A single length scale rules ballistic aggregation: travels of a droplet train

Ballistic aggregation is a canonical non-equilibrium process, relevant across scales from granular gases to planetary accretion. Collisions are driven by differences in velocities, building up persistent correlations between neighbors. Here, we provide the first experimental realization of one-dimensional ballistic aggregation in a train of droplets formed by the breakup of a liquid jet. Experiments and simulations confirm the analytically predicted scaling, with the global process shown to be governed by a single length scale. While air drag inverts the sign of neighbor velocity correlations, a 1D ordering constraint protects bulk characteristics of ballistic aggregation such as the scaling exponent and the shape of the large mass tail. More broadly, our results show that Smoluchowski-like mean-field descriptions fail when collisions carry directional memory -- as demonstrated here for jet-generated sprays.

A Resolution of the Ito-Stratonovich Debate in Quantum Stochastic Processes

Quantum stochastic processes are widely used in describing open quantum systems and in the context of quantum foundations. Physically relevant quantum stochastic processes driven by multiplicative colored noise are generically non-Markovian and analytically intractable. Further, their Markovian limits are generically inequivalent when using either the Ito or Stratonovich conventions for the same quantum stochastic processes. We introduce a quantum noise homogenization scheme that temporally coarse-grains non-Markovian, colored-noise-driven quantum stochastic processes and connects them to their effective white-noise (Markovian) limits. Our approach uses a novel phase-space augmentation that maps the non-Markovian dynamics into a higher-dimensional Markovian system and then applies a controlled perturbative coarse-graining scheme in the characteristic time scales of the noise. This allows an explicit analytical algorithm to derive effective Markovian generators with renormalized coefficients and enables various physical constraints, such as causality, to be imposed on them. We thus resolve the Ito--Stratonovich ambiguity for multiplicative colored-noise-driven quantum stochastic processes, wherein we show that their consistent Markovian limit corresponds to the Stratonovich convention with renormalized coefficients as well as correction terms in Ito's convention. By assuming their Markovian limit unravels causal, completely positive and trace-preserving dynamics, we further characterize a physically relevant family of non-Markovian quantum stochastic processes driven by multiplicative colored~noise.

Spontaneous irreversibility and objective thermalization in stochastic modifications of quantum theory

The deterministic and time-reversal symmetric dynamics of isolated quantum systems is at odds with irreversible equilibration observed in generic thermodynamic systems. Standard approaches at a reconciliation employ subjective restrictions on the space of observables or states and do not explain how a single macroscopic quantum system achieves equilibrium dynamically. We instead argue that quantum theory is an effective theory and requires corrections to accurately describe systems approaching the thermodynamic limit. We construct a stochastic extension of quantum theory which is practically identical to quantum mechanics for microscopic systems, yet allows individual macroscopic and isolated systems to objectively thermalize, generically. A fluctuation-dissipation relation guarantees physical consistency including norm preservation, energy conservation, no superluminal signalling and the emergence of microcanonical equilibrium. We further discuss the inclusion of objective collapse, thereby realizing a falsifiable theory of spontaneous universal irreversibility which describes the quantum-to-classical crossover dynamics of macroscopic quantum systems. The dynamics of the model describe spontaneous symmetry breaking, quantum state reduction and objective quantum thermalization for individual systems, while realizing emergent hybrid statistics for ensembles that integrate Born's rule and microcanonical equilibrium.

Superluminal signalling witness for quantum state reduction

Models for quantum state reduction address the quantum measurement problem by suggesting weak modifications to Schr\"odinger's equation that have no observable effect at microscopic scales, but dominate the dynamics of macroscopic objects. Enforcing linearity of the master equation for such models has long been used as a way of ensuring that modifications to Schr\"odinger's equation do not introduce a possibility for superluminal signalling. In large classes of quantum state reduction models, however, and in particular in models employing correlated noise, formulating a master equation for the quantum state is prohibitively difficult or impossible. Here, we formulate a witness for superluminal signalling that is applicable to generic quantum state reduction models, including those involving correlated as well as uncorrelated noise. Surprisingly, application of the witness to known models described by linear master equations shows that these may still admit superluminal signalling, unless a particular locality condition is obeyed. In contrast, we show that the witness introduced here provides a necessary and sufficient condition for excluding superluminal signals under all circumstances. We further apply the witness to several models driven by physical, correlated noise, where linear master equations are not analytically obtainable, and find that they allow for superluminal signalling. We suggest how specific correlated-noise models may be able to avoid it, and that the witness introduced here provides a stringent guide to constructing such models.

Continuous spontaneous localization as the white-noise limit of spontaneous unitarity violation

Objective collapse theories propose modifications to Schr\"odinger's equation that solve the quantum measurement problem by interpolating between microscopic quantum dynamics and projective evolution of macroscopic objects. Colored-noise driven collapse theories extending the equilibrium description of spontaneous symmetry breaking to spontaneous violations of unitarity (SUV) in quantum dynamics were recently shown to possess a Markovian white noise limit when applied to initial two-state superpositions. Here, we show that this limit coincides with a subclass of continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) models collapsing in a basis of spatially localised energy eigenstates. We show that the energy expectation value remains conserved throughout this process, and we also extend the model to a form that can be applied to any initial state. We furthermore show that, as for the SUV models, the emergence of Born rule statistics in the Markovian limit is enforced by a fluctuation-dissipation relation which results in ensemble averaged probability densities following a linear quantum semi-group guaranteeing the absence of superluminal signaling.

Colored noise driven unitarity violation causing dynamical quantum state reduction

Unitarity violations were recently proposed as a cause of objective quantum state reduction. This complements proposals based on stochastic modifications of Schrodinger's equation, but also differs from them in several aspects. Here, we formalise the description of unitarity violations, and show that they generically imply models of dynamical quantum state reduction (DQSR) driven by colored noise. We present a formalism for exploring such models as well as a prescription for enforcing explicit norm-preservation, and we show that the resulting pure state dynamics is described by a modified von-Neumann Liouville equation which in a particular limit reduces to the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) master equations. We additionally show adherence to Born's rule emerging in the same limit from a physical constraint relating fluctuating and dissipating components of the model.

Quantum state reduction of general initial states through spontaneous unitarity violation

The inability of Schrodinger's unitary time evolution to describe measurement of a quantum state remains a central foundational problem. It was recently suggested that the unitarity of Schrodinger dynamics can be spontaneously broken, resulting in measurement as an emergent phenomenon in the thermodynamic limit. Here, we introduce a family of models for spontaneous unitarity violation that apply to generic initial superpositions over arbitrarily many states, using either single or multiple state-independent stochastic components. Crucially, we show that Born's probability rule emerges spontaneously in all cases.

Probing Flat Band Physics in Spin Ice Systems via Polarized Neutron Scattering

In this paper, we illustrate how polarized neutron scattering can be used to isolate the spin-spin correlations of modes forming flat bands in a frustrated magnetic system hosting a classical spin liquid phase. In particular, we explain why the nearest-neighbor spin ice model, whose interaction matrix has two flat bands, produces a dispersionless (i.e. "flat") response in the non-spin-flip (NSF) polarized neutron scattering channel, and demonstrate that NSF scattering is a highly sensitive probe of correlations induced by weak perturbations which lift the flat band degeneracy. We use this to explain the experimentally measured dispersive (i.e. non-flat) NSF channel of the dipolar spin ice compound $\mathrm{Ho}_2 \mathrm{Ti}_2 \mathrm{O}_7$.
