Muon internal bremsstrahlung: a conventional explanation for the excess electron-neutrino events in MiniBoone

We show that the rate of charged-current muon-neutrino events with a hard internal bremsstrahlung photon is consistent with the excess electron-neutrino candidate events reported by the MiniBoone and LSND (decay in flight) experiments. Hard photons radiated by the muon leg in charged-current neutrino interactions (neutrino-Nucleon->muon+gamma+nucleon) are a significant source of background that should be considered by current and future muon-neutrino to electron-neutrino neutrino oscillations appearance experiments (e.g. LSND, MiniBoone, SuperK, MINOS, T2K and NOVA).

A Unified Model for inelastic e-N and nu-N cross sections at all Q2

We present results using a new scaling variable, xi_w in modeling electron- and neutrino-nucleon scattering cross sections with effective leading order PDFs.Our model uses all inelastic charged lepton F_2 data (SLAC/BCDMS/NMC/HERA), and photoproduction data on hydrogen and deuterium. We find that our model describes all inelastic scattering charged lepton data, the average of JLAB resonance data, and neutrino data at all Q2. This model is currently used by current neutrino oscillation experiments in the few GeV region.

Improved low Q2 model for neutrino and electron nucleon cross sections in few GeV region

We present an improved model on neutrino- and electron-nucleon scattering cross sections using effective leading order PDFs with a new scaling variable xi_w. Non-perturbative QCD effects at low Q^2 are separately treated for u and d valence quarks, and sea quarks. The improved model uses all inelastic charged lepton F_2 data (SLAC/BCDMS/NMC/HERA), and photoproduction data on proton and deuterium. In this way, we obtain an improved model which describes all inelastic scattering charged lepton data, JLAB resonance data, and neutrino data. This improved model is expected to be better for neutrino oscillation experiments at few GeV region.

The Jupiter Electron Scattering Program at Jefferson Lab

JUPITER (Jlab Unified Program to Investigate nuclear Targets and Electroproduction of Resonances) is a new collaboration between the Nuclear Physics Electron Scattering and High Energy Physics Neutrino Scattering Communities to Investigate the Structure of Nucleons and Nuclei with Electron and Neutrino Beams. The first phase of JUPITER is Hall C experiment E04-001 on Inclusive Electron Scattering from Nuclear Targets. First data run of E04-001 is currently scheduled for January of 2005.

Implications of a 300-500 GeV/c^2 Z' boson on p\bar{p} collider data at \sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV

Recent analyses of precision low energy electroweak data indicate that the deviation from the Standard Model predictions of the measurement of atomic parity violation (2.3σ), the effective number of massless neutrinos (2σ), and A_b (2.7σ) could be better described if the existence of an extra Z' neutral gauge boson is assumed. We investigate the implications of a 300-500 GeV/c^2 extra Z' on current p\bar{p} collider data at \sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV, including the forward-backward charge asymmetry for very high mass e^+e^- pairs, and the invariant mass spectrum of high mass e^+e^-, μ^+μ^-, t\bar t and b\bar b pairs. For example, a 500 GeV/c^2 Z' with a total production cross section of \approx 3 pb and enhanced coupling to the third generation, better describes both the low energy and the Tevatron data.

Measurement of dsigma/dy for high mass Drell-Yan e+e- Pairs at CDF

We report on the first measurement of the rapidity distribution dsigma/dy over nearly the entire kinematic region of rapidity for e+e- pairs in the Z-boson region of 66 116 GeV/c2. The data sample consists of 108 pb-1 of pbar-p collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV taken by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992--1995. The total cross section in the Z-boson region is measured to be 252 +- 11 pb. The measured total cross section and dsigma/dy are compared with quantum chromodynamics calculations in leading and higher orders.

Performance of a Prototype CMS Hadron Barrel Calorimeter in a Test Beam

We report on the performance of a prototype CMS Hadron Barrel Calorimeter (HCAL) module in a test beam. The prototype sampling calorimeter used copper absorber plates and scintillator tiles with wavelength shifting fibers for readout. Placing a lead tungstate crystal electromagnetic calorimeter in front of HCAL affects the linearity and energy resolution of the combined system to hadrons. The data are used to optimize the choice of total absorber depth, sampling frequency, and longitudinal readout segmentation.
