Radiative Dirac Neutrino Mass with Dark Matter and it's implication to $0ν4β$ in the $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the Standard Model

The Standard Model gauge symmetry is extended by $U(1)_{B-L}$ which when spontaneously broken leads to residual $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry. $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge symmetry made anomaly free by introducing exotic SM singlets with corresponding $U(1)_{B-L}$ charges of $13$, $-14$, and $15$. $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry ensures the Dirac nature of neutrinos, simultaneously stabilizing dark matter. Dirac neutrino mass is generated through scotogenic scenario. Dark matter, direct detection, cosmological constraints, and collider constraints analysis is performed. $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry predicts the exact absence of neutrinoless double beta decay ($0ν2β$) and gives a prediction for an enhanced neutrinoless quadruple beta decay ($0ν4β$) via which this model can be tested. Model allows for Majorana dark matter as well as for long-lived dark matter candidates.

A UV Complete Framework of Freeze-in Massive Particle Dark Matter

We propose a way to generate tiny couplings of freeze-in massive particle dark matter with the Standard Model particles dynamically by considering an extension of the electroweak gauge symmetry. The dark matter is considered to be a singlet under this extended gauge symmetry which we have assumed to be the one in a very widely studied scenario called left-right symmetric model. Several heavy particles, that can be thermally inaccessible in the early Universe due to their masses being greater than the reheat temperature after inflation, can play the role of portals between dark matter and Standard Model particles through one loop couplings. Due to the loop suppression, one can generate the required non-thermal dark matter couplings without any need of highly fine tuned Yukawa couplings beyond that of electron Yukawa with the Standard Model like Higgs boson. We show that generic values of Yukawa couplings as large as $\mathcal{O}(0.01)$ to $\mathcal{O}(1)$ can keep the dark matter out of thermal equilibrium in the early Universe and produce the correct relic abundance later through the freeze-in mechanism. Though the radiative couplings of dark matter are tiny as required by the freeze-in scenario, the associated rich particle sector of the model can be probed at ongoing and near future experiments. The allowed values of dark matter mass can remain in a wide range from keV to TeV order keeping the possibilities of warm and cold dark matter equally possible.

WIMPy Leptogenesis in extended Scotogenic Model

We address the possibility of realizing successful leptogenesis from dark matter annihilations in the scotogenic model of neutrino masses to explain the same order of magnitude abundance of dark matter and baryons in the present Universe. After showing that the minimal model in this category cannot satisfy all these requirements, we study a minimal extension of this model and find that the scale of leptogenesis can be as low as 5 TeV, lower than the one in vanilla leptogenesis scenario in scotogenic model along with the additional advantage of explaining the baryon-dark matter coincidence. Due to such low scale, the model remains predictive at dark matter direct detection and rare decay experiments looking for charged lepton flavor violating processes.

$SU(7)$ Unification of Scotogenic Model with Pati-Salam $SU(4)_c\otimes SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_R$ gauge symmetry

In this work we demonstrate how Scotogenic model can arise naturally from an $SU(7)$ grand unified theory. Our model also includes a low scale Pati-Salam $SU(4)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_R$ symmetry which unifies quarks and leptons. $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry needed for the realization of Scotogenic scenario is a residual symmetry and not $ad$ $hoc$. A short fermion masses and dark matter analysis is included.

Neutrinoless double beta decay in minimal left-right symmetric model with universal seesaw

We present a detailed discussion on neutrinoless double beta decay $(0νββ)$ within left-right symmetric models based on the gauge symmetry of type $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ as well as $SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R \times U(1)_{X}$ where fermion masses including that of neutrinos are generated through a universal seesaw mechanism. We find that one or more of the right-handed neutrinos could be as light as a few keV if left-right symmetry breaking occurs in the range of a few TeV to 100 TeV. With such light right-handed neutrinos, we perform a detailed study of new physics contributions to $0νββ$ and constrain the model parameters from the latest experimental bound on such a rare decay process. We find that the new physics contribution to $0νββ$ in such a scenario, particularly the heavy-light neutrino mixing diagrams, can individually saturate the existing experimental bounds, but their contributions to total $0νββ$ half-life cancels each other due to unitarity of the total $6\times 6$ mass matrix. The effective contribution to half-life therefore, arises from the purely left and purely right neutrino and gauge boson mediated diagrams. We find that the parameter space saturating the $0νββ$ bounds remain allowed from the latest experimental bounds on charged lepton flavour violating decays like $μ\rightarrow e γ$. We finally include the bounds from cosmology and supernova to constrain the parameter space of the model.

Effective chemical potential in spontaneous baryogenesis

Models of spontaneous baryogenesis have an interaction term $\partial_μθj^μ_B$ in the Lagrangian, where $j^μ_B$ is the baryonic current and $θ$ can be a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. Since the time component of this term, $\dotθ j^0_B$, equals $\dotθ n_B$ for a spatially homogeneous current, it is usually argued that this term implies a splitting in the energy of baryons and antibaryons thereby providing an effective chemical potential for baryon number. In thermal equilibrium, one {then obtains} $n_B \sim \dotθ T^2$. We however argue that a term of this form in the Lagrangian does not contribute to the single particle energies of baryons and antibaryons. We show this for both fermionic and scalar baryons. But, similar to some recent work, we find that despite the above result the baryon number density obtained from a Boltzmann equation analysis can be proportional to $\dotθ T^2$. Our arguments are very different from that in the standard literature on spontaneous baryogenesis.

Revisiting CMB constraints on Warm Inflation

We revisit the constraints that Planck 2015 temperature, polarization and lensing data impose on the parameters of warm inflation. To this end, we study warm inflation driven by a single scalar field with a quartic self interaction potential in the weak dissipative regime. We analyse the effect of the parameters of warm inflation, namely, the inflaton self coupling $λ$ and the inflaton dissipation parameter $Q_P$ on the CMB angular power spectrum. We constrain $λ$ and $Q_P$ for 50 and 60 number of e-foldings with the full Planck 2015 data (TT, TE, EE + lowP and lensing) by performing a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo analysis using the publicly available code {\tt CosmoMC} and obtain the joint as well as marginalized distributions of those parameters. We present our results in the form of mean and 68 \% confidence limits on the parameters and also highlight the degeneracy between $λ$ and $Q_P$ in our analysis. From this analysis we show how warm inflation parameters can be well constrained using the Planck 2015 data.

Common Origin of $3.55$ keV X-ray line and Gauge Coupling Unification with Left-Right Dark Matter

We present a minimal left-right dark matter framework that can simultaneously explain the recently observed 3.55 keV X-ray line from several galaxy clusters and gauge coupling unification at high energy scale. Adopting a minimal dark matter strategy, we consider both left and right handed triplet fermionic dark matter candidates which are stable by virtue of a remnant $\mathcal{Z}_2\simeq (-1)^{B-L}$ symmetry arising after the spontaneous symmetry breaking of left-right gauge symmetry to that of the standard model. A scalar bitriplet field is incorporated whose first role is to allow radiative decay of right handed triplet dark matter into the left handed one and a photon with energy 3.55 keV. The other role this bitriplet field at TeV scale plays is to assist in achieving gauge coupling unification at a high energy scale within a non-supersymmetric $SO(10)$ model while keeping the scale of left-right gauge symmetry around the TeV corner. Apart from solving the neutrino mass problem and giving verifiable new contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay and charged lepton flavour violation, the model with TeV scale gauge bosons can also give rise to interesting collider signatures like diboson excess, dilepton plus two jets excess reported recently in the large hadron collider data.

Multi-component Fermionic Dark Matter and IceCube PeV scale Neutrinos in Left-Right Model with Gauge Unification

We consider a simple extension of the minimal left-right symmetric model (LRSM) in order to explain the PeV neutrino events seen at the IceCube experiment from a heavy decaying dark matter. The dark matter sector is composed of two fermions: one at PeV scale and the other at TeV scale such that the heavier one can decay into the lighter one and two neutrinos. The gauge annihilation cross sections of PeV dark matter are not large enough to generate its relic abundance within the observed limit. We include a pair of real scalar triplets $Ω_{L,R}$ which can bring the thermally overproduced PeV dark matter abundance into the observed range through late time decay and consequent entropy release thereby providing a consistent way to obtain the correct relic abundance without violating the unitarity bound on dark matter mass. Another scalar field, a bitriplet under left-right gauge group is added to assist the heavier dark matter decay. The presence of an approximate global $U(1)_X$ symmetry can naturally explain the origin of tiny couplings required for long-lived nature of these decaying particles. We also show, how such an extended LRSM can be incorporated within a non-supersymmetric $SO(10)$ model where the gauge coupling unification at a very high scale naturally accommodate a PeV scale intermediate symmetry, required to explain the PeV events at IceCube.

Naturally Light Dirac Neutrino in Left-Right Symmetric Model

We study the possibility of generating tiny Dirac masses of neutrinos in Left-Right Symmetric Model (LRSM) without requiring the existence of any additional symmetries. The charged fermions acquire masses through a universal seesaw mechanism due to the presence of additional vector like fermions. The neutrinos acquire a one-loop Dirac mass from the same additional vector like charged leptons without requiring any additional discrete symmetries. The model can also be extended by an additional $Z_2$ symmetry in order to have a scotogenic version of this scenario predicting a stable dark matter candidate. We show that the latest Planck upper bound on the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom $N_{\text{eff}}=3.15 \pm 0.23$ tightly constrains the right sector gauge boson masses to be heavier than 3.548 TeV. This bound on gauge boson mass also affects the allowed values of right scalar doublet dark matter mass from the requirement of satisfying the Planck bound on dark matter relic abundance. We also discuss the possible implications of such a scenario in charged lepton flavour violation and generating observable electric dipole moment of leptons.

Observable Lepton Number Violation with Predominantly Dirac Nature of Active Neutrinos

We study a specific version of $SU(2)_R \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_{B-L}$ models extended by discrete symmetries where the new physics sector responsible for tiny neutrino masses at leading order remains decoupled from the new physics sector that can give rise to observable signatures of lepton number violation such as neutrinoless double beta decay. More specifically, the dominant contribution to light neutrino masses comes from a one-loop Dirac mass. At higher loop level, a tiny Majorana mass also appears which remains suppressed by many order of magnitudes in comparison to the Dirac mass. Such a model where the active neutrinos are predominantly of Dirac type, also predicts observable charged lepton flavour violation like $μ\rightarrow 3e, μ\rightarrow e γ$ and multi-component dark matter.

Common Origin of Neutrino Mass, Dark Matter and Dirac Leptogenesis

We study the possibility of generating tiny Dirac neutrino masses at one loop level through the \textit{scotogenic} mechanism such that one of the particles going inside the loop can be a stable cold dark matter (DM) candidate. Majorana mass terms of singlet fermions as well as tree level Dirac neutrino masses are prevented by incorporating the presence of additional discrete symmetries in a minimal fashion, which also guarantee the stability of the dark matter candidate. Due to the absence of total lepton number violation, the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe is generated through the mechanism of Dirac leptogenesis where an equal and opposite amount of leptonic asymmetry is generated in the left and right handed sectors which are prevented from equilibration due to tiny Dirac Yukawa couplings. Dark matter relic abundance is generated through its usual freeze-out at a temperature much below the scale of leptogenesis. We constrain the relevant parameter space from neutrino mass, baryon asymmetry, Planck bound on dark matter relic abundance, and latest LUX bound on spin independent DM-nucleon scattering cross section. We also discuss the charged lepton flavour violation $(μ\rightarrow e γ)$ and electric dipole moment of electron in this model in the light of the latest experimental data and constrain the parameter space of the model.

Limiting the Effective Mass and New Physics Parameters from $0νββ$

In the light of the recent result from KamLAND-Zen (KLZ) and GERDA Phase-II, we update the bounds on the effective mass and the new physics parameters, relevant for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$). In addition to the light Majorana neutrino exchange, we analyze beyond standard model contributions that arise in Left-Right symmetry and R-Parity violating supersymmetry. The improved limit from KLZ constrains the effective mass of light neutrino exchange down to sub-eV mass regime 0.06 eV. Using the correlation between the $^{136}\rm{Xe}$ and $^{76}\rm{Ge}$ half-lives, we show that the KLZ limit individually rules out the positive claim of observation of $0νββ$ for all nuclear matrix element compilation. For the Left-Right symmetry and R-parity violating supersymmetry, the KLZ bound implies a factor of 2 improvement of the effective mass and the new physics parameters. The future ton scale experiments such as, nEXO will further constrain these models, in particular, will rule out standard as well as Type-II dominating LRSM inverted hierarchy scenario.

Charged Lepton Flavour Violation and Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in Left-Right Symmetric Models with Type I+II Seesaw

We study the new physics contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) half-life and lepton flavour violation (LFV) amplitude within the framework of the minimal left-right symmetric model (MLRSM). Considering all possible new physics contributions to $0νββ$ and charged lepton flavour violation $μ\rightarrow e γ, μ\rightarrow 3e$ in MLRSM, we constrain the parameter space of the model from the requirement of satisfying existing experimental bounds. Assuming the breaking scale of the left-right symmetry to be $\mathcal{O}(1)$ TeV accessible at ongoing and near future collider experiments, we consider the most general type I+II seesaw mechanism for the origin of tiny neutrino masses. Choosing the relative contribution of the type II seesaw term allows us to calculate the right handed neutrino mass matrix as well as Dirac neutrino mass matrix as a function of the model parameters, required for the calculation of $0νββ$ and LFV amplitudes. We show that such a general type I+II seesaw structure results in more allowed parameter space compared to individual type I or type II seesaw cases considered in earlier works. In particular, we show that the doubly charged scalar masses $M_Δ$ are allowed to be smaller than the heaviest right handed neutrino mass $M_N$ from the present experimental bounds in these scenarios which is in contrast to earlier results with individual type I or type II seesaw showing $M_Δ > M_N$.

A minimal model of TeV scale WIMPy leptogenesis

We present a minimal framework of $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge extension of the Standard Model explaining dark matter abundance and matter-antimatter asymmetry simultaneously through an attractive mechanism of TeV scale WIMPy leptogenesis, testable at the current and next generation of colliders. This framework can also explain small neutrino masses via a radiative mechanism. One of the key predictions of this model is an enhanced rate for lepton flavor violating decay $μ\rightarrow e γ$ within the sensitivity reach of next generation experiments.

Effective Field Theory of Dark Matter from membrane inflationary paradigm

In this article, we have studied the cosmological and particle physics constraints on dark matter relic abundance from effective field theory of inflation using tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r$), in case of Randall-Sundrum single membrane (RSII) paradigm. Using semi-analytical approach we establish a direct connection between the dark matter relic abundance ($Ω_{DM}h^2$) and primordial gravity waves ($r$), which establishes a precise connection between inflation and generation of dark matter within the framework of effective field theory in RSII membrane. Further assuming the UV completeness of the effective field theory perfectly holds good in the prescribed framework, we have explicitly shown that the membrane tension, $σ$, bulk mass scale $M_5$, and cosmological constant $\tildeΛ_{5}$, in RSII membrane plays the most significant role to establish the connection between dark matter and inflation, using which we have studied the features of various mediator mass scale suppressed effective field theory "relevant operators" induced from the localized $s$, $t$ and $u$ channel interactions. Taking a completely model independent approach, we have studied an exhaustive list of tree-level Feynman diagrams for dark matter annihilation within the prescribed setup and to check the consistency of the obtained results, further we apply the constraints as obtained from recently observed Planck 2015 data and Planck+BICEP2+Keck Array joint datasets. Using all of these derived results we have shown that to satisfy the bound on, $Ω_{DM}h^2=0.1187\pm 0.0017$, as from Planck 2015 data, it is possible to put further stringent constraint on $r$ within, $0.01\leq r\leq 0.12$, for thermally averaged annihilation cross-section of dark matter, $\langle σv\rangle\approx {\cal O}(10^{-28}-10^{-27}){\rm cm^3 /s}$, which are very useful to constrain various membrane inflationary models.

Discovery Potential of T2K and NOvA in the Presence of a Light Sterile Neutrino

We study the impact of one light sterile neutrino on the prospective data expected to come from the two presently running long-baseline experiments T2K and NOvA when they will accumulate their full planned exposure. Introducing for the first time, the bi-probability representation in the 4-flavor framework, commonly used in the 3-flavor scenario, we present a detailed discussion of the behavior of the numu to nue and numubar to nuebar transition probabilities in the 3+1 scheme. We also perform a detailed sensitivity study of these two experiments (both in the stand-alone and combined modes) to assess their discovery reach in the presence of a light sterile neutrino. For realistic benchmark values of the mass-mixing parameters (as inferred from the existing global short-baseline fits), we find that the performance of both these experiments in claiming the discovery of the CP-violation induced by the standard CP-phase delta13 equivalent to delta, and the neutrino mass hierarchy get substantially deteriorated. The exact loss of sensitivity depends on the value of the unknown CP-phase delta14. Finally, we estimate the discovery potential of total CP-violation (i.e., induced simultaneously by the two CP-phases delta13 and delta14), and the capability of the two experiments of reconstructing the true values of such CP-phases. The typical (1 sigma level) uncertainties on the reconstructed phases are approximately 40 degree for delta13 and 50 degree for delta14.

Exploring Flavor-Dependent Long-Range Forces in Long-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

The Standard Model gauge group can be extended with minimal matter content by introducing anomaly free U(1) symmetry, such as $L_e-L_μ$ or $L_e-L_τ$. If the neutral gauge boson corresponding to this abelian symmetry is ultra-light, then it will give rise to flavor-dependent long-range leptonic force, which can have significant impact on neutrino oscillations. For an instance, the electrons inside the Sun can generate a flavor-dependent long-range potential at the Earth surface, which can suppress the $ν_μ \to ν_e$ appearance probability in terrestrial experiments. The sign of this potential is opposite for anti-neutrinos, and affects the oscillations of (anti-)neutrinos in different fashion. This feature invokes fake CP-asymmetry like the SM matter effect and can severely affect the leptonic CP-violation searches in long-baseline experiments. In this paper, we study in detail the possible impacts of these long-range flavor-diagonal neutral current interactions due to $L_e-L_μ$ symmetry, when (anti-)neutrinos travel from Fermilab to Homestake (1300 km) and CERN to Pyhäsalmi (2290 km) in the context of future high-precision superbeam facilities, DUNE and LBNO respectively. If there is no signal of long-range force, DUNE (LBNO) can place stringent constraint on the effective gauge coupling $α_{eμ} < 1.9 \times 10^{-53}~(7.8 \times 10^{-54})$ at 90% C.L., which is almost 30 (70) times better than the existing bound from the Super-Kamiokande experiment. We also observe that if $α_{eμ} \geq 2 \times 10^{-52}$, the CP-violation discovery reach of these future facilities vanishes completely. The mass hierarchy measurement remains robust in DUNE (LBNO) if $α_{eμ} < 5 \times 10^{-52}~(10^{-52})$.
