Conforming/Non-Conforming Mixed Finite Element Methods for Optimal Control of Velocity-Vorticity-Pressure Formulation for the Oseen Problem with Variable Viscosity

This work examines the distributed optimal control of generalized Oseen equations with non-constant viscosity. We propose and analyze a new conforming augmented mixed finite element method and a Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for the velocity-vorticity-pressure formulation. The continuous formulation, which incorporates least-squares terms from both the constitutive equation and the incompressibility condition, is well-posed under certain assumptions on the viscosity parameter. The CG method is divergence-conforming and suits any Stokes inf-sup stable velocity-pressure finite element pair, while a generic discrete space approximates vorticity. The DG scheme employs a stabilization technique, and a piecewise constant discretization estimates the control variable. We establish optimal a priori and residual-based a posteriori error estimates for the proposed schemes. Finally, we provide numerical experiments to showcase the method's performance and effectiveness.

Divergence conforming DG method for the optimal control of the Oseen equation with variable viscosity

This study introduces the divergence-conforming discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (DGFEM) for numerically approximating optimal control problems with distributed constraints, specifically those governed by stationary generalized Oseen equations. We provide optimal a priori error estimates in energy norms for such problems using the divergence-conforming DGFEM approach. Moreover, we thoroughly analyze $L^2$ error estimates for scenarios dominated by diffusion and convection. Additionally, we establish the new reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimators for the optimal control of the Oseen equation with variable viscosity. Theoretical findings are validated through numerical experiments conducted in both two and three dimensions.

Interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods for the nearly incompressible elasticity eigenvalue problem with heterogeneous media

This paper studies the family of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods for solving the Herrmann formulation of the linear elasticity eigenvalue problem in heterogeneous media. By employing a weighted Lamé coefficient norm within the framework of non-compact operators theory, we prove convergence of both continuous and discrete eigenvalue problems as the mesh size approaches zero, independently of the Lamé constants. Additionally, we conduct an a posteriori analysis and propose a reliable and efficient estimator. The theoretical findings are supported by numerical experiments.

Finite element analysis of the nearly incompressible linear elasticity eigenvalue problem with variable coefficients

In this paper we present a mathematical and numerical analysis of an eigenvalue problem associated to the elasticity-Stokes equations stated in two and three dimensions. Both problems are related through the Herrmann pressure. Employing the Babu\v ska--Brezzi theory, it is proved that the resulting continuous and discrete variational formulations are well-posed. In particular, the finite element method is based on general inf-sup stables pairs for the Stokes system, such that, Taylor--Hood finite elements. By using a general approximation theory for compact operators, we obtain optimal order error estimates for the eigenfunctions and a double order for the eigenvalues. Under mild assumptions, we have that these estimates hold with constants independent of the Lamé coefficient $λ$. In addition, we carry out the reliability and efficiency analysis of a residual-based a posteriori error estimator for the spectral problem. We report a series of numerical tests in order to assess the performance of the method and its behavior when the nearly incompressible case of elasticity is considered.

Finite element approximation for the delayed generalized Burgers-Huxley equation with weakly singular kernel: Part II Non-Conforming and DG approximation

In this paper, the numerical approximation of the generalized Burgers'-Huxley equation (GBHE) with weakly singular kernels using non-conforming methods will be presented. Specifically, we discuss two new formulations. The first formulation is based on the non-conforming finite element method (NCFEM). The other formulation is based on discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods (DGFEM). The wellposedness results for both formulations are proved. Then, a priori error estimates for both the semi-discrete and fully-discrete schemes are derived. Specific numerical examples, including some applications for the GBHE with weakly singular model, are discussed to validate the theoretical results.

Finite element approximation for a delayed generalized Burgers-Huxley equation with weakly singular kernels: Part I Well-posedness, Regularity and Conforming approximation

The analysis of a delayed generalized Burgers-Huxley equation (a non-linear advection-diffusion-reaction problem) with weakly singular kernels is carried out in this work. Moreover, numerical approximations are performed using the conforming finite element method (CFEM). The existence, uniqueness and regularity results for the continuous problem have been discussed in detail using the Faedo-Galerkin approximation technique. For the numerical studies, we first propose a semi-discrete conforming finite element scheme for space discretization and discuss its error estimates under minimal regularity assumptions. We then employ a backward Euler discretization in time and CFEM in space to obtain a fully-discrete approximation. Additionally, we derive a prior error estimates for the fully-discrete approximated solution. Finally, we present computational results that support the derived theoretical results.

Robust a posteriori error analysis for rotation-based formulations of the elasticity/poroelasticity coupling

We develop the \textit{a posteriori} error analysis of three mixed finite element formulations for rotation-based equations in elasticity, poroelasticity, and interfacial elasticity-poroelasticity. The discretisations use $H^1$-conforming finite elements of degree $k+1$ for displacement and fluid pressure, and discontinuous piecewise polynomials of degree $k$ for rotation vector, total pressure, and elastic pressure. Residual-based estimators are constructed, and upper and lower bounds (up to data oscillations) for all global estimators are rigorously derived. The methods are all robust with respect to the model parameters (in particular, the Lamé constants), they are valid in 2D and 3D, and also for arbitrary polynomial degree $k\geq 0$. The error behaviour predicted by the theoretical analysis is then demonstrated numerically on a set of computational examples including different geometries on which we perform adaptive mesh refinement guided by the \textit{a posteriori} error estimators.

Divergence-conforming methods for transient doubly-diffusive flows: A priori and a posteriori error analysis

The analysis of the double-diffusion model and $\mathbf{H}(\mathrm{div})$-conforming method introduced in [Bürger, Méndez, Ruiz-Baier, SINUM (2019), 57:1318--1343] is extended to the time-dependent case. In addition, the efficiency and reliability analysis of residual-based {\it a posteriori} error estimators for the steady, semi-discrete, and fully discrete problems is established. The resulting methods are applied to simulate the sedimentation of small particles in salinity-driven flows. The method consists of Brezzi-Douglas-Marini approximations for velocity and compatible piecewise discontinuous pressures, whereas Lagrangian elements are used for concentration and salinity distribution. Numerical tests confirm the properties of the proposed family of schemes and of the adaptive strategy guided by the {\it a posteriori} error indicators.

Conforming, nonconforming and DG methods for the stationary generalized Burgers- Huxley equation

In this work we address the analysis of the stationary generalized Burgers-Huxley equation (a nonlinear elliptic problem with anomalous advection) and propose conforming, nonconforming and discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for its numerical approximation. The existence, uniqueness and regularity of weak solutions is discussed in detail using a Faedo-Galerkin approach and fixed-point theory, and a priori error estimates for all three types of numerical schemes are rigorously derived. A set of computational results are presented to show the efficacy of the proposed methods.

Parameter-robust Stochastic Galerkin mixed approximation for linear poroelasticity with uncertain inputs

Linear poroelasticity models have a number of important applications in biology and geophysics. In particular, Biot's consolidation model is a well-known model that describes the coupled interaction between the linear response of a porous elastic medium and a diffusive fluid flow within it, assuming small deformations. Although deterministic linear poroelasticity models and finite element methods for solving them numerically have been well studied, there is little work to date on robust algorithms for solving poroelasticity models with uncertain inputs and for performing uncertainty quantification (UQ). The Biot model has a number of important physical parameters and inputs whose precise values are often uncertain in real world scenarios. In this work, we introduce and analyse the well-posedness of a new five-field model with uncertain and spatially varying Young's modulus and hydraulic conductivity field. By working with a properly weighted norm, we establish that the weak solution is stable with respect to variations in key physical parameters, including the Poisson ratio. We then introduce a novel locking-free stochastic Galerkin mixed finite element method that is robust in the incompressible limit. Armed with the `right' norm, we construct a parameter-robust preconditioner for the associated discrete systems. Our new method facilitates forward UQ, allowing efficient calculation of statistical quantities of interest and is provably robust with respect to variations in the Poisson ratio, the Biot--Willis constant and the storage coefficient, as well as the discretization parameters.

Robust a posteriori error estimation for stochastic Galerkin formulations of parameter-dependent linear elasticity equations

The focus of this work is a posteriori error estimation for stochastic Galerkin approximations of parameter-dependent linear elasticity equations. The starting point is a three-field PDE model in which the Young's modulus is an affine function of a countable set of parameters. We analyse the weak formulation, its stability with respect to a weighted norm and discuss approximation using stochastic Galerkin mixed finite element methods (SG-MFEMs). We introduce a novel a posteriori error estimation scheme and establish upper and lower bounds for the SG-MFEM error. The constants in the bounds are independent of the Poisson ratio as well as the SG-MFEM discretisation parameters. In addition, we discuss proxies for the error reduction associated with certain enrichments of the SG-MFEM spaces and we use these to develop an adaptive algorithm that terminates when the estimated error falls below a user-prescribed tolerance. We prove that both the a posteriori error estimate and the error reduction proxies are reliable and efficient in the incompressible limit case. Numerical results are presented to validate the theory. All experiments were performed using open source (IFISS) software that is available online.

Robust preconditioning for stochastic Galerkin formulations of parameter-dependent nearly incompressible linear elasticity equations

We consider the nearly incompressible linear elasticity problem with an uncertain spatially varying Young's modulus. The uncertainty is modelled with a finite set of parameters with prescribed probability distribution. We introduce a novel three-field mixed variational formulation of the PDE model and discuss its approximation by stochastic Galerkin mixed finite element techniques. First, we establish the well posedness of the proposed variational formulation and the associated finite-dimensional approximation. Second, we focus on the efficient solution of the associated large and indefinite linear system of equations. A new preconditioner is introduced for use with the minimal residual method (MINRES). Eigenvalue bounds for the preconditioned system are established and shown to be independent of the discretisation parameters and the Poisson ratio. The S-IFISS software used for computation is available online.

Robust a posteriori error estimators for mixed approximation of nearly incompressible elasticity

This paper is concerned with the analysis and implementation of robust finite element approximation methods for mixed formulations of linear elasticity problems where the elastic solid is almost incompressible. Several novel a posteriori error estimators for the energy norm of the finite element error are proposed and analysed. We establish upper and lower bounds for the energy error in terms of the proposed error estimators and prove that the constants in the bounds are independent of the Lamé coefficients: thus the proposed estimators are robust in the incompressible limit. Numerical results are presented that validate the theoretical estimates. The software used to generate these results is available online.

Divergence-conforming discontinuous Galerkin finite elements for Stokes eigenvalue problems

In this paper, we present a divergence-conforming discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for Stokes eigenvalue problems. We prove a priori error estimates for the eigenvalue and eigenfunction errors and present a robust residual based a posteriori error estimator. The a posteriori error estimator is proven to be reliable and (locally) efficient in a mesh-dependent velocity-pressure norm. We finally present some numerical examples that verify the a priori convergence rates and the reliability and efficiency of the residual based a posteriori error estimator.

Robust error estimation for lowest-order approximation of nearly incompressible elasticity

We consider so-called Herrmann and Hydrostatic mixed formulations of classical linear elasticity and analyse the error associated with locally stabilised $P_1-P_0$ finite element approximation. First, we prove a stability estimate for the discrete problem and establish an a priori estimate for the associated energy error. Second, we consider a residual-based a posteriori error estimator as well as a local Poisson problem estimator. We establish bounds for the energy error that are independent of the Lamé coefficients and prove that the estimators are robust in the incompressible limit. A key issue to be addressed is the requirement for pressure stabilisation. Numerical results are presented that validate the theory. The software used is available online.

Arnold-Winther mixed finite elements for Stokes eigenvalue problems

This paper is devoted to study the Arnold-Winther mixed finite element method for two dimensional Stokes eigenvalue problems using the stress-velocity formulation. A priori error estimates for the eigenvalue and eigenfunction errors are presented. To improve the approximation for both eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, we propose a local post-processing. With the help of the local post-processing, we derive a reliable a posteriori error estimator which is shown to be empirically efficient. We confirm numerically the proven higher order convergence of the post-processed eigenvalues for convex domains with smooth eigenfunctions. On adaptively refined meshes we obtain numerically optimal higher orders of convergence of the post-processed eigenvalues even on nonconvex domains.

Least-squares spectral element preconditioners for fourth order elliptic problems

The goal of this paper is to propose preconditioners for the system of linear equations that arises from a discretization of fourth order elliptic problems using spectral element methods. These preconditioners are constructed using separation of variables and can be diagonalized and hence easy to invert. For second order elliptic problems this technique has proven to be very successful and performs better than other preconditioners. We show that these preconditioners are spectrally equivalent to the quadratic forms by which we approximate them. Numerical result for the biharmonic problem are presented to validate the theoretical estimates.
