Commensurations and Metric Properties of Houghton's Groups

We describe the automorphism groups and the abstract commensurators of Houghton's groups. Then we give sharp estimates for the word metric of these groups and deduce that the commensurators embed into the corresponding quasi-isometry groups. As a further consequence, we obtain that the Houghton group on two rays is at least quadratically distorted in those with three or more rays.

Degree of commutativity of infinite groups

We prove that, in a finitely generated residually finite group of subexponential growth, the proportion of commuting pairs is positive if and only if the group is virtually abelian. In particular, this covers the case where the group has polynomial growth (i.e., virtually nilpotent groups, where the hypothesis of residual finiteness is always satisfied). We also show that, for non-elementary hyperbolic groups, the proportion of commuting pairs is always zero.

Graph-wreath products and finiteness conditions

A notion of \emph{graph-wreath product} is introduced. We obtain sufficient conditions for these products to satisfy the topologically inspired finiteness condition type $\operatorname{F}_n$. Under various additional assumptions we show that these conditions are necessary. Our results generalise results of Cornulier about wreath products in case $n=2$. Graph-wreath products include classical permutational wreath products and semidirect products of right-angled Artin groups by groups of automorphisms amongst others.

Stretching factors, metrics and train tracks for free products

In this paper we develop the metric theory for the outer space of a free product of groups. This generalizes the theory of the outer space of a free group, and includes its relative versions. The outer space of a free product is made of $G$-trees with possibly non-trivial vertex stabilisers. The strategies are the same as in the classical case, with some technicalities arising from the presence of infinite-valence vertices. In particular, we describe the Lipschitz metric and show how to compute it; we prove the existence of optimal maps; we describe geodesics represented by folding paths. We show that train tracks representative of irreducible (hence hyperbolic) automorphisms exist and that their are metrically characterized as minimal displaced points, showing in particular that the set of train tracks is closed. We include a proof of the existence of simplicial train tracks map without using Perron-Frobenius theory. A direct corollary of this general viewpoint is an easy proof that relative train track maps exist in both the free group and free product case.

Conjugacy in Houghton's Groups

Let $n\in \mathbb{N}$. Houghton's group $H_n$ is the group of permutations of $\{1,\dots, n\}\times \mathbb{N}$, that eventually act as a translation in each copy of $\mathbb{N}$. We prove the solvability of the conjugacy problem and conjugator search problem for $H_n$, $n\geq 2$.

Kurosh rank of intersections of subgroups of free products of orderable groups

We prove that the reduced Kurosh rank of the intersection of two subgroups $H$ and $K$ of a free product of right-orderable groups is bounded above by the product of the reduced Kurosh ranks of $H$ and $K$. In particular, taking the fundamental group of a graph of groups with trivial vertex and edge groups, and its Bass-Serre tree, our Theorem becomes the desired inequality of the usual Strengthened Hanna Neumann conjecture for free groups.

Spectral rigidity of automorphic orbits in free groups

It is well-known that a point $T\in cv_N$ in the (unprojectivized) Culler-Vogtmann Outer space $cv_N$ is uniquely determined by its \emph{translation length function} $||.||_T:F_N\to\mathbb R$. A subset $S$ of a free group $F_N$ is called \emph{spectrally rigid} if, whenever $T,T'\in cv_N$ are such that $||g||_T=||g||_{T'}$ for every $g\in S$ then $T=T'$ in $cv_N$. By contrast to the similar questions for the Teichmüller space, it is known that for $N\ge 2$ there does not exist a finite spectrally rigid subset of $F_N$. In this paper we prove that for $N\ge 3$ if $H\le Aut(F_N)$ is a subgroup that projects to an infinite normal subgroup in $Out(F_N)$ then the $H$-orbit of an arbitrary nontrivial element $g\in F_N$ is spectrally rigid. We also establish a similar statement for $F_2=F(a,b)$, provided that $g\in F_2$ is not conjugate to a power of $[a,b]$. We also include an appended corrigendum which gives a corrected proof of Lemma 5.1 about the existence of a fully irreducible element in an infinite normal subgroup of of $Out(F_N)$. Our original proof of Lemma 5.1 relied on a subgroup classification result of Handel-Mosher, originally stated by Handel-Mosher for arbitrary subgroups $H\le Out(F_N)$. After our paper was published, it turned out that the proof of the Handel-Mosher subgroup classification theorem needs the assumption that $H$ be finitely generated. The corrigendum provides an alternative proof of Lemma~5.1 which uses the corrected, finitely generated, version of the Handel-Mosher theorem and relies on the 0-acylindricity of the action of $Out(F_N)$ on the free factor complex (due to Bestvina-Mann-Reynolds). A proof of 0-acylindricity is included in the corrigendum.

Statistical properties of subgroups of free groups

The usual way to investigate the statistical properties of finitely generated subgroups of free groups, and of finite presentations of groups, is based on the so-called word-based distribution: subgroups are generated (finite presentations are determined) by randomly chosen k-tuples of reduced words, whose maximal length is allowed to tend to infinity. In this paper we adopt a different, though equally natural point of view: we investigate the statistical properties of the same objects, but with respect to the so-called graph-based distribution, recently introduced by Bassino, Nicaud and Weil. Here, subgroups (and finite presentations) are determined by randomly chosen Stallings graphs whose number of vertices tends to infinity. Our results show that these two distributions behave quite differently from each other, shedding a new light on which properties of finitely generated subgroups can be considered frequent or rare. For example, we show that malnormal subgroups of a free group are negligible in the graph-based distribution, while they are exponentially generic in the word-based distribution. Quite surprisingly, a random finite presentation generically presents the trivial group in this new distribution, while in the classical one it is known to generically present an infinite hyperbolic group.

Metric properties of Outer Space

We define metrics on Culler-Vogtmann space, which are an analogue of the Teichmuller metric and are constructed using stretching factors. In fact the metrics we study are related, one being a symmetrised version of the other. We investigate the basic properties of these metrics, showing the advantages and pathologies of both choices. We show how to compute stretching factors between marked metric graphs in an easy way and we discuss the behaviour of stretching factors under iterations of automorphisms. We study metric properties of folding paths, showing that they are geodesic for the non-symmetric metric and, if they do not enter the thin part of Outer space, quasi-geodesic for the symmetric metric.

Maximal index automorphisms of free groups with no attracting fixed points on the boundary are Dehn twists

In this paper we define a quantity called the rank of an outer automorphism of a free group which is the same as the index introduced in [D. Gaboriau, A. Jaeger, G. Levitt and M. Lustig, `An index for counting fixed points for automorphisms of free groups', Duke Math. J. 93 (1998) 425-452] without the count of fixed points on the boundary. We proceed to analyze outer automorphisms of maximal rank and obtain results analogous to those in [D.J. Collins and E. Turner, `An automorphism of a free group of finite rank with maximal rank fixed point subgroup fixes a primitive element', J. Pure and Applied Algebra 88 (1993) 43-49]. We also deduce that all such outer automorphisms can be represented by Dehn twists, thus proving the converse to a result in [M.M. Cohen and M. Lustig, `The conjugacy problem for Dehn twist automorphisms of free groups', Comment Math. Helv. 74 (1999) 179-200], and indicate a solution to the conjugacy problem when such automorphisms are given in terms of images of a basis, thus providing a moderate extension to the main theorem of Cohen and Lustig by somewhat different methods.
