A solution to the hierarchy problem from an almost decoupled hidden sector within a classically scale invariant theory

If scale invariance is a classical symmetry then both the Planck scale and the weak scale should emerge as quantum effects. We show that this can be realized in simple scale invariant theories with a hidden sector. The weak/Planck scale hierarchy emerges in the (technically natural) limit where the hidden sector decouples from the ordinary sector. The weak scale is protected from quadratic divergences because of classical scale invariance, so there is no hierarchy problem.

Noncommutative corrections to classical black holes

We calculate leading long-distance noncommutative corrections to the classical Schwarzschild black hole which is sourced by a massive noncommutative scalar field. The energy-momentum tensor is taken up to ${\cal O}(\ell^4)$ in noncommutative parameter, and is treated in semiclassical (tree level) approximation. These noncommutative corrections can dominate classical post-post-Newtonian corrections providing $\ell > 1/M_P$, however, they are still too small to be observable in present-day experiments.

Neutrino mass in radiatively-broken scale-invariant models

Scale invariance may be a classical symmetry which is broken radiatively. This provides a simple way to stabilize the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking against radiative corrections. The simplest phenomenologically successful model of this type involves the addition of one real scalar field to the standard model. In this minimal model the electroweak Higgs can be interpreted as the pseudo-Goldstone boson of broken scale invariance. We study the possible origin of neutrino mass in such models, both at tree-level and radiatively.

Aharonov-Bohm interactions of a vector unparticle

Recently Georgi argued that hypothetical conformally invariant hidden sector weakly interacting with ordinary particles will have unusual manifestations at low energies in terms of effective degrees of freedom called unparticles. In this note we consider Aharonov-Bohm type of interactions due to the vector unparticle coupled to elementary fermions. We have found that quantum mechanical phase shift is path-dependent.

Electroweak Higgs as a pseudo-Goldstone boson of broken scale invariance

We point out that it is possible to associate the electroweak Higgs boson with the pseudo-Goldstone boson of broken scale invariance, thus resolving the hierarchy problem in a technically natural way. We illustrate this idea with two specific gauge models. Besides being consistent with all currently available experimental data, both models maintain the predictive power of the standard model, since the first model has only one additional parameter beyond the standard model, and the second has the same number of free parameters as the standard model.

Particle interference as a test of Lorentz-violating electrodynamics

In Lorentz-violating electrodynamics a steady current (and similarly a static charge) generates both static magnetic and electric fields. These induced fields, acting on interfering particles, change the interference pattern. We find that particle interference experiments are sensitive to small Lorentz violating effects, and thus they can be used to improve current bounds on some Lorentz-violating parameters.

Theta-twisted Gravity

We describe a theory of gravitation on canonical noncommutative spacetimes. The construction is based on theta-twisted General Coordinate Transformations and Local Lorentz Invariance.

Second Order Noncommutative Corrections to Gravity

In this work, we calculate the leading order corrections to general relativity formulated on a canonical noncommutative spacetime. These corrections appear in the second order of the expansion in theta. First order corrections can only appear in the gravity-matter interactions. Some implications are briefly discussed.

Noncommutative General Relativity

We define a theory of noncommutative general relativity for canonical noncommutative spaces. We find a subclass of general coordinate transformations acting on canonical noncommutative spacetimes to be volume-preserving transformations. Local Lorentz invariance is treated as a gauge theory with the spin connection field taken in the so(3,1) enveloping algebra. The resulting theory appears to be a noncommutative extension of the unimodular theory of gravitation. We compute the leading order noncommutative correction to the action and derive the noncommutative correction to the equations of motion of the weak gravitation field.

Spontaneous reduction of noncommutative gauge symmetry and model building

We propose a mechanism for the spontaneous (gauge-invariant) reduction of noncommutative ${\cal U}(n)$ gauge theories down to SU(n). This can be achieved through the condensation of composite ${\cal U}(n)$ gauge invariant fields that involves half-infinite Wilson lines in trace-U(1) noninvariant and SU(n) preserving direction. Based on this mechanism we discuss anomaly-free fully gauge invariant noncommutative Standard Model based on the minimal gauge group ${\cal U}(3)\times {\cal U}(2)\times {\cal U}(1)$, previously proposed, and show how it can be consistently reduced to the Standard Model with the usual particle spectrum. Charge quantization for quarks and leptons naturally follows from the model.

Birth of the Universe from the Landscape of String Theory

We show that a unique, most probable and stable solution for the wavefunction of the universe, with a very small cosmological constant $Λ_1 \simeq (\fracπ{l_p N})^2$, can be predicted from the supersymmetric minisuperspace with $N$ vacua, of the landscape of string theory without reffering to the antropic principle. Due to the nearest neighbor tunneling in moduli space lattice, the $N$-fold degeneracy of vacua is lifted and a discrete spectrum of bound state levels over the whole minisuperspace emerges. $SUSY$ is spontaneously broken by these bound states, with discrete nonzero energy levels $Λ_s \simeq (\frac{s π}{l_p N})^2$, $s = 1,2,..$.

Deformed N=1 supersymmetry

We consider a deformation of N=1 four dimensional Minkowski superspace where odd coordinates $θ^α$ do not anticommute. We define supersymmetric and associative star product and show how the remaining (anti)commutation relations among the superspace coordinates are modified. In particular, the even coordinates do not commute as well. We also study chiral and vector superfields and their interactions. Suprisingly we find that ordinary undeformed N=1 supersymmetric field theories are compatible with the deformed supersymmetry considered.

Kaluza-Klein decomposition and gauge coupling unification in orbifold GUTs

We discuss Kaluza-Klein (KK) decomposition in 5-dimensional (5D) field theories with orbifold compactification. Kinetic terms localized at orbifold fixed points, which are inevitably present in any realistic model, modify the standard KK mass spectrum and interactions of KK modes. This, in turn, can significantly affect phenomenology of the orbifold models. As an example, we discuss gauge coupling unification in N=1 supersymmetric 5D orbifold SU(5) model. We have found that uncertainties in the predictions of the model related to modification of the KK masses are large and essentially uncontrollable.

Proton stability in 5D GUTs with orbifold compactification

We construct SU(5) SUSY GUT in 5D compactified on S^1/Z_2 orbifold where the matter fields are living in the five dimensional bulk. SU(5) symmetry is broken down to the Standard Model gauge group by the orbifold projection which automatically ensures stability of proton in all orders of perturbation theory. The model predicts extra mirror quark-lepton families which along with the GUT particles and the excitations of extra dimensions could be observable at high energy colliders providing the unification scale is in the TeV range.

Ghost Tachyon Condensation, Brane-like States and Extra Time Dimension

NSR superstring theory contains a tower of physical vertex operators (brane-like states) which exist at non-zero pictures only, i.e. are essentially mixed with superconformal ghosts. Some of these states are massless, they are responsible for creating D-branes. Other states are tachyonic (called ghost tachyons) creating a problem for the vacuum stability of the NSR model. In this paper we explore the role played by these tachyonic states in string dynamics. We show that the ghost tachyons condense on D-branes, created by massless brane-like states. Thus the vacuum stability is achieved dynamically, as the effective ghost tachyon potential exactly cancels the D-brane tension, in full analogy with Sen's mechanism. As a result, from perturbative NSR model point of view, massless and tachyonic brane-like states appear to live in a parallel world, as the brane is screened by the tachyonic veil. We extend the analysis to the brane-antibrane pair in AdS space and show that in this case due to the effect of the ghost tachyon condensation one can construct extra time-dimensional phenomenological models without tachyons and antibranes.

TeV scale unification in four dimensions versus extra dimensions

The gauge coupling constant unification at the low ($O$(TeV)) scale can be obtained just in four dimensions, without help of the power like renormalization group evolution in extra dimensions, due to the presence of some extra particle states at intermediate scales. We show explicit examples of such extra states in the range of 100 GeV -- 1 TeV which can be easily observed on future colliders and can have important impact on the particle phenomenology. The problems of the low scale grand unification and proton stability are also discussed.
