Bath deformations, islands and holographic complexity

Considering a doubly holographic model, we study the evolution of holographic subregion complexity corresponding to deformations of bath state by a relevant scalar operator, which corresponds to a renormalization group flow from the AdS-Schwarzschild to the Kasner universe in the bulk. The subregion complexity shows a discontinuous jump at Page time at a fixed perturbation, where the discontinuity depends solely on the system's parameters. We show that the amount of discontinuity decreases with the perturbation as well as with the scaling dimension of the relevant scalar operator.

Complexity for Open Quantum System

We study the complexity for an open quantum system. Our system is a harmonic oscillator coupled to a one-dimensional massless scalar field, which acts as the bath. Specifically, we consider the reduced density matrix by tracing out the bath degrees of freedom for both regular and inverted oscillator and computed the complexity of purification (COP) and complexity by using the operator-state mapping. We found that when the oscillator is regular the COP saturates quickly for both underdamped and overdamped oscillators. Interestingly, when the oscillator is underdamped, we discover a kink like behaviour for the saturation value of COP with varying damping coefficient. For the inverted oscillator, we found a linear growth of COP with time for all values of bath-system interaction. However, when the interaction is increased the slope of the linear growth decreases, implying that the unstable nature of the system can be regulated by the bath.

Partial islands and subregion complexity in geometric secret-sharing model

We compute the holographic subregion complexity of a radiation subsystem in a geometric secret-sharing model of Hawking radiation in the "complexity = volume" proposal. The model is constructed using multiboundary wormhole geometries in AdS$_{3}$. The entanglement curve for secret-sharing captures a crossover between two minimal curves in the geometry apart from the usual eternal Page curve present for the complete radiation entanglement. We compute the complexity dual to the secret-sharing minimal surfaces and study their "time" evolution. When we have access to a small part of the radiation, the complexity shows a jump at the secret-sharing time larger than the Page time. Moreover, the minimal surfaces do not have access to the entire island region for this particular case. They can only access it partially. We describe this inaccessibility in the context of "classical" Markov recovery.

Shadow analysis for rotating black holes in the presence of plasma for an expanding universe

We explore the structure of shadow for a Kerr-de Sitter black hole with a non-magnetized, pressureless plasma surrounding it. Specific plasma distributions are considered to separate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and find the photon regions. An analytic formula describing the boundary curve of the shadow for such a black hole in an expanding universe for an observer at any finite point outside the horizon is derived. We observe deviations which are further explored by calculating the curvature radius at a particular point for such structures in the presence and absence of plasma and calculate the diameter of the shadow.

Complexity from the Reduced Density Matrix: a new Diagnostic for Chaos

We investigate circuit complexity to characterize chaos in multiparticle quantum systems. In the process, we take a stride to analyze open quantum systems by using complexity. We propose a new diagnostic of quantum chaos from complexity based on the reduced density matrix by exploring different types of quantum circuits. Through explicit calculations on a toy model of two coupled harmonic oscillators, where one or both of the oscillators are inverted, we demonstrate that the evolution of complexity is a possible diagnostic of chaos.

Ringdown of Charged Compact Objects using Membrane Paradigm

Although the black holes are an integral part of the standard model of astrophysics and cosmology, their existence poses some serious fundamental problems. In recent years, several horizonless compact object models were proposed to address those issues. As the gravitational wave detectors started to observe more and more merger events with a large signal-to-noise ratio, gravitational wave spectroscopy could hold the key to uncover the existence of these objects. This is because the late time ringdown signals of horizonless compact objects differ from that of the black holes. In this paper, we study the ringdown properties of charged compact objects and compare them with those obtained in the black hole scenario. Since the internal structure and the equation of state of these compact objects are largely unknown, we employ membrane paradigm to obtain appropriate boundary conditions for the perturbations of these objects. This model can describe the ringdown properties of a large variety of compact objects.

Towards the Web of Quantum Chaos Diagnostics

We study the connections between three quantities that can be used as diagnostics for quantum chaos, i.e., the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC), Loschmidt echo (LE), and complexity. We generalize the connection between OTOC and LE for infinite dimensions and extend it for higher-order OTOCs and multi-fold LEs. Novel applications of this intrinsic relation are proposed. We also propose a relationship between a specific circuit complexity and LE by using the inverted oscillator model. These relationships signal a deeper connection between these three probes of quantum chaos.

Islands and complexity of eternal black hole and radiation subsystems for a doubly holographic model

We study the entanglement islands and subsystem volume complexity corresponding to the left/ right entanglement of a conformal defect in $d$-dimensions in Randall-Sundrum (RS) braneworld model with subcritical tension brane. The left and right modes of the defect mimic the eternal black hole and radiation system respectively. Hence the entanglement entropy between the two follows an eternal black hole Page curve which is unitarity compatible. We compute the volumes corresponding to the left and right branes with preferred Ryu-Takanayagi (RT) surfaces at different times, which provide a probe of the subregion complexity of the black hole and the radiation states respectively. An interesting jump in volume is found at Page time, where the entanglement curve is saturated due to the inclusion of the island surfaces. We explain various possibilities of this phase transition in complexity at Page time and argue how these results match with a covariant proposal qualitatively.

The Multi-faceted Inverted Harmonic Oscillator: Chaos and Complexity

The harmonic oscillator is the paragon of physical models; conceptually and computationally simple, yet rich enough to teach us about physics on scales that span classical mechanics to quantum field theory. This multifaceted nature extends also to its inverted counterpart, in which the oscillator frequency is analytically continued to pure imaginary values. In this article we probe the inverted harmonic oscillator (IHO) with recently developed quantum chaos diagnostics such as the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) and the circuit complexity. In particular, we study the OTOC for the displacement operator of the IHO with and without a non-Gaussian cubic perturbation to explore genuine and quasi scrambling respectively. In addition, we compute the full quantum Lyapunov spectrum for the inverted oscillator, finding a paired structure among the Lyapunov exponents. We also use the Heisenberg group to compute the complexity for the time evolved displacement operator, which displays chaotic behaviour. Finally, we extended our analysis to N-inverted harmonic oscillators to study the behaviour of complexity at the different timescales encoded in dissipation, scrambling and asymptotic regimes.

Displacement memory effect near the horizon of black holes

We study the displacement memory effect and its connection with the extended-BMS symmetries near the horizon of black holes. We show there is a permanent shift in the geodesic deviation vector relating two nearby timelike geodesics placed close to the horizon of black holes, upon the passage of gravitational waves. We also relate this memory effect with the asymptotic symmetries near the horizon of asymptotic black hole spacetimes. The shift of the relative position of the detectors is shown to be induced by a combination of BMS generators near the horizon. The displacement memory effect near the horizon possesses similarities to the same obtained in the far region.

Topological Phase Transitions Induced by Varying Topology and Boundaries in the Toric Code

One of the important characteristics of topological phases of matter is the topology of the underlying manifold on which they are defined. In this paper, we present the sensitivity of such phases of matter to the underlying topology, by studying the phase transitions induced due to the change in the boundary conditions. We claim that these phase transitions are accompanied by broken symmetries in the excitation space and to gain further insight we analyze various signatures like the ground state degeneracy, topological entanglement entropy while introducing the open-loop operator whose expectation value effectively captures the phase transition. Further, we extend the analysis to an open quantum setup by defining effective collapse operators, the dynamics of which cool the system to different topologically ordered steady states. We show that the phase transition between such steady states is effectively captured by the expectation value of the open-loop operator.

Scalar perturbations of black holes in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity

We study linear scalar perturbations of black holes in two-dimensional (2D) gravity models with a particular emphasis on Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We obtain an exact expression of the quasinormal mode frequencies for single horizon black holes in JT gravity and then verify it numerically using the Horowitz-Hubeny method. For a 2D Reissner-Nordström like solution, we find that the massless scalar wave equation reduces to the confluent Heun equation using which we calculate the Hawking spectra. Finally, we consider the dimensionally reduced Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole and obtain the exterior and interior quasinormal modes. The dynamics of a scalar field near the Cauchy horizon mimics the behavior of the same for the usual BTZ black hole, indicating a possible violation of the strong cosmic censorship conjecture in the near extreme limit. However, quantum effects seem to rescue strong cosmic censorship.

Post-Quench Evolution of Complexity and Entanglement in a Topological System

We investigate the evolution of complexity and entanglement following a quench in a one-dimensional topological system, namely the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We demonstrate that complexity can detect quantum phase transitions and shows signatures of revivals; this observation provides a practical advantage in information processing. We also show that the complexity saturates much faster than the entanglement entropy in this system, and we provide a physical argument for this. Finally, we demonstrate that complexity is a less sensitive probe of topological order, compared with measures of entanglement.

Structural Phase Dependent Giant Interfacial Spin Transparency in W/CoFeB Thin Film Heterostructure

Pure spin current has transfigured the energy-efficient spintronic devices and it has the salient characteristic of transport of the spin angular momentum. Spin pumping is a potent method to generate pure spin current and for its increased efficiency high effective spin-mixing conductance (Geff) and interfacial spin transparency (T) are essential. Here, a giant T is reported in Sub/W(t)/Co20Fe60B20(d)/SiO2(2 nm) heterostructures in β-tungsten (β-W) phase by employing all-optical time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect technique. From the variation of Gilbert damping with W and CoFeB thicknesses, the spin diffusion length of W and spin-mixing conductances are extracted. Subsequently, T is derived as 0.81 \pm 0.03 for the β-W/CoFeB interface. A sharp variation of Geff and T with W thickness is observed in consonance with the thickness-dependent structural phase transition and resistivity of W. The spin memory loss and two-magnon scattering effects are found to have negligible contributions to damping modulation as opposed to spin pumping effect which is reconfirmed from the invariance of damping with Cu spacer layer thickness inserted between W and CoFeB. The observation of giant interfacial spin transparency and its strong dependence on crystal structures of W will be important for pure spin current based spin-orbitronic devices.

Cosmological Complexity

We compute the quantum circuit complexity of the evolution of scalar curvature perturbations on expanding backgrounds, using the language of squeezed vacuum states. In particular, we construct a simple cosmological model consisting of an early-time period of de Sitter expansion followed by a radiation-dominated era and track the evolution of complexity throughout this history. During early-time de Sitter expansion the complexity grows linearly with the number of e-folds for modes outside the horizon. The evolution of complexity also suggests that the Universe behaves like a chaotic system during this era, for which we propose a scrambling time and Lyapunov exponent. During the radiation-dominated era, however, the complexity decreases until it "freezes in" after horizon re-entry, leading to a "de-complexification" of the Universe.

The Rise of Cosmological Complexity: Saturation of Growth and Chaos

We compute the circuit complexity of scalar curvature perturbations on FLRW cosmological backgrounds with fixed equation of state $w$ using the language of squeezed vacuum states. Backgrounds that are accelerating and expanding, or decelerating and contracting, exhibit features consistent with chaotic behavior, including linearly growing complexity. Remarkably, we uncover a bound on the growth of complexity for both expanding and contracting backgrounds $λ\leq \sqrt{2} \ |H|$, similar to other bounds proposed independently in the literature. The bound is saturated for expanding backgrounds with an equation of state more negative than $w = -5/3$, and for contracting backgrounds with an equation of state larger than $w = 1$. For expanding backgrounds that preserve the null energy condition, de Sitter space has the largest rate of growth of complexity (identified as the Lyapunov exponent), and we find a scrambling time that is similar to other estimates up to order one factors.

Renormalized Circuit Complexity

We propose a modification to Nielsen's circuit complexity for Hamiltonian simulation using the Suzuki-Trotter (ST) method, which provides a network like structure for the quantum circuit. This leads to an optimized gate counting linear in the geodesic distance and spatial volume, unlike in the original proposal. The optimized ST iteration order is correlated with the error tolerance and plays the role of an anti-de Sitter (AdS) radial coordinate. The density of gates is shown to be monotonic with the tolerance and a holographic interpretation using path-integral optimization is given.

Chaos and Complexity in Quantum Mechanics

We propose a new diagnostic for quantum chaos. We show that time evolution of complexity for a particular type of target state can provide equivalent information about the classical Lyapunov exponent and scrambling time as out-of-time-order correlators. Moreover, for systems that can be switched from a regular to unstable (chaotic) regime by a tuning of the coupling constant of the interaction Hamiltonian, we find that the complexity defines a new time scale. We interpret this time scale as recording when the system makes the transition from regular to chaotic behaviour.
