Displacement Operator Formalism for Renormalization and Gauge Dependence to All Orders

We present a new method for determining the renormalization of Green functions to all orders in perturbation theory, which we call the displacement operator formalism, or the D-formalism, in short. This formalism exploits the fact that the renormalized Green functions may be calculated by displacing by an infinite amount the renormalized fields and parameters of the theory with respect to the unrenormalized ones. With the help of this formalism, we are able to obtain the precise form of the deformations induced to the Nielsen identities after renormalization, and thus derive the exact dependence of the renormalized Green functions on the renormalized gauge-fixing parameter to all orders. As a particular non-trivial example, we calculate the gauge-dependence of $\tanβ$ at two loops in the framework of an Abelian Higgs model, using a gauge-fixing scheme that preserves the Higgs-boson low-energy theorem for off-shell Green functions. Various possible applications and future directions are briefly discussed.

Probing Minimal 5D Extensions of the Standard Model

We analyze non-universal 5D standard model extension, where some or all of the gauge and Higgs fields propagate in a flat extra dimension, while all other degrees of freedom are localized on a S^1/Z_2 orbifold brane. From LEP data, model-dependent bounds on the compactification scale M between 4 and 6 TeV are derived. We analyze the correlations between M and the SM Higgs mass m_H. Investigating the prospects at an e^+e^- linear collider such as TESLA, we show that the so-called GigaZ option has the potential to improve the LEP bounds by about a factor 2. At the center of mass energy of 800 GeV and with an integrated luminosity of 10^3 fb^{-1}, linear collider experiments can probe compactification scales up to 20-30 TeV and beyond, depending on the systematic errors.

LHC Signatures of Resonant CP Violation in a Minimal Supersymmetric Higgs Sector

We present the general formalism for studying CP-violating phenomena in the production, mixing and decay of a coupled system of CP-violating neutral Higgs bosons at high-energy colliders. Considering the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) Higgs sector in which CP violation is radiatively induced by phases in the soft supersymmetry-breaking third-generation trilinear squark couplings and gaugino masses, we apply our formalism to neutral Higgs production via {\bar b}b, gg and W^+ W^- collisions at the LHC. We discuss CP asymmetries in the longitudinal and transverse polarizations of τ^+ τ^- pairs. The signatures of CP violation are more prominent in the production via gg and W^+ W^- than via {\bar b}b, and are resonantly enhanced when two (or all three) neutral Higgs bosons are nearly degenerate with mass differences comparable to their decay widths. Such scenarios occur naturally in the MSSM for values of \tanβ>~ 5 (30) and large (small) charged Higgs-boson masses. We analyze representative examples with large mixing between the three neutral Higgs bosons weighing about 120 GeV, that may exhibit observable CP asymmetries even as large as 80%.

Probing Minimal 5D Extensions of the Standard Model: From LEP to an e^+e^- Linear Collider

We derive new improved constraints on the compactification scale of minimal 5-dimensional (5D) extensions of the Standard Model (SM) from electroweak and LEP2 data and estimate the reach of an e^+e^- linear collider such as TESLA. Our analysis is performed within the framework of non-universal 5D models, where some of the gauge and Higgs fields propagate in the extra dimension, while all fermions are localized on a S^1/Z_2 orbifold fixed point. Carrying out simultaneous multi-parameter fits of the compactification scale and the SM parameters to the data, we obtain lower bounds on this scale in the range between 4 and 6 TeV. These fits also yield the correlation of the compactification scale with the SM Higgs mass. Investigating the prospects at TESLA, we show that the so-called GigaZ option has the potential to improve these bounds by about a factor 2 in almost all 5D models. Furthermore, at the center of mass energy of 800 GeV and with an integrated luminosity of 10^3 fb^-1, linear collider experiments can probe compactification scales up to 20-30 TeV, depending on the control of systematic errors.

Resonant Leptogenesis

We study the scenario of thermal leptogenesis in which the leptonic asymmetries are resonantly enhanced through the mixing of nearly degenerate heavy Majorana neutrinos that have mass differences comparable to their decay widths. Field-theoretic issues arising from the proper subtraction of real intermediate states from the lepton-number-violating scattering processes are addressed in connection with an earlier developed resummation approach to unstable particle mixing in decay amplitudes. The pertinent Boltzmann equations are numerically solved after the enhanced heavy-neutrino self-energy effects on scatterings and the dominant gauge-mediated collision terms are included. We show that resonant leptogenesis can be realized with heavy Majorana neutrinos even as light as about 1 TeV, in complete accordance with the current solar and atmospheric neutrino data.

Resummed Effective Lagrangian for Higgs-Mediated FCNC Interactions in the CP-Violating MSSM

We derive the general resummed effective Lagrangian for Higgs-mediated flavour-changing neutral-current (FCNC) interactions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), without resorting to particular assumptions that rely on the squark-mass or the quark-Yukawa structure of the theory. In our derivation we also include the possibility of explicit CP violation through the Cabibbo--Kobayashi--Maskawa mixing matrix and soft supersymmetry-breaking mass terms. The advantages of our resummed FCNC effective Lagrangian are explicitly demonstrated within the context of phenomenologically motivated scenarios. We obtain new testable predictions in the large $\tanβ$ regime of the theory for CP-conserving and CP-violating observables related to the $K$- and $B$-meson systems, such as $ΔM_{K,B}$, $ε_K$, $ε'/ε$, ${\cal B}(B_{d,s} \to \ell^+\ell^-)$ and their associated leptonic CP asymmetries. Finally, based on our resummed FCNC effective Lagrangian, we can identify configurations in the soft supersymmetry-breaking parameter space, for which a kind of a Glashow--Iliopoulos--Maiani-cancellation mechanism becomes operative and hence all Higgs-mediated, $\tanβ$-enhanced effects on $K$- and $B$-meson FCNC observables vanish.

LEP Constraints on 5-Dimensional Extensions of the Standard Model

We study minimal 5-dimensional extensions of the Standard Model, in which all or only some of the SU(2)$_L$ and U(1)$_Y$ gauge fields and Higgs bosons propagate in the fifth compact dimension. In all the 5-dimensional settings, the fermions are assumed to be localized on a 3-brane. In addition, we present the consistent procedure for quantizing 5-dimensional models in the generalized $R_ξ$ gauge. Bounds on the compactification scale between 4 and 6 TeV, depending on the model, are established by analyzing electroweak precision measurements and LEP2 cross sections.

Heavy Quarks on the Lattice

I review the basic ideas behind lattice QCD calculations that involve charm and bottom quarks. I report on the progress in getting the correct hyperfine splitting in charmonium from lattice QCD. Some of the basic technology behind numerical lattice QCD calculations is explained by studying some specific examples: computation of the charm quark mass, and the calculation of fB.

Higgs-Mediated Electric Dipole Moments in the MSSM: An Application to Baryogenesis and Higgs Searches

We perform a comprehensive study of the dominant two- and higher-loop contributions to the $^{205}$Tl, neutron and muon electric dipole moments induced by Higgs bosons, third-generation quarks and squarks, charginos and gluinos in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We find that strong correlations exist among the contributing CP-violating operators, for large stop, gluino and chargino phases, and for a wide range of values of $\tanβ$ and charged Higgs-boson masses, giving rise to large suppressions of the $^{205}$Tl and neutron electric dipole moments below their present experimental limits. Based on this observation, we discuss the constraints that the non-observation of electric dipole moments imposes on the radiatively-generated CP-violating Higgs sector and on the mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis in the MSSM. We improve previously suggested benchmark scenarios of maximal CP violation for analyzing direct searches of CP-violating MSSM Higgs bosons at high-energy colliders, and stress the important complementary rôle that a possible high-sensitivity measurement of the muon electric dipole moment to the level of $10^{-24}$ $e$ cm can play in such analyses.

Gauge and Scheme Dependence of Mixing Matrix Renormalization

We revisit the issue of mixing matrix renormalization in theories that include Dirac or Majorana fermions. We show how a gauge-variant on-shell renormalized mixing matrix can be related to a manifestly gauge-independent one within a generalized ${\bar {\rm MS}}$ scheme of renormalization. This scheme-dependent relation is a consequence of the fact that in any scheme of renormalization, the gauge-dependent part of the mixing-matrix counterterm is ultra-violet safe and has a pure dispersive form. Employing the unitarity properties of the theory, we can successfully utilize the afore-mentioned scheme-dependent relation to preserve basic global or local symmetries of the bare Lagrangian through the entire process of renormalization. As an immediate application of our study, we derive the gauge-independent renormalization-group equations of mixing matrices in a minimal extension of the Standard Model with isosinglet neutrinos.

Electroweak Constraints on Minimal Higher-Dimensional Extensions of the Standard Model

We derive electroweak constraints on the compactification scale of minimal 5-dimensional extensions of the Standard Model, in which all or only some of the SU(2)$_L$ and U(1)$_Y$ gauge fields and Higgs bosons feel the presence of the fifth dimension. In our analysis, we assume that the fermions are always localized on a 3-brane. In this context, we also present the consistent quantization procedure of the higher-dimensional models in the generalized $R_ξ$ gauge. We find that the usually derived lower bound of $\sim 4$ TeV on the compactification scale may be significantly lowered to $\sim 3$ TeV if the SU(2)$_L$ gauge boson is the only particle that propagates in all 5 dimensions.

Minimal Higher-Dimensional Extensions of the Standard Model and Electroweak Observables

We consider minimal 5-dimensional extensions of the Standard Model compactified on an $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold, in which the SU(2)$_L$ and U(1)$_Y$ gauge fields and Higgs bosons may or may not all propagate in the fifth dimension while the observable matter is always assumed to be confined to a 4-dimensional subspace. We pay particular attention to consistently quantize the higher-dimensional models in the generalized $R_ξ$ gauge and derive analytic expressions for the mass spectrum of the resulting Kaluza-Klein states and their couplings to matter. Based on recent data from electroweak precision tests, we improve previous limits obtained in the 5-dimensional Standard Model with a common compactification radius and extend our analysis to other possible 5-dimensional Standard-Model constructions. We find that the usually derived lower bound of $\sim 4$ TeV on an universal compactification scale may be considerably relaxed to $\sim 3$ TeV in a minimal scenario, in which the SU(2)$_L$ gauge boson is the only field that feels the presence of the fifth dimension.

Laboratory Limits on Theories with Sterile Neutrinos in the Bulk

We discuss the phenomenological consequences of theories which describe sterile neutrinos in large extra dimensions, in the so-called bulk. We briefly outline how the cumulative non-decoupling effect due to the tower of Kaluza-Klein singlet neutrinos may equivalently be described by a higher-dimensional effective theory with original order-unity Yukawa couplings. Based on this cumulative phenomenon, we obtain strong constraints on the fundamental quantum gravity scale and/or on the higher-dimensional Yukawa couplings.

Cumulative Non-Decoupling Effects of Kaluza-Klein Neutrinos in Electroweak Processes

In Kaluza-Klein theories of low-scale quantum gravity, gravitons and isosinglet neutrinos may propagate in a higher-dimensional space with large compact dimensions, whereas all particles of the Standard Model are confined on a (1+3)-dimensional subspace. After compactification of the extra dimensions, the resulting Yukawa couplings of the Kaluza-Klein neutrinos to the lepton doublets become naturally very suppressed by a higher-dimensional volume factor, in agreement with phenomenological observations. We show that one-loop effects induced by Kaluza-Klein neutrinos, albeit tiny individually, act cumulatively in electroweak processes, giving rise to a non-decoupling behaviour for large values of the higher-dimensional Yukawa couplings. Owing to the non-decoupling effects of Kaluza-Klein neutrinos, we can derive stronger constraints on the parameters of the theory that originate from the non-observation of flavour-violating and universality-breaking phenomena, which involve the W and Z bosons, and the e, $μ$ and $τ$ leptons.

Loop-Induced CP Violation in the Gaugino and Higgsino Sectors of Supersymmetric Theories

We show that the gaugino and higgsino sectors of supersymmetric theories can naturally acquire observable CP violation through radiative effects which originate from large CP-violating trilinear couplings of the Higgs bosons to the third-generation scalar quarks. These CP-violating loop effects are not attainable by evolving the supersymmetric renormalization-group equations from a higher unification scale down to the electroweak one. We briefly discuss the phenomenological consequences of such a scenario, and as an example, calculate the two-loop contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment generated by the one-loop chromo-electric dipole moment of the gluino.

Higgs-Boson Two-Loop Contributions to Electric Dipole Moments in the MSSM

The complete set of Higgs-boson two-loop contributions to electric dipole moments of the electron and neutron is calculated in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The electric dipole moments are induced by CP-violating trilinear couplings of the `CP-odd' and charged Higgs bosons to the scalar top and bottom quarks. Numerical estimates of the individual two-loop contributions to electric dipole moments are given.

New two-loop contribution to electric dipole moment in supersymmetric theories

We calculate a new type of two-loop contributions to the electric dipole moments of the electron and neutron in supersymmetric theories. The new contributions are originated from the potential CP violation in the trilinear couplings of the Higgs bosons to the scalar-top or the scalar-bottom quarks. These couplings were previously very weakly constrained. The electric dipole moments are induced through a mechanism analogous to that due to Barr and Zee. We find observable effects for a sizeable portion of the parameter space related to the third generation scalar-quarks in the minimal supersymmetric standard model which cannot be excluded by earlier considerations.
