Quantum Natural Gradient optimizer on noisy platforms: QAOA as a case study

We investigate the performance of the Quantum Natural Gradient (QNG) optimizer in the presence of noise. Specifically, we evaluate the efficacy of QNG within the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) for finding the ground state of the Transverse Field Ising Model (TFIM). Its performance is benchmarked against the Vanilla Gradient Descent optimizer across two prominent quantum computing platforms: Rydberg atoms and superconducting circuits. Our analysis includes simulations under both idealized noise-free conditions and realistic noisy environments based on calibration data from actual devices. Results demonstrate that QNG consistently outperforms Vanilla Gradient Descent, exhibiting faster convergence on average and greater robustness against random initializations of parameters. This robustness is attributed to the distance regularization in parameter space inherent to QNG. Additionally, QNG achieves a higher convergence rate to the solution, effectively avoiding certain local minima. These findings highlight QNG as a promising tool for optimizing variational quantum algorithms in noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices.

Mimicking spatial localization in dynamical random environment

We study the role played by noise on the QW introduced in [1], a 1D model that is inspired by a two particle interacting QW. The noise is introduced by a random change in the value of the phase during the evolution, from a constant probability distribution within a given interval. The consequences of introducing such kind of noise depend on both the center value and the width of that interval: a wider interval manifests as a higher level of noise. For some range of parameters, one obtains a quasi-localized state, with a diffusive speed that can be controlled by varying the parameters of the noise. The existence of this (approximately) localized state for such kind of time-dependent noise is, to the best of our knowledge, totally new, since localization (i.e., Anderson localization) is linked in the literature to a spatial random noise.

Screening effects in Relativistic Models of Dense Matter at Finite Temperature

We investigate screening effects of the medium on the potential interaction between two static 'charges' for different models of dense plasmas in the one-boson exchange approximation. The potential can exhibit an oscillatory behavior, which is related to the analytic structure of the corresponding boson propagators in the complex $q$-plane. We have first revisited the one-pion exchange in a nuclear medium. In addition to Friedel oscillations, which are associated to branch cuts in the $q$-plane, there appears another oscillatory component, which arises from a pole on the pion propagator. This pole is located appart from the axes, giving rise to an oscillating Yukawa-like potential. Therefore, we call this phenomenon 'Yukawa oscillations'. This phenomenon does not appear in the Debye component of the QED screened potential, even if the coupling constant is artificially increased. We have also studied a model of QCD quark-gluon plasma. In this case, the one-gluon propagator also shows this kind of poles. At high densities and/or temperatures, where one expects perturbative QCD to be valid, the pole shifts towards large momenta.
