Constraining Warm Inflation with the Cosmic Microwave Background

We discuss the spectrum of scalar density perturbations from warm inflation when the friction coefficient $Γ$ in the inflaton equation is dependent on the inflaton field. The spectral index of scalar fluctuations depends on a new slow-roll parameter constructed from $Γ$. A numerical integration of the perturbation equations is performed for a model of warm inflation and gives a good fit to the WMAP data for reasonable values of the model's parameters.

Warm inflation solution to the eta-problem

Warm inflationary dynamics is shown to satisfy both the slow-roll and density perturbation constraints for $m_ϕ \gg H$ or equivalently $η\gg 1$ and for inflaton field amplitudes much below the Planck scale, $<ϕ> < m_{pl}$. I start by reviewing the two types of inflation dynamics, isentropic or cold inflation and nonisentropic or warm inflation. In the former, inflation occurs without radiation production, whereas in the latter both radiation production and inflation occur concurrently. I then discuss recent, detailed, quantum field theory calculations showing that many generic inflation models, including hybrid inflation, which were believed only to have cold inflation regimes, in fact have regimes of both warm and cold inflation. These results dispel many foregone assumptions generally made up to now about inflation models and bring to the fore various elementary issues that must be addressed to do reliable calculations from inflation models. I also discuss density perturbations and observational consequences of warm inflation, especially related to WMAP. Finally I show that warm inflation has intrinsic features that make the ``eta problem'' nonexistent, and field amplitudes are below the Planck scale.

Scalar perturbation spectra from warm inflation

We present a numerical integration of the cosmological scalar perturbation equations in warm inflation. The initial conditions are provided by a discussion of the thermal fluctuations of an inflaton field and thermal radiation using a combination of thermal field theory and thermodynamics. The perturbation equations include the effects of a damping coefficient $Γ$ and a thermodynamic potential $V$. We give an analytic expression for the spectral index of scalar fluctuations in terms of a new slow-roll parameter constructed from $Γ$. A series of toy models, inspired by spontaneous symmetry breaking and a known form of the damping coefficient, lead to a spectrum with $n_s>1$ on large scales and $n_s<1$ on small scales.

Inflation and Generalized O'Raifeartaigh SUSY models

Thermal inflation usually requires an inflationary potential with nonrenormalizable operators (NROs). We demonstrate how O'Raifeartaigh models with or without NROs can provide thermal inflation and a solution to the moduli problem, as well as provide SUSY breaking. We then discuss a scenario where generalized O'Raifeartaigh potentials (with NROs) are included in a SUGRA where the supergravity and O'Raifeartaigh potentials provide negative and a positive contributions to the cosmological constant respectively. Tuning these contributions to nearly cancel can provide the present value of the dark energy.

Construction of a robust warm inflation mechanism

A dissipative mechanism is presented, which emerges in generic interacting quantum field systems and which leads to robust warm inflation. An explicit example is considered, where using typical parameter values, it is shown that considerable radiation can be produced during inflation. The extension of our results to expanding spacetime also is discussed.

Inflationary cosmology, a dissipative quantum field theory process

The current status of early universe cosmology can be summarized as precision, but inherently limited, data requiring explanation from precision and robust theory. Specifically inflation is presently the single concrete hope for solving the early universe problem, since it is generically realizable in quantum field theory, but treatment of interactions needs considerable attention. This talk reviews the importance and progress in this direction.

Asymptotic properties of turbulent magnetohydrodynamics

The dynamic renormalization group (RG) is used to study the large-distance and long-time limits of viscous and resistive incompressible magnetohydrodynamics subject to random forces and currents. The scale-dependent viscosity and magnetic resistivity are derived and used for carrying out RG-improved perturbation theory. This is applied to derive both the asymptotic scaling and the overall proportionality coefficients for both the velocity and magnetic field correlation functions as well as the kinetic and magnetic energy density spectral functions. The Kolmogorov, Iroshnikov-Kraichnan, as well as other energy spectra, formally can be obtained by suitable choice of injected noise, although the method limits the validity of these energy spectra only to the asymptotic regime . Injection of a random magnetic helicity is considered, its RG-improved spectral density derived, and its contribution to the velocity and magnetic field correlation functions determined. The RG scaling solutions are used to determine information at asymptotic scales about energy and helicity cascade directions and mixing between magnetic and kinetic energy. Some of the results found here also are shown to be valid for the Navier-Stokes hydrodynamic equation. The results have applicability to geomagnetism as well as cosmic magnetic fields at astrophysical and cosmological scales.

Affinity for Scalar Fields to Dissipate

The zero temperature effective equation of motion is derived for a scalar field interacting with other fields. For a broad range of cases, involving interaction with as few as one or two fields, dissipative regimes are found for the scalar field system. The zero temperature limit constitutes a baseline effect that will be prevalent in any general statistical state. Thus, the results found here provide strong evidence that dissipation is the norm not exception for an interacting scalar field system. For application to inflationary cosmology, this provides convincing evidence that warm inflation could be a natural dynamics once proper treatment of interactions is done. The results found here also may have applicability to entropy production during the chiral phase transition in heavy ion collision.

Inflationary Initial Conditions Consistent with Causality

The initial condition problem of inflation is examined from the perspective of both spacetime embedding and scalar field dynamics. The spacetime embedding problem is solved for arbitrary initial spatial curvature Omega, which generalizes previous works that primarily treat the flat case Omega=1. Scalar field dynamics that is consistent with the embedding constraints are examined, with the additional treatment of damping effects. The effects of inhomogeneities on the embedding problem also are considered. A category of initial conditions are identified that are not acausal and can develop into an inflationary regime.

Detection Limits for Super-Hubble Suppression of Causal Fluctuations

We investigate to what extent future microwave background experiments might be able to detect a suppression of fluctuation power on large scales in flat and open universe models. Such suppression would arise if fluctuations are generated by causal processes, and a measurement of a small suppression scale would be problematic for inflation models, but consistent with many defect models. More speculatively, a measurement of a suppression scale of the order of the present Hubble radius could provide independent evidence for a fine-tuned inflation model leading to a low-density universe. We find that, depending on the primordial power spectrum, a suppression scale modestly larger than the visible Horizon can be detected, but that the detectability drops very rapidly with increasing scale. For models with two periods of inflation, there is essentially no possibility of detecting a causal suppression scale.

Warm Inflation in the Adiabatic Regime- a Model, an Existence Proof for Inflationary Dynamics in Quantum Field Theory

Warm inflation is examined in a multi-field model. Solutions are obtained for expansion e-folds and scalar density perturbations. Nonequilibrium dynamics is restricted to a regime that is displaced only slightly from thermal equilibrium and in which all macroscopic motion is adiabatic. In such a regime, nonequilibrium dynamics is well defined, provided macroscopic motions that displace the thermal equilibrium state occur sufficiently slow. The solution has adjustable parameters that permit observational consistency with respect to expansion e-folds and density perturbations in the full adiabatic regime, thus insuring a valid solution regime. For particle physics, the model is nonstandard since it requires a large number of fields, $> 10^4$. A particle physics/string interpretation of the model and solutions is discussed, which can accommodate the large field number requirement.

A Tale of Two Hard Pomerons

Two mechanisms are examined for hard double pomeron exchange dijet production, the factorized model of Ingelman-Schlein and the nonfactorized model of lossless jet production which exhibits the Collins-Frankfurt-Strikman mechanism. Comparison between these two mechanisms are made of the total cross section, $E_T$-spectra, and mean rapidity spectra. For both mechanisms, several specific models are examined with the cuts of CDF, DØand representative cuts of LHC. Distinct qualitative differences are predicted by the two mechanisms for the CDF $y_+$-spectra and for the $E_T$-spectra for all three experimental cuts. The preliminary CDF and DØexperimental data for this process are interpreted in terms of these two mechanisms. The $y_+$-spectra of the CDF data is suggestive of domination by the factorized Ingelman-Schlein mechanism, whereas the DØdata shows no greater preference for either mechanism. An inconsistency is found amongst all the theoretical models in attempting to explain the ratio of the cross sections given by the data from these two experiments.

Inverting the Sachs-Wolfe Formula: an Inverse Problem Arising in Early-Universe Cosmology

The (ordinary) Sachs-Wolfe effect relates primordial matter perturbations to the temperature variations $δT/T$ in the cosmic microwave background radiation; $δT/T$ can be observed in all directions around us. A standard but idealised model of this effect leads to an infinite set of moment-like equations: the integral of $P(k) j_\ell^2(ky)$ with respect to k ($0<k<\infty$) is equal to a given constant, $C_\ell$, for $\ell=0,1,2,...$. Here, P is the power spectrum of the primordial density variations, $j_\ell$ is a spherical Bessel function and y is a positive constant. It is shown how to solve these equations exactly for ~$P(k)$. The same solution can be recovered, in principle, if the first ~m equations are discarded. Comparisons with classical moment problems (where $j_\ell^2(ky)$ is replaced by $k^\ell$) are made.

The Interaction Structure and Cosmological Relevance of Mass Scales in String Motivated Supersymmetric Theories

A string motivated, N=1 global supersymmetric, general Lagrangian is obtained that represents an inflaton interacting with the modes of a string. Focus is placed on the Lagrangian's relevance to warm inflation, which is a cosmology based on dissipative dynamics. Several interaction schemes are identified from the general Lagrangian that may have interesting consequences for dissipative dynamics. Distributed-mass-models, which have been shown to solve the horizon problem within a warm inflation regime, are identified in the general Lagrangian.
