Elastocapillary Snapping: Capillarity Induces Snap-Through Instabilities in Small Elastic Beams

We report on the capillary-induced snapping of elastic beams. We show that a millimeter-sized water drop gently deposited on a thin buckled polymer strip may trigger an elastocapillary snap-through instability. We investigate experimentally and theoretically the statics and dynamics of this phenomenon and we further demonstrate that snapping can act against gravity, or be induced by soap bubbles on centimeter-sized thin metal strips. We argue that this phenomenon is suitable to miniaturization and design a condensation-induced spin-off version of the experiment involving an hydrophilic strip placed in a steam flow.

Liquid jet eruption from hollow relaxation

A cavity hollowed out on a free liquid surface is relaxing, forming an intense liquid jet. Using a model experiment where a short air pulse sculpts an initial large crater, we depict the different stages in the gravitational cavity collapse and in the jet formation. Prior eversion, all cavity profiles are found to exhibit a shape similarity. Following hollow relaxation, a universal scaling law establishing an unexpected relation between the jet eruption velocity, the initial cavity geometry and the liquid viscosity is evidenced experimentally. On further analysing the jet forms we demonstrate that the stretched liquid jet also presents shape similarity. Considering that the jet shape is a signature of the initial flow focusing, we elaborate a simple model capturing the key features of the erupting jet velocity scaling.

Elasto-capillary meniscus: Pulling out a soft strip sticking to a liquid surface

A liquid surface touching a solid usually deforms in a near-wall meniscus region. In this work, we replace part of the free surface with a soft polymer and examine the shape of this elasto-capillary meniscus, result of the interplay between elasticity, capillarity and hydrostatic pressure. We focus particularly on the extraction threshold for the soft object. Indeed, we demonstrate both experimentally and theoretically the existence of a limit height of liquid tenable before breakdown of the compound, and extraction of the object. Such an extraction force is known since Laplace and Gay-Lussac, but only in the context of rigid floating objects. We revisit this classical problem by adding the elastic ingredient and predict the extraction force in terms of the strip elastic properties. It is finally shown that the critical force can be increased with elasticity, as is commonplace in adhesion phenomena

The bending of an elastic beam by a liquid drop: A variational approach

We study the interaction of a liquid drop with an elastic beam in the case where bending effects dominate. We use a variational approach to derive equilibrium equations for the system in the presence of gravity and in the presence or absence of contact line pinning. We show that the derived equilibrium equations for the beam subsystem reveal the external forces applied on the beam by the liquid and vapor phases. Among these, the force applied at the triple line (the curve where the three phases meet) is found to lie along the liquid-vapor interface.

Jets from Hollows

This fluid dynamics video presents the gravity-driven jets induced by the relaxation of large prolate bubbles or large holes at a free liquid surface. It shows that the jet developing inside a bubble can be strong enough to give rise to liquid projections shooting out way above the free surface.

Large bubble rupture sparks fast liquid jet

This Letter presents the novel experimental observation of long and narrow jets shooting out in disconnecting large elongated bubbles. We investigate this phenomenon by carrying out experiments with various viscosities, surface tensions, densities and nozzle radii. We propose a universal scaling law for the jet velocity, which unexpectedly involves the bubble height to the power 3/2. This anomalous exponent suggests an energy focusing phenomenon. We demonstrate experimentally that this focusing is purely gravity-driven and independent of the pinch-off singularity.
