Dirichlet control problems with energy regularization governed by non-coercive elliptic equations

The present study investigates a linear-quadratic Dirichlet control problem governed by a non-coercive elliptic equation posed on a possibly non-convex polygonal domain. Tikhonov regularization is carried out in an energy seminorm. The regularity of the solutions is established in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces, and the finite element discretization of the problem is analyzed. In order to recover the optimal rate of convergence in polygonal non-convex domains, graded meshes are required. In addressing this particular problem, it is also necessary to introduce a discrete projection in the sense of $H^{1/2}(Γ)$ to deal with the non-homogeneous boundary condition. A thorough examination of the approximation properties of the discrete controls reveals that the discrete problems are strongly convex uniformly with respect to the discretization parameter. All these ingredients lead to optimal error estimates. Practical computational considerations and numerical examples are discussed at the end of the paper.

Second-order Optimality Conditions for Time-Optimal Control Problems Governed by Semilinear Parabolic Equations

A class of time-optimal control problems governed by semilinear parabolic equations with mixed pointwise constraints and final point constraints is considered. By introducing the so-called locally optimal solution to time-optimal control problems, we establish first and second-order necessary optimality conditions of KKT-type and second-order sufficient conditions for locally optimal solutions to the problem.

Non-coercive Neumann boundary control problems

The article examines a linear-quadratic Neumann control problem that is governed by a non-coercive elliptic equation. Due to the non-self-adjoint nature of the linear control-to-state operator, it is necessary to independently study both the state and adjoint state equations. The article establishes the existence and uniqueness of solutions for both equations, with minimal assumptions made about the problem's data. Next, the regularity of these solutions is studied in three frameworks: Hilbert-Sobolev spaces, Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces, and weighted Sobolev spaces. These regularity results enable a numerical analysis of the finite element approximation of both the state and adjoint state equations. The results cover both convex and non-convex domains and quasi-uniform and graded meshes. Finally, the optimal control problem is analyzed and discretized. Existence and uniqueness of the solution, first-order optimality conditions, and error estimates for the finite element approximation of the control are obtained. Numerical experiments confirming these results are included. A significant highlight is that the discretization error estimates known from the literature, are improved even for the coercive case.

Numerical analysis of a nonsmooth quasilinear elliptic control problem: II. Finite element discretization and error estimates

In this paper, we carry out the numerical analysis of a nonsmooth quasilinear elliptic optimal control problem, where the coefficient in the divergence term of the corresponding state equation is not differentiable with respect to the state variable. Despite the lack of differentiability of the nonlinearity in the quasilinear elliptic equation, the corresponding control-to-state operator is of class $C^1$ but not of class $C^2$. Analogously, the discrete control-to-state operators associated with the approximated control problems are proven to be of class $C^1$ only. By using an explicit second-order sufficient optimality condition, we prove a priori error estimates for a variational approximation, a piecewise constant approximation, and a continuous piecewise linear approximation of the continuous optimal control problem. The numerical tests confirm these error estimates.

Numerical analysis of a nonsmooth quasilinear elliptic control problem: I. Explicit second-order optimality conditions

In this paper, we derive explicit second-order necessary and sufficient optimality conditions of a local minimizer to an optimal control problem for a quasilinear second-order partial differential equation with a piecewise smooth but not differentiable nonlinearity in the leading term. The key argument rests on the analysis of level sets of the state. Specifically, we show that if a function vanishes on the boundary and its the gradient is different from zero on a level set, then this set decomposes into finitely many closed simple curves. Moreover, the level sets depend continuously on the functions defining these sets. We also prove the continuity of the integrals on the level sets. In particular, Green's first identity is shown to be applicable on an open set determined by two functions with nonvanishing gradients. In the second part to this paper, the explicit sufficient second-order conditions will be used to derive error estimates for a finite-element discretization of the control problem.

No-gap second-order optimality conditions for optimal control of a non-smooth quasilinear elliptic equation

This paper deals with second-order optimality conditions for a quasilinear elliptic control problem with a nonlinear coefficient in the principal part that is countably $PC^2$ (continuous and $C^2$ apart from countably many points). We prove that the control-to-state operator is continuously differentiable even though the nonlinear coefficient is non-smooth. This enables us to establish "no-gap" second-order necessary and sufficient optimality conditions in terms of an abstract curvature functional, i. e., for which the sufficient condition only differs from the necessary one in the fact that the inequality is strict. A condition that is equivalent to the second-order sufficient optimality condition and could be useful for error estimates in, e.g., finite element discretizations is also provided.

Analysis of control problems of nonmontone semilinear elliptic equations

In this paper we study optimal control problems governed by a semilinear elliptic equation. The equation is nonmonotone due to the presence of a convection term, despite the monotonocity of the nonlinear term. The resulting operator is neither monotone nor coervive. However, by using conveniently a comparison principle we prove existence and uniqueness of solution for the state equation. In addition, we prove some regularity of the solution and differentiability of the relation control-to-state. This allows us to derive first and second order conditions for local optimality.

A priori error estimates for the space-time finite element approximation of a non-smooth optimal control problem governed by a coupled semilinear PDE-ODE system

In this paper we investigate a priori error estimates for the space-time Galerkin finite element discretization of a simplified semilinear gradient enhanced damage model. The model equations are of a special structure as the state equation consists of an elliptic PDE which has to be fulfilled at almost all times coupled with a non-smooth, semilinear ODE that has to hold true in almost all points in space. The system is discretized by a constant discontinuous Galerkin method in time and usual conforming linear finite elements in space. For the uncontrolled equation, we prove linear convergence in time and an order of $\mathcal{O}(h^{\frac{3}{2}-\varepsilon})$ for the discretization error in space. Our main result regarding the optimal control problem is the uniform convergence of dG(0)cG(1)-discrete controls to $l\in H^1_{\{0\}}(0,T;L^2(Ω))$. Error estimates for the controls are established via a quadratic growth condition. Numerical experiments are added to illustrate the proven rates of convergence.

A priori error estimates for the space-time finite element discretization of an optimal control problem governed by a coupled linear PDE-ODE system

In this paper we investigate a priori error estimates for the space-time Galerkin finite element discretization of an optimal control problem governed by a simplified linear gradient enhanced damage model. The model equations are of a special structure as the state equation consists of an elliptic PDE which has to be fulfilled at almost all times coupled with an ODE that has to hold true in almost all points in space. The state equation is discretized by a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method in time and usual conforming linear finite elements in space. For the discretization of the control we employ the same discretization technique which turns out to be equivalent to a variational discretization approach. We provide error estimates of optimal order both for the discretization of the state equation as well as for the optimal control. Numerical experiments are added to illustrate the proven rates of convergence.

Optimal control of a non-smooth quasilinear elliptic equation

This work is concerned with an optimal control problem governed by a non-smooth quasilinear elliptic equation with a nonlinear coefficient in the principal part that is locally Lipschitz continuous and directionally but not Gâteaux differentiable. This leads to a control-to-state operator that is directionally but not Gâteaux differentiable as well. Based on a suitable regularization scheme, we derive C- and strong stationarity conditions. Under the additional assumption that the nonlinearity is a PC^1 function with countably many points of nondifferentiability, we show that both conditions are equivalent. Furthermore, under this assumption we derive a relaxed optimality system that is amenable to numerical solution using a semi-smooth Newton method. This is illustrated by numerical examples.

Error estimates for Dirichlet control problems in polygonal domains

The paper deals with finite element approximations of elliptic Dirichlet boundary control problems posed on two-dimensional polygonal domains. Error estimates are derived for the approximation of the control and the state variables. Special features of unconstrained and control constrained problems as well as general quasi-uniform meshes and superconvergence meshes are carefully elaborated. Compared to existing results, the convergence rates for the control variable are not only improved but also fully explain the observed orders of convergence in the literature. Moreover, for the first time, results in non-convex domains are provided.

Error estimates for joint Tikhonov- and Lavrentiev-regularization of constrained control problems

We consider joint Tikhonov- and Lavrentiev-regularization of control problems with pointwise control- and state-constraints. We derive error estimates for the error which is introduced by the Tikhonov regularization. With the help of this results we show, that if the solution of the unconstrained problem has no active constraints, the same holds for the Tikhonov-regularized solution if the regularization parameter is small enough and a certain source condition is fulfilled.
