Partition function of free conformal higher spin theory

We compute the canonical partition function Z of non-interacting conformal higher spin (CHS) theory viewed as a collection of free spin s CFT's in R^d. We discuss in detail the 4-dimensional case (where s=1 is the standard Maxwell vector, s=2 is the Weyl graviton, etc.), but also present a generalization for all even dimensions d. Z may be found by counting the numbers of conformal operators and their descendants (modulo gauge identities and equations of motion) weighted by scaling dimensions. This conformal operator counting method requires a careful analysis of the structure of characters of relevant (conserved current, shadow field and conformal Killing tensor) representations of the conformal algebra so(d,2). There is also a close relation to massless higher spin partition functions with alternative boundary conditions in AdS_{d+1}. The same partition function Z may also be computed from the CHS path integral on a curved S^1 x S^{d-1} background. This allows us to determine a simple factorized form of the CHS kinetic operator on this conformally flat background. Summing the individual conformal spin contributions Z_s over all spins we obtain the total partition function of the CHS theory. We also find the corresponding Casimir energy and show that it vanishes if one uses the same regularization prescription that implies the cancellation of the total conformal anomaly a-coefficient. This happens to be true in all even dimensions d >= 2.

Semiclassical equivalence of Green-Schwarz and Pure-Spinor/Hybrid formulations of superstrings in AdS(5) x S(5) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6)

We demonstrate the equivalence between the worldsheet one-loop partition functions computed near classical string solutions in the Green-Schwarz and in the pure-spinor formulations of superstrings in AdS(5) x S(5). While their bosonic sectors are the same in the conformal gauge, their fermionic sectors superficially appear to be very different (first vs second derivative kinetic terms, presence vs absence of fermionic gauge symmetry). Still, we show that the quadratic fluctuation spectrum of sixteen fermionic modes of the pure-spinor formulation is the same as in the Green-Schwarz superstring and the contribution of the extra "massless" fermionic modes cancels against that of the pure-spinor ghosts. We also provide evidence for a similar semiclassical equivalence between the Green-Schwarz and the hybrid formulations of superstrings in AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) by studying several particular examples of string solutions.

More about "short" spinning quantum strings

We continue investigation of the spectrum of semiclassical quantum strings in AdS5 x S5 on the examples of folded (S,J) string (with spin S in AdS5 and orbital momentum J in S5) dual to an sl(2) sector state in gauge theory and its (J',J) counterpart with spin J' in S5 dual to an su(2) sector state. We study the limits of small spins and large J at weak and strong coupling, pointing out that terms linear in spins provide a generalization of "protected" coefficients in the energy that are given by finite polynomials in 't Hooft coupling λ (or square of string tension) for any value of λ. We propose an expression for the coefficient of the term linear in spin J' in the (J',J) string energy which should be the su(2) sector counterpart of the "slope function" in the sl(2) sector suggested by Basso in arXiv:1109.3154.

On strong-coupling correlation functions of circular Wilson loops and local operators

Motivated by the problem of understanding 3-point correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators in N =4 super Yang-Mills theory we consider correlators involving Wilson loops and a "light" operator with fixed quantum numbers. At leading order in the strong coupling expansion such correlators are given by the "light" vertex operator evaluated on a semiclassical string world surface ending on the corresponding loops at the boundary of AdS_5 x S^5. We study in detail the example of a correlator of two concentric circular Wilson loops and a dilaton vertex operator. The resulting expression is given by an integral of combinations of elliptic functions and can be computed analytically in some special limits. We also consider a generalization of the minimal surface ending on two circles to the case of non-zero angular momentum J in S^5 and discuss a special limit when one of the Wilson loops is effectively replaced by a "heavy" operator with charge J.

Leading quantum correction to energy of "short" spiky strings

We consider semiclassical quantization of spiky strings spinning in AdS_3 part of AdS_5 X S^5 using integrability-based (algebraic curve) method. In the "short string" (small spin) limit the expansion of string energy starts with its flat-space expression. We compute the leading quantum string correction to "short" spiky string energy and find the explicit form of the corresponding 1-loop coefficient a_01. It turns out to be rational and expressed in terms of the harmonic sums as functions of the number n of spikes. In the special case of n=2 when the spiky string reduces to the single-folded spinning string the coefficient a_01 takes the value (-1/4) found in arXiv:1102.1040. We also consider a similar computation for the m-folded string and more general spiky string with an extra "winding" number, finding similar expressions for a_01. These results may be useful for a description of energies of higher excited states in the quantum AdS_5 X S^5 string spectrum, generalizing earlier discussions of the string counterparts of the Konishi operator.

Quantum spinning strings in AdS_4 x CP^3: testing the Bethe Ansatz proposal

Recently, an asymptotic Bethe Ansatz that is claimed to describe anomalous dimensions of "long" operators in the planar N=6 supersymmetric three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theory dual to quantum superstrings in AdS_4 x CP^3 was proposed. It initially passed a few consistency checks but subsequent direct comparison to one-loop string-theory computations created some controversy. Here we suggest a resolution by pointing out that, contrary to the initial assumption based on the algebraic curve considerations, the central interpolating function h(λ) entering the BMN or magnon dispersion relation receives a non-zero one-loop correction in the natural string-theory computational scheme. We consider a basic example which has already played a key role in the AdS_5 x S^5 case: a rigid circular string stretched in both AdS_4 and along an S^1 of CP^3 and carrying two spins. Computing the leading one-loop quantum correction to its energy allows us to fix the constant one-loop term in h(λ) and also to suggest how one may establish a correspondence with the Bethe Ansatz proposal, including the non-trivial one-loop phase factor. We discuss some problems which remain in trying to match a part of world-sheet contributions (sensitive to compactness of the string direction) and their Bethe Ansatz counterparts.

On T-Duality and Integrability for Strings on AdS Backgrounds

We discuss an interplay between T-duality and integrability for certain classical non-linear sigma models. In particular, we consider strings on the AdS_5 x S^5 background and perform T-duality along the four isometry directions of AdS_5 in the Poincare patch. The T-dual of the AdS_5 sigma model is again a sigma model on an AdS_5 space. This classical T-duality relation was used in the recently uncovered connection between light-like Wilson loops and MHV gluon scattering amplitudes in the strong coupling limit of the AdS/CFT duality. We show that the explicit coordinate dependence along the T-duality directions of the associated Lax connection (flat current) can be eliminated by means of a field dependent gauge transformation. As a result, the gauge equivalent Lax connection can easily be T-dualized, i.e. written in terms of the dual set of isometric coordinates. The T-dual Lax connection can be used for the derivation of infinitely many conserved charges in the T-dual model. Our construction implies that local (Noether) charges of the original model are mapped to non-local charges of the T-dual model and vice versa.

Solvable models of strings in homogeneous plane wave backgrounds

We solve closed string theory in all regular homogeneous plane-wave backgrounds with homogeneous NS three-form field strength and a dilaton. The parameters of the model are constant symmetric and anti-symmetric matrices k_{ij} and f_{ij} associated with the metric, and a constant anti-symmetric matrix h_{ij} associated with the NS field strength. In the light-cone gauge the rotation parameters f_{ij} have a natural interpretation as a constant magnetic field. This is a generalisation of the standard Landau problem with oscillator energies now being non-trivial functions of the parameters f_{ij} and k_{ij}. We develop a general procedure for solving linear but non-diagonal equations for string coordinates, and determine the corresponding oscillator frequencies, the light-cone Hamiltonian and level matching condition. We investigate the resulting string spectrum in detail in the four-dimensional case and compare the results with previously studied examples. Throughout we will find that the presence of the rotation parameter f_{ij} can lead to certain unusual and unexpected features of the string spectrum like new massless states at non-zero string levels, stabilisation of otherwise unstable (tachyonic) modes, and discrete but not positive definite string oscillator spectra.

String Corrections to the Holographic RG Flow of Supersymmetric SU(N) x SU(N+M) Gauge Theory

We study leading string corrections to the type IIB supergravity solution dual to the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric $SU(N+M)\times SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled to bifundamental chiral superfields $A_i, B_j$, $i,j=1,2$. This solution was found in hep-th/0007191, and its asymptotic form describing logarithmic RG flow was constructed in hep-th/0002159. The leading tree-level string correction to the type IIB string effective action is represented by the invariant of the form $\a'{}^3 (R^4 + ...)$. Since the background contains 3-form field strengths, we need to know parts of this invariant that depend on them. By analyzing the 5-point superstring scattering amplitudes we show that only a few specific $R^3 (H_3)^2$ and $R^3 (F_3)^2$ terms are present in the effective action. Their contribution to the holographic RG flow turns out to be of the same order as of the $R^4$ terms. Using this fact we show that it is possible to have agreement between the $α'$-corrected radial dependence of the supergravity fields and the RG flow dictated by the NSVZ beta functions in field theory. The agreement with field theory requires that the anomalous dimension of the operators $\Tr (A_i B_j)$ is corrected by a term of order $(M/N)^4 λ^{-1/2}$ from its value $-{1 \over 2} $ found for M=0 ($λ$ is the appropriate 't Hooft coupling which is assumed to be strong).

Non-abelian 4-d black holes, wrapped 5-branes, and their dual descriptions

We study extremal and non-extremal generalizations of the regular non-abelian monopole solution of hep-th/9707176, interpreted in hep-th/0007018 as 5-branes wrapped on a shrinking S^2. Naively, the low energy dynamics is pure N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills. However, our results suggest that the scale of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in the Yang-Mills theory actually coincides with the Hagedorn temperature of the little string theory. We find solutions with regular horizons and arbitrarily high Hawking temperature. Chiral symmetry is restored at high energy density, corresponding to large black holes. But the entropy of the black hole solutions decreases as one proceeds to higher temperatures, indicating that there is a thermodynamic instability and that the canonical ensemble is ill-defined. For certain limits of the black hole solutions, we exhibit explicit non-linear sigma models involving a linear dilaton. In other limits we find extremal non-BPS solutions which may have some relevance to string cosmology.

Asymptotic Freedom and Infrared Behavior in the Type 0 String Approach to Gauge Theory

In a recent paper we considered the type 0 string theories, obtained from the ten-dimensional closed NSR string by a GSO projection which excludes space-time fermions, and studied the low-energy dynamics of N coincident D-branes. This led us to conjecture that the four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to 6 adjoint massless scalars is dual to a background of type 0 theory carrying N units of R-R 5-form flux and involving a tachyon condensate. The tachyon background leads to a ``soft breaking'' of conformal invariance, and we derived the corresponding renormalization group equation. Minahan has subsequently found its asymptotic solution for weak coupling and showed that the coupling exhibits logarithmic flow, as expected from the asymptotic freedom of the dual gauge theory. We study this solution in more detail and identify the effect of the 2-loop beta function. We also demonstrate the existence of a fixed point at infinite coupling. Just like the fixed point at zero coupling, it is characterized by the AdS_5\times S^5 Einstein frame metric. We argue that there is a RG trajectory extending all the way from the zero coupling fixed point in the UV to the infinite coupling fixed point in the IR.

Coupling Constant Dependence in the Thermodynamics of N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

The free energy of the maximally supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory at temperature T is expected to scale, in the large N limit, as N^2 T^4 times a function of the 't Hooft coupling, f(g_{YM}^2 N). In the strong coupling limit the free energy has been deduced from the near-extremal 3-brane geometry, and its normalization has turned out to be 3/4 times that found in the weak coupling limit. In this paper we calculate the leading correction to this result in inverse powers of the coupling, which originates from the R^4 terms in the tree level effective action of type IIB string theory. The correction to 3/4 is positive and of order (g_{YM}^2 N)^{-3/2}. Thus, f(g_{YM}^2 N) increases as the 't Hooft coupling is decreased, in accordance with the expectation that it should be approaching 1 in the weak coupling limit. We also discuss similar corrections for other conformal theories describing coincident branes. In particular, we suggest that the coupling-independence of the near extremal entropy for D1-branes bound to D5-branes is related to the vanishing of the Weyl tensor of AdS_3\times S^3.

Intermediate Scalars and the Effective String Model of Black Holes

We consider five-dimensional black holes modeled by D-strings bound to D5-branes, with momentum along the D-strings. We study the greybody factors for the non-minimally coupled scalars which originate from the gravitons and R-R antisymmetric tensor particles polarized along the 5-brane, with one index along the string and the other transverse to the string. These scalars, which we call intermediate, couple to the black holes differently from the minimal and the fixed scalars which were studied previously. Analysis of their fluctuations around the black hole reveals a surprising mixing between these NS-NS and R-R scalars. We disentangle this mixing and obtain two decoupled scalar equations. These equations have some new features, and we are able to calculate the greybody factors only in certain limits. The results agree with corresponding calculations in the effective string model provided one of the intermediate scalars couples to an operator of dimension (1,2), while the other to an operator of dimension (2,1). Thus, the intermediate scalars are sensitive probes of the chiral operators in the effective string action.

Solitonic Strings and BPS Saturated Dyonic Black Holes

We consider a six-dimensional solitonic string solution described by a conformal chiral null model with non-trivial $N=4$ superconformal transverse part. It can be interpreted as a five-dimensional dyonic solitonic string wound around a compact fifth dimension. The conformal model is regular with the short-distance (`throat') region equivalent to a WZW theory. At distances larger than the compactification scale the solitonic string reduces to a dyonic static spherically-symmetric black hole of toroidally compactified heterotic string. The new four-dimensional solution is parameterised by five charges, saturates the Bogomol'nyi bound and has nontrivial dilaton-axion field and moduli fields of two-torus. When acted by combined T- and S-duality transformations it serves as a generating solution for all the static spherically-symmetric BPS-saturated configurations of the low-energy heterotic string theory compactified on six-torus. Solutions with regular horizons have the global space-time structure of extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black holes with the non-zero thermodynamic entropy which depends only on conserved (quantised) charge vectors. The independence of the thermodynamic entropy on moduli and axion-dilaton couplings strongly suggests that it should have a microscopic interpretation as counting degeneracy of underlying string configurations. This interpretation is supported by arguments based on the corresponding six-dimensional conformal field theory. The expression for the level of the WZW theory describing the throat region implies a renormalisation of the string tension by a product of magnetic charges, thus relating the entropy and the number of oscillations of the solitonic string in compact directions.
