How constructive is constructing measures?

Given some set, how hard is it to construct a measure supported by it? We classify some variations of this task in the Weihrauch lattice. Particular attention is paid to Frostman measures on sets with positive Hausdorff dimension. As a side result, the Weihrauch degree of Hausdorff dimension itself is determined.

The descriptive theory of represented spaces

This is a survey on the ongoing development of a descriptive theory of represented spaces, which is intended as an extension of both classical and effective descriptive set theory to deal with both sets and functions between represented spaces. Most material is from work-in-progress, and thus there may be a stronger focus on projects involving the author than an objective survey would merit.

Efficient Decomposition of Bimatrix Games (Extended Abstract)

Exploiting the algebraic structure of the set of bimatrix games, a divide-and-conquer algorithm for finding Nash equilibria is proposed. The algorithm is fixed-parameter tractable with the size of the largest irreducible component of a game as parameter. An implementation of the algorithm is shown to yield a significant performance increase on inputs with small parameters.

Non-deterministic computation and the Jayne-Rogers Theorem

We provide a simple proof of a computable analogue to the Jayne Rogers Theorem from descriptive set theory. The difficulty of the proof is delegated to a simulation result pertaining to non-deterministic type-2 machines. Thus, we demonstrate that developments in computational models can have applications in fields thought to be far removed from it.

The degree structure of Weihrauch-reducibility

We answer a question by Vasco Brattka and Guido Gherardi by proving that the Weihrauch-lattice is not a Brouwer algebra. The computable Weihrauch-lattice is also not a Heyting algebra, but the continuous Weihrauch-lattice is. We further investigate the existence of infinite infima and suprema, as well as embeddings of the Medvedev-degrees into the Weihrauch-degrees.

Relative Computability and Uniform Continuity of Relations

A type-2 computable real function is necessarily continuous; and this remains true for relative, i.e. oracle-based computations. Conversely, by the Weierstrass Approximation Theorem, every continuous f:[0,1]->R is computable relative to some oracle. In their search for a similar topological characterization of relatively computable multivalued functions f:[0,1]=>R (aka relations), Brattka and Hertling (1994) have considered two notions: weak continuity (which is weaker than relative computability) and strong continuity (which is stronger than relative computability). Observing that uniform continuity plays a crucial role in the Weierstrass Theorem, we propose and compare several notions of uniform continuity for relations. Here, due to the additional quantification over values y in f(x), new ways of (linearly) ordering quantifiers arise, yet none of them turn out as satisfactory. We are thus led to a notion of uniform continuity based on the Henkin Quantifier; and prove it necessary for relative computability. In fact iterating this condition yields a strict hierarchy of notions each necessary, and the omega-th level also sufficient, for relative computability.

On the (semi)lattices induced by continuous reducibilities

Continuous reducibilities are a proven tool in computable analysis, and have applications in other fields such as constructive mathematics or reverse mathematics. We study the order-theoretic properties of several variants of the two most important definitions, and especially introduce suprema for them. The suprema are shown to commutate with several characteristic numbers.

Closed Choice and a Uniform Low Basis Theorem

We study closed choice principles for different spaces. Given information about what does not constitute a solution, closed choice determines a solution. We show that with closed choice one can characterize several models of hypercomputation in a uniform framework using Weihrauch reducibility. The classes of functions which are reducible to closed choice of the singleton space, of the natural numbers, of Cantor space and of Baire space correspond to the class of computable functions, of functions computable with finitely many mind changes, of weakly computable functions and of effectively Borel measurable functions, respectively. We also prove that all these classes correspond to classes of non-deterministically computable functions with the respective spaces as advice spaces. Moreover, we prove that closed choice on Euclidean space can be considered as "locally compact choice" and it is obtained as product of closed choice on the natural numbers and on Cantor space. We also prove a Quotient Theorem for compact choice which shows that single-valued functions can be "divided" by compact choice in a certain sense. Another result is the Independent Choice Theorem, which provides a uniform proof that many choice principles are closed under composition. Finally, we also study the related class of low computable functions, which contains the class of weakly computable functions as well as the class of functions computable with finitely many mind changes. As one main result we prove a uniform version of the Low Basis Theorem that states that closed choice on Cantor space (and the Euclidean space) is low computable. We close with some related observations on the Turing jump operation and its initial topology.

Computation with Advice

Computation with advice is suggested as generalization of both computation with discrete advice and Type-2 Nondeterminism. Several embodiments of the generic concept are discussed, and the close connection to Weihrauch reducibility is pointed out. As a novel concept, computability with random advice is studied; which corresponds to correct solutions being guessable with positive probability. In the framework of computation with advice, it is possible to define computational complexity for certain concepts of hypercomputation. Finally, some examples are given which illuminate the interplay of uniform and non-uniform techniques in order to investigate both computability with advice and the Weihrauch lattice.

The Complexity of Iterated Strategy Elimination

We consider the computational complexity of the question whether a certain strategy can be removed from a game by means of iterated elimination of dominated strategies. In particular, we study the influence of different definitions of domination and of the number of different payoff values. In addition, the consequence of restriction to constant-sum games is shown.

Infinite Oracle Queries in Type-2 Machines (Extended Abstract)

We define Oracle-Type-2-Machine capable of writing infinite oracle queries. In contrast to finite oracle queries, this extends the realm of oracle-computable functions into the discontinuous realm. Our definition is conservative; access to a computable oracle does not increase the computational power. Other models of real hypercomputation such as Ziegler's (finitely) revising computation or Type-2-Nondeterminism are shown to be special cases of Oracle-Type-2-Machines. Our approach offers an intuitive definition of the weakest machine model capable to simulate both Type-2-Machines and BSS machines.

How discontinuous is Computing Nash Equilibria?

We investigate the degree of discontinuity of several solution concepts from non-cooperative game theory. While the consideration of Nash equilibria forms the core of our work, also pure and correlated equilibria are dealt with. Formally, we restrict the treatment to two player games, but results and proofs extend to the n-player case. As a side result, the degree of discontinuity of solving systems of linear inequalities is settled.
