Machine Learning for Electrode Materials: Property Prediction via Composition

In this work, we benchmark three leading composition based Machine Learning (ML) frameworks, MODNet, CrabNet, and a random forest model based on Magpie features, predicting the properties of battery electrode materials using the Materials Project Battery Explorer dataset. We evaluate these models based on predictive accuracy, visualize numerical features using two-dimensional embeddings, and quantify performance using standard metrics. Our results demonstrate that CrabNet consistently outperforms the other models across all tests. To validate these findings, we employ bootstrap resampling and two cross-validation (CV) strategies (leave-one-cluster-out and stratified 5-fold CV), comparing each model against a control baseline, using unseen experimental data as a hold-out test. We also apply unsupervised clustering using t-SNE and DBSCAN on physically observed features extracted from matminer, revealing coherent material groupings without prior labels. The final selected model consistently improves over controls, and we believe can be used as a early stage oracle for electrode materials composition screening. Our study aims to identify the error distributions and limitations of the approach, discussing the challenges with developing robust ML models. Despite these constraints, our findings suggest the final selected model is effective for early-stage compositional screening.

See, Plan, Cut: MPC-Based Autonomous Volumetric Robotic Laser Surgery with OCT Guidance

Robotic laser systems offer the potential for sub-millimeter, non-contact, high-precision tissue resection, yet existing platforms lack volumetric planning and intraoperative feedback. We present RATS (Robot-Assisted Tissue Surgery), an intelligent opto-mechanical, optical coherence tomography (OCT)-guided robotic platform designed for autonomous volumetric soft tissue resection in surgical applications. RATS integrates macro-scale RGB-D imaging, micro-scale OCT, and a fiber-coupled surgical laser, calibrated through a novel multistage alignment pipeline that achieves OCT-to-laser calibration accuracy of 0.161+-0.031mm on tissue phantoms and ex vivo porcine tissue. A super-Gaussian laser-tissue interaction (LTI) model characterizes ablation crater morphology with an average RMSE of 0.231+-0.121mm, outperforming Gaussian baselines. A sampling-based model predictive control (MPC) framework operates directly on OCT voxel data to generate constraint-aware resection trajectories with closed-loop feedback, achieving 0.842mm RMSE and improving intersection-over-union agreement by 64.8% compared to feedforward execution. With OCT, RATS detects subsurface structures and modifies the planner's objective to preserve them, demonstrating clinical feasibility.

TumorMap: A Laser-based Surgical Platform for 3D Tumor Mapping and Fully-Automated Tumor Resection

Surgical resection of malignant solid tumors is critically dependent on the surgeon's ability to accurately identify pathological tissue and remove the tumor while preserving surrounding healthy structures. However, building an intraoperative 3D tumor model for subsequent removal faces major challenges due to the lack of high-fidelity tumor reconstruction, difficulties in developing generalized tissue models to handle the inherent complexities of tumor diagnosis, and the natural physical limitations of bimanual operation, physiologic tremor, and fatigue creep during surgery. To overcome these challenges, we introduce "TumorMap", a surgical robotic platform to formulate intraoperative 3D tumor boundaries and achieve autonomous tissue resection using a set of multifunctional lasers. TumorMap integrates a three-laser mechanism (optical coherence tomography, laser-induced endogenous fluorescence, and cutting laser scalpel) combined with deep learning models to achieve fully-automated and noncontact tumor resection. We validated TumorMap in murine osteoscarcoma and soft-tissue sarcoma tumor models, and established a novel histopathological workflow to estimate sensor performance. With submillimeter laser resection accuracy, we demonstrated multimodal sensor-guided autonomous tumor surgery without any human intervention.

Ab initio Description of Bond-Breaking in Large Electric Fields

Strong ($10^{10}$ V/m) electric fields capable of inducing atomic bond-breaking represent a powerful tool for surface chemistry. However, their exact effects are difficult to predict due to a lack of suitable tools to probe their associated atomic-scale mechanisms. Here we introduce a generalized dipole correction for charged repeated-slab models that controls the electric field on both sides of the slab, thereby enabling direct theoretical treatment of field-induced bond-breaking events. As a prototype application, we consider field evaporation from a kinked W surface. We reveal two qualitatively different desorption mechanisms that can be selected by the magnitude of the applied field.
