Collective Phase Chaos in the Dynamics of Interacting Oscillator Ensembles

We study chaotic behavior of order parameters in two coupled ensembles of self-sustained oscillators. Coupling within each of these ensembles is switched on and off alternately, while the mutual interaction between these two subsystems is arranged through quadratic nonlinear coupling. We show numerically that in the course of alternating Kuramoto transitions to synchrony and back to asynchrony, the exchange of excitations between two subpopulations proceeds in such a way that their collective phases are governed by an expanding circle map similar to the Bernoulli map. We perform the Lyapunov analysis of the dynamics and discuss finite-size effects.

Attractor of Smale - Williams type in an autonomous time-delay system

We propose an example of smooth autonomous system governed by differential delay equation manifesting chaotic dynamics apparently associated with hyperbolic attractor of Smale - Williams type. The general idea is to depart from a system generating successive pulses of oscillations, each of which gives rise to the next one with transformation of the phase in accordance with chaotic Bernoulli map. From mathematical point of view, it is an infinite-dimensional system due to presence of the time delay. Nevertheless, the material we present gives a foundation to assert that the model delivers an example of a small-dimensional hyperbolic strange attractor, embedded in the infinite-dimensional phase space.

Phase resetting of collective rhythm in ensembles of oscillators

Phase resetting curves characterize the way a system with a collective periodic behavior responds to perturbations. We consider globally coupled ensembles of Sakaguchi-Kuramoto oscillators, and use the Ott-Antonsen theory of ensemble evolution to derive the analytical phase resetting equations. We show the final phase reset value to be composed of two parts: an immediate phase reset directly caused by the perturbation, and the dynamical phase reset resulting from the relaxation of the perturbed system back to its dynamical equilibrium. Analytical, semi-analytical and numerical approximations of the final phase resetting curve are constructed. We support our findings with extensive numerical evidence involving identical and non-identical oscillators. The validity of our theory is discussed in the context of large ensembles approximating the thermodynamic limit.

Scaling of energy spreading in strongly nonlinear disordered lattices

To characterize a destruction of Anderson localization by nonlinearity, we study the spreading behavior of initially localized states in disordered, strongly nonlinear lattices. Due to chaotic nonlinear interaction of localized linear or nonlinear modes, energy spreads nearly subdiffusively. Based on a phenomenological description by virtue of a nonlinear diffusion equation we establish a one-parameter scaling relation between the velocity of spreading and the density, which is confirmed numerically. From this scaling it follows that for very low densities the spreading slows down compared to the pure power law.

Effective phase dynamics of noise-induced oscillations in excitable systems

We develop an effective description of noise-induced oscillations based on deterministic phase dynamics. The phase equation is constructed to exhibit correct frequency and distribution density of noise-induced oscillations. In the simplest one-dimensional case the effective phase equation is obtained analytically, whereas for more complex situations a simple method of data processing is suggested. As an application an effective coupling function is constructed that quantitatively describes periodically forced noise-induced oscillations.

Scaling Properties of Weak Chaos in Nonlinear Disordered Lattices

The Discrete Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential in one dimension is studied as a dynamical system. It is characterized by the length, the strength of the random potential and by the field density that determines the effect of nonlinearity. The probability of the system to be regular is established numerically and found to be a scaling function. This property is used to calculate the asymptotic properties of the system in regimes beyond our computational power.

Effective phase description of noise-perturbed and noise-induced oscillations

An effective description of a general class of stochastic phase oscillators is presented. For this, the effective phase velocity is defined either by invariant probability density or via first passage times. While the first approach exhibits correct frequency and distribution density, the second one yields proper phase resetting curves. Their discrepancy is most pronounced for noise-induced oscillations and is related to non-monotonicity of the phase fluctuations.

Superexponential droplet fractalization as a hierarchical formation of dissipative compactons

We study the dynamics of a thin film over a substrate heated from below in a framework of a strongly nonlinear one-dimensional Cahn-Hillard equation. The evolution leads to a fractalization into smaller and smaller scales. We demonstrate that a primitive element in the appearing hierarchical structure is a dissipative compacton. Both direct simulations and the analysis of a self-similar solution show that the compactons appear at superexponentially decreasing scales, what means vanishing dimension of the fractal.

Partially integrable dynamics of ensembles of nonidentical oscillators

We consider ensembles of sine-coupled phase oscillators consisting of subpopulations of identical units, with a general heterogeneous coupling between subpopulations. Using the Watanabe-Strogatz ansatz we reduce the dynamics of the ensemble to a relatively small number of dynamical variables plus microscopic constants of motion. This reduction is independent of the sizes of subpopulations and remains valid in the thermodynamic limits, where these sizes or/and the number of subpopulations are infinite. We demonstrate that the approach to the dynamics of such systems, recently proposed by Ott and Antonsen, corresponds to a particular choice of microscopic constants of motion. The theory is applied to the standard Kuramoto model and to the description of two interacting subpopulations, exhibiting a chimera state. Furthermore, we analyze the dynamics of the extension of the Kuramoto model for the case of nonlinear coupling and demonstrate the multistability of synchronous states.

Dynamical Thermalization of Disordered Nonlinear Lattices

We study numerically how the energy spreads over a finite disordered nonlinear one-dimensional lattice, where all linear modes are exponentially localized by disorder. We establish emergence of dynamical thermalization, characterized as an ergodic chaotic dynamical state with a Gibbs distribution over the modes. Our results show that the fraction of thermalizing modes is finite and grows with the nonlinearity strength.

Compactons and Chaos in Strongly Nonlinear Lattices

We study localized traveling waves and chaotic states in strongly nonlinear one-dimensional Hamiltonian lattices. We show that the solitary waves are super-exponentially localized, and present an accurate numerical method allowing to find them for an arbitrary nonlinearity index. Compactons evolve from rather general initially localized perturbations and collide nearly elastically, nevertheless on a long time scale for finite lattices an extensive chaotic state is generally observed. Because of the system's scaling, these dynamical properties are valid for any energy.

Mixing-induced activity in open flows

We develop a theory describing how a convectively unstable active field in an open flow is transformed into absolutely unstable by local mixing. Presenting the mixing region as one with a locally enhanced effective diffusion allows us to find the linear transition point to an unstable global mode analytically. We derive the critical exponent that characterizes weakly nonlinear regimes beyond the instability threshold and compare it with numerical simulations of a full two-dimensional flow problem. The obtained scaling law turns out to be universal as it depends neither on geometry nor on the nature of the mixing region.

Partially integrable dynamics of hierarchical populations of coupled oscillators

We consider oscillator ensembles consisting of subpopulations of identical units, with a general heterogeneous coupling between subpopulations. Using the Watanabe-Strogatz ansatz we reduce the dynamics of the ensemble to a relatively small number of dynamical variables plus constants of motion. This reduction is independent of the sizes of subpopulations and remains valid in the thermodynamic limits. The theory is applied to the standard Kuramoto model and to the description of two interacting subpopulations, where we report a novel, quasiperiodic chimera state.

Mixing-induced global modes in open active flow

We describe how a convectively unstable active field in an open flow configuration becomes absolutely unstable due to local mixing. A representation of the mixing region as those with locally enhanced effective diffusion allows us to find the linear transition point to unstable global mode analytically. We derive the critical exponent characterizing weakly nonlinear regimes beyond instability and compare it with numerical simulations of a full two-dimensional flow problem.

Temporal chaos versus spatial mixing in reaction-advection-diffusion systems

We develop a theory describing the transition to a spatially homogeneous regime in a mixing flow with a chaotic in time reaction. The transverse Lyapunov exponent governing the stability of the homogeneous state can be represented as a combination of Lyapunov exponents for spatial mixing and temporal chaos. This representation, being exact for time-independent flows and equal Péclet numbers of different components, is demonstrated to work accurately for time-dependent flows and different Péclet numbers.
