A new approach towards the construction of initial data in general relativity with positive Yamabe invariant and arbitrary mean curvature

This paper revisits the classical construction of initial data using the conformal method, as originally proposed by Holst, Nagy, and Tsogtgerel and later refined by Maxwell. We demonstrate that the existence of the solution can be proven using the Banach fixed point theorem, whereas the original proof relied on the Schauder fixed point theorem. This new approach has two main advantages: it guarantees the uniqueness of the solution to the equations of the conformal method as soon as one imposes a bound on the physical volume of it and it provides an explicit construction of the solution.

Conformal scattering of the wave equation in the Vaidya spacetime

We construct the conformal scattering operator for the scalar wave equation on the Vaidya spacetime using vector field methods. The spacetime we consider is Schwarzschild, near both past and future timelike infinities, in order to use existing decay results for the scalar field, ensuring our energy estimates. These estimates guarantee the injectivity of the trace operator and the closure of its range. Finally, we solve a Goursat problem for the scalar waves on null infinities, demonstrating that the range of the trace operator is dense. Consequently, this implies that the scattering operator is an isomorphism.

Peeling-off behaviour of the wave equation on the Vaidya spacetime

We study the peeling for the wave equation on the Vaidya spacetime following the approach developed by Mason and Nicolas in Mason-Nicolas 2009. The idea is to encode the regularity at null infinity of the rescaled field, characterised by Sobolev-type norms, in terms of corresponding function spaces of initial data. All function spaces are obtained from energy fluxes associated with an observer constructed from the Morawetz vector field on Minkowski spacetime. We combine conformal techniques and energy estimates to obtain the optimal classes of initial data ensuring a given regularity of the rescaled field. The classes of data are equivalent with those obtained on Minkowski and Schwarzschild spacetimes in that they impose the same decay at infinity and regularity.

Geometry of Vaidya spacetimes

We investigate the geometrical structure of Vaidya's spacetime in the case of a white hole with decreasing mass, stabilising to a black hole in finite or infinite time or evaporating completely. Our approach relies on a detailed analysis of the ordinary differential equation describing the incoming principal null geodesics, among which are the generators of the past horizon. We devote special attention to the case of a complete evaporation in infinite time and establish the existence of an asymptotic light-like singularity of the conformal curvature, touching both the past space-like singularity and future time-like infinity. This singularity is present independently of the decay rate of the mass. We derive an explicit formula that relates directly the strength of this null singularity to the asymptotic behaviour of the mass function.
