Phase separation of a model binary polymer solution in an external field

The phase separation of a simple binary mixture of incompatible linear polymers in solution is investigated using an extension of the sedimentation equilibrium method, whereby the osmotic pressure of the mixture is extracted from the density profiles of the inhomogeneous mixture in a gravitational field. In Monte-Carlo simulations the field can be tuned to induce significant inhomogeneity, while keeping the density profiles sufficiently smooth for the macroscopic condition of hydrostatic equilibrium to remain applicable. The method is applied here for a simplified model of ideal, but mutually avoiding polymers, which readily phase separate at relatively low densities. The Monte-Carlo data are interpreted with the help of an approximate bulk phase diagram calculated from a simple, second order virial coefficient theory. By deriving effective potentials between polymer centres of mass, the binary mixture of polymers is coarse-grained to a ``soft colloid'' picture reminiscent of the Widom-Rowlinson model for incompatible atomic mixtures. This approach significantly speeds up the simulations, and accurately reproduces the behaviour of the full monomer resolved model.

Inhibition of protein crystallization by evolutionary negative design

In this perspective we address the question: why are proteins seemingly so hard to crystallize? We suggest that this is because of evolutionary negative design, i.e. proteins have evolved not to crystallize, because crystallization, as with any type of protein aggregation, compromises the viability of the cell. There is much evidence in the literature that supports this hypothesis, including the effect of mutations on the crystallizability of a protein, the correlations found in the properties of crystal contacts in bioinformatics databases, and the positive use of protein crystallization by bacteria and viruses.

Colloid-polymer mixtures in the protein limit

We computed the phase-separation behavior and effective interactions of colloid-polymer mixtures in the "protein limit", where the polymer radius of gyration is much larger than the colloid radius. For ideal polymers, the critical colloidal packing fraction tends to zero, whereas for interacting polymers in a good solvent the behavior is governed by a universal binodal, implying a constant critical colloid packing fraction. In both systems the depletion interaction is not well described by effective pair potentials but requires the incorporation of many-body contributions.

Atomic Tunneling from a STM/AFM tip: Dissipative Quantum Effects from Phonons

We study the effects of phonons on the tunneling of an atom between two surfaces. In contrast to an atom tunneling in the bulk, the phonons couple very strongly, and qualitatively change the tunneling behavior. This is the first example of {\it ohmic} coupling from phonons for a two-state system. We propose an experiment in which an atom tunnels from the tip of an STM, and show how its behavior would be similar to the Macroscopic Quantum Coherence behavior predicted for SQUIDS. The ability to tune and calculate many parameters would lead to detailed tests of the standard theories. (For a general intro to this work on the on the World-Wide-Web: http://www.lassp.cornell.edu.
