Automorphisms of the moduli space of smooth cubic surfaces and its fundamental group

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be the moduli space of smooth complex cubic surfaces and let $π_1(\mathcal{C})$ be its (orbifold) fundamental group. We prove that the ``divisor subgroup'' of $π_1(\mathcal{C})$ is characteristic. This can be interpreted as saying that the group theory of $π_1(\mathcal{C})$ ``remembers'' the divisor of nodal cubic surfaces. We deduce from this group-theoretic result and some basic complex analysis that $\mathcal{C}$ has no nontrivial biholomorphic automorphisms as complex analytic orbifold.

The theorem of Maehara-Severi for maps of general type

We prove a finiteness result for dominant rational maps whose orbifold base is of general type. Our finiteness result generalizes Maehara's theorem that a given variety dominates only finitely many projective varieties of general type up to birational equivalence, and also answers a question of Campana on the finiteness of Bogomolov sheaves. We give several further applications, including finiteness results for maps to curves, abelian varieties, and K3 surfaces.

Weakly special varieties, Campana stacks, and Remarks on Orbifold Mordell

We construct the first weakly special surfaces that are not Campana-special, including the complement of the plane curve $x^2y^3 = 1$ in $\mathbb{A}^2$. We prove that the set of $\mathcal{O}_{K,S}$-integral points on this surface is non-dense for every number field $K$ and finite set $S$ of finite places of $K$ if and only if Campana's Orbifold Mordell conjecture holds for $(\mathbb{G}_m, \tfrac{1}{2}[1])$. This basic example carries a natural $\mathbb{G}_m$-action, and the quotient stack is an Artin stack parametrizing points on a C-pair. This leads to the introduction of ``Campana stacks'', which encode morphisms of C-pairs in a manner analogous to the role of root stacks for integral points satisfying prescribed divisibility conditions.

The Weakly Special Conjecture contradicts orbifold Mordell, and hence the abc conjecture

Starting from an Enriques surface over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ considered by Lafon, we give the first examples of smooth projective weakly special threefolds which fibre over the projective line in Enriques surfaces (resp. K3 surfaces) with nowhere reduced, but non-divisible, fibres and general type orbifold base. We verify that these families of Enriques surfaces (resp. K3 surfaces) are non-isotrivial and compute their fundamental groups by studying the behaviour of local points along certain étale covers. The existence of the above threefolds implies that the Weakly Special Conjecture formulated in 2000 contradicts the Orbifold Mordell Conjecture, and hence the abc conjecture. Using these examples, we can also easily disprove several complex-analytic analogues of the Weakly Special Conjecture. Finally, the existence of such threefolds shows that Enriques surfaces and K3 surfaces can have non-divisible but nowhere reduced degenerations, thereby answering a question raised in 2005.

Symmetric products and puncturing Campana-special varieties

We give a counterexample to the Arithmetic Puncturing Conjecture and Geometric Puncturing Conjecture of Hassett-Tschinkel using symmetric powers of uniruled surfaces, and propose a corrected conjecture inspired by Campana's conjectures on special varieties. We confirm Campana's conjecture on potential density for symmetric powers of products of curves. As a by-product, we obtain an example of a surface without a potentially dense set of rational points, but for which some symmetric power does have a dense set of rational points, and even satisfies Corvaja-Zannier's version of the Hilbert property.

Weakly-special threefolds and non-density of rational points

We verify part of a conjecture of Campana predicting that rational points on the weakly-special non-special simply-connected smooth projective threefolds constructed by Bogomolov-Tschinkel are not dense. To prove our result, we establish fundamental properties of moduli spaces of orbifold maps, and prove a dimension bound for such moduli spaces by using the recent extension of Kobayashi-Ochiai's finiteness theorem for Campana's orbifold pairs.

Finiteness of pointed maps to moduli spaces of polarized varieties

We establish a finiteness result for pointed maps to the base space $U$ of a smooth projective family of varieties with maximal variation in moduli. For its proof, we establish the rigidity of pointed maps to a (not necessarily compact) variety which is hyperbolic modulo a proper closed subset. Together with Viehweg's hyperbolicity conjecture on the bigness of log-canonical bundles of moduli spaces, resolved by Campana-Paun, we derive an optimal dimension bound on the Hom scheme from a curve to $U$ among other applications.

The monodromy of families of subvarieties on abelian varieties

Motivated by recent work of Lawrence-Venkatesh and Lawrence-Sawin, we show that non-isotrivial families of subvarieties in abelian varieties have big monodromy when twisted by generic rank one local systems. While Lawrence-Sawin discuss the case of subvarieties of codimension one, our results hold for subvarieties of codimension at least half the dimension of the ambient abelian variety. For the proof, we use a combination of geometric arguments and representation theory to show that the Tannaka groups of intersection complexes on such subvarieties are big.

Parshin's method and the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture

In this short survey, we explain Parshin's proof of the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture, and show that it can be used to give an alternative proof of Xie-Yuan's recent resolution of the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture for projective varieties with empty special locus and admitting a finite morphism to a traceless abelian variety.

Boundedness in families with applications to arithmetic hyperbolicity

Motivated by conjectures of Demailly, Green-Griffiths, Lang, and Vojta, we show that several notions related to hyperbolicity behave similarly in families. We apply our results to show the persistence of arithmetic hyperbolicity along field extensions for projective normal surfaces with nonzero irregularity. These results rely on the mild boundedness of semi-abelian varieties. We also introduce and study the notion of pseudo-algebraic hyperbolicity which extends Demailly's notion of algebraic hyperbolicity for projective schemes.

Smooth hypersurfaces in abelian varieties over arithmetic rings

Let $A$ be an abelian scheme of dimension at least four over a $\mathbb{Z}$-finitely generated integral domain $R$ of characteristic zero, and let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $A$. We prove that the set of smooth hypersurfaces $D$ in $A$ representing $L$ is finite by showing that the moduli stack of such hypersurfaces has only finitely many $R$-points. We accomplish this by using level structures to interpolate finiteness results between this moduli stack and the stack of canonically polarized varieties.

Good reduction and cyclic covers

We prove finiteness results for sets of varieties over number fields with good reduction outside a given finite set of places using cyclic covers. We obtain a version of the Shafarevich conjecture for weighted projective surfaces, double covers of abelian varieties, and reduce the Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces to the case of hypersurfaces of high dimension. These are special cases of a general set-up for integral points on moduli stacks of cyclic covers, and our arithmetic results are achieved via a version of the Chevalley-Weil theorem for stacks.

On the distribution of rational points on ramified covers of abelian varieties

We prove new results on the distribution of rational points on ramified covers of abelian varieties over finitely generated fields $k$ of characteristic zero. For example, given a ramified cover $π: X \to A$, where $A$ is an abelian variety over $k$ with a dense set of $k$-rational points, we prove that there is a finite-index coset $C \subset A(k)$ such that $π(X(k))$ is disjoint from $C$. Our results do not seem to be in the range of other methods available at present; they confirm predictions coming from Lang's conjectures on rational points, and also go in the direction of an issue raised by Serre regarding possible applications to the Inverse Galois Problem. Finally, the conclusions of our work may be seen as a sharp version of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem for abelian varieties.
