No-go theorem for spontaneous vectorization

Generalized vector-tensor theories of gravity have drawn attention for admitting hairy black hole solutions, thereby circumventing the standard no-hair theorems. It remains an open question, however, how such black holes may form starting from reasonable initial conditions. It has been suggested that vector hair may grow spontaneously as a result of the field developing a negative effective mass squared $-$ the so-called spontaneous vectorization mechanism. We demonstrate that this is not possible if the initial state is a hairless black hole, a result that applies to essentially all stationary and axisymmetric solutions of interest in general relativity. More precisely, we prove that the appearance of a negative effective mass squared for the vector field must necessarily be accompanied by ghost- or gradient-type instabilities. Demanding the absence of such instabilities translates into interesting bounds on the coupling constants of the theory as functions of the black hole parameters. In particular, we discover that a Kerr black hole may become unstable when the spin increases above a certain critical value.

Chaotic motion of particle in regular black hole supported by Galactic halo

We investigate the chaotic dynamics of the massless test particles moving in the regular black hole supported by a Dehnen-type dark matter halo. By limiting the particle within a external harmonic potential, we employ Poincar\'e sections and Lyapunov exponents as diagnostic tools and analyze the transition from regular to chaotic motion as the halo scale parameter $a$ increase. These findings indicate that the galactic halo acts as a primary driver of chaos in this regular black hole geometry, significantly distorting the phase space structure near the potential center, acting as a primary driver of chaos. Crucially, our results elucidate the distinct imprint of dark matter halos on particle dynamics, suggesting that observing such chaotic signatures in astrophysical systems could provide a novel method for detecting and constraining the properties of dark matter in future observations.

Thermodynamics of the FRW Universe in Generalized Proca Theory

We investigate the thermodynamics of a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe within the framework of Generalized Proca (GP) theory, a comprehensive vector-tensor theory. By adopting two distinct dark energy models in GP, we derive the corresponding modified Friedmann equations, the thermodynamic first law for the apparent horizon, and the equation of state for these models. For the first model, characterized by power-law couplings and an ansatz linking the Proca field to the Hubble parameter, we analytically demonstrate the existence of a critical point in the pressure-volume$(P-V)$ diagram, indicating a $P-V$ phase transition. For the second model, defined by a Proca field marginal coupled to curvature, we show that there is no phase transition when the coupling constants are selected within the range permitted by observations. This investigation not only extends the FRW thermodynamics to vector-tensor theories but also demonstrates that cosmological phase transitions can serve as a powerful diagnostic tool for distinguishing viable dark energy models in GP theory.

Black hole destabilization via trapped quasi-normal modes

In the presence of non-minimal gravitational couplings, matter field perturbations on a static black hole spacetime may develop unphysical poles in their linearized equations. Physical solutions confined in the domain between the event horizon and a pole satisfy a boundary value problem, although with boundary conditions which are different from standard quasi-normal modes. We refer to them as "trapped quasi-normal modes". Focusing on a Schwarzschild black hole in Einstein-Proca theory, we find that trapped quasi-normal modes accurately capture the behavior of perturbations under time evolution. In particular, axial-vector modes are unstable, with a growth rate that increases with multipole number. More interestingly, we uncover a new instability that affects monopole perturbations. These results confirm the existence of a novel destabilization mechanism of black holes by non-minimally coupled vector fields, with potential implications to well-studied models of modified gravity and cosmology based on vector particles.

Collisional Penrose process of extended test particles near an extremal Kerr black hole

We investigate the collisional Penrose process of extended test particles near extremal Kerr black holes using the pole-dipole-quadrupole approximation. We analyze the motion of the test particles and examine the dynamics and maximum efficiency of energy extraction in this process. Our results demonstrate that the maximum extracted energy in the collisional Penrose process is influenced by the spin s and quadrupolar parameter CES2 of the test particles. Specifically, we observe that, at a fixed collisional position, the energy extraction efficiency decreases as the spin increases for either the pole-dipole or the pole-dipole-quadrupole approximation case. Furthermore, for a fixed spin, the energy extraction efficiency is higher in the pole-dipole-quadrupole approximation compared to the pole-dipole approximation. These findings provide insight into the role of the internal structures of the test particles in the collisional Penrose process.

Splitting the Echoes of Black Holes in Einstein-nonlinear Electrodynamic Theories

Black hole echo is an important observable that can help us better understand gravitational theories. We present that the non-linear electrodynamic black holes can admit the multi-peak effective potential for the scalar perturbations, which can give rise to the echoes. After choosing suitable parameters, the effective potential can exhibit a structure with more than two peaks. Putting the initial wave packet released outside the peaks, we find that the time-domain profile of the echo will split when the peaks of the effective potential change from two to three. This is a phenomenon of black hole echo and it might be possible to determine the geometric structure of the black hole according to this phenomenon through gravitational wave detection.

Weak Cosmic Censorship Conjecture of Hairy Black Holes in Einstein Gravity

Apart from the Kerr-Newman black holes, the hairy black holes in general relativity have been widely investigated in the gravity and cosmology. In this paper, we extend the Sorce-Wald method to prove the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) of the static and spherically symmetric hairy black holes in the Einstein gravity without using the explicit expressions of the metric and lagrangian for matter fields. We examine the WCCC in the collision process without requiring the spherically symmetry of the perturbation matter fields. After assuming the stability condition of spacetime and applying the Gaussian null coordinates into the variational identities, we derive the first two order perturbation inequalities which reflects the null energy condition of the matter fields. As a result, we find that nearly extremal static hairy black hole cannot be destroyed in the above perturbation process under the second-order approximation. Our result implies that the valid of the WCCC is universal for the hairy black hole in the Einstein gravity as long as the matter fields satisfy the null energy condition under the perturbation level.

Strong Cosmic Censorship in Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet Theory

Recently, it is found that the strong cosmic censorship (SCC) is violated in RNdS black hole by a minimal coupled neutral massless scalar field at the linear perturbation level. For the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory which is famous for the spontaneous scalarization phenomenon, there exists the scalar field coupled with the Gauss-Bonnet term. Whether the SCC of the RNdS black hole can be repaired by the non-minimal coupled scalar field perturbation at the linear level becomes an interesting question. In this paper, we firstly investigate the extendibility of the metric beyond the Cauchy horizon in the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory. Then, we examine the SCC of the RNdS black hole by calculating the quasinormal mode of the non-minimal coupled scalar field and find that the SCC can be recovered under some parameters.

Black Hole Zeroth Law in Horndeski Gravity

The four laws of black hole mechanics have been put forward for a long time. However, the zeroth law, which states that the surface gravity of a stationary black hole is a constant on the event horizon, still lacks universal proof in various modified gravitational theories. In this paper, we study the zeroth law {in a special Horndeski gravity}, which is an interesting gravitational theory with a nonminimally coupled scalar field. After assuming that {the nonminimally coupled scalar field has the same symmetries with the spacetime,} the minimally coupled matter fields satisfy the dominant energy condition and the Horndeski gravity has a smooth limit to Einstein gravity when the coupling constant approaches zero, we prove the zeroth law based on the gravitational equation in Horndeski gravity without any assumption to the spacetime symmetries.

Gedanken experiments at high-order approximation: Kerr black hole cannot be overspun

Sorce and Wald proposed a new version of gedanken experiments to examine the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) in Kerr-Newmann black holes. However, their discussion only includes the second-order approximation of perturbation and there exists an optimal condition such that the validity of the WCCC is determined by the higher-order approximations. Therefore, in this paper, we extended their discussions into the high-order approximations to study the WCCC in a nearly extremal Kerr black hole. After assuming that the spacetime satisfies the stability condition and the perturbation matter fields satisfy the null energy condition, based on the Noether charge method by Iyer and Wald, we completely calculate the first four order perturbation inequalities and discuss the corresponding gedanken experiment to overspin the Kerr black hole. As a result, we find that the nearly extremal Kerr black holes cannot be destroyed under the fourth-order approximation of perturbation. Then, by using the mathematical induction, we strictly prove the $n$th order perturbation inequality when the first $(n-1)$ order perturbation inequalities are saturated. Using these results, we discuss the first $100$ order approximation of the gedanken experiments and find that the WCCC in Kerr black hole is valid under the higher-order approximation of perturbation. Our investigation implies that the WCCC might be strictly satisfied in Kerr black holes under the perturbation level.

First Law of Black Hole in the Gravitational Electromagnetic System

After considering the quantum corrections of Einstein-Maxwell theory, the effective theory will contain some higher-curvature terms and nonminimally coupled electromagnetic fields. In this paper, we study the first law of black holes in the gravitational electromagnetic system with the Lagrangian $\math{L}(g_{ab}, R_{abcd}, F_{ab})$. Firstly, we calculate the Noether charge and the variational identity in this theory, and then generically derive the first law of thermodynamics for an asymptotically flat stationary axisymmetrical symmetric black hole without the requirement that the electromagnetic field is smooth on the bifurcation surface. Our results indicate that the first law of black hole thermodynamics might be valid for the Einstein-Maxwell theory with some quantum corrections in the effective region.

Constraints on High-Order Gravitational Theories from Weak Cosmic Censorship

Weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) is a basic principle that guarantees the predictability of spacetime and should be valid in any classical theories. One critical scientific question is whether the WCCC can serve as a constraint to the gravitational theories. To explore this question, we perform the first-order Sorce-Wald's gedanken experiments to test the WCCC in the higher-order gravitational theories and find that there exists a destruction condition $S_\text{ext}'(r_h)<0$ for the extremal black holes. To show the power of this condition, we evaluate the constraints given by WCCC in the quadratic and cubic gravitational theories. Our investigation makes an essential step toward applying WCCC to constrain the modified gravitational theories, and opens a new avenue to judge which theory is reasonable.

Comment on "Constraints on Low-Energy Effective Theories from Weak Cosmic Censorship"

Recently, it was argued in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf126}, 031102 (2021)] that the WCCC can serve as a constraint to high-order effective field theories. However, we find there exists a key error in their approximate black hole solution. After correcting it, their calculation cannot show the ability of WCCC to constrain the gravitational theories.
