Mean field approximations for short range four body interactions at $ν=3/5$

Trial wavefunctions like the Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states which minimize short range multibody interactions are candidate states for describing the fractional quantum Hall effects at filling factors $ν= 1/2$ and $ν= 2/5$ in the second Landau level. These trial wavefunctions are unique zero energy states of three body and four body interaction Hamiltonians respectively but are not close to the ground states of the Coulomb interaction. Previous studies using extensive parameter scans have found optimal two body interactions that produce states close to these. Here we focus on short ranged four body interaction and study two mean field approximations that reduce the four body interactions to two body interactions by replacing composite operators with their incompressible ground state expectation values. We present the results for pseudopotentials of these approximate interactions. Comparison of finite system spectra of the four body and the approximate interactions at filling fraction $ν=3/5$ show that these approximations produce good effective descriptions of the low energy structure of the four body ineraction Hamiltonian. The approach also independently reproduces the optimal two body interaction inferred from parameter scans. We also show that for $n=3$, but not for $n=4$, the mean field approximations of the $n$-body interaction is equivalent to particle hole symmetrization of the interaction.

Neutral Fermion Excitations in the Moore-Read state at ν=5/2

We present evidence supporting the weakly paired Moore-Read phase in the half-filled second Landau level, focusing on some of the qualitative features of its excitations. Based on numerical studies, we show that systems with odd particle number at the flux $N_ϕ=2N-3$ can be interpreted as a neutral fermion mode of one unpaired fermion, which is gapped. The mode is found to have two distinct minima, providing a signature that could be observed by photoluminescence. In the presence of two quasiparticles the same neutral fermion excitation is shown to be gapless, confirming expectations for non-Abelian statistics of the Ising model with degenerate fusion channels 1 and $ψ$.

Unpaired composite fermion, topological exciton, and zero mode

The paired state of composite fermions is expected to support two kinds of excitations: vortices and unpaired composite fermions. We construct an explicit microscopic description of the unpaired composite fermions, which we demonstrate to be accurate for a 3-body model interaction, and, possibly, adiabatically connected to the Coulomb solution. This understanding reveals that an unpaired composite fermion carries with it a charge-neutral "topological" exciton, which, in turn, helps provide microscopic insight into the origin of zero modes, fusion rules, and energetics.

Composite fermion dynamics in half-filled Landau levels of graphene

We report on exact-diagonalization studies of correlated many-electron states in the half-filled Landau levels of graphene, including pseudospin (valley) degeneracy. We demonstrate that the polarized Fermi sea of non-interacting composite fermions remains stable against a pairing transition in the lowest two Landau levels. However, it undergoes spontaneous depolarization, which is unprotected owing to the lack of single-particle pseudospin splitting. These results suggest the absence of the Pfaffian phase in graphene.

Fractional quantum Hall effect arising from repulsive three body interaction

We consider a collection of fermions in a strong magnetic field coupled by a purely three body repulsive interaction, and predict the formation of composite fermions, leading to a remarkably rich phase diagram containing a host of fractional quantum Hall states, a composite fermion Fermi sea, and a pairing transition. This is entirely unexpected, because the appearance of composite fermions and fractional quantum Hall effect is ordinarily thought to be a result of strong two-body repulsion. Recent theoretical and experimental breakthroughs in ultra-cold atoms and molecules have facilitated the realization of such a system, where this physics can be tested.

Landau level mixing and the emergence of Pfaffian excitations for the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect

We report on exact diagonalization studies for fully spin polarized 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect, incorporating Landau level mixing through the Bishara-Nayak effective interaction. We find that there is an experimentally accessible region in the phase diagram where the Pfaffian model accurately describes not only the ground state but also the neutral and charged excitations. These results are consistent with the observed persistence of the 5/2 Hall effect down to very low magnetic fields; they are also relevant to the experimental attempts to detect nonabelian braid statistics.

Search for electron liquids with non-Abelian quasiparticles

We use exact numerical diagonalization in the search of fractional quantum Hall states with non-Abelian quasiparticle statistics. For the (most promising) states in a partially filled second Landau level, the search is narrowed to the range of filling factors $7/3 <ν_e<8/3$. In this range, the analysis of energy spectra and correlation functions, calculated including finite width and Landau level mixing, supports the prominent non-Abelian candidates at $ν_e=5/2$ (paired Moore--Read "pfafian" state) and 12/5 (clustered Read--Rezayi "parafermion" state). Outside of this range, the noninteracting composite fermion model with four attached flux quanta is validated, yielding the family of quantum liquids with fractional, but Abelian statistics. The borderline $ν_e=7/3$ state is shown to be adiabatically connected to the Laughlin liquid, but its short-range correlations are significantly different.

Skyrmions in the Moore-Read state at nu=5/2

We study charged excitations of the non-abelian Moore-Read liquid at filling factor nu=5/2, allowing for spin depolarization. Using a combination of numerical studies, and taking account of non-zero well widths, we find that at sufficiently low Zeeman energy it is energetically favourable for charge e/4 quasiholes to bind into "skyrmions" of charge e/2. We show that skyrmion formation is further promoted by disorder, and argue that this can lead to a depolarized nu=5/2 ground state in realistic experimental situations. We comment on the consequences for the activated transport.

Transition from Abelian to non-Abelian quantum liquids in the second Landau level

The search for non-Abelian quantum Hall states in the second Landau level is narrowed to the range of filling factors 7/3<ν_e<8/3. In this range, the analysis of energy spectra and correlation functions, calculated including finite width and Landau level mixing, supports the prominent non-Abelian candidates at ν_e=5/2 (Moore--Read) and 12/5 (Read--Rezayi). Outside of it, the four-flux noninteracting composite fermion model is validated. The borderline ν_e=7/3 state is adiabatically connected to the Laughlin liquid, but its short-range correlations and charge excitations are different.

Spin phase diagram of the nu_e=4/11 composite fermion liquid

Spin polarization of the "second generation" nu_e=4/11 fractional quantum Hall state (corresponding to an incompressible liquid in a one-third-filled composite fermion Landau level) is studied by exact diagonalization. Spin phase diagram is determined for GaAs structures of different width and electron concentration. Transition between the polarized and partially unpolarized states with distinct composite fermion correlations is predicted for realistic parameters.

Magneto-optical probing of weak disorder in a two-dimensional hole gas

In two-beam magneto-photoluminescence spectra of a two-dimensional valence hole gas we identify the three-level energy spectrum of a free positive trion with a field-induced singlet-triplet transition. The recombination spectrum of acceptor-bound trions is also detected, including a cyclotron replica corresponding to the hole shake-up process. The emergence of a shake-up peak at low temperature is shown to be a sensitive probe of the presence of a small number of impurities inside the high-mobility quantum well, and its relative position is directly related to the hole cyclotron mass.

Landau level mixing in the nu=5/2 fractional quantum Hall state

The nu=5/2 fractional quantum Hall state is studied numerically, directly including the effects of electron scattering between neighboring Landau levels. Significant reduction of the excitation gap caused by the LL mixing explains the discrepancy between earlier calculations and experiments. On the other hand, LL mixing also considerably reduces overlaps with the Moore--Read wavefunction, raising a question of the actual realization of nonabelian quasiparticles in present experiments.

Effect of free carriers and impurities on density of states and optical spectra of two-dimensional magneto-excitons

Density of states (DOS) and absorption spectrum of weakly doped, narrow quantum wells in high magnetic fields are calculated by realistic exact diagonalization. The systems containing an electron--hole pair with and without an additional, second electron are compared. In DOS, the exciton--electron interaction is shown to fill the gaps between Landau levels and to yield additional discrete peaks corresponding to bound trion states. In absorption, interaction with the additional free electron causes no shift or renormalization of main, excitonic peaks. However, it results in additional, weaker peaks associated with bound trions in the lowest or higher Landau levels. The calculation is supplemented with experimental photoluminescence and photoluminescence-excitation studies of two-dimensional holes and electrons in high magnetic fields.

Exact-diagonalization studies of trion energy spectra in high magnetic fields

Binding energies of negative and positive trions in doped GaAs quantum wells in high magnetic fields are studied by exact numerical diagonalization in spherical geometry. Compared to earlier calculations, finite width of the quantum well and its asymmetry caused by one-sided doping are both fully taken into account by using self-consistent subband wave functions in the integration of Coulomb matrix elements, and by inclusion of higher subbands along with several Landau levels in the Hilbert space. Detailed analysis of the accuracy and convergence of the exact diagonalization scheme is presented, including dependence on Landau level and subband mixing, sensitivity to the (not well known) single-particle spectrum in the valence band, and the estimate of finite-size errors. The main results are the exciton dispersion and trion binding energy spectrum calculated as a function of the magnetic field, quantum well width, electron concentration, and the presence of an ionized impurity. As a complementary approach, a combination of the exact diagonalization in the quantum well plane and the variational calculation in the normal direction is used as well.

Second Generation of Moore-Read Quasiholes in a Composite Fermion Liquid

Two- and three-body correlations of incompressible quantum liquids are studied numerically. Pairing of composite fermions (CFs) in the 1/3-filled second CF Landau level is found at nu_e=4/11. It is explained by reduced short-range repulsion due to ring-like single-particle charge distribution. Although Moore-Read state of CFs is unstable in the 1/2-filled second CF level, condensation of its quasiholes is a possible origin of incompressibility at nu_e=4/11. Electron pairing occurs at nu_e=7/3 and 13/3, but with different pair-pair correlations. Signatures of triplets are found at higher fillings.

Quasiexcitons in Incompressible Quantum Liquids

Photoluminescence (PL) has been used to study two-dimensional incompressible electron liquids in high magnetic fields for nearly two decades. However, some of the observed anomalies coincident with the fractional quantum Hall effect are still unexplained. We show that emission in these systems occurs from fractionally charged "quasiexciton" states formed from trions correlated with the surrounding electrons. Their binding and recombination depend on the state of both the electron liquid and the involved trion, predicting discontinuities in PL and sensitivity to sample parameters.

Pair-distribution functions of correlated composite fermions

Pair-distribution functions g(r) of Laughlin quasielectrons (composite fermions in their second Landau level) are calculated in the fractional quantum Hall states at electron filling factors nu_e=4/11 and 3/8. A shoulder in g(r) is found, supporting the idea of cluster formation. The intra- and inter-cluster contributions to g(r) are identified, largely independent of nu_e. The average cluster sizes are estimated; pairs and triplets of quasielectrons are suggested at nu_e=4/11 and 3/8, respectively.

Three-body correlations and finite-size effects in the Moore--Read states on a sphere

Two- and three-body correlations in partially filled degenerate fermion shells are studied numerically for various interactions between the particles. Three distinct correlation regimes are defined, depending on the short-range behavior of the pair pseudopotential. For pseudopotentials similar to those of electrons in the first excited Landau level, correlations at half-filling have a simple three-body form consisting of the maximum avoidance of the triplet state with the smallest relative angular momentum R_3=3. In analogy to the superharmonic criterion for Laughlin two-body correlations, their occurrence is related to the form of the three-body pseudopotential at short range. The spectra of a model three-body repulsion are calculated, and the zero-energy Moore--Read ground state, its +-e/4-charged quasiparticles, and the magnetoroton and pair-breaking bands are all identified. The quasiparticles are correctly described by a composite fermion model appropriate for Halperin's p-type pairing with Laughlin correlations between the pairs. However, the Moore--Read ground state, and specially its excitations, have small overlaps with the corresponding Coulomb eigenstates when calculated on a sphere. The reason lies in surface curvature which affects the form of pair pseudopotential for which the "R_3>3" three-body correlations occur. In finite systems, such pseudopotential must be slightly superharmonic at short range (different from Coulomb pseudopotential). However, the connection with the three-body pseudopotential is less size-dependent, suggesting that the Moore--Read state and its excitations are a more accurate description for experimental nu=5/2 states than could be expected from previous calculations.
