Supercooling and phase coexistence in cosmological phase transitions

Cosmological phase transitions are predicted by Particle Physics models, and have a variety of important cosmological consequences, which depend strongly on the dynamics of the transition. In this work we investigate in detail the general features of the development of a first-order phase transition. We find thermodynamical constraints on some quantities that determine the dynamics, namely, the latent heat, the radiation energy density and the false-vacuum energy density. Using a simple model with a Higgs field, we study numerically the amount and duration of supercooling and the subsequent reheating and phase coexistence. We analyze the dependence of the dynamics on the different parameters of the model, namely, the energy scale, the number of degrees of freedom and the couplings of the scalar field with bosons and fermions. We also inspect the implications for the cosmological outcomes of the phase transition.

Dark energy from coexistence of phases

We suggest that the current acceleration of the universe may be explained by the vacuum energy of a hidden sector which is stuck in a state of equilibrium between phases. The phases are associated to a late-time first-order phase transition, where phase coexistence originates at a temperature $T_c \sim 10^{-3}eV$ and lasts until temperature falls below $T\sim 10^{-4}eV$. During phase coexistence, the energy density has an effective cosmological constant component with the observed magnitude. This scenario does not require supercooling and may arise naturally in realistic models.

Electroweak Baryogenesis and New TeV Fermions

New fermions, strongly coupled to the Standard Model Higgs boson provide a well motivated extension of the Standard Model (SM). In this work we show that, once new physics at heavier scales is added to stabilize the Higgs potential, such an extension of the SM can strengthen the first order electroweak phase transition and make the electroweak baryogenesis mechanism feasible. We propose a SM extension with TeV Higgsinos, Winos and Binos that satisfy the following properties: a) The electroweak phase transition is strong enough to avoid sphaleron erasure in the broken phase for values of the Higgs mass mH < 300 GeV; b) It provides large CP-violating currents that lead to the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe for natural values of the CP-violating phase; c) It also provides a natural Dark Matter candidate that can reproduce the observed dark matter density; d) It is consistent with electroweak precision measurements; e) It may arise from a softly broken supersymmetric theory with an extra (asymptotically free) gauge sector; e) It may be tested by electron electric dipole moment experiments in the near future.

Generation of baryon inhomogeneities in the electroweak phase transition

It is known that baryon number inhomogeneities may arise as a consequence of electroweak baryogenesis. Their geometry, size, and amplitude depend on the parameters that characterize the baryogenesis mechanism, as well as on those that determine the phase transition dynamics. We investigate this parametric dependance. We show that in the case of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the geometry of the inhomogeneities most probably consists of spherical regions of high density surrounded by low-density walls, in contrast to the case of the minimal standard model. In this supersymmetric extension we find that density contrasts of up to a factor of 100 may arise. This amplitude increases for higher values of the latent heat or lower values of the bubble wall tension, and can be significantly larger in different extensions of the standard model. Such inhomogeneities may thus affect the dynamics of the subsequent quark-hadron phase transition.

Decay of de Sitter vacua by thermal activation

Decay of a de Sitter vacuum may proceed through a "static" instanton, representing pair creation of critical bubbles separated by a distance comparable to the Hubble radius -- a process somewhat analogous to thermal activation in flat space. We compare this with related processes recently discussed in the literature.

First-order cosmological phase transitions in the radiation dominated era

We consider first-order phase transitions of the Universe in the radiation-dominated era. We argue that in general the velocity of interfaces is non-relativistic due to the interaction with the plasma and the release of latent heat. We study the general evolution of such slow phase transitions, which comprise essentially a short reheating stage and a longer phase equilibrium stage. We perform a completely analytical description of both stages. Some rough approximations are needed for the first stage, due to the non-trivial relations between the quantities that determine the variation of temperature with time. The second stage, instead, is considerably simplified by the fact that it develops at a constant temperature, close to the critical one. Indeed, in this case the equations can be solved exactly, including back-reaction on the expansion of the Universe. This treatment also applies to phase transitions mediated by impurities. We also investigate the relations between the different parameters that govern the characteristics of the phase transition and its cosmological consequences, and discuss the dependence of these parameters with the particle content of the theory.

Coincident brane nucleation and the neutralization of Λ

Nucleation of branes by a four-form field has recently been considered in string motivated scenarios for the neutralization of the cosmological constant. An interesting question in this context is whether the nucleation of stacks of coincident branes is possible, and if so, at what rate does it proceed. Feng et al. have suggested that, at high ambient de Sitter temperature, the rate may be strongly enhanced, due to large degeneracy factors associated with the number of light species living on the worldsheet. This might facilitate the quick relaxation from a large effective cosmological constant down to the observed value. Here, we analyse this possibility in some detail. In four dimensions, and after the moduli are stabilized, branes interact via repulsive long range forces. Because of that, the Coleman-de Luccia (CdL) instanton for coincident brane nucleation may not exist, unless there is some short range interaction which keeps the branes together. If the CdL instanton exists, we find that the degeneracy factor depends only mildly on the ambient de Sitter temperature, and does not switch off even in the case of tunneling from flat space. This would result in catastrophic decay of the present vacuum. If, on the contrary, the CdL instanton does not exist, coindident brane nucleation may still proceed through a "static" instanton, representing pair creation of critical bubbles -- a process somewhat analogous to thermal activation in flat space. In that case, the branes may stick together due to thermal symmetry restoration, and the pair creation rate depends exponentially on the ambient de Sitter temperature, switching off sharply as the temperature approaches zero. Such static instanton may be well suited for the "saltatory" relaxation scenario proposed by Feng et al.

Effect of reheating on electroweak baryogenesis

The latent heat released during the expansion of bubbles in the electroweak phase transition reheats the plasma and causes the bubble growth to slow down. This decrease of the bubble wall velocity affects the result of electroweak baryogenesis. Since the efficiency of baryogenesis peaks for a wall velocity $\sim 10^{-2}$, the resulting baryon asymmetry can either be enhanced or suppressed, depending on the initial value of the wall velocity. We calculate the evolution of the phase transition taking into account the release of latent heat. We find that, although in the SM the baryon production is enhanced by this effect, in the MSSM it causes a suppression to the final baryon asymmetry.

Development of the electroweak phase transition and baryogenesis

We investigate the evolution of the electroweak phase transition, using a one-Higgs effective potential that can be regarded as an approximation for the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The phase transition occurs in a small interval around a temperature T_t below the critical one. We calculate this temperature as a function of the parameters of the potential and of a damping coefficient related to the viscosity of the plasma. The parameters that are relevant for baryogenesis, such as the velocity and thickness of the walls of bubbles and the value of the Higgs field inside them, change significantly in the range of temperatures where the first-order phase transition can occur. However, we find that in the likely interval for T_t there is no significant variation of these parameters. Furthermore, the temperature T_t is in general not far below the temperature at which bubbles begin to nucleate.

Stability of Modified Electroweak Strings

We discuss the stability of an electroweak string with axions in its core, which give to the configuration a quasi-topological property, and compare it with other modifications using instantons in the thin wall approximation.

Strings With Axionic Content and Baryogenesis

We describe different electroweak strings with axionic content, including non-topological configurations calculated numerically, and show their possible influence on baryogenesis indicating that they may constitute a mechanism competitive to that of bubble nucleation with two Higgs-doublets.
