CUBES: optical design and analysis of the VLT's high-resolution UV spectrograph past final design review

CUBES (Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph) will be the most efficient UV spectrograph on an 8-10m class telescope, exploiting the ESO VLT's higher telescope efficiency relative to the ESO ELT in ground-based UV wavelengths. The instrument provides wavelength coverage over a range of 300-405nm, with high instrumental efficiency (>37%) and a resolving power of >20,000 (HR) and >6,000 (LR). It will be mounted on the Cassegrain focus of the VLT in Paranal. This paper presents the optical design of the system after the final design review. The optical subsystems detailed include: a pair of UV-optimized atmospheric dispersion correctors designed to function out to a zenith angle of 65°; high throughput HR and LR image slicers used to reformat the field-of-view; and a dispersion-compensating three-lens spectrographic camera design.

Millimetre-scale spectrographs for next-generation photonic instrumentation

We present a set of ultra-compact spectrographs fabricated using two-photon polymerisation, each under 1 mm in length and printed directly onto an optical fiber. This fully integrated, alignment-free architecture enables extremely low-mass instrumentation with broad potential across astrophotonics, space systems, drone-based sensing, and quantum optics. Two transmissive configurations are presented; they combine beam-expansion optics, dispersive elements, and stray-light suppression within monolithic printed structures optimised for J- and H-band operation. Coarse gratings provide resolving powers of approximately R = 30. Experimental characterisation confirms the feasibility of fiber-coupled, fully printed spectrographs and demonstrates their promise as deployable components for next-generation integrated photonic instrumentation.

Little iLocater: paving the way for iLocater

Diffraction-limited radial velocity instruments offer a pathway towards improved precision and stability, and the exploration of new parameter spaces at high spatial and spectral resolution. However, achieving the necessary performance requires careful instrument design and considerable on-sky testing. We describe the design and construction of ``Little iLocater'' (Lili), a compact spectrograph that has been used to validate the performance of the front-end fibre-injection system of the iLocater spectrograph. We present the design, assembly, and performance using on-sky data obtained at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), including extraction of spectra from standard stars, testing of the atmospheric dispersion corrector to elevations of 40 degrees, and spatially resolved spectra from close companion systems. These results show the front-end fibre-injection system is performing as expected and is indicative of iLocater's capabilities once installed at the LBT.
