Paucity of rational points on fibrations with multiple fibres

Given a family of varieties over the projective line, we study the density of fibres that are everywhere locally soluble in the case that components of higher multiplicity are allowed. We use log geometry to formulate a new sparsity criterion for the existence of everywhere locally soluble fibres and formulate new conjectures that generalise previous work of Loughran-Smeets. These conjectures involve geometric invariants of the associated multiplicity orbifolds on the base of the fibration in the spirit of Campana. We give evidence for the conjectures using Chebotarev's theorem and sieve methods.

Logarithmic good reduction and the index

Let $K$ be the fraction field of a complete discrete valuation ring, with algebraically closed residue field of characteristic $p > 0$. This paper studies the index of a smooth, proper $K$-variety $X$ with logarithmic good reduction. We prove that it is prime to $p$ in `most' cases, for example if the Euler number of $X$ does not vanish, but (perhaps surprisingly) not always. We also fully characterise curves of genus $1$ with logarithmic good reduction, thereby completing classical results of T. Saito and Stix valid for curves of genus at least $2$.

Failure of the Brauer-Manin principle for a simply connected fourfold over a global function field, via orbifold Mordell

Almost one decade ago, Poonen constructed the first examples of algebraic varieties over global fields for which Skorobogatov's etale Brauer-Manin obstruction does not explain the failure of the Hasse principle. By now, several constructions are known, but they all share common geometric features such as large fundamental groups. In this paper, we construct simply connected fourfolds over global fields of positive characteristic for which the Brauer-Manin machinery fails. Contrary to earlier work in this direction, our construction does not rely on major conjectures. Instead, we establish a new diophantine result of independent interest: a Mordell-type theorem for Campana's "geometric orbifolds" over function fields of positive characteristic. Along the way, we also construct the first example of simply connected surface of general type over a global field with a non-empty, but non-Zariski dense set of rational points.

Campana points of bounded height on vector group compactifications

We initiate a systematic quantitative study of subsets of rational points that are integral with respect to a weighted boundary divisor on Fano orbifolds. We call the points in these sets Campana points. Earlier work of Campana and subsequently Abramovich shows that there are several reasonable competing definitions for Campana points. We use a version that delineates well different types of behaviour of points as the weights on the boundary divisor vary. This prompts a Manin-type conjecture on Fano orbifolds for sets of Campana points that satisfy a klt (Kawamata log terminal) condition. By importing work of Chambert-Loir and Tschinkel to our set-up, we prove a log version of Manin's conjecture for klt Campana points on equivariant compactifications of vector groups.

Pseudo-split fibres and arithmetic surjectivity

Let $f: X \to Y$ be a dominant morphism of smooth, proper and geometrically integral varieties over a number field $k$, with geometrically integral generic fibre. We give a necessary and sufficient geometric criterion for the induced map $X(k_v) \to Y(k_v)$ to be surjective for almost all places $v$ of $k$. This generalizes a result of Denef which had previously been conjectured by Colliot-Thélène, and can be seen as an optimal geometric version of the celebrated Ax-Kochen theorem.

Logarithmic good reduction of abelian varieties

Let $K$ be a field which is complete for a discrete valuation. We prove a logarithmic version of the Néron-Ogg-Shafarevich criterion: if $A$ is an abelian variety over $K$ which is cohomologically tame, then $A$ has good reduction in the logarithmic setting, i.e. there exists a projective, log smooth model of $A$ over $\mathcal{O}_K$. This implies in particular the existence of a projective, regular model of $A$, generalizing a result of Künnemann. The proof combines a deep theorem of Gabber with the theory of degenerations of abelian varieties developed by Mumford, Faltings-Chai et al.

Logarithmic good reduction, monodromy and the rational volume

Let $R$ be a strictly local ring complete for a discrete valuation, with fraction field $K$ and residue field of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $X$ be a smooth, proper variety over $K$. Nicaise conjectured that the rational volume of $X$ is equal to the trace of the tame monodromy operator on $\ell$-adic cohomology if $X$ is cohomologically tame. He proved this equality if $X$ is a curve. We study his conjecture from the point of view of logarithmic geometry, and prove it for a class of varieties in any dimension: those having logarithmic good reduction.

Fibrations with few rational points

We study the problem of counting the number of varieties in families which have a rational point. We give conditions on the singular fibres that force very few of the varieties in the family to contain a rational point, in a precise quantitative sense. This generalises and unifies existing results in the literature by Serre, Browning-Dietmann, Bright-Browning-Loughran, Graber-Harris-Mazur-Starr, et al.

Insufficiency of the étale Brauer-Manin obstruction: towards a simply connected example

Since Poonen's construction of a variety $X$ defined over a number field $k$ for which $X(k)$ is empty and the étale Brauer--Manin set $X(\mathbf{A}_k)^\text{Br,et}$ is not, several other examples of smooth, projective varieties have been found for which the étale Brauer--Manin obstruction does not explain the failure of the Hasse principle. All known examples are constructed using "Poonen's trick", i.e. they have the distinctive feature of being fibrations over a higher genus curve; in particular, their Albanese variety is non-trivial. In this paper, we construct examples for which the Albanese variety is trivial. The new geometric ingredient in our construction is the appearance of Beauville surfaces. Assuming the $abc$ conjecture and using geometric work of Campana on orbifolds, we also prove the existence of an example which is simply connected.

Principes locaux-globaux pour certaines fibrations en torseurs sous un tore

Let $k$ be a number field and let $T$ be a $k$-torus. Consider a fibration in torsors under $T$, i.e. a morphism $f: X \to \mathbb{P}^1_k$ from a smooth, projective $k$-variety $X$ to $\mathbb{P}^1_k$ such that the generic fibre $X_η\to η$ is a smooth compactification of a principal homogeneous space under $T \times_k η$. We study the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle and weak approximation for $X$, under Schinzel's hypothesis, thereby generalizing recent work of Wei. Our results are unconditional if $k = \mathbb{Q}$ and the non-split fibres of $f$ are defined over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Universal torsors and values of quadratic polynomials represented by norms

Let $K/k$ be an extension of number fields, and let $P(t)$ be a quadratic polynomial over $k$. Let $X$ be the affine variety defined by $P(t) = N_{K/k}(\mathbf{z})$. We study the Hasse principle and weak approximation for $X$ in three cases. For $[K:k]=4$ and $P(t)$ irreducible over $k$ and split in $K$, we prove the Hasse principle and weak approximation. For $k=\mathbb{Q}$ with arbitrary $K$, we show that the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle and weak approximation is the only one. For $[K:k]=4$ and $P(t)$ irreducible over $k$, we determine the Brauer group of smooth proper models of $X$. In a case where it is non-trivial, we exhibit a counterexample to weak approximation.
