Performance Scaling Laws for PD Array-based Receivers in IM/DD Optical Wireless Communication Systems

We study the performance scaling laws for electrical-domain combining in photodetector (PD) array-based receivers employing intensity modulation and direct detection, taking into account the inherent square-law relationship between the optical and electrical received powers. The performance of PD array-based systems is compared, in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and achievable rate, to that of a reference receiver employing a single PD. Analytical and numerical results show that PD arrays provide performance gains for sufficiently narrow beams and above an SNR threshold. Furthermore, increasing the number of PDs alone does not enhance performance, and joint optimization of beam pattern, transverse electromagnetic mode, received power, and PD positions is necessary. Our model and derived insights provide practical guidelines and highlight the trade-offs for the design of next-generation high-bandwidth PD array receivers.

Optical Wireless Communications: Enabling the Next Generation Network of Networks

Optical wireless communication (OWC) is a promising technology anticipated to play a key role in the next-generation network of networks, especially as a complementary technology to traditional radio frequency communications, for enhancing networking capabilities beyond conventional terrestrial networks. OWC is already a mature technology with diverse usage scenarios, and can enable integrated applications via wireless access and backhaul networks, dynamic drone and satellite networks, underwater networks, inter- and intra-system interconnecting networks, and vehicular communication networks. Furthermore, novel and emerging technological opportunities such as photovoltaic cells, orbital angular momentum-based modulation, optical reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, organic light-emitting and photo diodes, and recent advances in ultraviolet communications can help enhance future OWC capabilities even further. Moreover, OWC networks can also support value-added services such as enhanced positioning and gesture recognition. Hence, OWC provides unique functionalities that can play a crucial role in building convergent and resilient future network of networks alongside radio frequency and optical fiber technologies.

100 Gbps Indoor Access and 4.8 Gbps Outdoor Point-to-Point LiFi Transmission Systems using Laser-based Light Sources

In this paper, we demonstrate the communication capabilities of light-fidelity (LiFi) systems based on highbrightness and high-bandwidth integrated laser-based sources in a surface mount device (SMD) packaging platform. The laserbased source is able to deliver 450 lumens of white light illumination and the resultant light brightness is over 1000 cd mm2. It is demonstrated that a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) LiFi system with ten parallel channels is able to deliver over 100 Gbps data rate with the assistance of Volterra filter-based nonlinear equalisers. In addition, an aggregated transmission data rate of 4.8 Gbps has been achieved over a link distance of 500 m with the same type of SMD light source. This work demonstrates the scalability of LiFi systems that employ laserbased light sources, particularly in their capacity to enable highspeed short range, as well as long-range data transmission.

Downlink Massive MU-MIMO with Successively-Regularized Zero Forcing Precoding

In this letter, we consider linear precoding for downlink massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We propose the novel successively-regularized zero forcing (SRZF) precoding, which exploits successive null spaces of the MIMO channels of the users, along with regularization, to control the inter-user interference (IUI) and to enhance performance and robustness to imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS). We study the IUI characteristics of the proposed SRZF precoding for perfect and imperfect CSI at the BS. Furthermore, via computer simulations, we compare the sum rate of SRZF precoding with those of several baseline schemes including conventional and regularized zero forcing (ZF) precoding. Our simulation results reveal that, for massive MIMO systems with inter-user channel correlations, the proposed SRZF precoding significantly outperforms the considered baseline schemes for both perfect and imperfect CSI at the BS.

Downlink MIMO-RSMA with Successive Null-Space Precoding

In this paper, we consider the precoder design for an underloaded or critically loaded downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system. We propose novel precoding and decoding schemes which enhance system performance based on rate splitting at the transmitter and single-stage successive interference cancellation at the receivers. The proposed successive null-space (SNS) precoding utilizes linear combinations of the null-space basis vectors of the successively augmented MIMO channel matrices of the users as precoding vectors to adjust the inter-user-interference experienced by the receivers. We formulate a non-convex weighted sum rate optimization problem for the precoding vectors and the associated power allocation for the proposed SNS-based MIMO-rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) scheme. We obtain a suboptimal solution for this problem via successive convex approximation. Moreover, we study the robustness of the proposed precoding scheme to imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station via derivative-based sensitivity analysis. Our analysis and simulation results reveal the enhanced performance and robustness of the proposed SNS-based MIMO-RSMA scheme over several baseline multi-user MIMO schemes, especially for imperfect CSI.

Precoding and Decoding Schemes for Downlink MIMO-RSMA with Simultaneous Diagonalization and User Exclusion

In this paper, we consider the precoder design for downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) systems. The proposed scheme with simultaneous diagonalization (SD) decomposes the MIMO channel matrices of the users into scalar channels via higher-order generalized singular value decomposition for the common message (CM) and block diagonalization (BD) for the private messages, thereby enabling low-complexity element-by-element successive interference cancellation (SIC) and decoding at the receivers. Furthermore, the proposed SD MIMO-RSMA overcomes a critical limitation in RSMA systems, whereby the achievable rate of the CM is restricted by the users with weak effective MIMO channel for the CM, by excluding a subset of users from decoding the CM. We formulate a non-convex weighted sum rate (WSR) optimization problem for SD MIMO-RSMA and solve it via successive convex approximation to obtain a locally optimal solution. Our simulation results reveal that, for both perfect and imperfect CSI, the proposed SD MIMO-RSMA with user exclusion outperforms baseline MIMO-RSMA schemes and linear BD precoding.

Successive Null-Space Precoder Design for Downlink MU-MIMO with Rate Splitting and Single-Stage SIC

In this paper, we consider the precoder design for an under-loaded or critically loaded downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) communication system. We propose novel precoding and decoding schemes which enhance system performance based on rate splitting at the transmitter and single-stage successive interference cancellation at the receivers. The proposed successive null-space (SNS) precoding scheme utilizes linear combinations of the null-space basis vectors of the successively augmented MIMO channel matrices of the users as precoding vectors to adjust the inter-user-interference experienced by the receivers. We formulate a non-convex weighted sum rate (WSR) optimization problem, and solve it via successive convex approximation to obtain a suboptimal solution for the precoding vectors and the associated power allocation. Our simulation results reveal that the proposed SNS precoders outperform block diagonalization based linear and rate splitting designs, and in many cases, have a relatively small gap to the maximum sum rate achieved by dirty paper coding.

Uplink and Downlink MIMO-NOMA with Simultaneous Triangularization

In this paper, we consider the uplink and downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. We propose novel uplink and downlink precoding and decoding schemes that lower the decoding complexity at the receiver by decomposing the MIMO-NOMA channels of the users into multiple single-input single-output (SISO)-NOMA channels via simultaneous triangularization (ST) of the MIMO channels of the users and a low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the receiver. The proposed ST MIMO-NOMA schemes avoid channel inversion at transmitter and receiver and take advantage of the null spaces of the MIMO channels of the users, which is beneficial for the ergodic achievable rate performance. We characterize the maximum ergodic achievable rate regions of the proposed uplink and downlink ST MIMO-NOMA schemes, and compare them with respective upper bounds, baseline MIMO-NOMA precoding schemes, and orthogonal multiple access (OMA). Our results illustrate that the proposed schemes significantly outperform the considered baseline MIMO-NOMA precoding schemes and OMA, and have a small gap to the respective upper bounds for most channel conditions and user rates. Moreover, we show that a hybrid scheme, which performs time sharing between the proposed uplink and downlink ST MIMO-NOMA and single-user MIMO, can improve performance even further.

Precoder Design and Power Allocation for Downlink MIMO-NOMA via Simultaneous Triangularization

In this paper, we consider the downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. The proposed precoding scheme is based on simultaneous triangularization and decomposes the MIMO-NOMA channels of the two users into multiple single-input single-output NOMA channels, assuming low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the users. In contrast to the precoding schemes based on simultaneous diagonalization (SD), the proposed scheme avoids inverting the MIMO channels of the users, thereby enhancing the ergodic rate performance. Furthermore, we develop a power allocation algorithm based on the convex-concave procedure, and exploit it to obtain the ergodic achievable rate region of the proposed MIMO-NOMA scheme. Our results illustrate that the proposed scheme outperforms baseline precoding schemes based on SD and orthogonal multiple access for a wide range of user rates and performs close to the dirty paper coding upper bound. The ergodic rate region can further be improved by utilizing a hybrid scheme based on time sharing between the proposed MIMO-NOMA scheme and point-to-point MIMO.

Precoder Design and Statistical Power Allocation for MIMO-NOMA via User-Assisted Simultaneous Diagonalization

In this paper, we investigate the downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). We propose a novel user-assisted (UA) simultaneous diagonalization (SD) based MIMO-NOMA scheme that achieves SD of the MIMO channels of both users through a combination of precoder design and low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the users, thereby considerably lowering the overall decoding complexity compared to joint decoding. The achievable ergodic user rates of the proposed scheme are analyzed for Rayleigh fading channels based on a finite-size random matrix theory framework, which is further exploited to develop a statistical power allocation algorithm. Simulation and numerical results show that the proposed UA-SD MIMO-NOMA scheme significantly outperforms orthogonal multiple access and a benchmark precoder design performing SD via generalized singular value decomposition in terms of the achievable ergodic rate region for most user rates. The ergodic rate region is further enhanced by a hybrid scheme which performs time sharing between the proposed UA-SD MIMO-NOMA scheme and single-user MIMO.

In this paper, we present the QR Algorithm with Permutations that shows an improved convergence rate compared to the classical QR algorithm. We determine a bound for performance based on best instantaneous convergence, and develop low complexity methods for computing the permutation matrices at every iteration. We use simulations to verify the improvement, and to compare the performance of proposed algorithms to the classical QR algorithm.

Simulation Performance of MMSE Iterative Equalization with Soft Boolean Value Propagation

The performance of MMSE Iterative Equalization based on MAP-SBVP and COD-MAP algorithms (for generating extrinsic information) are compared for fading and non-fading communication channels employing serial concatenated convolution codes. MAP-SBVP is a convolution decoder using a conventional soft-MAP decoder followed by a soft-convolution encoder using the soft-boolean value propagation (SBVP). From the simulations it is observed that for MMSE Iterative Equalization, MAP-SBVP performance is comparable to COD-MAP for fading and non-fading channels.
