Majorana Fermions, Supersymmetry Breaking, and Born-Infeld Theory

This review is devoted to highlight some aspects of the relevance of Majorana fermions in rigid supersymmetry breaking in four spacetime dimensions. After introducing some basic facts on spinors, and on their symmetries and reality properties, we consider Goldstino actions describing partial breaking of rigid supersymmetry, then focussing on Born-Infeld non-linear theory, its duality symmetry, and its supersymmetric extensions, also including multi-field generalizations exhibiting doubly self-duality.

Multi-Centered First Order Formalism

We propose a first order formalism for multi-centered black holes with flat tree-dimensional base-space, within the stu model of N=2, D=4 ungauged Maxwell-Einstein supergravity. This provides a unified description of first order flows of this universal sector of all models with a symmetric scalar manifold which can be obtained by dimensional reduction from five dimensions. We develop a D=3 Cartesian formalism which suitably extends the definition of central and matter charges, as well as of black hole effective potential and first order "fake" superpotential, in order to deal with not necessarily axisimmetric solutions, and thus with multi-centered and/or (under-)rotating extremal black holes. We derive general first order flow equations for composite non-BPS and almost BPS classes, and we analyze some of their solutions, retrieving various single-centered (static or under-rotating) and multi-centered known systems. As in the t^3 model, the almost BPS class turns out to split into two general branches, and the well known almost BPS system is shown to be a particular solution of the second branch.

Multi-Centered Black Hole Flows

We describe the systematical construction of the first order formalism for multi-centered black holes with flat three dimensional base-space, within the so-called $T^{3}$ model of N=2, D=4 ungauged Maxwell-Einstein supergravity. The three possible flow classes (BPS, composite non-BPS and almost-BPS) are analyzed in detail, and various solutions, such as single-centered (static or under-rotating) and all known multi-centered black holes, are recovered in this unified framework. We also consider the possibility of obtaining new solutions. The almost-BPS class is proved to split into two general sub-classes, corresponding to a positive or negative value of the duality-invariant polynomial for the total charge; the well known almost BPS system is shown to be a particular solution of the second sub-class.

On Invariant Structures of Black Hole Charges

We study "minimal degree" complete bases of duality- and "horizontal"- invariant homogeneous polynomials in the flux representation of two-centered black hole solutions in two classes of D=4 Einstein supergravity models with symmetric vector multiplets' scalar manifolds. Both classes exhibit an SL(2,R) "horizontal" symmetry. The first class encompasses N=2 and N=4 matter-coupled theories, with semi-simple U-duality given by SL(2,R) x SO(m,n); the analysis is carried out in the so-called Calabi-Vesentini symplectic frame (exhibiting maximal manifest covariance) and until order six in the fluxes included. The second class, exhibiting a non-trivial "horizontal" stabilizer SO(2), includes N=2 minimally coupled and N=3 matter coupled theories, with U-duality given by the pseudo-unitary group U(r,s) (related to complex flux representations). Finally, we comment on the formulation of special Kaehler geometry in terms of "generalized" groups of type E7.

Freudenthal Duality and Generalized Special Geometry

Freudenthal duality, introduced in L. Borsten, D. Dahanayake, M. J. Duff and W. Rubens, Phys.Rev. D80, 026003 (2009), and defined as an anti-involution on the dyonic charge vector in d = 4 space-time dimensions for those dualities admitting a quartic invariant, is proved to be a symmetry not only of the classical Bekenstein-Hawking entropy but also of the critical points of the black hole potential. Furthermore, Freudenthal duality is extended to any generalized special geometry, thus encompassing all N > 2 supergravities, as well as N = 2 generic special geometry, not necessarily having a coset space structure.

Small Black Hole Constituents and Horizontal Symmetry

By exploiting the role of the horizontal symmetry SL(2,R), we extend the analysis and classification of two-centered extremal black hole charge configurations to the case of "small" single-centered constituents. These latter are seen to decrease the number of independent horizontal-invariant polynomials from four to one, depending on the rank of the charge orbit supporting each of the two centers. Within U-duality groups of type E7, both reducible and irreducible symmetric supergravity models in four space-time dimensions are considered, thus encompassing N = 2 and N = 8 theories.

Two-Center Black Holes Duality-Invariants for stu Model and its lower-rank Descendants

We classify 2-center extremal black hole charge configurations through duality-invariant homogeneous polynomials, which are the generalization of the unique invariant quartic polynomial for single-center black holes based on homogeneous symmetric cubic special Kaehler geometries. A crucial role is played by an horizontal SL(p,R) symmetry group, which classifies invariants for p-center black holes. For p = 2, a (spin 2) quintet of quartic invariants emerge. We provide the minimal set of independent invariants for the rank-3 N = 2, d = 4 stu model, and for its lower-rank descendants, namely the rank-2 st^2 and rank-1 t^3 models; these models respectively exhibit seven, six and five independent invariants. We also derive the polynomial relations among these and other duality invariants. In particular, the symplectic product of two charge vectors is not independent from the quartic quintet in the t^3 model, but rather it satisfies a degree-16 relation, corresponding to a quartic equation for the square of the symplectic product itself.

Universality of the superpotential for d = 4 extremal black holes

We provide a general strategy to obtain the superpotential W for both BPS and non-BPS extremal black holes in N=2 four dimensional supergravities based on symmetric spaces. This extends the construction of W in terms of U-duality invariants that was presented in previous work on the $t^3$ model. As an application, we explicitly provide W and the solutions to the related gradient flows for the $st^2$ and stu models. The procedure is shown to hold also for the full N=8 theory. The role of flat directions in moduli space is clarified.

First order flows for N=2 extremal black holes and duality invariants

We derive explicitly the superpotential W for the non-BPS branch of N=2 extremal black holes in terms of duality invariants of special geometry. Although this is done for a one-modulus case (the t^3 model), the example gives $Z \neq 0$ black holes and captures the basic distinction from previous attempts on the quadratic series (vanishing C tensor) and from the other Z=0 cases. The superpotential W turns out to be a non-polynomial expression (containing radicals) of the basic duality invariant quantities. These are the same which enter in the quartic invariant I_4 for N=2 theories based on symmetric spaces. Using the flow equations generated by W, we also provide the analytic general solution for the warp factor and for the scalar field supporting the non-BPS black holes.

Relationship between quantum mechanics with and without monopoles

We show that the inclusion of the monopole field in the three- and five-dimensional spherically symmetric quantum mechanical systems, supplied by the addition of the special centrifugal term, does not yield any change in the radial wavefunction and in the functional dependence of the energy spectra on quantum numbers. The only change in the spectrum is the lift of the range of the total and azimuth quantum numbers. The changes in the angular part wavefunction are independent of the specific choice of the (central) potential. We also present the integrable model of the spherical oscillator which is different from the Higgs oscillator.

Hamiltonian reduction and supersymmetric mechanics with Dirac monopole

We apply the technique of Hamiltonian reduction for the construction of three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric mechanics specified by the presence of a Dirac monopole. For this purpose we take the conventional ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric mechanics on the four-dimensional conformally-flat spaces and perform its Hamiltonian reduction to three-dimensional system. We formulate the final system in the canonical coordinates, and present, in these terms, the explicit expressions of the Hamiltonian and supercharges. We show that, besides a magnetic monopole field, the resulting system is specified by the presence of a spin-orbit coupling term. A comparison with previous work is also carried out.

Noncommutative Coulombic Monopole

We have constructed the appropriate Hamiltonian of the noncommutative coulombic monopole (i.e. the noncommutative hydrogen atom with a monopole). The energy levels of this system have been calculated, discussed and compared with the noncommutative hydrogen atom ones. The main emphasis is put on the ground state. In addition, the Stark effect for the noncommutative coulombic monopole has been studied.

Noncommutative Quantum Scattering in a Central Field

In this paper the problem of noncommutative elastic scattering in a central field is considered. General formulas for the differential cross-section for two cases are obtained. For the case of high energy of an incident wave it is shown that the differential cross-section coincides with that on the commutative space. For the case in which noncommutativity yields only a small correction to the central potential it is shown that the noncommutativity leads to the redistribution of particles along the azimuthal angle, although the whole cross-section coincides with the commutative case.

Quantum Oscillator on $\DC P^n$ in a constant magnetic field

We construct the quantum oscillator interacting with a constant magnetic field on complex projective spaces $\DC P^N$, as well as on their non-compact counterparts, i. e. the $N-$dimensional Lobachewski spaces ${\cal L}_N$. We find the spectrum of this system and the complete basis of wavefunctions. Surprisingly, the inclusion of a magnetic field does not yield any qualitative change in the energy spectrum. For $N>1$ the magnetic field does not break the superintegrability of the system, whereas for N=1 it preserves the exact solvability of the system. We extend this results to the cones constructed over $\DC P^N$ and ${\cal L}_N$, and perform the (Kustaanheimo-Stiefel) transformation of these systems to the three-dimensional Coulomb-like systems.

Quantum Mechanics Model on Kähler conifold

We propose an exactly-solvable model of the quantum oscillator on the class of Kähler spaces (with conic singularities), connected with two-dimensional complex projective spaces. Its energy spectrum is nondegenerate in the orbital quantum number, when the space has non-constant curvature. We reduce the model to a three-dimensional system interacting with the Dirac monopole. Owing to noncommutativity of the reduction and quantization procedures, the Hamiltonian of the reduced system gets non-trivial quantum corrections. We transform the reduced system into a MIC-Kepler-like one and find that quantum corrections arise only in its energy and coupling constant. We present the exact spectrum of the generalized MIC-Kepler system. The one-(complex) dimensional analog of the suggested model is formulated on the Riemann surface over the complex projective plane and could be interpreted as a system with fractional spin.

3D Oscillator and Coulomb Systems reduced from Kahler spaces

We define the oscillator and Coulomb systems on four-dimensional spaces with U(2)-invariant Kahler metric and perform their Hamiltonian reduction to the three-dimensional oscillator and Coulomb systems specified by the presence of Dirac monopoles. We find the Kahler spaces with conic singularity, where the oscillator and Coulomb systems on three-dimensional sphere and two-sheet hyperboloid are originated. Then we construct the superintegrable oscillator system on three-dimensional sphere and hyperboloid, coupled to monopole, and find their four-dimensional origins. In the latter case the metric of configuration space is non-Kahler one. Finally, we extend these results to the family of Kahler spaces with conic singularities.
