Primordial Black Holes: A Review of Formation and Evolution

Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) have emerged as a leading non-particulate candidate for dark matter and a unique cosmological probe, a paradigm shift accelerated by the detection of anomalous binary mergers by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) collaboration. While the literature is rich with phenomenological constraints, the fundamental quantum and relativistic underpinnings governing PBH genesis and evolution often receive comparatively less emphasis. This review aims to bridge that gap by systematically detailing the physics of PBH formation and their subsequent evolutionary trajectory. We critically examine the hydrodynamic complexity of the early universe, establishing the relativistic thresholds for collapse, the non-linear \emph{race against sound} in the primordial plasma, and the rigorous mathematical utility of the compaction function. Furthermore, by incorporating the dynamic nature of FLRW backgrounds, higher curvature corrections, and quantum backreaction via the memory burden effect, we challenge the standard hawking evaporation and show that extreme-curvature environments halt evaporation entirely, leaving Planck-scale relics that evade current extragalactic bounds. Finally, we map the multimessenger observational landscape, highlighting how the imminent search for sub-solar mass inspirals by next-generation gravitational wave observatories such as the Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer could yield smoking-gun evidence for the PBH paradigm, ultimately transforming these primordial relics into unparalleled laboratories for high-energy physics.

Quantizable Ghost-ridden theories using Kinetic Positivity Constraints

We present a novel way to constrain the ghost field with respect to other physical fields present in a given theory such that the theory becomes quantizable. This is achieved by imposing positivity of the total kinetic energy of the system and performing Lorentz transformations in the field space manifold to arrive at an effective Lagrangian containing only physical degrees of freedom. Since models containing ghost fields such as quintom models are relevant in the cosmological context, this method can help ensure that such theories don't violate unitarity and can be treated as realistic candidates without the need to completely eliminate ghost(s).

Testing the Starobinsky model of inflation with resonant cavities

We show that the Starobinsky inflation model based on $R^2$ gravity has a special feature that it provides a unique scalaron-two-graviton vertex with a coupling proportional to $1/M_P$. In this model stochastic gravitational waves are produced when the scalaron - which is the massive scalar mode of the metric - decays into gravitons during reheating. This decay is accompanied by decay of scalaron into matter as well through a similar coupling, providing an efficient reheating. The stochastic gravitational waves thus produced have characteristic strain $h_c\sim 10^{-35}-10^{-34}$ in the frequency range $10^{6}-10^{12}\, {\rm Hz}$ which makes them accessible to resonant cavity searches for graviton to photon conversions. The detection of these high frequency gravitational waves would be a significant step in experimentally testing the Starobinsky inflation model.

Phantom Menace in general Palatini $f(R,ϕ)$ theories

We study general $f(R,ϕ)$ theories in Palatini formalism and attempt to constrain the behavior of ones that could support both inflationary and late-time expansion era in a unified model. In particular, we find conditions for which the theories remain consistent in weak gravity regimes as well as cosmic expansion eras in both early and late universe. Assuming that the curvature part of the $f(R,ϕ)$ behaves as Starobinsky gravity, we assess post-inflation dynamical stability of the theory in Einstein frame and proceed to isolate two distinct fixed points that provide a stable late-time accelerating universe. Comparison with DESI, Cosmic Chronometers, and SNeIa datasets adds more stringent constraints to the behavior of the theory near the present epoch, giving us one stable fixed point where expansion is driven by a phantom scalar field. However, time scales of the two fixed points suggest that this fixed point may be transient and may eventually evolve toward a stable expansion stage driven potential domination in the distant future of the universe.

Eff-ACT-ive Starobinsky pre-inflation

We consider quantum corrections to a recently obtained perturbative form of Starobinsky model to extract information about the initial conditions of the universe leading to cosmological inflation. Integrating out graviton modes, we find higher-derivative instabilities that are shown to decay into scalarons, causing an effective kinetic-domination stage which is shown to lead naturally to inflation without the need for fine-tuning of initial inflaton amplitude. We find a perturbative upper bound on scalaron magnitude that matches Planck constraints on inflaton energy density near the pivot scale. This modified history also affects observables and resolves other anomalies such as the low-$\ell$ power deficit in the TT spectrum as well as the disfavorment of Starobinsky model based on updated predictions of scalar spectral index accounting for data from Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT).

Observable Primordial Gravitational Waves from Non-minimally Coupled $R^2$ Palatini Modified Gravity

We probe the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves (GWs) produced during the eras of hyperkination, kination, and reheating in a non-minimally coupled, $\mathcal{L} \propto (1+ ξχ/M_{\text{Pl}})^t (R+αR^2)$, modified gravity using the Palatini formulation. We consider a runaway potential, which gives an era of kinetic domination after the end of inflation. The coupling order $t$ is varied to examine a large class of theories up to $χ^2 R^2$. For models with $t>0$, reheating is not achieved naturally; hence, we supplement such theories with a reheating mechanism based on the interaction of inflaton and radiation produced at the end of inflation due to cosmological expansion. We demonstrate that the energy density of the GWs is enhanced as a function of the coupling during kination for all considered theories, and a short-lived phase of hyperkination truncates the boost and avoids the over-production of GWs. Hyperkination, and thus the $R^2$ term, should be deemed necessary in all theories with a runaway potential as it prevents the GW enhancement during kination from destabilizing the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. The spectrum remains flat for the period of hyperkination and reheating. We examine the available parameter space for which the theories remain valid and place bounds on the Hubble parameter ($H$) and radiation energy density ($Ω_r^{\text{end}}$) at the end of inflation. We find that as we decrease the order of the coupling, the spectra shift towards a more observable regime of future GW experiments. The observation of the plateau during reheating will constrain the $H$ and $Ω_r^{\text{end}}$ values, while the spectral shape of the boost obtained during kination will confirm the nature of the theory. The bounds from hyperkination lie in the kHz-GHz frequency range.

Local momentum space: Scalar field and gravity

We use the local momentum space technique to obtain an expansion of the Feynman propagators for scalar field and graviton up to first order in the background curvature. The expressions for the propagators are cross-checked with the past literature as well as with the expressions for the traced heat kernel coefficients. The propagators so obtained are used to compute one-loop divergences in the Vilkovisky-Dewitt's effective action for a scalar field non-minimally coupled with gravity for an arbitrary spacetime metric background. The Vilkovisky-DeWitt effective action is then compared with the standard effective action in the limit $κ=0$, where $κ= 2/M_P$ in terms of the Planck mass. The comparison yields the important result that taking the limit $κ=0$ after computing the Vikovisky-DeWitt effective action is not equivalent to computing the Vikovisky-DeWitt effective action for the same theory in the absence of gravity.

Self-healing unitarity is an optical illusion

Among the vast variety of proposals put forward by the community to resolve tree-level unitarity violations in Higgs inflation models, there exists the concept of self-healing. It heals the theory from supposed tree-level violations for elastic scattering processes by summing over successive vacuum polarization loop corrections. In this work, we examine this technique to check whether unitarity is indeed restored and find that there exist underlying constraints in self-healing unitarity that pose the same perturbative unitarity bounds that it was expected to heal.

Ghost Free Theory in Unitary Gauge: A New Candidate

We propose an algebraic analysis using a 3+1 decomposition to identify conditions for a clever cancellation of the higher derivatives, which plagued the theory with Ostrogradsky ghosts, by exploiting some existing degeneracy in the Lagrangian. We obtain these conditions as linear equations (in terms of coefficients of the higher derivative terms) and demand that they vanish, such that the existence of nontrivial solutions implies that the theory is degenerate. We find that, for the theory under consideration, no such solutions exist for a general inhomogeneous scalar field, but that the theory is degenerate in the unitary gauge. We, then, find modified FLRW equations and narrow down conditions for which there could exist a de Sitter inflationary epoch. We further find constraints on the coefficients of the remaining higher-derivative interaction terms, based on power-counting renormalizability and tree-level unitarity up to the Planck scale.

Ultraviolet Unitarity Violations in Non-minimally Coupled Scalar-Starobinsky Inflation

We perform the calculation for tree-level ultraviolet unitarity violation scales for scalar-$R^2$ inflation models by including an additional $R^2 |Φ|^2$-type term. Due to certain constraints, we resort to the Einstein frame for our calculations, where we separate our analysis between metric and Palatini formulations. We follow recent works in this line that debunk the naive predictions for unitarity violations in Higgs' inflation models to determine how to accurately estimate the behaviour of scattering amplitudes in the UV limit. Later, we work out different cases by assuming potentials corresponding to known inflation scenarios so we could predict the range of coupling parameters for which the theories would remain unitary up to the Planckian regime. We also try to find the behaviour of the scattering amplitudes for these theories during the transition from inflationary to reheating epoch.

Covariant Effective Action for Generalized Proca Theories

We investigate quantum stability of the generalised Proca theories in curved spacetime treating gravity as a dynamical field. To compute the quantum gravitational corrections we evaluate divergent part of the effective action at one loop level. We employ Vilkovisky-DeWitt formalism for this task which gives us a gauge invariant and gauge condition independent effective action. It is shown that the quantum corrections are suppressed by a UV cutoff parametrically higher than the Proca mass if the coupling constants are restricted to lie in a certain range. Furthermore it is shown that the quantum corrections remain suppressed even at scales where classical non-linearities dominate over kinetic terms allowing Vainshtein mechanism to work.

Covariant Effective Action for Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity

We develop the calculation of the divergent part of one-loop covariant effective action for scalar fields minimally and non-minimally coupled to gravity using the generalized Schwinger-DeWitt technique. We derive the field-space metric using Vilkovisky's prescription and obtain new terms in the one-loop corrections which are absent in past literature with trivial choices of field-space metric. We further calculate the covariant versions of past results, obtained using the standard approach, by applying Barvinsky and Vilkovisky's extension to the ordinary Schwinger-DeWitt approach. For completeness, we study the one-loop gravitational corrections for a dilaton-extended two-field Starobinsky model and compare with known results.
