Heavy-quark pair-production in DIS at NLO QCD matched to a parton shower

We present theoretical predictions for heavy-quark pair-production in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at next-to-leading order (NLO) in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), matched to a parton shower in the POWHEG framework. We revisit the NLO heavy-quark pair-production cross section and implement a consistent matching to parton-shower evolution, with careful treatment of heavy-quark mass effects and the avoidance of double counting between fixed-order and parton-shower radiation. In addition, we compare the virtual NLO corrections available in the literature to one-loop amplitudes obtained through massification in the small-mass limit. This provides an independent validation of the virtual contributions. The study is presently restricted to the gluon-initiated channel, which dominates the kinematic region of interest at the HERA collider and remains important for the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Towards numerical two-loop integrand reduction

We present a method for the integrand-level reduction of two-loop helicity amplitudes in both $d=4-2\epsilon$ and $d=4$ dimensions. The amplitude is expressed in terms of a set of Feynman integrals and their coefficients that depend on the external kinematics. The analysis presented in this paper, in conjunction with the ongoing development of the computational framework $\text{HELAC-2LOOP}$, paves the road for the construction of an automated program for two-loop amplitude calculations for arbitrary scattering processes.

Factorization at subleading power in deep inelastic scattering in the $x\rightarrow 1$ limit

We examine the endpoint region of inclusive deep inelastic scattering at next-to-leading power (NLP). Using a soft-collinear effective theory approach with no explicit soft or collinear modes, we discuss the factorization of the cross section at NLP and show that the overlap subtraction procedure introduced to eliminate double counting of degrees of freedom at leading power ensures that spurious endpoint divergences in the rate cancel at NLP at one loop. For this cancellation to occur at all renormalization scales a nontrivial relation between the anomalous dimensions of the leading and subleading operators is required, which is demonstrated to hold at one loop.

Unsupervised Hadronic SUEP at the LHC

Confining dark sectors with pseudo-conformal dynamics produce SUEP, or Soft Unclustered Energy Patterns, at colliders: isotropic dark hadrons with soft and democratic energies. We target the experimental nightmare scenario, SUEPs in exotic Higgs decays, where all dark hadrons decay promptly to SM hadrons. First, we identify three promising observables, the charged particle multiplicity, the event ring isotropy, and the matrix of geometric distances between charged tracks. Their patterns can be exploited through a cut-and-count search, supervised machine learning, or an unsupervised autoencoder. We find that the HL-LHC will probe exotic Higgs branching ratios at the per-cent level, even without a detailed knowledge of the signal features. Our techniques can be applied to other SUEP searches, especially the unsupervised strategy, which is independent of overly specific model assumptions and the corresponding precision simulations.

Factorization of Power Corrections in the Drell-Yan Process in EFT

We examine the quark-induced Drell-Yan process at next-to-leading power (NLP) in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory. Using an approach with no explicit soft or collinear modes, we discuss the factorization of the differential cross section in the small-$q_T$ hierarchy with $q^2\gg q_T^2\ggΛ_{\mathrm{QCD}}^2$. We show that the cross section may be written in terms of matrix elements of power-suppressed operators $T_{(i,j)}$, which contribute to $O(q_T^2/q^2)$ coefficients of the usual parton distribution functions. We derive a factorization for this observable at NLP which allows the large logarithms in each of the relevant factors to be resummed. We discuss the cancellation of rapidity divergences and the overlap subtractions required to eliminate double counting at next-to-leading power.

Rapidity Logarithms in SCET Without Modes

We re-examine observables with rapidity divergences in the context of a formulation of Soft-Collinear Effective Theory in which infrared degrees of freedom are not explicitly separated into modes. We consider the Sudakov form factor with a massive vector boson and Drell-Yan production of lepton pairs at small transverse momentum as demonstrative examples. In this formalism, rapidity divergences introduce a scheme dependence into the effective theory and are associated with large logarithms appearing in the soft matching conditions. This scheme dependence may be used to derive the corresponding rapidity renormalization group equations, and rates naturally factorize into hard, soft and jet contributions without the introduction of explicit modes.
