A Weak Topology on Metric Spaces

We use metric functionals to build a weak topology associated with $d$-weak convergence on metric spaces. We also show the existence of a sequence in the space $C[0,1]$ that is unbounded in the sup-norm yet converges $d$-weakly. This points out an error in an earlier work.

Metric functionals and weak convergence

We introduce a notion of weak convergence in arbitrary metric spaces. Metric functionals are key in our analysis: weak convergence of sequences in a given metric space is tested against all the metric functionals defined on said space. When restricted to bounded sequences in normed linear spaces, we prove that our notion of weak convergence agrees with the standard one.

Subinvariant metric functionals for nonexpansive mappings

We investigate the existence of subinvariant metric functionals for commuting families of nonexpansive mappings in noncompact subsets of Banach spaces. Our findings underscore the practicality of metric functionals when searching for fixed points of nonexpansive mappings. To demonstrate this, we additionally investigate subsets of Banach spaces that have only nontrivial metric functionals. We particularly show that in certain cases every metric functional has a unique minimizer; thus, subinvariance implies the existence of a fixed point.

Firm non-expansive mappings in weak metric spaces

We introduce the notion of firm non-expansive mapping in weak metric spaces, extending previous work for Banach spaces and certain geodesic spaces. We prove that, for firm non-expansive mappings, the minimal displacement, the linear rate of escape, and the asymptotic step size are all equal. This generalises a theorem by Reich and Shafrir.

Comments on the cosmic convergence of nonexpansive maps

This note discusses some aspects of the asymptotic behaviour of nonexpansive maps. Using metric functionals, we make a connection to the invariant subspace problem and prove a new result for nonexpansive maps of $\ell^{1}$. We also point out some inaccurate assertions appearing in the literature on this topic.

Characterizing the metric compactification of $L_{p}$ spaces by random measures

We present a complete characterization of the metric compactification of $L_{p}$ spaces for $1\leq p < \infty$. Each element of the metric compactification of $L_{p}$ is represented by a random measure on a certain Polish space. By way of illustration, we revisit the $L_{p}$-mean ergodic theorem for $1 < p < \infty$, and Alspach's example of an isometry on a weakly compact convex subset of $L_{1}$ with no fixed points.

The horofunction boundary of finite-dimensional $\ell_p$ spaces

We give a complete description of the horofunction boundary of finite-dimensional $\ell_p$ spaces for $1\leq p\leq \infty$. We also study the variation norm on $\mathbb{R}^{\mathcal{N}}$, $\mathcal{N}=\{1,...,N\}$, and the corresponding horofunction boundary. As a consequence, we describe the horofunctions for Hilbert's projective metric on the interior of the standard cone $\mathbb{R}^{\mathcal{N}}_{+}$ of $\mathbb{R}^{\mathcal{N}}$.

On the metric compactification of infinite-dimensional $\ell_{p}$ spaces

The notion of metric compactification was introduced by Gromov and later rediscovered by Rieffel; and has been mainly studied on proper geodesic metric spaces. We present here a generalization of the metric compactification that can be applied to infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. Thereafter we give a complete description of the metric compactification of infinite-dimensional $\ell_{p}$ spaces for all $1\leq p < \infty$. We also give a full characterization of the metric compactification of infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.
