Quantum operations for Kramers-Wannier duality

We study the Kramers-Wannier duality for the transverse-field Ising lattice on a ring. A careful consideration of the ring boundary conditions shows that the duality has to be implemented with a proper treatment of different charge sectors of both the twisted and untwisted Ising and the dual-Ising Hilbert spaces. We construct a superoperator that explicitly maps the Ising operators to the dual-Ising operators. The superoperator naturally acts on the tensor product of the Ising and the dual-Ising Hilbert space. We then show that the relation between our superoperator and the Kramers-Wannier duality operator that maps the Ising Hilbert space to the dual-Ising Hilbert space is naturally provided by quantum operations and the duality can be understood as a quantum operation that we construct. We provide the operator-sum representation for the Kramers-Wannier quantum operations and reproduce the well-known fusion rules. In addition to providing the quantum information perspective on the Kramers-Wannier duality, our explicit protocol will also be useful in implementing the Kramers-Wannier duality on a quantum computer.

Bogoliubov Transformation and Schrodinger Representation on Curved Space

It is usually accepted that quantum dynamics described by Schrodinger equation that determines the evolution of states from one Cauchy surface to another is unitary. However, it has been known for some time that this expectation is not borne out in the conventional setting in which one envisages the dynamics on a fixed Hilbert space. Indeed it is not even true for linear quantum field theory on Minkowski space if the chosen Cauchy surfaces are not preserved by the flow of a timelike Killing vector. This issue was elegantly addressed and resolved by Agullo and Ashtekar who showed that in a general setting quantum dynamics in the Schrodinger picture does not take place in a fixed Hilbert space. Instead, it takes place on a non-trivial bundle over time, the Hilbert bundle, whose fibre at a given time is a Hilbert space at that time. In this article, we postulate a Schrodinger equation that incorporates the effect of change in vacuum during time evolution by including the Bogoliubov transformation explicitly in the Schrodinger equation. More precisely, for a linear (real) Klein-Gordon field on a globally hyperbolic spacetime we write down a Schrodinger equation that propagates states between arbitrary chosen Cauchy surfaces, thus describing the quantum dynamics on a Hilbert bundle. We show that this dynamics is unitary if a specific tensor on the canonical phase space satisfies the Hilbert-Schmidt condition. Generalized unitarity condition of Agullo-Ashtekar follows quite naturally from our construction.

AdS Asymptotic Symmetries from CFT Mirrors

We study Kac-Moody asymptotic symmetries and memory effects in $\text{AdS}_4^{\text{Poincare}}$ gauge theory and (when accompanied by 4D gravity) in its holographic CFT$_3$ dual. While such infinite-dimensional symmetries are absent in standard asymptotic analyses of $\text{AdS}_4$, we show how they arise with alternate AdS boundary conditions. In the 3D holographic description, these alternate boundary conditions correspond to a modified $\widetilde{\text{CFT}}_3$ obtained by Chern-Simons gauging of the CFT$_3$ dual defined by standard boundary conditions, so that Kac-Moody symmetries then follow from the familiar Chern-Simons/Wess-Zumino-Witten correspondence. Apart from their own intrinsic interest, in abelian $\text{AdS}_4$ gauge theories these alternate boundary conditions are equivalent to standard boundary conditions imposed on electric-magnetic dual variables. In the holographic description this corresponds to 3D "mirror" symmetries connecting the original and modified CFTs. Further, in both abelian and non-abelian theories we show that the alternative/$\widetilde{\text{CFT}}_3$ theory emerges at leading order in large Chern-Simons level from the correlators of the standard theory, upon incorporating large-wavelength limits in the holographically emergent dimension. We point out similarities and differences between 4D AdS and Minkowski gauge theories in their asymptotic symmetries, "soft" limits and memory effects.

Membrane paradigm for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We construct the membrane paradigm for black objects in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in spacetime dimensions $ \ge 5$. As in the case of general relativity, the horizon can be modeled as a membrane endowed with fluidlike properties. We derive the stress tensor for this membrane fluid and study the perturbation around static backgrounds with constant curvature horizon cross section, for which the stress tensor can be regularized with the usual redshift factor, and expressed in the form of a Newtonian viscous fluid with pressure, shear viscosity and bulk viscosity. We evaluate the transport coefficients for black holes with constant curvature horizons and negative or zero cosmological constant. For the black brane geometry our result for the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density agrees with that obtained previously in different frameworks.

Higher derivative gravity: field equation as the equation of state

One of the striking features of general relativity is that the Einstein equation is implied by the Clausius relation imposed on a small patch of locally constructed causal horizon. Extension of this thermodynamic derivation of the field equation to more general theories of gravity has been attempted many times in the last two decades. In particular, equations of motion for minimally coupled higher curvature theories of gravity, but without the derivatives of curvature, have previously been derived using a thermodynamic reasoning. In that derivation the horizon slices were endowed with an entropy density whose form resembles that of the Noether charge for diffeomorphisms, and was dubbed the Noetheresque entropy. In this paper, we propose a new entropy density, closely related to the Noetheresque form, such that the field equation of any diffeomorphism invariant metric theory of gravity can be derived by imposing the Clausius relation on a small patch of local causal horizon.

Black hole entropy and Lorentz-diffeomorphism Noether charge

We show that, in the first or second order orthonormal frame formalism, black hole entropy is the horizon Noether charge for a combination of diffeomorphism and local Lorentz symmetry involving the Lie derivative of the frame. The Noether charge for diffeomorphisms alone is unsuitable, since a regular frame cannot be invariant under the flow of the Killing field at the bifurcation surface. We apply this formalism to Lagrangians polynomial in wedge products of the frame field 1-form and curvature 2-form, including general relativity, Lovelock gravity, and "topological" terms in four dimensions.

A note on asymptotic symmetries and soft-photon theorem

We use the asymptotic data at conformal null-infinity $\mathscr{I}$ to formulate Weinberg's soft-photon theorem for Abelian gauge theories with massless charged particles. We show that the angle-dependent gauge transformations at $\mathscr{I}$ are not merely a gauge redundancy, instead they are genuine symmetries of the radiative phase space. In the presence of these symmetries, Poisson bracket between the gauge potentials is not well-defined. This does not pose an obstacle for the quantization of the radiative phase space, which proceeds by treating the conjugate electric field as the fundamental variable. Denoting by $\mathcal{G}_+$ and $\mathcal{G}_-$ as the group of gauge transformations at $\mathscr{I}^+$ and $\mathscr{I}^-$ respectively, Strominger has shown that a certain diagonal subgroup $ \mathcal{G}_{diag} \subset \mathcal{G}_+ \times \mathcal{G}_-$ is the symmetry of the S-matrix and Weinberg's soft-photon theorem is the corresponding Ward identity. We give a systematic derivation of this result for Abelian gauge theories with massless charged particles. Our derivation is a slight generalization of the existing derivations since it is applicable even when the bulk spacetime is not exactly flat, but is only "almost" Minkowskian.

Emergent gravitational dynamics in relativistic Bose--Einstein condensate

Analogue models of gravity have played a pivotal role in the past years by providing a test bench for many open issues in quantum field theory in curved spacetime such as the robustness of Hawking radiation and cosmological particle production. More recently, the same models have offered a valuable framework within which current ideas about the emergence of spacetime and its dynamics could be discussed via convenient toy models. In this context, we study here an analogue gravity system based on a relativistic Bose--Einstein condensate. We show that in a suitable limit this system provides not only an example of an emergent spacetime (with a massive and a massless relativistic fields propagating on it) but also that such spacetime is governed by an equation with geometric meaning that takes the familiar form of Nordstr{ö}m theory of gravitation. In this equation the gravitational field is sourced by the expectation value of the trace of the effective stress energy tensor of the quasiparticles while the Newton and cosmological constants are functions of the fundamental scales of the microscopic system. This is the first example of analogue gravity in which a Lorentz invariant, geometric theory of semiclassical gravity emerges from an underlying quantum theory of matter in flat spacetime.

GR 20 Parallel Session A3: Modified Gravity

This is the contribution representing Parallel Session A3, on Modified Gravity, in the Proceedings of the GR 20 Conference (July 2013, Warszawa, Poland). It consists of three invited chapters, selected by the Session Chair (P.H.) to represent the broad spectrum of topics discussed in the Session, which ranged from theoretical and phenomenological, to experimental, observational and numerical aspects of gravity. The three chapters are "Einstein-Aether Theory: Thermodynamics of Universal Horizons" by Arif Mohd, "The Curious Case of Conformal Anomalies in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity" by Charles M. Melby-Thompson, and "Detectability of Scalar Gravitational-Wave Bursts with LIGO and Virgo" by Peter Shawhan.

Ray tracing Einstein-Æther black holes: Universal versus Killing horizons

Violating Lorentz-invariance, and so implicitly permitting some form of superluminal communication, necessarily alters the notion of a black hole. Nevertheless, in both Einstein-Æther gravity, and Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, there is still a causally disconnected region in black-hole solutions; now being bounded by a "Universal horizon", which traps excitations of arbitrarily high velocities. To better understand the nature of these black holes, and their Universal horizons, we study ray trajectories in these spacetimes. We find evidence that Hawking radiation is associated with the Universal horizon, while the "lingering" of ray trajectories near the Killing horizon hints at reprocessing there. In doing this we solve an apparent discrepancy between the surface gravity of the Universal horizon and the associated temperature derived by tunneling method. These results advance the understanding of these exotic horizons, and provide hints for a full understanding of black-hole thermodynamics in Lorentz-violating theories.

On the thermodynamics of universal horizons in Einstein-Æther theory

The theories of gravity which violate local Lorentz invariance do not admit a universal maximum speed of signal-propagation. Different field excitations see a different effective metric and hence a different light cone. In these theories, although one can define the Killing horizon in a conventional way, this definition does not capture the notion of a black hole. This is so because there exist modes which see a wider light cone than the one defined by the Killing Horizon and therefore can escape to infinity. However, there exist solutions of these theories which admit a special spacelike hypersurface which acts as a one-way membrane. Signals from beyond this hypersurface can never escape to infinity and are destined to hit the singularity. In this sense this hypersurface acts like a black-hole horizon and is called the Universal Horizon because it traps modes travelling with arbitrarily high velocities. We use the Noether charge method {\it à la} Wald to show that a first law, which resembles the first law of thermodynamics, can be formulated for universal horizons in the Einstein-Æther theory. This seems to suggest that in Lorentz violating theories one should ascribe the thermodynamical properties to the universal horizon and not to the Killing horizon.

Thermodynamics of Local Causal Horizons

We propose an expression for the entropy density associated with the Local Causal Horizons in any diffeomorphism invariant theory of gravity. If the black-hole entropy of the theory satisfies the physical process version of the first law of thermodynamics then our proposed entropy satisfies the Clausius relation. Thus, our study shows that the thermodynamic nature of the spacetime horizons is not restricted to the black holes; it also applies to the local causal horizons in the neighborhood of any point in the spacetime.

Asymptotically anti de Sitter spacetimes in three dimensions

We revisit the asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetimes in three dimensions. Using the conformal-completion technique, we formulate the boundary conditions in a covariant fashion and construct the global charges associated with the asymptotic symmetries. The charges so constructed are conserved for the asymptotic Killing vectors fields but are not conserved for the asymptotic conformal Killing vector fields. The quantity integrated to obtain the global charge is interpreted as the Brown-York boundary stress-energy tensor and it is found not to be traceless. The trace is interpreted as the trace anomaly and it turns out to be the same as the Brown-Henneaux central charge.
