Mukai models of Fano varieties

We give a self-contained and simplified proof of Mukai's classification of prime Fano threefolds of index 1 and genus $g \ge 6$ with at most Gorenstein factorial terminal singularities, and of its extension to higher-dimension.

Mukai bundles on Fano threefolds

We give a proof of Mukai's Theorem on the existence of certain exceptional vector bundles on prime Fano threefolds. To our knowledge this is the first complete proof in the literature. The result is essential for Mukai's biregular classification of prime Fano threefolds, and for the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions in their derived categories. Our approach is based on Lazarsfeld's construction that produces vector bundles on a variety from globally generated line bundles on a divisor, on Mukai's theory of stable vector bundles on K3 surfaces, and on Brill--Noether properties of curves and (in the sense of Mukai) of K3 surfaces.

Brill-Noether theory of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces

We show that Brill--Noether loci in Hilbert scheme of points on a smooth connected surface $S$ are non-empty whenever their expected dimension is positive, and that they are irreducible and have expected dimensions. More precisely, we consider the loci of pairs $(I, s)$ where $I$ is an ideal that locally at the point $s$ of $S$ needs a given number of generators. We give two proofs. The first uses Iarrobino's descriptionof the Hilbert--Samuel stratification of local punctual Hilbert schemes, and the second is based on induction via birational relationships between different Brill--Noether loci given by nested Hilbert schemes.

Kuznetsov's Fano threefold conjecture via K3 categories and enhanced group actions

We settle the last open case of Kuznetsov's conjecture on the derived categories of Fano threefolds. Contrary to the original conjecture, we prove the Kuznetsov components of quartic double solids and Gushel-Mukai threefolds are never equivalent, as recently shown independently by Zhang. On the other hand, we prove the modified conjecture asserting their deformation equivalence. Our proof of nonequivalence combines a categorical Enriques-K3 correspondence with the Hodge theory of categories. Along the way, we obtain a categorical description of the periods of Gushel-Mukai varieties, which we use to resolve a conjecture of Kuznetsov and the second author on the birational categorical Torelli problem, as well as to give a simple proof of a theorem of Debarre and Kuznetsov on the fibers of the period map. Our proof of deformation equivalence relies on results of independent interest about obstructions to enhancing group actions on categories.

The desingularization of the theta divisor of a cubic threefold as a moduli space

We show that the moduli space $\overline{M}_X(v)$ of Gieseker stable sheaves on a smooth cubic threefold $X$ with Chern character $v = (3,-H,-H^2/2,H^3/6)$ is smooth and of dimension four. Moreover, the Abel-Jacobi map to the intermediate Jacobian of $X$ maps it birationally onto the theta divisor $Θ$, contracting only a copy of $X \subset \overline{M}_X(v)$ to the singular point $0 \in Θ$. We use this result to give a new proof of a categorical version of the Torelli theorem for cubic threefolds, which says that $X$ can be recovered from its Kuznetsov component $\operatorname{Ku}(X) \subset \mathrm{D}^{\mathrm{b}}(X)$. Similarly, this leads to a new proof of the description of the singularity of the theta divisor, and thus of the classical Torelli theorem for cubic threefolds, i.e., that $X$ can be recovered from its intermediate Jacobian.

Stability conditions in families

We develop a theory of Bridgeland stability conditions and moduli spaces of semistable objects for a family of varieties. Our approach is based on and generalizes previous work by Abramovich-Polishchuk, Kuznetsov, Lieblich, and Piyaratne-Toda. Our notion includes openness of stability, semistable reduction, a support property uniformly across the family, and boundedness of semistable objects. We show that such a structure exists whenever stability conditions are known to exist on the fibers. Our main application is the generalization of Mukai's theory for moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces to moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects in the Kuznetsov component associated to a cubic fourfold. This leads to the extension of theorems by Addington-Thomas and Huybrechts on the derived category of special cubic fourfolds, to a new proof of the integral Hodge conjecture, and to the construction of an infinite series of unirational locally complete families of polarized hyperkähler manifolds of K3 type. Other applications include the deformation-invariance of Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting Bridgeland stable objects on Calabi-Yau threefolds, and a method for constructing stability conditions on threefolds via degeneration.

Stability conditions on Kuznetsov components

We introduce a general method to induce Bridgeland stability conditions on semiorthogonal components of triangulated categories. In particular, we prove the existence of Bridgeland stability conditions on the Kuznetsov component of the derived category of Fano threefolds and of cubic fourfolds. As an application, in the appendix, written jointly with Xiaolei Zhao, we give a variant of the proof of the Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds by Huybrechts and Rennemo.

MMP for moduli of sheaves on K3s via wall-crossing: nef and movable cones, Lagrangian fibrations

We use wall-crossing with respect to Bridgeland stability conditions to systematically study the birational geometry of a moduli space M of stable sheaves on a K3 surface X: 1. We describe the nef cone, the movable cone, and the effective cone of M in terms of the Mukai lattice of X. 2. We establish a long-standing conjecture that predicts the existence of a birational Lagrangian fibration on M whenever M admits an integral divisor class D of square zero (with respect to the Beauville-Bogomolov form). These results are proved using a natural map from the space of Bridgeland stability conditions Stab(X) to the cone Mov(X) of movable divisors on M; this map relates wall-crossing in Stab(X) to birational transformations of M. In particular, every minimal model of M appears as a moduli space of Bridgeland-stable objects on X.

A short proof of the deformation property of Bridgeland stability conditions

The key result in the theory of Bridgeland stability conditions is the property that they form a complex manifold. This comes from the fact that given any small deformation of the central charge, there is a unique way to correspondingly deform the stability condition. We give a short direct proof of a strong version of this deformation property.

Brill-Noether theory for curves on generic abelian surfaces

We completely describe the Brill-Noether theory for curves in the primitive linear system on generic abelian surfaces, in the following sense: given integers $d$ and $r$, consider the variety $V^r_d(|H|)$ parametrizing curves $C$ in the primitive linear system $|H|$ together with a torsion-free sheaf on $C$ of degree $d$ and $r+1$ global sections. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for this variety to be non-empty, and show that it is either a disjoint union of Grassmannians, or irreducible. Moreover, we show that, when non-empty, it is of expected dimension. This completes prior results by Knutsen, Lelli-Chiesa and Mongardi.

Nef divisors for moduli spaces of complexes with compact support

In [BM14b], the first author and Macrì constructed a family of nef divisors on any moduli space of Bridgeland-stable objects on a smooth projective variety X. In this article, we extend this construction to the setting of any separated scheme Y of finite type over a field, where we consider moduli spaces of Bridgeland-stable objects on Y with compact support. We also show that the nef divisor is compatible with the polarising ample line bundle coming from the GIT construction of the moduli space in the special case when Y admits a tilting bundle and the stability condition arises from a θ-stability condition for the endomorphism algebra. Our main tool generalises the work of Abramovich--Polishchuk [AP06] and Polishchuk [Pol07]: given a t-structure on the derived category D_c(Y) on Y of objects with compact support and a base scheme S, we construct a constant family of t-structures on a category of objects on YxS with compact support relative to S.

Wall-Crossing implies Brill-Noether. Applications of stability conditions on surfaces

Over the last few years, wall-crossing for Bridgeland stability conditions has led to a large number of results in algebraic geometry, particular on birational geometry of moduli spaces. We illustrate some of the methods behind these result by reproving Lazarsfeld's Brill-Noether theorem for curves on K3 surfaces via wall-crossing. We conclude with a survey of recent applications of stability conditions on surfaces. The intended reader is an algebraic geometer with a limited working knowledge of derived categories. This article is based on the author's talk at the AMS Summer Institute on Algebraic Geometry in Utah, July 2015.

The Space of Stability Conditions on Abelian Threefolds, and on some Calabi-Yau Threefolds

We describe a connected component of the space of stability conditions on abelian threefolds, and on Calabi-Yau threefolds obtained as (the crepant resolution of) a finite quotient of an abelian threefold. Our proof includes the following essential steps: 1. We simultaneously strengthen a conjecture by the first two authors and Toda, and prove that it follows from a more natural and seemingly weaker statement. This conjecture is a Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality involving the third Chern character of "tilt-stable" two-term complexes on smooth projective threefolds; we extend it from complexes of tilt-slope zero to arbitrary tilt-slope. 2. We show that this stronger conjecture implies the so-called support property of Bridgeland stability conditions, and the existence of an explicit open subset of the space of stability conditions. 3. We prove our conjecture for abelian threefolds, thereby giving reproving and generalizing a result by Maciocia and Piyaratne. Important in our approach is a more systematic understanding on the behaviour of quadratic inequalities for semistable objects under wall-crossing, closely related to the support property.

Derived automorphism groups of K3 surfaces of Picard rank 1

We give a complete description of the group of exact autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a K3 surface of Picard rank 1. We do this by proving that a distinguished connected component of the space of stability conditions is preserved by all autoequivalences, and is contractible.

Projectivity and Birational Geometry of Bridgeland moduli spaces

We construct a family of nef divisor classes on every moduli space of stable complexes in the sense of Bridgeland. This divisor class varies naturally with the Bridgeland stability condition. For a generic stability condition on a K3 surface, we prove that this class is ample, thereby generalizing a result of Minamide, Yanagida, and Yoshioka. Our result also gives a systematic explanation of the relation between wall-crossing for Bridgeland-stability and the minimal model program for the moduli space. We give three applications of our method for classical moduli spaces of sheaves on a K3 surface: 1. We obtain a region in the ample cone in the moduli space of Gieseker-stable sheaves only depending on the lattice of the K3. 2. We determine the nef cone of the Hilbert scheme of n points on a K3 surface of Picard rank one when n is large compared to the genus. 3. We verify the "Hassett-Tschinkel/Huybrechts/Sawon" conjecture on the existence of a birational Lagrangian fibration for the Hilbert scheme in a new family of cases.
