Grassmannian-parameterized solutions to direct-sum polygon and simplex equations

We consider polygon and simplex equations, of which the simplest nontrivial examples are pentagon (5-gon) and Yang--Baxter (2-simplex), respectively. We examine the general structure of (2n+1)-gon and 2n-simplex equations in direct sums of vector spaces. Then we provide a construction for their solutions, parameterized by elements of the Grassmannian Gr(n+1,2n+1).

Tropical limit of matrix solitons and entwining Yang-Baxter maps

We consider a matrix refactorization problem, i.e., a "Lax representation", for the Yang-Baxter map that originated as the map of polarizations from the "pure" 2-soliton solution of a matrix KP equation. Using the Lax matrix and its inverse, a related refactorization problem determines another map, which is not a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation, but satisfies a mixed version of the Yang-Baxter equation together with the Yang-Baxter map. Such maps have been called "entwining Yang-Baxter maps" in recent work. In fact, the map of polarizations obtained from a pure 2-soliton solution of a matrix KP equation, and already for the matrix KdV reduction, is NOT in general a Yang-Baxter map, but it is described by one of the two maps or their inverses. We clarify why the weaker version of the Yang-Baxter equation holds, by exploring the pure 3-soliton solution in the "tropical limit", where the 3-soliton interaction decomposes into 2-soliton interactions. Here this is elaborated for pure soliton solutions, generated via a binary Darboux transformation, of matrix generalizations of the two-dimensional Toda lattice equation, where we meet the same entwining Yang-Baxter maps as in the KP case, indicating a kind of universality.

Differential Calculi on Associative Algebras and Integrable Systems

After an introduction to some aspects of bidifferential calculus on associative algebras, we focus on the notion of a "symmetry" of a generalized zero curvature equation and derive Backlund and (forward, backward and binary) Darboux transformations from it. We also recall a matrix version of the binary Darboux transformation and, inspired by the so-called Cauchy matrix approach, present an infinite system of equations solved by it. Finally, we sketch recent work on a deformation of the matrix binary Darboux transformation in bidifferential calculus, leading to a treatment of integrable equations with sources.

Matrix Boussinesq solitons and their tropical limit

We study soliton solutions of matrix "good" Boussinesq equations, generated via a binary Darboux transformation. Essential features of these solutions are revealed via their "tropical limit", as exploited in previous work about the KP equation. This limit associates a point particle interaction picture with a soliton (wave) solution.

Matrix KP: tropical limit and Yang-Baxter maps

We study soliton solutions of matrix Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equations in a tropical limit, in which their support at fixed time is a planar graph and polarizations are attached to its constituting lines. There is a subclass of "pure line soliton solutions" for which we find that, in this limit, the distribution of polarizations is fully determined by a Yang-Baxter map. For a vector KP equation, this map is given by an R-matrix, whereas it is a non-linear map in case of a more general matrix KP equation. We also consider the corresponding Korteweg-deVries (KdV) reduction. Furthermore, exploiting the fine structure of soliton interactions in the tropical limit, we obtain a new solution of the tetrahedron (or Zamolodchikov) equation. Moreover, a solution of the functional tetrahedron equation arises from the parameter-dependence of the vector KP R-matrix.

Matrix KP: tropical limit, Yang-Baxter and pentagon maps

In the tropical limit of matrix KP-II solitons, their support at fixed time is a planar graph with "polarizations" attached to its linear parts. In this work we explore a subclass of soliton solutions whose tropical limit graph has the form of a rooted and generically binary tree, as well as solutions with a limit graph consisting of two relatively inverted such rooted tree graphs. The distribution of polarizations over the constituting lines of the graph is fully determined by a parameter-dependent binary operation and a (in general non-linear) Yang-Baxter map, which in the vector KP case becomes linear, hence is given by an R-matrix. The parameter-dependence of the binary operation leads to a solution of the pentagon equation, which exhibits a certain relation with the Rogers dilogarithm via a solution of the hexagon equation, the next member in the family of polygon equations. A generalization of the R-matrix, obtained in the vector KP case, is found to also solve a pentagon equation. A corresponding local version of the latter then leads to a new solution of the hexagon equation.

Self-Consistent Sources for Integrable Equations via Deformations of Binary Darboux Transformations

We reveal the origin and structure of self-consistent source extensions of integrable equations from the perspective of binary Darboux transformations. They arise via a deformation of the potential that is central in this method. As examples, we obtain in particular matrix versions of self-consistent source extensions of the sine-Gordon, nonlinear Schrodinger, KdV, Boussinesq, KP, Davey-Stewartson, two-dimensional Toda lattice and discrete KP systems. We also recover a (2+1)-dimensional version of the Yajima-Oikawa system from a deformation of the pKP hierarchy. By construction, these systems are accompanied by a hetero binary Darboux transformation, which generates solutions of such a system from a solution of the source-free system and additionally solutions of an associated linear system and its adjoint. The essence of all this is encoded in universal equations in the framework of bidifferential calculus.

Simplex and Polygon Equations

It is shown that higher Bruhat orders admit a decomposition into a higher Tamari order, the corresponding dual Tamari order, and a "mixed order." We describe simplex equations (including the Yang-Baxter equation) as realizations of higher Bruhat orders. Correspondingly, a family of "polygon equations" realizes higher Tamari orders. They generalize the well-known pentagon equation. The structure of simplex and polygon equations is visualized in terms of deformations of maximal chains in posets forming 1-skeletons of polyhedra. The decomposition of higher Bruhat orders induces a reduction of the $N$-simplex equation to the $(N+1)$-gon equation, its dual, and a compatibility equation.

KdV soliton interactions: a tropical view

Via a "tropical limit" (Maslov dequantization), Korteweg-deVries (KdV) solitons correspond to piecewise linear graphs in two-dimensional space-time. We explore this limit.

Binary Darboux Transformations in Bidifferential Calculus and Integrable Reductions of Vacuum Einstein Equations

We present a general solution-generating result within the bidifferential calculus approach to integrable partial differential and difference equations, based on a binary Darboux-type transformation. This is then applied to the non-autonomous chiral model, a certain reduction of which is known to appear in the case of the D-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations with D-2 commuting Killing vector fields. A large class of exact solutions is obtained, and the aforementioned reduction is implemented. This results in an alternative to the well-known Belinski-Zakharov formalism. We recover relevant examples of space-times in dimensions four (Kerr-NUT, Tomimatsu-Sato) and five (single and double Myers-Perry black holes, black saturn, bicycling black rings).

The Non-Autonomous Chiral Model and the Ernst Equation of General Relativity in the Bidifferential Calculus Framework

The non-autonomous chiral model equation for an $m \times m$ matrix function on a two-dimensional space appears in particular in general relativity, where for $m=2$ a certain reduction of it determines stationary, axially symmetric solutions of Einstein's vacuum equations, and for $m=3$ solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. Using a very simple and general result of the bidifferential calculus approach to integrable partial differential and difference equations, we generate a large class of exact solutions of this chiral model. The solutions are parametrized by a set of matrices, the size of which can be arbitrarily large. The matrices are subject to a Sylvester equation that has to be solved and generically admits a unique solution. By imposing the aforementioned reductions on the matrix data, we recover the Ernst potentials of multi-Kerr-NUT and multi-Demianski-Newman metrics.

KP solitons, higher Bruhat and Tamari orders

In a tropical approximation, any tree-shaped line soliton solution, a member of the simplest class of soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP-II) equation, determines a chain of planar rooted binary trees, connected by right rotation. More precisely, it determines a maximal chain of a Tamari lattice. We show that an analysis of these solutions naturally involves higher Bruhat and higher Tamari orders.

On a (2+1)-dimensional generalization of the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice and a discrete Davey-Stewartson system

We propose a natural (2+1)-dimensional generalization of the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice that is an integrable space discretization of the cubic nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) system in 1+1 dimensions. By further requiring rotational symmetry of order 2 in the two-dimensional lattice, we identify an appropriate change of dependent variables, which translates the (2+1)-dimensional Ablowitz-Ladik lattice into a suitable space discretization of the Davey-Stewartson system. The space-discrete Davey-Stewartson system has a Lax pair and allows the complex conjugation reduction between two dependent variables as in the continuous case. Moreover, it is ideally symmetric with respect to space reflections. Using the Hirota bilinear method, we construct some exact solutions such as multidromion solutions.

Bidifferential calculus, matrix SIT and sine-Gordon equations

We express a matrix version of the self-induced transparency (SIT) equations in the bidifferential calculus framework. An infinite family of exact solutions is then obtained by application of a general result that generates exact solutions from solutions of a linear system of arbitrary matrix size. A side result is a solution formula for the sine-Gordon equation.

KP line solitons and Tamari lattices

The KP-II equation possesses a class of line soliton solutions which can be qualitatively described via a tropical approximation as a chain of rooted binary trees, except at "critical" events where a transition to a different rooted binary tree takes place. We prove that these correspond to maximal chains in Tamari lattices (which are poset structures on associahedra). We further derive results that allow to compute details of the evolution, including the critical events. Moreover, we present some insights into the structure of the more general line soliton solutions. All this yields a characterization of possible evolutions of line soliton patterns on a shallow fluid surface (provided that the KP-II approximation applies).

Bidifferential Calculus Approach to AKNS Hierarchies and Their Solutions

We express AKNS hierarchies, admitting reductions to matrix NLS and matrix mKdV hierarchies, in terms of a bidifferential graded algebra. Application of a universal result in this framework quickly generates an infinite family of exact solutions, including e.g. the matrix solitons in the focusing NLS case. Exploiting a general Miura transformation, we recover the generalized Heisenberg magnet hierarchy and establish a corresponding solution formula for it. Simply by exchanging the roles of the two derivations of the bidifferential graded algebra, we recover "negative flows", leading to an extension of the respective hierarchy. In this way we also meet a matrix and vector version of the short pulse equation and also the sine-Gordon equation. For these equations corresponding solution formulas are also derived. In all these cases the solutions are parametrized in terms of matrix data that have to satisfy a certain Sylvester equation.

Solutions of matrix NLS systems and their discretisations: A unified treatment

Using a bidifferential graded algebra approach to integrable partial differential or difference equations, a unified treatment of continuous, semi-discrete (Ablowitz-Ladik) and fully discrete matrix NLS systems is presented. These equations originate from a universal equation within this framework, by specifying a representation of the bidifferential graded algebra and imposing a reduction. By application of a general result, corresponding families of exact solutions are obtained that in particular comprise the matrix soliton solutions in the focusing NLS case. The solutions are parametrised in terms of constant matrix data subject to a Sylvester equation (which previously appeared as a rank condition in the integrable systems literature). These data exhibit a certain redundancy, which we diminish to a large extent. More precisely, we first consider more general AKNS-type systems from which two different matrix NLS systems emerge via reductions. In the continuous case, the familiar Hermitian conjugation reduction leads to a continuous matrix (including vector) NLS equation, but it is well-known that this does not work as well in the discrete cases. On the other hand there is a complex conjugation reduction, which apparently has not been studied previously. It leads to square matrix NLS systems, but works in all three cases (continuous, semi- and fully-discrete). A large part of this work is devoted to an exploration of the corresponding solutions, in particular regularity and asymptotic behaviour of matrix soliton solutions.

Quasi-symmetric functions and the KP hierarchy

Quasi-symmetric functions show up in an approach to solve the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy. This moreover features a new nonassociative product of quasi-symmetric functions that satisfies simple relations with the ordinary product and the outer coproduct. In particular, supplied with this new product and the outer coproduct, the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions becomes an infinitesimal bialgebra. Using these results we derive a sequence of identities in the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions that are in formal correspondence with the equations of the KP hierarchy.
