Parsimonious Description of Generalized Gibbs Measures : Decimation of the 2d-Ising Model

In this paper, we detail and complete the existing characterizations of the decimation of the Ising model on $\Z^2$ in the generalized Gibbs context. We first recall a few features of the Dobrushin program of restoration of Gibbsianness and present the construction of global specifications consistent with the extremal decimated measures. We use them to consider these renormalized measures as almost Gibbsian measures and to precise its convex set of DLR measures. We also recall the weakly Gibbsian description and complete it using a potential that admits a quenched correlation decay, i.e. a well-defined configuration-dependent length beyond which this potential decays exponentially. We use these results to incorporate these decimated measures in the new framework of parsimonious random fields that has been recently developed to investigate probability aspects related to neurosciences.

Range of a Transient 2d-Random Walk

We study the range of a planar random walk on a randomly oriented lattice, already known to be transient. We prove that the expectation of the range grows linearly, in both the quenched (for a.e. orientation) and annealed ("averaged") cases. We also express the rate of growth in terms of the quenched Green function and eventually prove a weak law of large numbers in the (non-Markovian) annealed case.

Introduction to (generalized) Gibbs measures

These notes have been written to complete a mini-course "Introduction to (generalized) Gibbs measures" given at the universities UFMG (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brasil) and UFRGS (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brasil) during the first semester 2007. The main goal of the lectures was to describe Gibbs and generalized Gibbs measures on lattices at a rigorous mathematical level, as equilibirum states of systems of a huge number of particles in interaction. In particular, our main message is that although the historical approach based on potentials has been rather successful from a physical point of view, one has to insist on (almost sure) continuity properties of conditional probabilities to get a proper mathematical framework.

A functional limit theorem for a 2D-random walk with dependent marginals

We prove a non-standard functional limit theorem for a two dimensional simple random walk on some randomly oriented lattices. This random walk, already known to be transient, has different horizontal and vertical fluctuations leading to different normalizations in the functional limit theorem, with a non-Gaussian horizontal behavior. We also prove that the horizontal and vertical components are not asymptotically independent.

Transient random walks on 2d-oriented lattices

We study the asymptotic behavior of the simple random walk on oriented versions of $\mathbb{Z}^2$. The considered lattices are not directed on the vertical axis but unidirectional on the horizontal one, with random orientations whose distributions are generated by a dynamical system. We find a sufficient condition on the smoothness of the generation for the transience of the simple random walk on almost every such oriented lattices, and as an illustration we provide a wide class of examples of inhomogeneous or correlated distributions of the orientations. For ergodic dynamical systems, we also prove a strong law of large numbers and, in the particular case of i.i.d. orientations, we solve an open problem and prove a functional limit theorem in a corresponding space D of cadlag functions, with an unconventional normalization.

Relative entropy and variational properties of generalized Gibbsian measures

We study the relative entropy density for generalized Gibbs measures. We first show its existence and obtain a familiar expression in terms of entropy and relative energy for a class of ``almost Gibbsian measures'' (almost sure continuity of conditional probabilities). For quasilocal measures, we obtain a full variational principle. For the joint measures of the random field Ising model, we show that the weak Gibbs property holds, with an almost surely rapidly decaying translation-invariant potential. For these measures we show that the variational principle fails as soon as the measures lose the almost Gibbs property. These examples suggest that the class of weakly Gibbsian measures is too broad from the perspective of a reasonable thermodynamic formalism.

Random walks on FKG-horizontally oriented lattices

We study the asymptotic behavior of the simple random walk on oriented version of $\mathbb{Z}^2$. The considered latticesare not directed on the vertical axis but unidirectional on the horizontal one, with symmetric random orientations which are positively correlated. We prove that the simple random walk is transient and also prove a functionnal limit theorem in the space of cadlag functions, with an unconventional normalization.

Variational principle for generalized Gibbsian measures

We study the thermodynamic formalism for generalized Gibbs measures, such as renormalization group transformations of Gibbs measures or joint measures of disordered spin systems. We first show existence of the relative entropy density and obtain a familiar expression in terms of entropy and relative energy for "almost Gibbsian measures" (almost sure continuity of conditional probabilities). We also describe these measures as equilibrium states and establish an extension of the usual variational principle. As a corollary, we obtain a full variational principle for quasilocal measures. For the joint measures of the random field Ising model, we show that the weak Gibbs property holds, with an almost surely rapidly decaying translation invariant potential. For these measures we show that the variational principle fails as soon as the measures loses the almost Gibbs property. These examples suggest that the class of weakly Gibbsian measures is too broad from the perspective of a reasonable thermodynamic formalism.

Variational principle and almost quasilocality for some renormalized measures

We restore part of the thermodynamic formalism for some renormalized measures that are known to be non-Gibbsian. We first point out that a recent theory due to Pfister implies that for block-transformed measures free energies and relative entropy densities exist and are conjugate convex functionals. We then determine a necessary and sufficient condition for consistency with a specification that is quasilocal in a fixed direction. As corollaries we obtain consistency results for models with FKG monotonicity and for models with appropriate "continuity rates". For (noisy) decimations or projections of the Ising model, these results imply almost quasilocality of the decimated "+" and "-" measures.
