Combinatorial Growth in the Modular Group

We consider an exhaustion of the modular orbifold by compact subsurfaces and show that the growth rate, in terms of word length, of the reciprocal geodesics on such subsurfaces (so named low lying reciprocal geodesics) converge to the growth rate of the full set of reciprocal geodesics on the modular orbifold. We derive a similar result for the low lying geodesics and their growth rate convergence to the growth rate of the full set of closed geodesics.

Prime orthogeodesics, concave cores and families of identities on hyperbolic surfaces

We prove and explore a family of identities relating lengths of curves and orthogeodesics of hyperbolic surfaces. These identities hold over a large space of metrics including ones with hyperbolic cone points, and in particular, show how to extend a result of the first author to surfaces with cusps. One of the main ingredients in the approach is a partition of the set of orthogeodesics into sets depending on their dynamical behavior, which can be understood geometrically by relating them to geodesics on orbifold surfaces. These orbifold surfaces turn out to be exactly on the boundary of the space in which the underlying identity holds.

Geometric filling curves on surfaces

This note is about a type of quantitative density of closed geodesics on closed hyperbolic surfaces. The main results are upper bounds on the length of the shortest closed geodesic that $\varepsilon$-fills the surface.

Geodesically Complete Hyperbolic Structures

In the first part of this work we explore the geometry of infinite type surfaces and the relationship between its convex core and space of ends. In particular, we show that a geodesically complete hyperbolic surface is made up of its convex core with funnels attached along the simple closed geodesic components and half-planes attached along simple open geodesic components. We next consider gluing infinitely many pairs of pants along their cuffs to obtain an infinite hyperbolic surface. Such a surface is not always complete; for example, if the cuffs grow fast enough and the twists are small. We prove that there always exists a choice of twists in the gluings such that the surface is complete regardless of the size of the cuffs. In the second part we consider complete hyperbolic flute surfaces with rapidly increasing cuff lengths and prove that the corresponding quasiconformal Teichmüller space is incomplete in the length spectrum metric. Moreover, we describe the twist coordinates and convergence in terms of the twist coordinates on the closure of the quasiconformal Teichmüller space.

Generating the Mobius group with involution conjugacy classes

A {\it $k$-involution} is an involution with a fixed point set of codimension $k$. The conjugacy class of such an involution, denoted $S_k$, generates $\text{Möb}(n)$-the the group of isometries of hyperbolic $n$-space-if $k$ is odd, and its orientation preserving subgroup if $k$ is even. In this paper, we supply effective lower and upper bounds for the $S_k$ word length of $\text{Möb}(n)$ if $k$ is odd, and the $S_k$ word length of $\text{Möb}^+(n)$, if $k$ is even. As a consequence, for a fixed codimension $k$ the length of $\text{Möb}^{+}(n)$ with respect to $S_k$, $k$ even, grows linearly with $n$ with the same statement holding in the odd case. Moreover, the percentage of involution conjugacy classes for which $\text{Möb}^{+}(n)$ has length two approaches zero, as $n$ approaches infinity.

Maximal Convergence Groups and Rank One Symmetric Spaces

We show that the group of conformal homeomorphisms of the boundary of a rank one symmetric space (except the hyperbolic plane) of noncompact type acts as a maximal convergence group. Moreover, we show that any family of uniformly quasiconformal homeomorphisms has the convergence property. Our theorems generalize results of Gehring and Martin in the real hyperbolic case for Möbius groups. As a consequence, this shows that the maximal convergence subgroups of the group of self homeomorphisms of the $d$-sphere are not unique up to conjugacy. Finally, we discuss some implications of maximality.

Möbius Transformations of the Circle Form a Maximal Convergence Group

We investigate the relationship between quasisymmetric and convergence groups acting on the circle. We show that the Möbius transformations of the circle form a maximal convergence group. This completes the characterization of the Möbius group as a maximal convergence group acting on the sphere. Previously, Gehring and Martin had shown the maximality of the Möbius group on spheres of dimension greater than one. Maximality of the isometry (conformal) group of the hyperbolic plane as a uniform quasi-isometry group, uniformly quasiconformal group, and as a convergence group in which each element is topologically conjugate to an isometry may be viewed as consequences.

Generalizing the hyperbolic collar lemma

We discuss two generalizations of the collar lemma. The first is the stable neighborhood theorem which says that a (not necessarily simple) closed geodesic in a hyperbolic surface has a \lq\lq stable neighborhood\rq\rq whose width only depends on the length of the geodesic. As an application, we show that there is a lower bound for the length of a closed geodesic having crossing number $k$ on a hyperbolic surface. This lower bound tends to infinity with $k$. Our second generalization is to totally geodesic hypersurfaces of hyperbolic manifolds. Namely, we construct a tubular neighborhood function and show that an embedded closed totally geodesic hypersurface in a hyperbolic manifold has a tubular neighborhood whose width only depends on the area of the hypersurface (and hence not on the geometry of the ambient manifold). The implications of this result for volumes of hyperbolic manifolds is discussed. We also derive a (hyperbolic) quantitative version of the Klein-Maskit combination theorem (in all dimensions) for free products of fuchsian groups. Using this last theorem, we construct examples to illustrate the qualitative sharpness of the tubular neighborhood function.
