Cardy limit of the 3d superconformal index

We study the superconformal index $Z(q)$ of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories in Cardy-like limits $β= \log \tfrac{1}{q} \to 0^+$, extending techniques recently developed in the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ context. For theories with vectorlike matter content we find on the first sheet ($q \to 1$) that $Z(q) \sim β^{-\#}$, where the exponent $\#$ is determined by a $multiscale\ decomposition$ of the BPS moduli space appearing in the localization formula for the index. On the second sheet ($q \to e^{2πi})$ we find $Z(q) \sim e^{\#/ β}$, and that the long-standing puzzle of apparent gauge-enhancing saddles is resolved (in the absence of Chern--Simons couplings) via a novel $Lorentzian\ factorization$ formula that establishes complete screening. A key insight is the use of $Poisson\ resummation$, which streamlines the asymptotic analysis, sharpens the link to Kaluza--Klein effective field theory, and provides a dual description of parts of the BPS moduli space in terms of punctured surfaces. The Lorentzian factorization formula also emerges from Poisson resummation, though applied after a contour crossing in moduli space. This, in turn, hints at a correspondence between 3d monopoles and vortices via 2d duality.

Bridging 4D QFTs and 2D VOAs via 3D high-temperature EFTs

The high-temperature limit of the superconformal index, especially on higher sheets, often captures useful universal information about a theory. In 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories with fractional r-charges, there exists a special notion of high-temperature limit on higher sheets that captures data of three-dimensional topological quantum field theories arising from r-twisted circle reduction. These TQFTs are closely tied with the VOA of the 4d SCFT. We study such high-temperature limits. More specifically, we apply Di~Pietro-Komargodski type supersymmetric effective field theory techniques to r-twisted circle reductions of $(A_1,A_{2n})$ Argyres-Douglas theories, leveraging their Maruyoshi-Song Lagrangian with manifest $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry. The result on the second sheet is the Gang-Kim-Stubbs family of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY enhancing rank-$0$ theories with monopole superpotentials, whose boundary supports the Virasoro minimal model VOAs $M(2,2n+3)$. Upon topological twist, they give non-unitary TQFTs controlled by the $M(2,2n+3)$ modular tensor category (MTC). The high-temperature limit on other sheets yields their unitary or non-unitary Galois conjugates. This opens up the prospect of a broader four-supercharge perspective on the celebrated correspondence between 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs and 2d VOAs via interpolating 3d EFTs. Several byproducts follow, including a systematic approach to 3d SUSY enhancement from 4d SUSY enhancement, and a 3d QFT handle on Galois orbits of various MTCs associated with 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs.

Integrable Spherical Brane Model at Large $N$

We study one of the simplest integrable two-dimensional quantum field theories with a boundary: $N$ free non-compact scalars in the bulk, constrained non-linearly on the boundary to lie on an $(N-1)$-sphere of radius $1/\sqrt{g}$. The $N=1$ case reduces to the single-channel Kondo problem, for $N=2$ the model describes dissipative Coulomb charging in quantum dots, and larger $N$ is analogous to higher-spin impurity or multi-channel scenarios. Adding a boundary magnetic field -- a linear boundary coupling to the scalars -- enriches the model's structure while preserving integrability. Lukyanov and Zamolodchikov (2004) conjectured an expansion for the boundary free energy on the infinite half-cylinder in powers of the magnetic field. Using large-$N$ saddle-point techniques, we confirm their conjecture to next-to-leading order in $1/N$. Renormalization of the subleading solution turns out to be highly instructive, and we connect it to the RG running of $g$ studied by Giombi and Khanchandani (2020).

Perturbative Coulomb branches on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$: the global D-term potential

We find the perturbative potential on the 3d $\mathcal{N}\!=\!2$ Coulomb branch arising from a chiral 4d $\mathcal{N}\!=\!1$ gauge theory on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$, zeta-regularizing the D-term couplings generated by the Kaluza-Klein modes. This fills a significant gap in the literature on circle-compactified SUSY gauge theories. Unlike earlier indirect approaches to the circle reduction of chiral theories, our formula provides a global view of the Coulomb branch, necessary for capturing holonomy saddles and for systematic implementation. The zero locus of the potential identifies perturbative SUSY vacua, and we show how data-analysis techniques (such as RANSAC hyperplane detection) numerically extract the structure of the moduli space when this locus is extended. Our formula yields new results even in abelian theories, and offers a new perspective on several earlier observations in the context of the Cardy limit of the superconformal index. In particular, circle reductions (of interest in the SCFT/VOA correspondence) found earlier from limits of the index can now be reproduced on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$. An appendix shows how our 3d $\mathcal{N}\!=\!2$ potential is related to a function arising in the Cardy limit of the index analogously to how the 4d $\mathcal{N}\!=\!2$ prepotential arises in a limit of the Nekrasov partition function.

Graded Unitarity in the SCFT/VOA Correspondence

Vertex algebras that arise from four-dimensional, $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories inherit a collection of novel structural properties from their four-dimensional ancestors. Crucially, when the parent SCFT is unitary, the corresponding vertex algebra is not unitary in the conventional sense. In this paper, we motivate and define a generalized notion of unitarity for vertex algebras that we call \emph{graded unitarity}, and which captures the consequences of four-dimensional unitarity under this correspondence. We also take the first steps towards a classification program for graded-unitary vertex algebras whose underlying vertex algebras are Virasoro or affine Kac--Moody vertex algebras. Remarkably, under certain natural assumptions about the $\mathfrak{R}$-filtration for these vertex algebras, we show that only the $(2,p)$ central charges for Virasoro VOAs and boundary admissible levels for $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ Kac--Moody vertex algebras can possibly be compatible with graded unitarity. These are precisely the cases of these vertex algebras that are known to arise from four dimensions.

3d SUSY enhancement and non-semisimple TQFTs from four dimensions

It has been recently shown that the celebrated SCFT$_4$/VOA$_2$ correspondence can be bridged via three-dimensional field theories arising from a specific R-symmetry twisted circle reduction. We apply this twisted reduction to the $(A_1,A_{n})$ and $(A_1,D_{n})$ families of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ Argyres-Douglas SCFTs using their $\mathcal{N}=1$ Agarwal-Maruyoshi-Song Lagrangians. From $(A_1,A_{2n})$ we derive the Gang-Kim-Stubbs family of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories with SUSY enhancement to $\mathcal{N}=4$ in the infrared, generalizing a recent derivation made in the special cases $n=1,2$. Topological twists of these theories are known to yield $semisimple$ TQFTs supporting $rational$ VOAs on holomorphic boundaries. From $(A_1,A_{2n-1})$, $(A_1,D_{2n+1})$, and $(A_1,D_{2n})$, we obtain three new infinite families of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ abelian gauge theories, all with monopole superpotentials, flowing to $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs without Coulomb branch, but with the same non-trivial Higgs branch as the four-dimensional parent. Their topological A-twist yields $non$-$semisimple$ TQFTs related to $logarithmic$ VOAs such as $\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(2)_{-4/3}$.

High-temperature expansion of the Schur index and modularity

High-temperature ($q\to1$) asymptotics of 4d superconformal indices of Lagrangian theories have been recently analyzed up to exponentially suppressed corrections. Here we use RG-inspired tools to extend the analysis to the exponentially suppressed terms in the context of Schur indices of $N=2$ SCFTs. In particular, our approach explains the curious patterns of logarithms (polynomials in $1/\log q$) found by Dedushenko and Fluder in their numerical study of the high-temperature expansion of rank-$1$ theories. We also demonstrate compatibility of our results with the conjecture of Beem and Rastelli that Schur indices satisfy finite-order, possibly twisted, modular linear differential equations (MLDEs), and discuss the interplay between our approach and the MLDE approach to the high-temperature expansion. The expansions for $q$ near roots of unity are also treated. A byproduct of our analysis is a proof (for Lagrangian theories) of rationality of the conformal dimensions of all characters of the associated VOA, that mix with the Schur index under modular transformations.

Decomposition of BPS Moduli Spaces and Asymptotics of Supersymmetric Partition Functions

We present a prototype for Wilsonian analysis of asymptotics of supersymmetric partition functions of non-abelian gauge theories. Localization allows expressing such partition functions as an integral over a BPS moduli space. When the limit of interest introduces a scale hierarchy in the problem, asymptotics of the partition function is obtained in the Wilsonian approach by $i)$ decomposing (in some suitable scheme) the BPS moduli space into various patches according to the set of light fields (lighter than the scheme dependent cut-off $Λ$) they support, $ii)$ localizing the partition function of the effective field theory on each patch (with cut-offs set by the scheme), and $iii)$ summing up the contributions of all patches to obtain the final asymptotic result (which is scheme-independent and accurate as $Λ\to\infty$). Our prototype concerns the Cardy-like asymptotics of the 4d superconformal index, which has been of interest recently for its application to black hole microstate counting in AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$. As a byproduct of our analysis we obtain the most general asymptotic expression for the index of gauge theories in the Cardy-like limit, encompassing and extending all previous results.

Topologically charged BPS microstates in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

In the standard $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ with $\mathrm{sym}^N(T^4)$, as well as the $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ Datta-Eberhardt-Gaberdiel variant with $\mathrm{sym}^N(T^4/\mathbb{Z}_2)$, supersymmetric index techniques have not been applied so far to the CFT states with target-space momentum or winding. We clarify that the difficulty lies in a central extension of the SUSY algebra in the momentum and winding sectors, analogous to the central extension on the Coulomb branch of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories. We define modified helicity-trace indices tailored to the momentum and winding sectors, and use them for microstate counting of the corresponding bulk black holes. In the $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ case we reproduce the microstate matching of Larsen and Martinec. In the $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ case we resolve a previous mismatch with the Bekenstein-Hawking formula encountered in the topologically trivial sector by going to certain winding sectors.

Modified supersymmetric indices in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

We consider the $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ dualities proposed by Eberhardt, where the bulk geometry is AdS$_3\times(S^3\times T^4)/\mathbb{Z}_k$, and the CFT is a deformation of the symmetric orbifold of the supersymmetric sigma model $T^4/\mathbb{Z}_k$ (with $k=2,\ 3,\ 4,\ 6$). The elliptic genera of the two sides vanish due to fermionic zero modes, so for microstate counting applications one must consider modified supersymmetric indices. In an analysis similar to that of Maldacena, Moore, and Strominger for the standard $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ case of $T^4$, we study the appropriate helicity-trace index of the boundary CFTs. We encounter a strange phenomenon where a saddle-point analysis of our indices reproduces only a fraction (respectively $\frac{1}{2},\ \frac{2}{3},\ \frac{3}{4},\ \frac{5}{6}$) of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the associated macroscopic black branes.

Central charges, elliptic genera, and Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

We consider $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ dualities proposed in the large central charge limit ($c\to\infty$) by Eberhardt. Here we propose the associated D1-D5 systems to be orbifolds of the standard $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ systems, thereby elevating the dualities to the finite-$c$ level on the boundary and to the quantum level in the bulk. In particular, we show that our brane systems yield low-energy sigma models whose subleading central charges match earlier predictions from bulk one-loop supergravity computations. In the case involving the Enriques surface, the finite-$c$ sigma model has a non-trivial elliptic genus which we use to microscopically explain both the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the subleading logarithmic correction to it for the associated macroscopic black brane.

High-temperature asymptotics of supersymmetric partition functions

We study the supersymmetric partition function of 4d supersymmetric gauge theories with a U(1) R-symmetry on Euclidean $S^3\times S_β^1$, with $S^3$ the unit-radius squashed three-sphere, and $β$ the circumference of the circle. For superconformal theories, this partition function coincides (up to a Casimir energy factor) with the 4d superconformal index. The partition function can be computed exactly using supersymmetric localization of the gauge theory path-integral. It takes the form of an elliptic hypergeometric integral, which may be viewed as a matrix-integral over the moduli space of the holonomies of the gauge fields around $S_β^1$. At high temperatures ($β\to 0$, corresponding to the hyperbolic limit of the elliptic hypergeometric integral) we obtain from the matrix-integral a quantum effective potential for the holonomies. The effective potential is proportional to the temperature. Therefore the high-temperature limit further localizes the matrix-integral to the locus of the minima of the potential. If the effective potential is positive semi-definite, the leading high-temperature asymptotics of the partition function is given by the formula of Di Pietro and Komargodski, and the subleading asymptotics is connected to the Coulomb branch dynamics on $R^3\times S^1$. In theories where the effective potential is not positive semi-definite, the Di Pietro-Komargodski formula needs to be modified. In particular, this modification occurs in the SU(2) theory of Intriligator-Seiberg-Shenker, and the SO(N) theory of Brodie-Cho-Intriligator, both believed to exhibit "misleading" anomaly matchings, and both believed to yield interacting superconformal field theories with $c<a$. Two new simple tests for dualities between 4d supersymmetric gauge theories emerge as byproducts of our analysis.

The 4d superconformal index near roots of unity and 3d Chern-Simons theory

We consider the $S^3\times S^1$ superconformal index $\mathcal{I}(τ)$ of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories. The Hamiltonian index is defined in a standard manner as the Witten index with a chemical potential $τ$ coupled to a combination of angular momenta on $S^3$ and the $U(1)$ R-charge. We develop the all-order asymptotic expansion of the index as $q = e^{2 πi τ}$ approaches a root of unity, i.e. as $\widetilde τ\equiv m τ+ n \to 0$, with $m,n$ relatively prime integers. The asymptotic expansion of $\log\mathcal{I}(τ)$ has terms of the form $\widetilde τ^k$, $k = -2, -1, 0, 1$. We determine the coefficients of the $k=-2,-1,1$ terms from the gauge theory data, and provide evidence that the $k=0$ term is determined by the Chern-Simons partition function on $S^3/\mathbb{Z}_m$. We explain these findings from the point of view of the 3d theory obtained by reducing the 4d gauge theory on the $S^1$. The supersymmetric functional integral of the 3d theory takes the form of a matrix integral over the dynamical 3d fields, with an effective action given by supersymmetrized Chern-Simons couplings of background and dynamical gauge fields. The singular terms in the $\widetilde τ\to 0$ expansion (dictating the growth of the 4d index) are governed by the background Chern-Simons couplings. The constant term has a background piece as well as a piece given by the localized functional integral over the dynamical 3d gauge multiplet. The linear term arises from the supersymmetric Casimir energy factor needed to go between the functional integral and the Hamiltonian index.

Asymptotic growth of the 4d $\mathcal N=4$ index and partially deconfined phases

We study the Cardy-like asymptotics of the 4d $\mathcal N=4$ index and demonstrate the existence of partially deconfined phases where the asymptotic growth of the index is not as rapid as in the fully deconfined case. We then take the large-$N$ limit after the Cardy-like limit and make a conjecture for the leading asymptotics of the index. While the Cardy-like behavior is derived using the integral representation of the index, we demonstrate how the same results can be obtained using the Bethe ansatz type approach as well. In doing so, we discover new non-standard solutions to the elliptic Bethe ansatz equations including continuous families of solutions for $SU(N)$ theory with $N\ge3$. We argue that the existence of both standard and continuous non-standard solutions has a natural interpretation in terms of vacua of $\mathcal N=1^*$ theory on $\mathbb R^3\times S^1$.

From Exact Results to Gauge Dynamics on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$

We revisit the vacuum structure of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ Intriligator-Seiberg-Shenker model on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$. Guided by the Cardy-like asymptotics of its Romelsberger index, and building on earlier semi-classical results by Poppitz and Ünsal, we argue that previously overlooked non-perturbative effects generate a Higgs-type potential on the classical Coulomb branch of the low-energy effective 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory. In particular, on part of the Coulomb branch we encounter the first instance of a dynamically-generated quintic monopole superpotential.

Cardy-like asymptotics of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ index and AdS$_5$ blackholes

Choi, Kim, Kim, and Nahmgoong have recently pioneered analyzing a Cardy-like limit of the superconformal index of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ theory with complexified fugacities which encodes the entropy of the dual supersymmetric AdS$_5$ blackholes. Here we study the Cardy-like asymptotics of the index within the rigorous framework of elliptic hypergeometric integrals, thereby filling a gap in their derivation of the blackhole entropy function, finding a new blackhole saddle-point, and demonstrating novel bifurcation phenomena in the asymptotics of the index as a function of fugacity phases. We also comment on the relevance of the supersymmetric Casimir energy to the blackhole entropy function in the present context.

Quantum Corrections to Central Charges and Supersymmetric Casimir Energy in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

We study the Casimir energy of bulk fields in AdS$_3$ and its relation to subleading terms in the central charge of the dual CFT$_2$. Computing both sides of the standard CFT$_2$ relation $E=-c/12$ independently we show that this relation is not necessarily satisfied at the level of individual bulk supergravity states, but in theories with sufficient supersymmetry it is restored at the level of bulk supermultiplets. Assuming only $(0,2)$ supersymmetry (or more), we improve the situation by relating quantum corrections to the central charge and the supersymmetric Casimir energy which in turn is related to an index. These relations adapt recent progress on the AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ correspondence to AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ holography. We test our formula successfully in several examples, including the $(0,4)$ MSW theory describing classes of 4D black holes and the large $(4,4)$ theory that is interesting for higher spin holography. We also make predictions for the subleading central charges in several recently proposed $(2,2)$ dualities where the CFT$_2$ is not yet well-understood.
