Observation of an excess at 30 GeV in the opposite sign di-muon spectra of ${\rm Z}^{0} \to b\overline{ b} + {\rm X}$ events recorded by the ALEPH experiment at LEP

The re-analysis of the archived data recorded at the ${\rm Z}^{0}$ resonance by the ALEPH experiment at LEP during the years 1992-1995 shows an excess in the opposite sign di-muon mass spectra at 30.40 $\pm$ 0.46 GeV in events containing b quarks. The excess has a natural width of 1.78 $\pm$ 1.14 GeV. The di-muon excess has a local significance around $5\,σ$ ($Z_{\rm asym}$), depending on the background model used. The significances for background models based on a kernel density approximation stay close to $3\,σ$ ($Z_{\rm freq,\,lee}$), when including a look elsewhere effect. Another method to obtain a significance value results in at least $2.6\,σ$ ($Z_{\rm Bi}$). A compatible, but smaller excess is visible in the opposite di-electron mass spectrum as well. This paper uses the data collected by the ALEPH experiment in the years 1992-1995, which have been archived to allow their use for physics analyses after the closure of the collaboration.

Study of hadronic final states from double tagged gammagamma events at LEP

The interaction of virtual photons is investigated using double tagged gammagamma events with hadronic final states recorded by the ALEPH experiment at e^+e^- centre-of-mass energies between 188 and 209 GeV. The measured cross section is compared to Monte Carlo models, and to next-to-leading-order QCD and BFKL calculations.

Search for stable hadronizing squarks and gluinos in e+e- collisions up to sqrt(s) = 209 GeV

Searches for stable, hadronizing scalar quarks and gluinos are performed using the data collected with the ALEPH detector at LEP. Gluon splitting into a gluino or a squark pair is searched for at centre-of-mass energies around the Z resonance, in the e+e- -> q qbar gluino gluino and q qbar squark antisquark processes. Stable squark pair production, and stop pair production with subsequent decays into a stable gluino, stop -> c gluino, are also directly searched for at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. Altogether, stable hadronizing stop (sbottom) quarks are excluded up to masses of 95 (92) GeV/c2, and stable hadronizing gluinos are excluded up to 26.9 GeV/c2, at 95% confidence level. In the framework of R-parity-conserving supersymmetric models in which the gluino and the stop quark are the two lightest supersymmetric particles, a 95% C.L. lower limit of 80 GeV/c2 is set on the stop quark mass.

A measurement of the gluon splitting rate into ccbar pairs in hadronic Z decays

The rate of gluons splitting into $c \bar{c}$ pairs in hadronic $Z$ decays is measured using the data sample collected by ALEPH from 1991 to 1995. The selection is based on the identification of leptons (electrons and muons) originating from semileptonic charm decays, and on the topological properties of signal events. The result derived from the selected sample is $g_{c \bar{c}}=(3.26 \pm 0.23 \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.42 \rm{(syst)}) %$

Measurement of the inclusive D*+- production in gamma-gamma collisions at LEP

The inclusive production of D$^{*\pm}$ mesons in two-photon collisions is measured with the ALEPH detector at $\epem$ centre-of-mass energies from 183$\unit{GeV}$ to 209$\unit{GeV}$. A total of $360 \pm 27$ D$^{*\pm}$ meson events were observed from an integrated luminosity of 699\unit{pb^{-1}}$. Contributions from direct and single-resolved rocesses are separated using the ratio of the transverse momentum $p_{\rm t}^{\rm D^{*\pm}}$ of the D$^{*\pm}$ to the visible invariant mass $W_{\mathrm{vis}}$ of the event. Differential cross sections of D$^{*\pm}$ production as functions of $p_{\rm t}^{\rm D^{*\pm}}$ and the pseudorapidity $|η^{\rm D^{*\pm}}| $ are measured in the range $ 2\unit{GeV}/c < p_{\rm t}^{\rm D^{*\pm}} < 12\unit{GeV}/c $ and $ |η^{\rm D^{*\pm}}| < 1.5 $. They are compared to next-to-leading order (NLO)perturbative QCD calculations. The extrapolation of the integrated visible D$^{*\pm}$ cross section to the total charm cross section, based on the Pythia Monte Carlo program, yields $ σ(\epem \to \epem \ccbar)_ {=197\unit{GeV}} = 731 \pm 74_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 47_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 157_{\mathrm{extr}} \unit{pb} $.
