Condensation temperature and magnetic phases of trapped coherently coupled Bose gases

We investigate condensation and finite-temperature magnetic phase transitions in a coherently (Rabi) coupled Bose gas confined in a three-dimensional harmonic trap. For the noninteracting system, we derive analytical expressions for the critical temperature and condensate fraction using a semiclassical description of the single-particle spectrum and density of states. At fixed particle number, coherent coupling enhances the critical temperature relative to the uncoupled system, and this enhancement decreases with increasing particle number $N$. The finite-size correction, in contrast, lowers the transition temperature, with its effect diminishing for larger $N$. We then incorporate repulsive interactions within the Hartree--Fock--Bogoliubov--Popov framework to investigate the finite-temperature phase diagram in the temperature--Rabi coupling plane. The system undergoes successive transitions from a ferromagnetic to a paramagnetic condensate and, at higher temperature, to a thermal gas. The transition boundaries obtained from the vanishing of the condensate fraction show excellent agreement with the analytical Hartree-Fock predictions. We find that the interactions substantially suppress the variation in the condensation temperature with an increase in the coherent coupling.

Universality beyond the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in the condensation of coherently coupled Bose gases

We study the universal spatial statistics of point-like topological defects formed during the nonequilibrium condensation of a coherently coupled Bose gas using the stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The symmetry-breaking transition is driven by a linear quench of the chemical potential, leading to stochastic vortex nucleation in the individual condensate components. When the two components are considered together, these elementary defects may combine across components to emerge as composite topological defects known as full quantum vortices. Beyond the mean defect density predicted by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM), we investigate the spatial organization of both the elementary and composite defects and show that their positions are well described by a Poisson point process, revealing a universal stochastic geometry. This universality is further described through Voronoi tessellation, whose cell-area statistics follow Poisson-Voronoi predictions. We also introduce the spatial form factor for characterizing the vortex configurations and demonstrate the emergence of a characteristic dip-ramp-plateau structure. Our results establish universal stochastic geometry of topological defects beyond conventional Kibble-Zurek scaling and identify it as a fundamental feature of nonequilibrium condensation in coherently coupled Bose gases.

Temperature driven false vacuum decay in coherently coupled Bose superfluids

The relaxation of a quantum field from a metastable state (false vacuum) to a stable one (true vacuum), also known as false vacuum decay, is a fundamental problem in quantum field theory and cosmology. We study this phenomenon using a two-dimensional interacting and coherently coupled Bose-Bose mixture, a platform that has already been employed experimentally to investigate false vacuum decay in one dimension. In such a mixture, it is possible to define an effective magnetization that acts as a quantum field variable. Using the Stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation (SGPE), we prepare thermal equilibrium states in the false vacuum and extract decay rates from the magnetization dynamics. The decay rates show an exponential dependence on temperature, in line with the thermal theory of instantons. Since the SGPE is based on complex scalar fields, it also allows us to explore the behavior of the phase, which turns out to become dynamic during decay. Our results confirm the SGPE as an effective tool for studying coupled magnetization and phase dynamics and the associated instanton physics in ultracold quantum gases.

Kibble-Zurek Scaling and Spatial Statistics in Quenched Binary Bose Superfluids

The emergence of order from an initially uncorrelated state across a phase transition is a central problem in quantum many-body physics, particularly in multicomponent systems where interactions between components lead to rich nonequilibrium dynamics. While defect formation is known to follow universal scaling laws, prior studies have focused mainly on defect density, leaving their spatial organization largely unexplored. Here we show that gradually tuning the chemical potential in a two-dimensional binary Bose gas drives condensation into either a miscible or immiscible phase. In the immiscible regime, domains form whose number, size, and boundary length obey Kibble-Zurek (KZ) scaling and evolve self-similarly. In the miscible regime, vortices emerge with KZ scaling. In both cases, the spatial distribution of vortices and domains is well described by a Poisson point process with KZ-determined density. These results reveal universal features of far-from-equilibrium dynamics and provide a framework to characterize stochastic geometry in multicomponent quantum systems.

Finite-temperature phase diagram and collective modes of coherently coupled Bose mixtures

We investigate the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in coherently (Rabi) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates at zero and finite temperatures, exploring different routes to the transition by tuning the Rabi coupling or increasing the temperature at a fixed coupling. Using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory within the Popov approximation, we map out the finite-temperature phase diagram of a three-dimensional homogeneous condensate and identify the critical line through the softening of the spin gap. Magnetization and the spin dispersion branch reveal the progressive suppression of the ferromagnetic order with increasing temperature. In quasi-one-dimensional harmonic traps, the transition, driven by Rabi coupling, is inferred through the softening of the spin breathing mode with its minimum shifting to lower coupling values with increasing temperature. Notably, the thermally driven transition causes monotonic hardening of all the spin modes. For both coupling and temperature-driven transition, the hybridized density modes in the ferromagnetic phase acquire more density character while approaching the critical point.

Thermal amplification and melting of phases in spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We implement Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation for a homogeneous Raman-induced spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate and investigate the effects of finite temperature ($T$) on the ground-state phase diagram. We calculate the roton gap as a function of Raman coupling ($\Omega$) or quadratic Zeeman field strength ($\epsilon$) to extract the critical points separating the supersolid stripe phase from the plane wave or zero-momentum phase at finite temperatures. We present a few representative finite-temperature phase diagrams for the system in the $T-\Omega$ and $T-\epsilon$ planes. Our observations indicate that the supersolid stripe phase melts at finite temperatures. We also discuss the contrasting roles of quantum and thermal fluctuations in shifting the phase boundary separating the supersolid stripe from the plane-wave phase.

Frequency-selective amplification of nonlinear response in strongly correlated bosons

We present a protocol to generate enhanced non-linear responses of incident pulses in the density wave phase within the extended Bose-Hubbard model using the concept of resonance-induced amplification (RIA). This method enables the selection of an incident pulse frequency to amplify the desired harmonic order. We characterize the enhancement of the non-linear harmonic spectra under various frequencies and field strengths of the incident pulses, and demonstrate that an optimal field strength is necessary to realize our protocol.

Temperature-induced supersolidity in spin-orbit-coupled Bose gases

Close to the superfluid plane-wave (PW) - supersolid stripe (ST) phase transition point of a zero temperature quasi-one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled Bose gas, we find that an increase in temperature induces a phase transition to the supersolid phase with a broken translational symmetry from the superfluid plane-wave phase. We use the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with the Popov approximation to investigate the effect of thermal fluctuations on the collective excitation spectrum and investigate the softening of the spin-dipole mode corresponding to the shift in the quantum critical point. This is in stark contrast to the PW-ST phase transition in a homogeneous system where non-zero temperatures facilitate the melting of the stripe phase.

Quantum phases and spectrum of collective modes in a spin-1 BEC with spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling

Motivated by the recent experiments [Chen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett 121, 113204 (2018), Chen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 250401 (2018)], we investigate the low-lying excitation spectrum of the ground-state phases of spin-orbital-angular-momentum-coupled (SOAM-coupled) spin-1 condensates. At vanishing detuning, a ferromagnetic SOAM-coupled spin-1 BEC can have two ground-state phases, namely coreless and polar-core vortex states, whereas an antiferromagnetic BEC supports only polar-core vortex solution. The angular momentum per particle, longitudinal magnetization, and excitation frequencies display discontinuities across the phase boundary between the coreless vortex and polar-core vortex phases. The low-lying excitation spectrum evaluated by solving the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations is marked by avoided crossings and hence the hybridization of the spin and density channels. The spectrum is further confirmed by the dynamical evolution of the ground state subjected to a perturbation suitable to excite a density or a spin mode and a variational analysis for the density-breathing mode.

Finite temperature ferromagnetic transition in coherently coupled Bose gases

A paramagnetic-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition is known to occur at zero temperature in a two-dimensional coherently-coupled Bose mixture of dilute ultracold atomic gases provided the interspecies interaction strength is large enough. Here we study the fate of such a transition at finite temperature by performing numerical simulations with the stochastic (projected) Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, which includes both thermal and beyond mean-field effects. By extracting the average magnetization, the magnetic fluctuations and characteristic relaxation frequency (or, critical slowing down), we identify a finite temperature critical line for the transition. We find that the critical point shifts linearly with temperature and, in addition, the three quantities used to probe the transition exhibit a temperature power-law scaling. The scaling of the critical slowing down is found to be consistent with thermal critical exponents and is very well approximated by the square of the spin excitation gap at the zero-temperature.

Oscillating Solitons and AC Josephson Effect in Ferromagnetic Bose-Bose Mixtures

Close to the demixing transition, the degree of freedom associated to relative density fluctuations of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate is described by a non-dissipative Landau-Lifshitz equation. In the quasi one-dimensional weakly immiscible case, this mapping surprisingly predicts that a dark-bright soliton should oscillate when subject to a constant force favoring separation of the two components. We propose a realistic experimental implementation of this phenomenon which we interpret as a spin-Josephson effect in the presence of a movable barrier.

Non-linear response of interacting bosons in a quasiperiodic potential

We theoretically study the electric pulse-driven non-linear response of interacting bosons loaded in an optical lattice in the presence of an incommensurate superlattice potential. In the non-interacting limit $(U=0)$, the model admits both localized and delocalized phases depending on the strength of the incommensurate potential $V_0$. We show that the particle current contains only odd harmonics in the delocalized phase in contrast to the localised phase where both even and odd harmonics are identified. The relative magnitudes of these even and odd harmonics and sharpness of the peaks can be tuned by varying frequency and the number of cycles of the applied pulse, respectively. In the presence of repulsive interactions, the amplitudes of the even and odd harmonics further depend on the relative strengths of the interaction $U$ and the potential $V_0$. We illustrate that the disorder and interaction-induced phases can be distinguished and characterized through the particle current. Finally, we discuss the dynamics of field induced excitation responsible for exhibiting higher harmonics in the current spectrum.

Collective excitations in cigar-shaped spin-orbit coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We theoretically study the collective excitations of a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions in a cigar-shaped trapping potential at zero and finite temperatures using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation. The collective modes at zero temperature are corroborated by the real-time evolution of the ground state subjected to a perturbation suitable to excite a density or a spin mode. We have also calculated a few low-lying modes analytically and found a very good agreement with the numerical results. We confirm the presence of excitations belonging to two broad categories, namely density, and spin excitations, based on the calculation of dispersion. The degeneracy between a pair of spin modes is broken by the spin-orbit coupling. At finite temperature, spin and density excitations show qualitatively different behavior as a function of temperature.

FORTRESS II: FORTRAN programs for solving coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations for spin-orbit coupled spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate

We provide here a set of three OpenMP parallelized FORTRAN 90/95 programs to compute the ground states and the dynamics of trapped spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with anisotropic spin-orbit (SO) coupling by solving a set of five coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations using a time-splitting Fourier spectral method. Depending on the nature of the problem, without any loss of generality, we have employed the Cartesian grid spanning either three-, two-, or one-dimensional space for numerical discretization. To illustrate the veracity of the package, wherever feasible, we have compared the numerical ground state solutions of the full mean-field model with those from the simplified scalar models. The two set of results show excellent agreement, in particular, through the equilibrium density profiles, energies and chemical potentials of the ground-states. We have also presented test results for OpenMP performance parameters like speedup and the efficiency of the three codes.

Quantum-torque-induced breaking of magnetic interfaces in ultracold gases

A rich variety of physical effects in spin dynamics arises at the interface between different magnetic materials. Engineered systems with interlaced magnetic structures have been used to implement spin transistors, memories and other spintronic devices. However, experiments in solid state systems can be difficult to interpret because of disorder and losses. Here, we realize analogues of magnetic junctions using a coherently-coupled mixture of ultracold bosonic gases. The spatial inhomogeneity of the atomic gas makes the system change its behavior from regions with oscillating magnetization -- resembling a magnetic material in the presence of an external transverse field -- to regions with a defined magnetization, as in magnetic materials with a ferromagnetic anisotropy stronger than external fields. Starting from a far-from-equilibrium fully polarized state, magnetic interfaces rapidly form. At the interfaces, we observe the formation of short-wavelength magnetic waves. They are generated by a quantum torque contribution to the spin current and produce strong spatial anticorrelations in the magnetization. Our results establish ultracold gases as a platform for the study of far-from-equilibrium spin dynamics in regimes that are not easily accessible in solid-state systems.

Finite temperature spin dynamics of a two-dimensional Bose-Bose atomic mixture

We examine the role of thermal fluctuations in uniform two-dimensional binary Bose mixtures of dilute ultracold atomic gases. We use a mean-field Hartree-Fock theory to derive analytical predictions for the miscible-immiscible transition. A nontrivial result of this theory is that a fully miscible phase at $T=0$ may become unstable at $T\neq0$, as a consequence of a divergent behaviour in the spin susceptibility. We test this prediction by performing numerical simulations with the Stochastic (Projected) Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which includes beyond mean-field effects. We calculate the equilibrium configurations at different temperatures and interaction strengths and we simulate spin oscillations produced by a weak external perturbation. Despite some qualitative agreement, the comparison between the two theories shows that the mean-field approximation is not able to properly describe the behavior of the two-dimensional mixture near the miscible-immiscible transition, as thermal fluctuations smoothen all sharp features both in the phase diagram and in spin dynamics, except for temperature well below the critical temperature for superfluidity.

Non-linear dynamical response of interacting bosons to synthetic electric field

We theoretically study the non-linear response of interacting neutral bosonic gas in a synthetically driven one-dimensional optical lattice. In particular, we examine the bosonic analogue of electronic higher harmonic generation in a strong time-dependent synthetic vector potential manifesting itself as the synthetic electric field. We show that the vector potential can generate reasonably high harmonics in the insulating regime, while the superfluid regime exhibits only a few harmonics. In the insulating regime, the number of harmonics increases with the increase in the strength of the vector potential. This originates primarily due to the field-driven resonant and non-resonant excitations in the neutral Mott state and their recombination with the ground state. If the repulsive interaction between two atoms ($U$) is close to the strength of the gauge potential ($A_0$), the resonant quasiparticle-quasihole pairs on nearest-neighbor sites, namely dipole states are found to a play a dominant role in the generating higher harmonics. However, in the strong-field limit $A_0\gg U$, the nonresonant states where quasiparticle-quasihole pairs are not on nearest-neighbor sites give rise to higher harmonics.

Design and characterization of a quantum heat pump in a driven quantum gas

We propose the implementation of a quantum heat pump with ultracold atoms. It is based on two periodically driven coherently coupled quantum dots using ultracold atoms. Each dot possesses two relevant quantum states and is coupled to a fermionic reservoir. The working principle is based on energy-selective driving-induced resonant tunneling processes, where a particle that tunnels from one dot to the other either absorbs or emits the energy quantum $\hbarω$ associated with the driving frequency, depending on its energy. We characterize the device using Floquet theory and compare simple analytical estimates to numerical simulations based on the Floquet-Born-Markov formalism. In particular, we show that driving-induced heating is directly linked to the micromotion of the Floquet states of the system.
