Subsystem complexity in warped AdS

We compute the ultraviolet divergences of holographic subregion complexity for the left and right factors of the thermofield double state in warped AdS$_3$ black holes, both for the action and the volume conjectures. Besides the linear divergences, which are also present in the BTZ black hole, additional logarithmic divergences appear. For the action conjecture, these log divergences are not affected by the arbitrarity in the length scale associated with the counterterm needed to ensure reparameterization invariance. We find that the subregion action complexity obeys the superadditivity property for the thermofield double in warped AdS$_3$, independently from the action counterterm coefficient. We study the temperature dependence of subregion complexity at constant angular momentum and we find that it is correlated with the sign of the specific heat.

Electrovacuum solutions in non-local gravity

We consider the coupling of the electromagnetic field to a non-local gravity theory comprising of the Einstein-Hilbert action in addition to a non-local $R\, {\Box}^{-2} R$ term associated with a mass scale $m$. We demonstrate that in the case of the minimally coupled electromagnetic field, real corrections about the Reissner-Nordström background only exist between the inner Cauchy horizon and the event horizon of the black hole. This motivates us to consider the modified coupling of electromagnetism to this theory via the Kaluza ansatz. The Kaluza reduction introduces non-local terms involving the electromagnetic field to the pure gravitational non-local theory. An iterative approach is provided to perturbatively solve the equations of motion to arbitrary order in $m^2$ about any known solution of General Relativity. We derive the first-order corrections and demonstrate that the higher order corrections are real and perturbative about the external background of a Reissner-Nordström black hole. We also discuss how the Kaluza reduced action, through the inclusion of non-local electromagnetic fields, could also be relevant in quantum effects on curved backgrounds with horizons.

Non-relativistic fluids on scale covariant Newton-Cartan backgrounds

The non-relativistic covariant framework for fields is extended to investigate fields and fluids on scale covariant curved backgrounds. The scale covariant Newton-Cartan background is constructed using the localization of spacetime symmetries of non-relativistic fields in flat space. Following this, we provide a Weyl covariant formalism which can be used to study scale invariant fluids. By considering ideal fluids as an example, we describe its thermodynamic and hydrodynamic properties and explicitly demonstrate that it satisfies the local second law of thermodynamics. As a further application, we consider the low energy description of Hall fluids. Specifically, we find that the gauge fields for scale transformations lead to corrections of the Wen-Zee and Berry phase terms contained in the effective action.

Cosmological implications of shift symmetric Galileon field

A ghost-free metric formulation of the recently proposed covariant Galileon model \cite{RPgal} which retains the internal shift symmetry has been constructed. This presents a new result because the covariant Galileon models introduced so far in the literature lacks the full Galileon symmetry. We demonstrate that the same general procedure is applicable to all the Galileon interaction terms and the resulting ghost-free Galileon action respecting internal shift symmetry cannot predict the late time acceleration of the universe. However, weakly breaking the shift symmetry in the covariant Galileon Lagrangian, allows us to include an appropriate potential term which can explain late time acceleration, in accordance with recent findings in the literature.

Gravitational anomalies on the Newton-Cartan background

We derive the trace and diffeomorphism anomalies of the Schrödinger field minimally coupled to the Newton-Cartan background using Fujikawa's path integral approach. This approach in particular enables us to calculate the one-loop contributions due to all the fields of the Newton-Cartan structure. We determine the coefficients and demonstrate that gravitational anomalies for this theory always arise in odd dimensions. Due to the gauge field contribution of the background we find that in $2+1$ dimensions the trace anomaly contains terms which have a form similar to that of the $1+1$ and $3+1$ dimensional relativistic trace anomalies. This result reveals that the Newton-Cartan background which satisfies the Frobenius condition possesses a Type A trace anomaly in contrast with the result of Lishitz spacetimes. As an application we demonstrate that the coefficient of the term similar to the $1+1$ dimensional relativistic trace anomaly satisfies a c-theorem condition.

General algorithm for non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariance

An algorithmic approach towards the formulation of non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariance has been developed which involves both matter and gauge fields. A step by step procedure has been provided which can accommodate all types of (abelian) gauge interaction. The algorithm is applied to the problem of a two dimensional electron moving under an external field and also under the Chern-Simons dynamics.

Localisation of the Galilean symmetry and dynamical realisation of Newton-Cartan geometry

Newtonian gravity was formulated as a geometrodynamic theory as far back in 1930s by Elie Cartan in what is named aptly as Newton Cartan space time. Though there are several approaches of realizing the algebraic structure of the Newton Cartan geometry from a contraction of the relativistic results, a dynamical (field theoretic) realization of it is lacking. In this paper we present such a realization from the localisation of the Galilean Symmetry of nonrelativistic matter field theories.

A new formulation of non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariance

We provide a new formulation of nonrelativistic diffeomorphism invariance. It is generated by localising the usual global Galilean Symmetry. The correspondence with the type of diffeomorphism invariant models currently in vogue in the theory of fractional quantum Hall effect has been discussed. Our construction is shown to open up a general approach of model building in theoretical condensed matter physics. Also, this formulation has the capacity of obtaining Newton - Cartan geometry from the gauge procedure.
