Vector bundles on curves and theta functions

This is a (short) survey lecture on the "theta map" from the moduli space of SL_r bundles on a curve C to the projective space of r-th order theta functions on JC . Some recent results and a few open problems about that map are discussed.

Vector bundles and theta functions on curves of genus 2 and 3

Let C be a curve of genus g, and let SU(r) be the moduli space of vector bundles of rank r on C, with trivial determinant. A general E in SU(r) defines a theta divisor in the linear system |r Theta|, where Theta is the canonical theta divisor in Pic^{g-1}(C). This defines a rational map SU(r) - - > |r Theta|, which is the map associated to the determinant bundle on SU(r) (the positive generator of Pic(SU(r)). In this paper we prove that in genus 2 this map is generically finite and dominant. The same method, together with some classical work of Morin, shows that in rank 3 and genus 3 the theta map is a finite morphism -- in other words, every E in SU(3) admits a theta divisor.

On the splitting of the Bloch-Beilinson filtration

For a smooth projective variety X, let CH(X) be the Chow ring (with rational coefficients) of algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence. The conjectures of Bloch and Beilinson predict the existence of a functorial ring filtration of CH(X). We want to investigate for which varieties this filtration splits, that is, comes from a graduation on CH(X) -- this occurs for K3 surfaces and, conjecturally, for abelian varieties. We observe that, though the Bloch-Beilinson filtration is only conjectural, the fact that it splits has some simple consequences which can be tested in concrete examples. Namely, for a regular variety X, it implies that the sub-Q-algebra of CH(X) spanned by divisor classes injects into the cohomology of X . We give examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds which do not satisfy this property. On the other hand we conjecture that the property does indeed hold for (holomorphic) symplectic manifolds, and we give some (weak) evidence in favour of this conjecture.

La conjecture de Green generique [d'apres C. Voisin]

This is the text of my lecture (in french) at the Bourbaki Seminar (november 2003) on the proof by Claire Voisin of the Green conjecture for a generic curve. This conjecture predicts the structure of the minimal resolution of the ideal of a canonically embedded curve in terms of the existence of certain special linear systems on the curve.

The Coble hypersurfaces

Let A be an indecomposable principally polarized abelian variety of dimension g . Third order theta functions embed A in a projective space P(V_3), while second order theta functions embed the Kummer variety K=A/<-1> in a projective space P(V_2). Coble observed that for g = 2 there is a unique cubic hypersurface in P(V_3) that is singular along A, and for g = 3 a unique quartic hypersurface in P(V_2) singular along K . We explain these facts by a simple analysis of the representations of the corresponding Heisenberg group.

Fano threefolds and K3 surfaces

We discuss in this note which K3 surfaces appear as anticanonical divisors in a Fano threefold. We prove in particular that a general K3 surface with given Picard lattice P and polarization class h in P is an anticanonical divisor in a Fano threefold if and only if (P,h) is isomorphic to (Pic(V), c_1(V)) for some Fano threefold V, where Pic(V) is equipped with the intersection product (L,M) --> (L.M.c_1(V)).

Some stable vector bundles with reducible theta divisors

Let C be a curve of genus g and L a line bundle of degree 2g on C . Let M be the kernel of the evaluation map from the trivial bundle with fibre H^0(C,L) into L . We show that when L is general enough, the rank g bundle M and its exterior powers are stable and admit a reducible theta divisor.

Algebraic cycles on Jacobian varieties

Let J be the Jacobian of a smooth curve C of genus g, and let A(J) be the ring of algebraic cycles modulo algebraic equivalence on J, tensored with Q. We study in this paper the smallest Q-vector subspace R of A(J) which contains C and is stable under the natural operations of A(J) : intersection and Pontryagin products, pull back and push down under multiplication by integers. We prove that this "tautological subring" is generated (over Q) by the classes of the subvarieties W_1=C, W_2=C+C, ..., W_{g-1}. If C admits a morphism of degree d onto P^1, we prove that the last d-1 classes suffice.

The Chow ring of a K3 surface

Let X be a K3 surface. We show that the Chow group CH_0(X) of 0-cycles contains a "fundamental class" c_X of degree 1 with remarkable properties: any product of divisors is proportional to this class, and so is the second Chern class c_2(X). This preprint supersedes the preprint math.AG/0109063 by the first author, where the latter property was conjectured.

The Szpiro inequality for higher genus fibrations

Let f : S --> B be a non-trivial family of semi-stable curves of genus g, N the number of critical points of f and s the number of singular fibres. We prove the inequality N < (4g+2)(s+2g(B)-2) .

On the Chow ring of a K3 surface

Though the Chow group of 0-cycles on a K3 surface is quite large, we observe that the subgroup generated by product of divisors is cyclic.

Chern classes for representations of reductive groups

Let G be a complex connected reductive group. The representation ring R(G) admits a canonical filtration defined in terms of the lambda-structure. We compute the associated graded ring gr R(G) (over Q) and the Chern classes of a representation -- an easy exercise which we have been unable to find in the literature. As an application we give a simple definition of the characteristic classes of a principal bundle P --> B in gr K(B), and a simple way of computing the Chern classes of the associated vector bundles.

Vector bundles on the cubic threefold

Let X be a smooth cubic threefold, M the moduli space of stable rank 2 vector bundles on X with trivial determinant and c_2=2 (the smallest value for which this space is non-empty). Recent results of Druel, Iliev, Markushevich and Tikhomirov lead to a precise description of M and its Maruyama compactification M': the latter is isomorphic to the intermediate Jacobian of X blown-up along the Fano surface. In this survey paper we explain these results and discuss some applications.

Complex manifolds with split tangent bundle

Let X be a compact Kaehler manifold. We expect that any direct sum decomposition of the tangent bundle T(X) comes from a splitting of the universal covering space of X as a product of manifolds, in such a way that the given decomposition of T(X) lifts to the canonical decomposition of the tangent bundle of a product. We prove this assertion when X is a Kaehler-Einstein manifold or a Kaehler surface. Simple examples show that the Kaehler hypothesis is necessary.

Fano contact manifolds and nilpotent orbits

A contact structure on a complex manifold M is a corank 1 subbundle F of T(M) such that the bilinear form on F with values in the quotient line bundle L=T(M)/F deduced from the Lie bracket of vector fields is everywhere non-degenerate. In this paper we consider the case where M is a Fano manifold; this implies that L is ample. If g is a simple Lie algebra, the unique closed orbit in P(g) (for the adjoint action) is a Fano contact manifold; it is conjectured that every Fano contact manifold is obtained in this way. A positive answer would imply an analogous result for compact quaternion-Kahler manifolds with positive scalar curvature, a longstanding question in Riemannian geometry. In this paper we solve the conjecture under the additional assumptions that the group of contact automorphisms of M is reductive, and that the image of the rational map M - - -> P(H0(M,L)*) associated to L has maximum dimension. The proof relies on the properties of the nilpotent orbits in a semi-simple Lie algebra, in particular on the work of R. Brylinski and B. Kostant.

Counting rational curves on K3 surfaces

The aim of these notes is to explain the remarkable formula found by Yau and Zaslow to express the number of rational curves on a K3 surface. Projective K3 surfaces fall into countably many families F(g) (g>0); a surface in F(g) admits a g-dimensional linear system of curves of genus g. Such a system contains a positive number, say n(g), of rational (highly singular) curves. The formula is \sum n(g) q^g = q/D((q), where D(q) = q \prod (1-q^n)^{24} is the well-known modular form of weight 12.

The Verlinde formula for PGL(p)

Let G be a complex semi-simple group, X a Riemann surface, M_G the moduli space of principal G-bundles on X. When G is simply-connected, there exists a closed formula expressing the dimension of the space H^0(M_G,L) for any line bundle L on M_G (this is usually called among mathematicians, somewhat incorrectly, the "Verlinde formula").In this paper we find an analogous formula for G = PGL(r) where r is prime.
