Two-Dimensional Electron-Hole Systems in a Strong Magnetic Field

Two-dimensional systems containing Ne electrons and Nh holes (Ne>Nh) strongly correlated through Coulomb interactions in the presence of a large magnetic field are studied by exact numerical diagonalization. Low lying states are found to contain neutral (X0) and negatively charged (X-) excitons and higher charged exciton complexes (Xk-, a bound state of k neutral excitons and an electron). Representing these states in terms of angular momenta and binding energies of the different exciton complexes, and the pseudopotentials describing their interactions with electrons and with one another, permits numerical studies of systems that are too large to investigate in terms of individual electrons and holes. Laughlin incompressible ground states of such a multi-component plasma are found. A generalized composite Fermion picture based on Laughlin type correlations is proposed. It is shown to correctly predict the lowest band of angular momentum multiplets for different charge configurations of the system for any value of the magnetic field.

Composite Fermions and the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect: Essential Role of the Pseudopotential

The mean field (MF) composite Fermion (CF) picture successfully predicts the band of low lying angular momentum multiplets of fractional quantum Hall systems for any value of the magnetic field. This success cannot be attributed to a cancellation between Coulomb and Chern--Simons interactions between fluctuations beyond the mean field. It results instead from the short range behavior of the Coulomb pseudopotential in the lowest Landau level (LL). The class of pseudopotentials for which the MFCF picture is successful can be defined, and used to explain the success or failure of the picture in different cases (e.g. excited LL's, charged magneto-excitons, and Laughlin quasiparticles in a CF hierarchy picture).

Composite Fermion Picture for Multi-Component Plasmas in 2D Electron-Hole Systems in a Strong Magnetic Field

Low lying states of a 2D electron-hole system contain electrons and one or more types of charged excitonic complexes. Binding energies and angular momenta of these excitonic ions, and the pseudopotentials describing their interactions with electrons and with one another are obtained from numerical studies of small systems. Incompressible fluid ground states of such multi-component plasmas are found in exact numerical diagonalizations. A generalized composite Fermion (CF) picture involving Chern--Simons charges and fluxes of different types is proposed and shown to predict the low lying states at any value of the magnetic field.

Composite Fermions and the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

The mean field (MF) composite Fermion (CF) picture successfully predicts low lying states of fractional quantum Hall systems. This success cannot be attributed to a cancellation between Coulomb and Chern-Simons interactions beyond the mean field and solely depends on the short range (SR) of the Coulomb pseudopotential in the lowest Landau level (LL). The class of pseudopotentials for which the MFCF picture can be applied is defined. The success or failure of the MFCF picture in various systems (electrons in excited LL's, Laughlin quasiparticles, charged magneto-excitons) is explained.

Two-Dimensional Electron-Hole Systems in a Strong Magnetic Field: Composite Fermion Picture for Multi-Component Plasmas

Electron-hole systems on a Haldane sphere are studied by exact numerical diagonalization. Low lying states contain one or more types of bound charged excitonic complexes Xk-, interacting through appropriate pseudopotentials. Incompressible ground states of such multi-component plasmas are found. A generalized multi-component Laughlin wavefunction and composite Fermion picture are shown to predict the low lying states of an electron-hole gas at any value of the magnetic field.

Composite Fermion Approach to the Quantum Hall Hierarchy: When it Works and Why

The mean field composite Fermion (MFCF) picture has been qualitatively successful when applied to electrons (or holes) in the lowest Landau level. Because the energy scales associated with Coulomb interactions and with Chern-Simons gauge field interactions are different, there is no rigorous justification of the qualitative success of the MFCF picture. Here we show that what the MFCF picture does is to select from all the allowed angular momentum (L) multiplets of N electrons on a sphere, a subset with smaller values of L. For this subset, the coefficients of fractional parentage for pair states with small relative angular momentum $R$ (and therefore large repulsion) either vanish or they are small. This set of states forms the lowest energy sector of the spectrum.

Hund's Rule for Monopole Harmonics, or Why the Composite Fermion Picture Works

The success of the mean field composite Fermion (MFCF) picture in predicting the lowest energy band of angular momentum multiplets in fractional quantum Hall systems cannot be found in a cancellation between the Coulomb and Chern--Simons interactions beyond the mean field, due to their totally different energy scales. We show that the MFCF approximation can be regarded as a kind of semi-empirical Hund's rule for monopole harmonics. The plausibility of the rule is easily established, but rigorous proof relies on comparison with detailed numerical calculations.

Incompressible states of negatively charged magneto-excitons

We study the system of up to four negatively charged magneto-excitons (X-'s) in the spherical geometry, using the exact-diagonalization techniques. At low energies, X-'s are bound and behave like charged particles without internal dynamics. The pseudopotential describing X-:X- scattering is almost identical to that of electrons and the low-lying few X- states correspond to the few-electron states. The total angular momentum of the ground state depends on the effective filling factor nu and vanishes at its special values. The analogs to the Laughlin nu=1/3 state and the Jain nu=2/5 state of electrons are found. The X- system is predicted to exhibit the fractional quantum Hall effect.

Excitonic Ions and Pseudopotentials in 2D Systems: Evidence for Quantum Hall States of an X- Gas

Systems of up to twelve electrons and six holes on the Haldane sphere are studied by exact numerical diagonalization. The low lying states of the system involve bound excitonic complexes such as (X^n)-. The angular momenta of these complexes and the pseudopotentials describing their interaction are determined. The similarity to the electron pseudopotential suggests the possibility of incompressible ground states of a gas of X- ions for nu<=1/3. The nu=1/3 state of three X-'s is found.
