A vector equilibrium problem for the two-matrix model in the quartic/quadratic case

We consider the two sequences of biorthogonal polynomials (p_{k,n})_k and (q_{k,n})_k related to the Hermitian two-matrix model with potentials V(x) = x^2/2 and W(y) = y^4/4 + ty^2. From an asymptotic analysis of the coefficients in the recurrence relation satisfied by these polynomials, we obtain the limiting distribution of the zeros of the polynomials p_{n,n} as n tends to infinity. The limiting zero distribution is characterized as the first measure of the minimizer in a vector equilibrium problem involving three measures which for the case t=0 reduces to the vector equilibrium problem that was given recently by two of us. A novel feature is that for t < 0 an external field is active on the third measure which introduces a new type of critical behavior for a certain negative value of t. We also prove a general result about the interlacing of zeros of biorthogonal polynomials.

Multiple orthogonal polynomials in random matrix theory

Multiple orthogonal polynomials are a generalization of orthogonal polynomials in which the orthogonality is distributed among a number of orthogonality weights. They appear in random matrix theory in the form of special determinantal point processes that are called multiple orthogonal polynomial (MOP) ensembles. The correlation kernel in such an ensemble is expressed in terms of the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem, that is of size (r+1) x (r+1) in the case of r weights. A number of models give rise to a MOP ensemble, and we discuss recent results on models of non-intersecting Brownian motions, Hermitian random matrices with external source, and the two matrix model. A novel feature in the asymptotic analysis of the latter two models is a vector equilibrium problem for two or more measures, that describes the limiting mean eigenvalue density. The vector equilibrium problems involve both an external field and an upper constraint.

Random matrix model with external source and a constrained vector equilibrium problem

We consider the random matrix model with external source, in case where the potential V(x) is an even polynomial and the external source has two eigenvalues a, -a of equal multiplicity. We show that the limiting mean eigenvalue distribution of this model can be characterized as the first component of a pair of measures (mu_1,mu_2) that solve a constrained vector equilibrium problem. The proof is based on the steepest descent analysis of the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem for multiple orthogonal polynomials. We illustrate our results in detail for the case of a quartic double well potential V(x) = x^4/4 - tx^2/2. We are able to determine the precise location of the phase transitions in the ta-plane, where either the constraint becomes active, or the two intervals in the support come together (or both).

A graph-based equilibrium problem for the limiting distribution of non-intersecting Brownian motions at low temperature

We consider n non-intersecting Brownian motion paths with p prescribed starting positions at time t=0 and q prescribed ending positions at time t=1. The positions of the paths at any intermediate time are a determinantal point process, which in the case p=1 is equivalent to the eigenvalue distribution of a random matrix from the Gaussian unitary ensemble with external source. For general p and q, we show that if a temperature parameter is sufficiently small, then the distribution of the Brownian paths is characterized in the large n limit by a vector equilibrium problem with an interaction matrix that is based on a bipartite planar graph. Our proof is based on a steepest descent analysis of an associated (p+q) by (p+q) matrix valued Riemann-Hilbert problem whose solution is built out of multiple orthogonal polynomials. A new feature of the steepest descent analysis is a systematic opening of a large number of global lenses.

Multiple orthogonal polynomial ensembles

Multiple orthogonal polynomials are traditionally studied because of their connections to number theory and approximation theory. In recent years they were found to be connected to certain models in random matrix theory. In this paper we introduce the notion of a multiple orthogonal polynomial ensemble (MOP ensemble) and derive some of their basic properties. It is shown that Angelesco and Nikishin systems give rise to MOP ensembles and that the equilibrium problems that are associated with these systems have a natural interpretation in the context of MOP ensembles.

A phase transition for non-intersecting Brownian motions, and the Painleve II equation

We consider n non-intersecting Brownian motions with two fixed starting positions and two fixed ending positions in the large n limit. We show that in case of 'large separation' between the endpoints, the particles are asymptotically distributed in two separate groups, with no interaction between them, as one would intuitively expect. We give a rigorous proof using the Riemann-Hilbert formalism. In the case of 'critical separation' between the endpoints we are led to a model Riemann-Hilbert problem associated to the Hastings-McLeod solution of the Painleve II equation. We show that the Painleve II equation also appears in the large n asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients of the multiple Hermite polynomials that are associated with the Riemann-Hilbert problem.

Universality in the two matrix model: a Riemann-Hilbert steepest descent analysis

The eigenvalue statistics of a pair $(M_1,M_2)$ of $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices taken random with respect to the measure $$\frac{1}{Z_n}\exp\big(-n\Tr (V(M_1)+W(M_2)-τM_1M_2)\big) {\rm d}M_1 {\rm d} M_2 $$ can be described in terms of two families of biorthogonal polynomials. In this paper we give a steepest descent analysis of a $4 \times 4$ matrix-valued Riemann-Hilbert problem characterizing one of the families of biorthogonal polynomials in the special case $W(y)=y^4/4$ and $V$ an even polynomial. As a result we obtain the limiting behavior of the correlation kernel associated to the eigenvalues of $M_1$ (when averaged over $M_2$) in the global and local regime as $n\to \infty$ in the one-cut regular case. A special feature in the analysis is the introduction of a vector equilibrium problem involving both an external field and an upper constraint.

Painleve IV asymptotics for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a modified Laguerre weight

We study polynomials that are orthogonal with respect to the modified Laguerre weight $z^{-n + ν} e^{-Nz} (z-1)^{2b}$ in the limit where $n, N \to \infty$ with $N/n \to 1$ and $ν$ is a fixed number in $\mathbb{R} \setminus \mathbb{N}_0$. With the effect of the factor $(z-1)^{2b}$, the local parametrix near the critical point $z =1$ can be constructed in terms of $Ψ$-functions associated with the Painleve IV equation. We show that the asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials can be described in terms of specified solution of the Painleve IV equation in the double scaling limit. Our method is based on the Deift/Zhou steepest decent analysis of the Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with orthogonal polynomials.

Universality in unitary random matrix ensembles when the soft edge meets the hard edge

Unitary random matrix ensembles Z_{n,N}^{-1} (\det M)^alpha exp(-N Tr V(M)) dM defined on positive definite matrices M, where alpha > -1 and V is real analytic, have a hard edge at 0. The equilibrium measure associated with V typically vanishes like a square root at soft edges of the spectrum. For the case that the equilibrium measure vanishes like a square root at 0, we determine the scaling limits of the eigenvalue correlation kernel near 0 in the limit when n, N tend to infinity such that n/N - 1 = O(n^{-2/3}). For each value of alpha > -1 we find a one-parameter family of limiting kernels that we describe in terms of the Hastings-McLeod solution of the Painleve II equation with parameter alpha + 1/2.

An equilibrium problem for the limiting eigenvalue distribution of banded Toeplitz matrices

We study the limiting eigenvalue distribution of $n\times n$ banded Toeplitz matrices as $n\to \infty$. From classical results of Schmidt-Spitzer and Hirschman it is known that the eigenvalues accumulate on a special curve in the complex plane and the normalized eigenvalue counting measure converges weakly to a measure on this curve as $n\to\infty$. In this paper, we characterize the limiting measure in terms of an equilibrium problem. The limiting measure is one component of the unique vector of measures that minimes an energy functional defined on admissible vectors of measures. In addition, we show that each of the other components is the limiting measure of the normalized counting measure on certain generalized eigenvalues.

Large n limit of Gaussian random matrices with external source, Part III: Double scaling limit

We consider the double scaling limit in the random matrix ensemble with an external source $\frac{1}{Z_n} e^{-n \Tr({1/2}M^2 -AM)} dM$ defined on $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices, where $A$ is a diagonal matrix with two eigenvalues $\pm a$ of equal multiplicities. The value $a=1$ is critical since the eigenvalues of $M$ accumulate as $n \to \infty$ on two intervals for $a > 1$ and on one interval for $0 < a < 1$. These two cases were treated in Parts I and II, where we showed that the local eigenvalue correlations have the universal limiting behavior known from unitary random matrix ensembles. For the critical case $a=1$ new limiting behavior occurs which is described in terms of Pearcey integrals, as shown by Brézin and Hikami, and Tracy and Widom. We establish this result by applying the Deift/Zhou steepest descent method to a $3 \times 3$-matrix valued Riemann-Hilbert problem which involves the construction of a local parametrix out of Pearcey integrals. We resolve the main technical issue of matching the local Pearcey parametrix with a global outside parametrix by modifying an underlying Riemann surface.

Universality of the double scaling limit in random matrix models

We study unitary random matrix ensembles in the critical case where the limiting mean eigenvalue density vanishes quadratically at an interior point of the support. We establish universality of the limits of the eigenvalue correlation kernel at such a critical point in a double scaling limit. The limiting kernels are constructed out of functions associated with the second Painleve equation. This extends a result of Bleher and Its for the special case of a critical quartic potential. The two main tools we use are equilibrium measures and Riemann-Hilbert problems. In our treatment of equilibrium measures we allow a negative density near the critical point, which enables us to treat all cases simultaneously. The asymptotic analysis of the Riemann-Hilbert problem is done with the Deift/Zhou steepest descent analysis. For the construction of a local parametrix at the critical point we introduce a modification of the approach of Baik, Deift, and Johansson so that we are able to satisfy the required jump properties exactly.

Large $n$ limit of Gaussian random matrices with external source, part II

We continue the study of the Hermitian random matrix ensemble with external source $\frac{1}{Z_n} e^{-n \Tr({1/2}M^2 -AM)} dM$ where $A$ has two distinct eigenvalues $\pm a$ of equal multiplicity. This model exhibits a phase transition for the value $a=1$, since the eigenvalues of $M$ accumulate on two intervals for $a > 1$, and on one interval for $0 < a < 1$. The case $a > 1$ was treated in part I, where it was proved that local eigenvalue correlations have the universal limiting behavior which is known for unitarily invariant random matrices, that is, limiting eigenvalue correlations are expressed in terms of the sine kernel in the bulk of the spectrum, and in terms of the Airy kernel at the edge. In this paper we establish the same results for the case $0 < a < 1$. As in part I we apply the Deift/Zhou steepest descent analysis to a $3 \times 3$-matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. Due to the different structure of an underlying Riemann surface, the analysis includes an additional step involving a global opening of lenses, which is a new phenomenon in the steepest descent analysis of Riemann-Hilbert problems.

Large n limit of Gaussian random matrices with external source, part I

We consider the random matrix ensemble with an external source \[ \frac{1}{Z_n} e^{-n \Tr({1/2}M^2 -AM)} dM \] defined on $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices, where $A$ is a diagonal matrix with only two eigenvalues $\pm a$ of equal multiplicity. For the case $a > 1$, we establish the universal behavior of local eigenvalue correlations in the limit $n \to \infty$, which is known from unitarily invariant random matrix models. Thus, local eigenvalue correlations are expressed in terms of the sine kernel in the bulk and in terms of the Airy kernel at the edge of the spectrum. We use a characterization of the associated multiple Hermite polynomials by a $3 \times 3$-matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem, and the Deift/Zhou steepest descent method to analyze the Riemann-Hilbert problem in the large $n$ limit.
