Modeling financial time series with $\phi^{4}$ quantum field theory

We use a $\phi^{4}$ quantum field theory with inhomogeneous couplings and explicit symmetry-breaking to model an ensemble of financial time series from the S$\&$P 500 index. The continuum nature of the $\phi^4$ theory avoids the inaccuracies that occur in Ising-based models which require a discretization of the time series. We demonstrate this using the example of the 2008 global financial crisis. The $\phi^{4}$ quantum field theory is expressive enough to reproduce the higher-order statistics such as the market kurtosis, which can serve as an indicator of possible market shocks. Accurate reproduction of high kurtosis is absent in binarized models. Therefore Ising models, despite being widely employed in econophysics, are incapable of fully representing empirical financial data, a limitation not present in the generalization of the $\phi^{4}$ scalar field theory. We then investigate the scaling properties of the $\phi^{4}$ machine learning algorithm and extract exponents which govern the behavior of the learned couplings (or weights and biases in ML language) in relation to the number of stocks in the model. Finally, we use our model to forecast the price changes of the AAPL, MSFT, and NVDA stocks. We conclude by discussing how the $\phi^{4}$ scalar field theory could be used to build investment strategies and the possible intuitions that the QFT operations of dimensional compactification and renormalization can provide for financial modelling.

Randall-Sundrum Black Holes at Colliders

In this paper we calculate the evolution of black holes at colliders in the Randall-Sundrum scenario, taking the effect of accretion from the quark-gluon plasma into account. We calculate the evolution using both the canonical and microcanonical ensemble approaches and compare the results to each other and to the well-known corresponding lifetimes for ADD. We find that for an initial mass of 10TeV the canonical lifetime is of the order of $10^{-25}s$, which is of the same order of magnitude as its ADD counterpart. In the microcanonical approach, like in ADD, the microcanonical deviations from thermality slow down the evaporation of the black hole, but, unlike in ADD, the black hole does not completely evaporate; it tends to a stable final state of 0.16GeV. As far as we are aware this is the first prediction of a stable black hole remnant using semiclassical gravity.

On interactions of higher spin fields with gravity and branes in AdS_5

We construct actions of higher spin fields interacting with gravity on AdS_5 backgrounds such that the Compton scattering amplitudes of the interaction are tree-level unitary. We then consider higher-spin fields in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. There, in the fermionic case, we construct a tree-level unitary action of higher spin fields interacting with branes and linearised gravity. In the bosonic case we show that this is not in general possible. A tree-level unitary action of bosonic higher spins interacting with linearised gravity and branes is only possible in the following cases: The brane is a pure tension brane and/or Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed thereby making bosonic higher spin fields invisible to a brane observer. We finally show that higher spins in Randall-Sundrum II braneworlds can only be produced by (decay into) gravitons at trans-Planckian scales. We end by commenting on the possible relevance of higher-spin unparticles as Dark Matter candidates.
