workload using 75.2% less time than an optimized baseline.

Wukong: A Scalable and Locality-Enhanced Framework for Serverless Parallel Computing

Serverless computing is increasingly being used for parallel computing, which have traditionally been implemented as stateful applications. Executing complex, burst-parallel, directed acyclic graph (DAG) jobs poses a major challenge for serverless execution frameworks, which will need to rapidly scale and schedule tasks at high throughput, while minimizing data movement across tasks. We demonstrate that, for serverless parallel computations, decentralized scheduling enables scheduling to be distributed across Lambda executors that can schedule tasks in parallel, and brings multiple benefits, including enhanced data locality, reduced network I/Os, automatic resource elasticity, and improved cost effectiveness. We describe the implementation and deployment of our new serverless parallel framework, called Wukong, on AWS Lambda. We show that Wukong achieves near-ideal scalability, executes parallel computation jobs up to 68.17x faster, reduces network I/O by multiple orders of magnitude, and achieves 92.96% tenant-side cost savings compared to numpywren.

Anomalous thermal transport in metallic transition-metal nitrides originated from strong electron-phonon interactions

Metallic transition-metal nitrides (TMNs) are promising conductive ceramics for many applications, whose thermal transport is of great importance in device design. It is found metallic TiN and HfN hold anomalous thermal transport behaviors compared to common metals and nonmetallic TMNs. They have extremely large intrinsic phonon thermal conductivity mainly due to the large acoustic-optic phonon frequency gaps. The phonon thermal conductivity is reduced by two orders of magnitude as the phonon-isotope and phonon-electron scatterings are considered, which also induce the nontrivial temperature-independent behavior of phonon thermal conductivity. Nesting Fermi surfaces exist in both TiN and HfN, which cause the strong electron-phonon coupling strengths and heavily harm the transport of phonons and electrons. The phonon component takes an abnormally large ratio in total thermal conductivity, as 29% for TiN and 26% for HfN at 300 K. The results for thin films are also presented and it is shown that the phonon thermal conductivity can be efficiently limited by size. Our findings provide a deep understanding on the thermal transport in metallic TMNs and expand the scope of heat conduction theory in metal.

InfiniCache: Exploiting Ephemeral Serverless Functions to Build a Cost-Effective Memory Cache

Internet-scale web applications are becoming increasingly storage-intensive and rely heavily on in-memory object caching to attain required I/O performance. We argue that the emerging serverless computing paradigm provides a well-suited, cost-effective platform for object caching. We present InfiniCache, a first-of-its-kind in-memory object caching system that is completely built and deployed atop ephemeral serverless functions. InfiniCache exploits and orchestrates serverless functions' memory resources to enable elastic pay-per-use caching. InfiniCache's design combines erasure coding, intelligent billed duration control, and an efficient data backup mechanism to maximize data availability and cost-effectiveness while balancing the risk of losing cached state and performance. We implement InfiniCache on AWS Lambda and show that it: (1) achieves 31 -- 96X tenant-side cost savings compared to AWS ElastiCache for a large-object-only production workload, (2) can effectively provide 95.4% data availability for each one hour window, and (3) enables comparative performance seen in a typical in-memory cache.

In Search of a Fast and Efficient Serverless DAG Engine

Python-written data analytics applications can be modeled as and compiled into a directed acyclic graph (DAG) based workflow, where the nodes are fine-grained tasks and the edges are task dependencies. Such analytics workflow jobs are increasingly characterized by short, fine-grained tasks with large fan-outs. These characteristics make them well-suited for a new cloud computing model called serverless computing or Function-as-a-Service (FaaS), which has become prevalent in recent years. The auto-scaling property of serverless computing platforms accommodates short tasks and bursty workloads, while the pay-per-use billing model of serverless computing providers keeps the cost of short tasks low. In this paper, we thoroughly investigate the problem space of DAG scheduling in serverless computing. We identify and evaluate a set of techniques to make DAG schedulers serverless-aware. These techniques have been implemented in Wukong, a serverless, DAG scheduler attuned to AWS Lambda. Wukong provides decentralized scheduling through a combination of static and dynamic scheduling. We present the results of an empirical study in which Wukong is applied to a range of microbenchmark and real-world DAG applications. Results demonstrate the efficacy of Wukong in minimizing the performance overhead introduced by AWS Lambda --- Wukong achieves competitive performance compared to a serverful DAG scheduler, while improving the performance of real-world DAG jobs by as much as 3.1X at larger scale.

Ensuring Readability and Data-fidelity using Head-modifier Templates in Deep Type Description Generation

A type description is a succinct noun compound which helps human and machines to quickly grasp the informative and distinctive information of an entity. Entities in most knowledge graphs (KGs) still lack such descriptions, thus calling for automatic methods to supplement such information. However, existing generative methods either overlook the grammatical structure or make factual mistakes in generated texts. To solve these problems, we propose a head-modifier template-based method to ensure the readability and data fidelity of generated type descriptions. We also propose a new dataset and two automatic metrics for this task. Experiments show that our method improves substantially compared with baselines and achieves state-of-the-art performance on both datasets.

CN-Probase: A Data-driven Approach for Large-scale Chinese Taxonomy Construction

Taxonomies play an important role in machine intelligence. However, most well-known taxonomies are in English, and non-English taxonomies, especially Chinese ones, are still very rare. In this paper, we focus on automatic Chinese taxonomy construction and propose an effective generation and verification framework to build a large-scale and high-quality Chinese taxonomy. In the generation module, we extract isA relations from multiple sources of Chinese encyclopedia, which ensures the coverage. To further improve the precision of taxonomy, we apply three heuristic approaches in verification module. As a result, we construct the largest Chinese taxonomy with high precision about 95% called CN-Probase. Our taxonomy has been deployed on Aliyun, with over 82 million API calls in six months.

A DCT And SVD based Watermarking Technique To Identify Tag

With the rapid development of the multimedia, the secure of the multimedia is get more concerned. as far as we know , Digital watermarking is an effective way to protect copyright. The watermark must be generally hidden does not affect the quality of the original image. In this paper,a novel way based on discrete cosine transform(DCT) and singular value decomposition(SVD) .In the proposed way,we decomposition the image into 8*8 blocks, next we use the DCT to get the transformed block, then we choose the diagonal to embed the information, after we do this, we recover the image and then we decomposition the image to 8*8 blocks,we use the SVD way to get the diagonal matrix and embed the information in the matrix. next we extract the information use both inverse of DCT and SVD, as we all know, after we embed the information seconded time , the information we first information we embed must be changed, we choose a measure way called Peak Signal to Noise Ratio(PSNR) to estimate the similarity of the two image, and set a threshold to ensure whether the information is same or not.
