Semigroup models for discrete holomorphic iteration in the unit disc

The main goal of this article is to develop a technique that allows us to partially embed the orbit of any holomorphic self-map $f$ of the disc, into a semigroup which captures the asymptotic behaviour of the orbit. This extends the semigroup-fication procedure introduced by Bracci and Roth to non-univalent functions. We use our technique in order to obtain sharp estimates for the rate with which the orbits of $f$ converge to the attracting fixed point; a fundamental, yet underdeveloped, concept in discrete iteration. Moreover, our results allow us to evaluate the slope of the orbits of $f$, and prove that they behave similarly to quasi-geodesic curves precisely when they converge non-tangentially.

Geometric conditions for matrix domination in two dimensions

In this article we prove a necessary and a sufficient condition for a finite subset of the special linear group to be dominated. These conditions are purely geometric in nature, as they only involve the trace and the eigenvectors of the matrices, and can be computed explicitly. Our sufficient condition, in particular, provides a simple algorithm for constructing a dominated set with prescribed eigenvectors. The techniques involved in our proofs take advantage of the interaction between dominated sets and two-dimensional hyperbolic geometry.

A note on the boundary dynamics of holomorphic iterated function systems

We consider the boundary dynamics of iterated function systems of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc. Our main result provides a sufficient condition which guarantees that the dynamical behaviour of a left iterated function system in the interior of the unit disc can be extended to the boundary. This generalises an extension of the classical Denjoy--Wolff Theorem, due to Bourdon, Matache and Shapiro, to the setting of iterated function systems. To do so we modify estimates for the Hardy norm of composition operators and combine them with a new technique of perturbing a left iterated function system by elliptic Möbius transformations.

Monotonicity properties of hyperbolic projections in holomorphic iteration

We consider hyperbolic projections of orbits of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc, onto curves landing on the unit circle with a given angle. We show that under certain, necessary, assumptions, the projections exhibit monotonicity properties akin to those present in continuous dynamics. Our techniques are purely hyperbolic-geometric in nature and provide the general framework for analysing projections of arbitrary sequences onto curves.

Symmetrization and the rate of convergence of semigroups of holomorphic functions

Let $(ϕ_t)$, $t\ge 0$, be a semigroup of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$. Let $Ω$ be its Koenigs domain and $τ\in \partial \mathbb{D}$ be its Denjoy-Wolff point. Suppose that $0\in Ω$ and let $Ω^\sharp$ be the Steiner symmetrization of $Ω$ with respect to the real axis. Consider the semigroup $(ϕ_t^\sharp)$ with Koenigs domain $Ω^\sharp$ and let $τ^\sharp$ be its Denjoy-Wolff point. We show that, up to a multiplicative constant, the rate of convergence of $(ϕ_t^\sharp)$ is slower than that of $(ϕ_t)$; that is, for every $t>0$, $|ϕ_t(0)-τ|\leq 4π\, |ϕ_t^\sharp(0)-τ^\sharp|$. The main tool for the proof is the harmonic measure.

Self-projective sets

Self-projective sets are natural fractal sets which describe the action of a semigroup of matrices on projective space. In recent years there has been growing interest in studying the dimension theory of self-projective sets, as well as progress in the understanding of closely related objects such as Furstenberg measures. The aim of this survey is twofold: first to motivate the study of these objects from several different perspectives and second to make the study of these objects more accessible for readers with expertise in iterated function systems.

Random iteration on hyperbolic Riemann surfaces

Let $\{f_ν\}$ be a sequence of holomorphic self-maps of a hyperbolic Riemann surface $X$. In this paper we shall study the asymptotic behavior of the sequences obtained by iteratively left-composing or right-composing the maps $\{f_ν\}$; the sequences of self-maps of $X$ so obtained are called left (respectively, right) iterated function systems. We shall prove the analogue for left iterated function systems of the theorems proved by Beardon, Carne, Minda and Ng for right iterated function systems with value in a Bloch domain; and we shall extend to the setting of general hyperbolic Riemann surfaces results obtained by Short and the second author in the unit disk for iterated function systems generated by maps close enough to a given self-map.

Parameter spaces of locally constant cocycles

This article concerns the locus of all locally constant $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-valued cocycles that are uniformly hyperbolic, called the hyperbolic locus. Using the theory of semigroups of Möbius transformations we introduce a new locus in $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})^N$ which allows us to study the complement of the hyperbolic locus. Our results answer a question of Avila, Bochi and Yoccoz, and Jacques and Short, while motivating a new line of investigation on the subject.

The Hausdorff dimension of self-projective sets

Given a finite set $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ we study the dimension of the attractor $K_\mathcal{A}$ of the iterated function system induced by the projective action of $\mathcal{A}$. In particular, we generalise a recent result of Solomyak and Takahashi by showing that the Hausdorff dimension of $K_\mathcal{A}$ is given by the minimum of 1 and the critical exponent, under the assumption that $\mathcal{A}$ satisfies certain discreteness conditions and a Diophantine property. Our approach combines techniques from the theories of iterated function systems and Möbius semigroups, and allows us to discuss the continuity of the Hausdorff dimension, as well as the dimension of the support of the Furstenberg measure.

Stability of the Denjoy-Wolff Theorem

The Denjoy-Wolff theorem is a foundational result in complex dynamics, which describes the dynamical behaviour of the sequence of iterates of a holomorphic self-map $f$ of the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$. Far less well understood are nonautonomous dynamical systems $F_n=f_n\circ f_{n-1} \circ \dots \circ f_1$ and $G_n=g_1\circ g_{2} \circ \dots \circ g_n$, for $n=1,2,\dotsc$, where $f_i$ and $g_j$ are holomorphic self-maps of $\mathbb{D}$. Here we obtain a thorough understanding of such systems $(F_n)$ and $(G_n)$ under the assumptions that $f_n\to f$ and $g_n\to f$. We determine when the dynamics of $(F_n)$ and $(G_n)$ mirror that of $(f^n)$, as specified by the Denjoy-Wolff theorem, thereby providing insight into the stability of the Denjoy-Wolff theorem under perturbations of the map $f$.
