Metric entropy of Fourier ratio classes on ${\mathbb Z}_N$

We study metric entropy and uniform sampling for classes of signals on ${\mathbb Z}_N$ with prescribed Fourier ratio. The Fourier ratio measures how spread out the Fourier transform of a signal is, interpolating between sparse spectral support and nearly uniform spectral distribution. Our main result gives upper and lower bounds for the metric entropy of a Fourier-ratio layer of size $r.$ At any sufficiently small fixed covering scale, these bounds match in their dependence on $r$ and $N$ and show that $FR(f)^2$ acts as an effective dimension parameter governing the size of the class. We use the entropy estimate to obtain uniform bounds for empirical approximation over Fourier-ratio classes. We also establish a phase-orbit packing result. If a single signal has a flat spectral block of size $k,$ then phase perturbations of that signal generate an exponentially large family with the same Fourier ratio and positive $\ell^2$ separation. Together, these results show that the Fourier ratio governs not only approximation properties of individual signals, but also the geometric size and uniform sampling behavior of entire signal classes.

Trigonometric Convexity for the Multidimensional Indicator after Ivanov

Multidimensional indicator after Ivanov is a generalization of the notion of indicator, that is well-known for analytic functions in one complex variable, to analytic functions in several complex variables. We prove an analogue of trigonometric convexity for it. Additionally, we show that our estimate is sharp. The proof is based on the multidimensional analogue of the sectorial Fourier inversion formula.

Sectorial Paley-Wiener Theorem

By correcting, simplifying and extending a result of Morimoto, we prove a Paley-Wiener type theorem for functions of exponential type in a sector. It serves as a sectorial analogue of Polya's theorem on the indicator of entire functions and improves a result of Dzhrbashyan and Avetisyan by finding the maximal convex set of analytic continuation inside a sector.

An Upper Bound for the Menchov-Rademacher Operator for Right Triangles

The Menchov-Rademacher inequality is an inequality in harmonic analysis that bounds the $L_2$ norm of a certain maximal operator. It was first established in order to prove almost everywhere convergence of a one-parameter series of orthogonal functions. When two-parameter series of orthogonal functions is considered, the exact way the series is grouped becomes essential. We will consider grouping of a two-parameter series, generated by a sequence of right triangles with a vertex at the origin, who might be non-equilateral, and prove almost everywhere convergence when the eccentricity of those triangles is bounded. In order to carry out the proof, we will derive an analogue of the Menchov-Rademacher inequality for right triangles.

A Refinement of Carlson's Theorem

Carlson's theorem estimates the growth of an analytic function along the imaginary axis, provided that the function is zero at non-negative integers. We refine this theorem and describe not only the function's growth but also necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of its spectral measure.

Lower Bounds for $L_1$ Discrepancy

We find the best asymptotic lower bounds for the coefficient of the leading term of the $L_1$ norm of the two-dimensional (axis-parallel) discrepancy that can be obtained by K.Roth's orthogonal function method among a large class of test functions. We use methods of combinatorics, probability, complex and harmonic analysis.

A simple proof of the sharp weighted estimate for Calderon-Zygmund operators on homogeneous spaces

Here we show that Lerner's method of local mean oscillation gives a simple proof of the $A_2$ conjecture for spaces of homogeneous type: that is, the linear dependence on the $A_2$ norm for weighted $L^2$ Calderon-Zygmund operator estimates. In the Euclidean case, the result is due to Hytönen, and for geometrically doubling spaces, Nazarov, Rezinikov, and Volberg obtained the linear bound.

A Remark on Coefficients of Jacobi Matrices Arising from a Schrodinger Operator

A discrete analogue of a Schrodinger type operator proposed by J. Bellissard has a singular continuous spectrum. In this remark we answer the conjecture formulated by D. Bessis, M. Mehta and P. Moussa on the coefficients of that operator. It turns out that the coefficients have a more complicated behavior than it was conjectured.

Chebyshev-Type Quadrature Formulas for New Weight Classes

We give Chebyshev-type quadrature formulas for certain new weight classes. These formulas are of highest possible degree when the number of nodes is a power of 2. We also describe the nodes in a constructive way, which is important for applications. One of our motivations to consider these type of problems is the Faraday cage phenomenon for discrete charges as discussed by J. Korevaar and his colleagues.

Weak and Strong-type estimates for Haar Shift Operators: Sharp power on the $A_p$ characteristic

As a corollary to our main result we deduce sharp A_p$ inequalities for T being either the Hilbert transform in dimension d=1, the Beurling transform in dimension d=2, or a Riesz transform in any dimension d\ge 2. For T_{\ast} the maximal truncations of these operators, we prove the sharp A_p weighted weak and strong-type L ^{p} (w) inequalities, for all 1<p<\infty. Key elements of the proof are (1) extrapolation (2) a recent argument for the A_2 bound in the untruncated case, an argument of Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera. (3) a weak-L^1 estimate for duals of maximal truncations. And (4) recent characterizations of the two-weight inequalities for strong and weak type inequalities, due to Lacey-Sawyer-Uriate-Tuero.

Weak and Strong type $ A_p$ Estimates for Calderón-Zygmund Operators

For a Calderon-Zygmund operator T on d-dimensional space, that has a sufficiently smooth kernel, we prove that for any 1< p \le 2, and weight w in A_p, that the maximal truncations T_* of T map L^p(w) to weak-L^p(w), with norm bounded by the A_p characteristic of w to the first power. This result combined with the (deep) recent result of Perez-Treil-Volberg, shows that the strong-type of T on L^2(w) is bounded by A_2 characteristic of w to the first power. (It is well-known that L^2 is the critical case for the strong type estimate.) Both results are sharp, aside from the number of derivatives imposed on the kernel of the operator. The proof uses the full structure theory of Calderon-Zygmund Operators, reduction to testing conditions, and a Corona argument.

A Three Dimensional Signed Small Ball Inequality

The Small Ball Inequality is a conjectural lower bound on sums the L-infinity norm of sums of Haar functions supported on dyadic rectangles of a fixed volume in the unit cube. The conjecture is fundamental to questions in discrepancy theory, approximation theory and probability theory. In this article, we concentrate on a special case of the conjecture, and give the best known lower bound in dimension 3, using a conditional expectation argument.

Recovering Singular Integrals from Haar Shifts

Any sufficiently smooth one-dimensional Calderon-Zygmund convolution operator is the average of Haar shift operators. The latter are dyadic operators which can be efficiently expressed in terms of the Haar basis. This extends the result of S. Petermichl on restoring Hilbert transform via Haar shift operators, a technique that has become fundamental to the analysis of these operators.

Exponential Squared Integrability for the Discrepancy Function in Two Dimensions

Let A_N be an N-point distribution in the unit square in the Euclidean plane. We consider the Discrepancy function D_N(x) in two dimensions with respect to rectangles with lower left corner anchored at the origin and upper right corner at the point x. This is the difference between the actual number of points of A_N in such a rectangle and the expected number of points - N x_1x_2 - in the rectangle. We prove sharp estimates for the BMO norm and the exponential squared Orlicz norm of D_N(x). For example we show that necessarily ||D_N||_(expL^2) >c(logN)^(1/2) for some aboslute constant c>0. On the other hand we use a digit scrambled version of the van der Corput set to show that this bound is tight in the case N=2^n, for some positive integer n. These results unify the corresponding classical results of Roth and Schmidt in a sharp fashion.

On the Signed Small Ball Inequality

This paper is a companion to our prior paper arXiv:0705.4619 on the `Small Ball Inequality in All Dimensions.' In it, we address a more restrictive inequality, and obtain a non-trivial, explicit bound, using a single essential estimate from our prior paper. The prior bound was not explicit and much more involved.

On the Small Ball Inequality in All Dimensions

Let h_R denote an L ^{\infty} normalized Haar function adapted to a dyadic rectangle R contained in the unit cube in dimension d. We establish a non-trivial lower bound on the L^{\infty} norm of the `hyperbolic' sums $$ \sum _{|R|=2 ^{-n}} α(R) h_R (x) $$ The lower bound is non-trivial in that we improve the average case bound by n^η for some positive η, a function of dimension d. As far as the authors know, this is the first result of this type in dimension 4 and higher. This question is related to Conjectures in (1) Irregularity of Distributions, (2) Approximation Theory and (3) Probability Theory. The method of proof of this paper gives new results on these conjectures in all dimensions 4 and higher. This paper builds upon prior work of Jozef Beck, from 1989, and first two authors from 2006. These results were of the same nature, but only in dimension 3.
